Important note: this is a condensed playthrough of The Spirit of the Samurai. It includes all the boss fights and important story elements/cutscenes, but I've trimmed down some of the larger action/platforming/combat areas. The game takes about 4-6 hours to play through normally. Also, this was a press pre-release build. The 1.0 release has various little fixes and has been rebalanced to make the bosses even harder. It's a very cool game. Hope you enjoy! :) Spoilers for about the wellbeing of the cat (if you're worried about him) The cat has the most incredibly horrific death scenes, but he does make it to the end! :)
The fact that the kitten (THE DAMN KITTEN!) was accompanying Takeshi through his journey and was able to fight back and assist the samurai against the dead like some big dog is insane! Totally accurate strength of the kittens😂😂😂
I loved this game. Also, thank you ABG for not rushing through and for allowing the dialogue to play. It’s a rare quality with gamers these days and I really appreciate that. 😊
Calling the tower where the final boss resides as "HR Giger's house" made me chuckle, this game really has a wonderful art direction! Looking forward to your next vid ABG!
at first I was confused at the stop motion part bc everything looked so digital but then I got the effect in the movement and aesthetics, I actually couldn’t tell if it was digital or stop motion sometimes, it looks really cool
OMG and much like Ghost of Tsushima, the English-Japanese spelling is EXCELLENT! They spelled "U" as "Yur", not "You" or just plain "Yu". Much respect to the game and its story telling!
Fun fact: in the legend the one who killed Shuten dōji was Minamoto no Yorimitsu or known Minamoto no Raikou, with the aid of the mystical poison they assaulted his palace while they are in a bout drinking and managed to cut his head off, it is said that after Yorimitsu cut off his head the Oni continued to bite him but Yorimitsu was safe because he's thick of it by stacking helmets on his head. The head was unholy so they buried it in the outskirts of the city at a mountain pass called Oinosaka while the cup and the bottle of mystical poison was said kept at Nariai- ji Temple at kyoto.
Brother check the english pls I dont really understand what you mean here, was he safe from the bite because the oni had his helmet on or what ? Also what does the drinking bout had to do with anithing, did they trick him into drinking the poison ?
i love the art style but this game does that thing a lot of indie games do where the engine/game world is running at such a buttery smooth framerate that it betrays the art style a bit. like when he moves or walks around the animation itself is great but then you see his actual sprite moving through the gameplay space so smoothly and it kind of ruins the effect. the environments and all the particles/parallax effects are at 60fps too. i wish they had actually capped the framerate or something so that it matched the stop-motion aesthetic better.
That cutscene at the beginning right after Takeshi gets tackled by the Tengu, you can see him grab his sword and his pinky isn’t completely there. Guy is clearly ex-yakuza.
After the game called The Stray, last year, i found this game which includes a cat inside :) This was the main motivation for me... Again, Japanese game is successful at overall... This game is more difficult than The Stray and the concept is a little different naturally... However, still a great choice, a great game... I strongly suggest...
STOP MOTION IN GAME?!?!? IM LOOKING FORWARD LMAO BRO GETS DAMAGED BY HIS ASS GETTING POKED😢😭💔 42:34 The boy was the 3rd reincarnation of the Samurai. You will know because it will always be the same buddy, the cat
Since you said that this is a condensed playthrough and I still haven't got the time to watch it, could you clarify regarding the game more? I would like to know if the game is like a straight-up side scrolling action with level up elements, or is it more like a metroidvania game? I would love to play it later if it's ever released on other platforms.
Hi! Thanks for the suggestion I'll look into it. I've got a lot of games to cover at the moment though (lots of really cool ones seem to be releasing this week). :)
The sound design in the beginning wasn't cutting it for me. They didnt sound like they were meeting outside, the voices sounded like they were in a studio. Immersion break in the first second is rough.
Pfft!😂 oh man, dopey kid talking to a cat in the forest, talking about meeting some guy - suddenly, GOD SHOWS UP OUT OF NOWHERE!!! [Edit] Okay... is this kitsune? I mean the thing is big, white, addorned with red marks... isn't that tsukiome the moon god? Like, seriously, that wolf this is the mood god.

