Of course all animals deserve a good home, however, the problem of homeless pets is perpetuated when folks buy animals at a store. Every one that is sold, is replaced in inventory just like if you bought socks at Target. The mills that supply the pet store animals, including PetSmart and Petco are horrible places where animals and lineages are bred and inbred and then discarded when they can no longer supply more stock. All too often animals come from these breeding mills to the stores sick, mis-sexed and thus pregnant, or become sick at the stores. Corporate gives stores incorrect care guidelines, so animals are not getting proper nutrition when they need it the most in their development- they don't get vegetables at the stores unless employees bring them. The retailers do not allow for proper feeding in their budgets. Also, we get WAY too many people who impulse buy, or buy without full knowledge of what they're getting themselves into and then those animals get dumped. I could go on for chapters with the multitude of stories of just the animals that have come to our rescue. We need to ban the sale of animals in all retail settings.

I sincerely appreciate that Angel. It’s easy to lose hope when it seems like nobody cares.

No hate at all! I appreciate your concern! I run a Guinea pig rescue and have significant experience with pregnancy and birth, including high risk pregnancy for Guinea pigs. Part of being experienced, however, is knowing when they need to go to the vet. Our animals have the best vet care available if I have even the tiniest concern about any issue. This girl was fine, and there was no worry that she would have trouble. Also, she had only just arrived here from the shelter when she and her sister both went into labour. They were only supposed to be here for an hour before the rescue who was ultimately taking them arrived. We were only transport from the shelter because the other rescue was far away, so we were able to save them an hour of time and about 30 miles of travel.

I hope it goes easy for her! I recommend vitamin C supplement daily for her. Not drops on the water. Oxbow makes a vitamin C cookie, but Child’s Life oral liquid is the best. She’ll benefit from it now and through a month after the babies are weaned. You need to separate boys out at 3 weeks old- both boys and girls can be fertile at that young age. A vet or rescue can help you gender the babies.

@@therescuegarden38 unfortunately she passed away last night during birth from prolapse :( she had two healthy babies who are being hand reared by me and my neutered boy piggie is looking after them💕my girl was only 15 weeks old herself so i think the birth of two big babies was just too much for her. i miss her terribly :(

I’m sorry for your loss. Yes. Piggies under 5 months are high risk pregnancies. There is a formula for the babies. Don’t use kitten replacements or goat milk. The recipe for the formula is: 1 egg yolk Evaporated milk to equal the amount of the egg yolk Water to equal the amount of that mixture. Mix it very well and serve slightly warmed. Once they get the hang of the syringe, they will usually take it readily because it’s kind nursing to them. They need to eat every 2-3 hours day and night for the first 5-7 days, then reduce to every 3-4 hours for the next 5-7 days. By the start of their 3rd week, they usually only need every 5-7 hours. You can store the formula it in the fridge for 3 days. You have to throw it out on the 4th day and make new. After you feed the formula take a soft cloth and gently wipe their butt to stimulate the excretory process. Feed the formula slowly so as not to aspirate them. They will eat hay and veggies hours after birth, so hay should always be available and veggies twice daily. Keep veggies simple. Lettuce (never iceberg of course), bell pepper; small amounts of carrot, parsley, celery leaf, cilantro are all fine for them. If you don’t have experience hand feeding animals and there is a rescue near you I encourage you to ask the rescue to check them over and help if you need it. Thank you for asking, Daisy, and for asking so kindly. This was only a holding pen. I picked up 3 girls from a shelter for another rescue, and they were only supposed to be here for an hour until their ride arrived to take them to their final destination. Within that hour, both pregnant girls had their babies. It was a surprise for all of us!

Thank you, skynerd. If your guinea pig is pregnant, please separate her from the boy. I also recommend a vet visit very soon. The babies need to nurse until they're 3 weeks, and then will need to be separated from mama and girls at 3 weeks, as guinea pigs can be fertile that young. Guinea pigs can become pregnant as soon as 15 hours after they have birthed a litter (which is very dangerous for them!), so it is important that you keep boys and girls separate. Even a moment together can result in pregnancy. It only takes a few seconds for it to happen.

Absolutely! We need to stop the sale of animals in all venues. Pets are living beings, not retail stock. If people knew what those breeder suppliers were like, they'd be shocked.

He’ll get to go outside once he settles into being in a regular home. A little little bit at a time. We don’t want to overwhelm him. Being outside going from the car to the house was scary enough even inside a carrier.

Eyes and ears are all fine. She’s strictly neurological. A few mis-wired circuits in her brain. They did a full range of testing on her at our vet. She is heathy, thank goodness.
