The pain in Lancelot's cries for Arthur kills me. He truly had lived with such shame and guilt it destroyed him only for him to summon up his greatness one last time. For his king, his friend, his brother Arthur. Some epic stuff only the 80's gave us in Fantasy.
I remember reading somewhere that the Russo brothers, who directed Avengers Infinity War, said that the part where Thor arrives in the battle of Wakanda to help the Avengers was directly inspired by this scene.
When Lancelot says "It is the old wound, my king, it has never healed" - has dual meaning - the actual physical wound and his spiritual wound. Great line.

Always loved this part of the battle; Arthur’s knights getting ripped off their horses and hacked to pieces on the ground, then just Arthur, Kay and Percival fighting back to back - Lancelot rides through the fog in rags and dishes out the good news to Mordred’s lot. Incredible. Kay’s “LANCELOT!!!” gives me man tears..
So true! When his voice cracks on his second scream for Arthur. The pain and desperation in his voice. Such great acting. And his look when he asks about Guinevere. That she has her honor back. Heartbreaking. 😭
A lot of critics panned this movie, said it was hammy and cheap, but the message behind King Arthur and his noble knights is never lost to me. Lancelot the selfless warrior who returns to his King's aid and asks for forgiveness always makes me choke up. We love these stories of noble people who sacrifice and die for something bigger than themselves. In a modern world rife with cheap commentary and a less philosophical perspective it's ironic how a legend like King Arthur can bring some semblance to a cynical mind.
Maybe one guy said that. One guy who preferred movies about 2 French guys smoking cigarettes for 45 minutes. It was a classic in its own time, hailed for its bold depiction of the Arthurian legend.
There aren't enough black albino pygmies in it - it would be so much better if they remade it with a trans arthur and a dwarf guenevere. The movie just doesn't have the greatness of the diversity fest movies Disney's been making for the last 7 or so years.

The final breath of Lancelot after he hears that gwineve is queen again is by all means truly impressive. All guilt, all sin cast aside and the relief is so DAMN POWERFUL that he simply died. Amazing.
He was also feeling guilty that because him she lot her husband and dignity as Queen. He blamed her sin on himself. What 3 friends, they betrayed Arthur but they still loved him above all their weaknesses, which made them even stronger. The Adam and Eve theme where even after their transgressions, rage and punishments, banned.... their Lord still loves them too.

I wasn't a kid anymore, when I watched this first and kept in on and on to the most impressive movie, I will ever watch for it's truth to stand for something, that migth be bigger than you, but becomes you if you join in... and the passage, when the priest cries out, that there is finally a new king for gods sake, it always drives me to tears (just now, when I write this..) and I also love to read so much loving comments for Excalibur, you all are part of a modern roundtable, if you choose that...
I remember as a college student in 1981, I went three nights in a row and saw this movie. It has its cheesy parts, but the way it unfolds is so powerful and timeless. And the direction and acting is for the most part, first rate and unforgettable. That after all, is why we are all here commenting on a movie that is 40 years old. My favorite movie always.
College in the early 80's was magic. My mother went to Fairfield University in Connecticut. She graduated in 85. No social media nonsense you graduated on Merit not because your a certain protected class. There have been many versions of Arthur and Camelot in Cinema, but there is none better than this version by producer/director John Boorman. Something mystical about this one that transcends all the others.
Agreed. I love this movie...rank it highly. What you described, Hugh...is a lot like the feeling I get from the original director of the first Conan movie (John Milius) that had Arnold in it. THAT director...gave us something rough & special...unlike the later Conan movie. Here...Boorman's work hasn't even been remotely close to being replicated. A true masterpiece is what Excalibur is.

There they forgave each other and Arthur declared his love for her and wished they would be together always. Guinevere assented to this. So, Arthur goes onto battle where he defeats his evil son and dies himself. Excalibur is passed to Percival and returned to the Lady of the Lake. It is natural that Guinevere would have returned to the throne as she had never abdicated her position as Queen.

Not even Shaq could catch, and the best in the NBA themselves just gaped, their coaches were at lost, and Scott and the other boys just followed their Arrowhead team mate falling all pieces together into ONE Piece juggernaut, and turned scores like NOTHING I'd ever seen, before or since. Indeed it was to be there and see it, from one second to another coming out (you never knew when it would happen and if it would at all in that evening or that match, but when it did...) and it will be like a rising tsunami Wave, that even if the other team multiplied in two they could NOT stop it, coming again and again, not against Air Jordan, nor against his team swinging right behind him. Even the most loyal man with the purest soul can succumb to temptation. Lancelot regretted his unfaithfulness to Arthur from the first minute. He lived discraced in misery from that moment, and when he saw his chance for redemption, he took it!!
Some movies don't really get to you until you're old enough, this movie I watched countless times as a kid, putting the VHS in every early summer morning before mom & dad woke up and made breakfast. Now as a grown man, to see Lancelot giving his all and last for his old friend so that he may have a chance to beg for forgiveness one last time, dying from a self inflicted wound made and festered by his own self-hate and regret, to hear Arthur say in bewilderment , "Is it true? Lancelot!". It brings me to tears.