Chisai definitely used up most of his nine lives.

I love the stop-motion style!
I'm reminded of Kubo and The Two Strings, but also... MAD GOD?
Why is stop motion a hundred times more creepy than standard visual horror? 😮
Choppy movements
at first I was confused at the stop motion part bc everything looked so digital but then I got the effect in the movement and aesthetics, I actually couldn’t tell if it was digital or stop motion sometimes, it looks really cool
Shuten Douji: ''Your path ends here, samurai"
Takeshi: ''Says the coward who hides in his palace while his army dies in the mud.''
OUCH!
THIS is how you make a samurai game, also, meow :3
OMG and much like Ghost of Tsushima, the English-Japanese spelling is EXCELLENT! They spelled "U" as "Yur", not "You" or just plain "Yu". Much respect to the game and its story telling!
What do you mean?
best pre-rendered sprites ive ever seen
In the DLC for Ghost of Tsu they had more supernatural stuff. I wish the main game had more of that and it looks like someone delivered.
Just play onimusha
@@stinkboy8147 both. Both is good.
Tsushima.

Nioh 1 and 2 did a good job of making the Yokai look formidable and scary; glad to see this game is doing the same =)
Samurai Kat wins my heart, automatically!
Really love the visual style and animations they went with. It looks like stop-motion.
The cruel ways in which the cat dies traumatize me... As if you don't want to lose.
Pumped for this!
I remember when you posted a short about this game. This game loooks incredible
Yup, he also made a video showcasing a demo of this game :)
Yeah, I've been excited to sheck this one out for ages. Glad it's finally released. Can't beat a bit of stop-motion Yokai slaying! :)
They didn't shy away from the death scenes, even for the kitten.
!he poor little kieen gets the most brutal ones! :)

man, i love the voice acting...

And to think some dinguses says gaming is dead or whatever when you have art pieces like this.
Gaming is still dead I haven't even touch cod in years
The most badass history game 👍👍👊
This is so cool!

The pickup/investigate body sound reminded me of like, a person making a balloon animal
This game is so beautiful
Is the VA of the Kitsune at the beginning the same one for Shogun 2's opening intro?
Very cool and unique... Only anoying part for me is the Cat. Thanks for the Vod Upload ABG
really nice ideas
Chisai was going through it😂😅😢
Good thing Sojobo didnt crank that
Hee! A tabby wearing tabis. ^.^
STOP MOTION IN GAME?!?!? IM LOOKING FORWARD

Oh boy the bots... Anyway. I was just wondering when ABG would upload a new video :D
182nd like!👍
Awesome video!🤘
Keep up the awesome work!🤘😎🤘
🤘
Yay a cat
👍🏻✌🏻

Hi! It's a straight-up side-scrolling action game, not a metroivania.
@AlphaBetaGamer Got it, thanks!
So there's a clear sequel hook...
Yeah! The setting for the sequel would make it very different from the original too!
@@AlphaBetaGamer Agreed. Hopefully one day. It's far, far too early for now.
I hate it every single time the cat dies.. nevertheless the game seems really good
Save the kitten 😢
Reminds me of sub zero mythology. Love that game but never beat the 2nd boss.
Hey ABG, can you do "Pretend its not there" it looks like a horror game you would enjoy.
Hi! Thanks for the suggestion I'll look into it. I've got a lot of games to cover at the moment though (lots of really cool ones seem to be releasing this week). :)
@AlphaBetaGamer thanks for the reply!! And great video as always.

LOL I'm glad it's not just me. Had to turn the sound off.
1:04:33
Not exactly a fan of multiple cutscenes detailing kitten murder.
Pfft!😂 oh man, dopey kid talking to a cat in the forest, talking about meeting some guy - suddenly, GOD SHOWS UP OUT OF NOWHERE!!!
[Edit]
Okay... is this kitsune? I mean the thing is big, white, addorned with red marks... isn't that tsukiome the moon god? Like, seriously, that wolf this is the mood god.
Yeah, it's Kitsune! The whole game is inspired by Japanese folklore. :)
BTW this reminds me of HIDARI