Arthur drops Excalibur when he sees Lancelot wounded on the ground. It's subtle, even pragmatic to not hold a sword when comforting somebody. But still, it's a really powerful gesture.
Maybe I read too much into it but Excalibur is the symbol of Arthur's kingship, even more than his crown. Him dropping it to see to Lancelot I always took as symbolic of him not speaking to Lancelot as "Arthur, king of Camelot" but as "Arthur, friend of Lancelot".
In most versions, Lancelot died as a priest. In the Vulgate, Lancelot and his men deliver Logres from Mordred's sons who take it over after Arthur and Mordred die.
I grew up watching this movie! It shaped my young mind to the principles of loyalty, honor and courage in the face of defeat. As I grow older and read the book for myself with other books like Beowulf and Siegfried. But this movie still holds a special place in my heart

Lancelot rolls up on Mordred’s armies flank and starts rocking their world like back in the Day! This is Lancelot. Not the bullshit Richard Gere crap.
After all these decades, Excalibur is still the best Arthur movie, bar none. I have always thought that the whole movie feels real. Not like a movie made to entertain, but watching it, in person, to feel as though you are witnessing exactly what could have possibly happened from legend.
There have been more historically accurate versions but this is the best still. Robert Addle was great in this as Modred and the Robin Hood series on Showtime as Sir Guy.
Lancelot betrayed Truth itself, so that he might save his true love, Guinevere. The noblest man had the most understandable, and forgivable, weakness. But such a sacrifice caused a wound that could not be healed... This film offers timeless wisdom, on true heroism, honor, duty, and nobility. Highly recommended to all.
Arthur loved his wife and she did him and Lancelot. He never had an affairs with her, but she made the mistake. But Arthur forgave them in the end. And Lancelot he betrayed his friend, his king, his brother. It’s easy to forgive others but to forgive ones self is another. If I was Lancelot I would come clean saying I loved the queen and in betraying her husband’s trust, and feelings and God I feel I’m unworthy of my knight title.
Wow, if only I was articulate enough to put into words what Lancelot represents and what he is a symbol of, and the complexity of this legendary mythical character. This heroic legendary man, for all his greatness great morals and principles and valour, as Arthur put it, the best of us all, but ultimately his character was still flawed, he was only human like the rest of us, there is a lesson in there for all of us. He betrayed his best friend and himself which destroyed him and his soul. But still his apprentice Percival will always be my favourite character in the film. Forever the unassuming unsung hero. He didn't have the glamour of Lancelot but was every bit as brave and honourable.
Percival is key to closing the circle. He is the one element Merlin never predicted and Morgana dismissed with such contempt after failing to seduce him who makes possible the redemption of the land, the ending of one cycle and the beginning of the next.
Arthurian legend is more far spread than just the British isles, half my family comes from Brittany a region in France, when it comes to Lancelot, there is a castle south of the town of Brest called La Joyeuse garde (the happy/joyfull watch translated in english), according to legend this castle was called La Douloureuse Garde (the painful guard or ordeal) before it was besieged and freed by Lancelot of the lake. A trip to the forrest of the Huelgoat is recomended to as there is a spring said to have been enchanted by Merlin himself :)
In the Lancelot-Grail aka Vulgate, Joyeuse Gard wasn't in France. It was in Britain. Lancelot was exiled after he delivered Guinevere to Arthur, and he returned to France. He had kept Guinevere under protection at Joyeuse Gard.
Although you see Lancelot fight earlier in the film (first duelling Arthur then Gawain) you got a sense he was holding back there. Despite his age and self-inflicted injury he has goes full red-mist battle mode and saves the day. Just the best film version of the Arthur legend by far. Someone needs to make a series of Bernard Cornwells Arthur trilogy.

You have: The funeral march from Goterdamerung (that opens and closes the movie), the Prélude from Parsifal (at the end of this video) and some passages from Tristan and Isolde. This was one of the most defining movies of my childhood. It cemented my love for sword and sorcery movies along with the legend of excalibur. Great cast great scenery great battles and music. Just a great all around legendary movie.
What really sold me on this movie is you can tell they really are fighting in armour from the way they move and sway with each step and swing of the sword. Practical effects in film are always worth it.

@Radio Kaos Incorrect. He is wearing plate armor; a cuirass that's rusted, gauntlets (hands) and cuisses, poleyns and greaves on his legs--maybe more, it's hard to tell because of the fog. I think the studded leather on his arms was a tactical decision so he could move his arms unimpeded--for quicker slashing and hacking...
I saw this movie when I was about 10/11 years old for the first time. Loved it from that moment on! The music is so powerful & what critics might say the story is also very good!
Everyone has commented well - so just adding this - best example of how sluggish and difficult it would have been to fight in heavy plate armour. Saw this movie as a kid - loved it, still have very fond memories of it, great acting, great story.

So many powerful scenes in this movie that could bring a man to tears. Lancelot was the best of us, but ultimately he was not infallible. No one is perfect, he was flawed like the rest of us as he was human like the rest of us, but he could not live with the guilt of betraying his best friend and king. For Arthur to be so forgiving and for showing such fortitude is what make him the greatest king of all and closest to Christ. This is a work of art and a great lesson in life.
I was scrolling through the comments because I wanted to see what people thought because personally I hate lancelot and gwen. They let lust destroy so much. I'm even kinda mad about lancelot asking about gwen being queen again because it seems more lake him trying to protect his lover since he's going to die and what better life for her to have then to be queen again to a good man? @@jordanpax9735 Precisely, i think the symbolism of Arthur drinking from the grail "filled his soul" as he put it, or perhaps put another way it gave him Christ like qualities of forgiveness. The lesson in the bible is that Jesus took our sins when he sacrificed himself on the cross. Arthur took the sin from Lancelot and let him die in peace, it was his fault for using Merlin to save Lancelot's life when he was supposed to die. But by the same token, Lancelot also made the ultimate sacrifice, and gave his life in battle to save Arthur to redeem himself. Only Christ could show that level of forgiveness and Christs spirit was in Arthur having drank from the Grail. I also think he asked about Gwen not for the reasons you said but because i think he blames himself for their actions and hopes that she and Arthur are united again. Only then he can rest in peace, which is why he dies when Arthur tells him she is Queen again.

Sometimes you cant help who you fall in love with or having feelings for someone. Life is one big struggle filled with pain and suffering, so i prefer this version as it is truer to real life. It is only through adversity do we learn important life lessons and can appreciate the good times.

The reason Percival isn't "what's best in men" is because he's perfect. He found the grail because he was the perfect example of a knight. Lancelot is "what's best in men" because he rose above his imperfections. To be imperfect is to be human to rise above your imperfections is to be "the best of men".

Both history and fiction are filled with stories of two friends/brothers hating each other for all time killing each other over the girl. That's what this would should have been. However once Camelot and Arthur were in real danger Lancelot came back not as an enemy but to save the day.
After decades of having seen it for the first time, this is to me the most memorable scene of this magical movie that I saw as barely a teenager, pitching a tent with a blanket over my grandparent's living room tv so I wouldn't be caught, listening to the audio so low, yet the words sounded so loud and clear in my heart, they've stuck to me since. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you for this clip.

“You are its greatest knight.” With this line Arthur forgives Lancelot and realizes it was a mistake to lose him from the round table. Lancelot is what kept the knights together and strong.

I took my wife on our very 1st date to see this movie when Excalibur premiered, we got married a few years later and have been married every since. The honor shown in this movie is fleeting in todays times. A growing part of Society can't even define what a man is anymore especially with T at an all time low...people must have examples of truth, honor etc or it will be doomed
I remember seeing this when I was a kid. Loved the acting, the overall message of the film, a very memorable film on a classic legend. On a side note, at 0:38, you can see that Nigel Terry really got clobbered by the other actors sword...keep rolling film!!
I care not one bit about all the armor and weapon time period inaccuracies. Yes I know they are extreme, it doesn't matter, it's a stylistic, almost surreal imagining of King Arthur.
Time period inaccuracies? What are you talking about? King Arthur, Merlin or Lancelot du Lac never existed, it's a bloody LEGEND. This is a fucking FANTASY movie, no accuracy to any period is needed.
I'd even say that their weapons aren't quite normal but somehow ethereal, Arthur's weapon certainly is maxx'd out for killing, Lancelot's is perhaps the most realistic for brutal blows of death and not being magical.
One of my favorite old movies...incredible filmography. They simply don't go through the effort now days to bring this kind of movie to life. It's all "green screen" and no...that's not necessarily better...obviously. Something is just...lost...when it's all computer generated. (PJ's Hobbit #2 & #3 proves this...with Hobbit #1 being the best of the 3...and it had the least amount of special effects, etc,.) This movie was a pretty good rendition of the Legendary Arthur and will forever be one of my favorites.

He wears armor. It's the padding worn underneath plate armor. Lancelot feels his betrayal to his friend and king, prohibits him from wearing the king's armor. He rides without it, knowing he will die, in his quest for redemption (Percival yelled to him after Lancelot attacked him in the river "come back Lancelot! Arthur needs you" and you see it in his (Lancelot's) face

True observation in film. Lancelot screaming for his King is truly an epic moment in cinema. This is by far the most outstanding in portrayals of not only the Arthurian Legend, but of the Mysteries of Avalon as well. The acting, the casting, the set designs and locations, all top of the tops in thespian mastery. I first saw this while myself and others, were in afternoon detention in high school(1982). I’ve been faithful in viewing ever since.

I wasn't a kid anymore, when I watched this first and kept in on and on to the most impressive movie, I will ever watch for it's truth to stand for something, that migth be bigger than you, but becomes you if you join in... and the passage, when the priest cries out, that there is finally a new king for gods sake, it always drives me to tears (just now, when I write this..) and I also love to read so much loving comments for Excalibur, you all are part of a modern roundtable, if you choose that...

I remember as a college student in 1981, I went three nights in a row and saw this movie. It has its cheesy parts, but the way it unfolds is so powerful and timeless. And the direction and acting is for the most part, first rate and unforgettable. That after all, is why we are all here commenting on a movie that is 40 years old. My favorite movie always.
College in the early 80's was magic. My mother went to Fairfield University in Connecticut. She graduated in 85. No social media nonsense you graduated on Merit not because your a certain protected class. Also the 80's especially the early 80's had a real innocence and the middle class was by far the biggest class. Now the U.S. is becoming India... Extremely Rich .0001 or Extremely poor 99.0009😮

There have been many versions of Arthur and Camelot in Cinema, but there is none better than this version by producer/director John Boorman. Something mystical about this one that transcends all the others.

THAT director...gave us something rough & special...unlike the later Conan movie.

Why did Arthur lied though? Guinevere wasn't queen. I remember what Merlin said, "When a man lies he murders part of the world"
@@neilbertmillar9960 Arthur didn't lie. He went to see Guinevere at the monastery where she was living in repentance of her sins. There they forgave each other and Arthur declared his love for her and wished they would be together always. Guinevere assented to this. So, Arthur goes onto battle where he defeats his evil son and dies himself. Excalibur is passed to Percival and returned to the Lady of the Lake. It is natural that Guinevere would have returned to the throne as she had never abdicated her position as Queen.
The mere sight of Lancelot fighting with them incites these knights to greater heroism.
That is what proves greatness. In some sports there are plyers who are individually brilliant but then there are those who are individually brialliant but also inspire and bring out the best from the rest of the team. Lancelot had it all but even he was not perfect.
Agreed, you see it sometimes in sports when a player is individually brilliant but selfish and can sometimes hold back the team. Lancelot is like one of those players who is individually brilliant but a brilliant team player who inspires and motivates those around him, he bring the best out of his team and breed confidence and belief into everyone around him. Sadly even he was not perfect.
@@bieituns That reminds me of those NBA games long time ago, when the Bulls were facing really tough teams of brilliant players, better coordinating than themselves regardless all they tried, and out of nowhere, Michael Jordan got inspired by the Above and he just flew through it all. Not even Shaq could catch, and the best in the NBA themselves just gaped, their coaches were at lost, and Scott and the other boys just followed their Arrowhead team mate falling all pieces together into ONE Piece juggernaut, and turned scores like NOTHING I'd ever seen, before or since. Indeed it was to be there and see it, from one second to another coming out (you never knew when it would happen and if it would at all in that evening or that match, but when it did...) and it will be like a rising tsunami Wave, that even if the other team multiplied in two they could NOT stop it, coming again and again, not against Air Jordan, nor against his team swinging right behind him. They wasn't getting a second wind, they became the Wind in the whole Palace Arena.
They were on the verge of being overwhelmed too, until his arrival.

the nod Arthur gave while sayin "you are that, and much more". The body movement and the tone of his voice SHOW how he's being sincere to Lancelot.
Even the most loyal man with the purest soul can succumb to temptation. Lancelot regretted his unfaithfulness to Arthur from the first minute. He lived discraced in misery from that moment, and when he saw his chance for redemption, he took it!!
Some movies don't really get to you until you're old enough, this movie I watched countless times as a kid, putting the VHS in every early summer morning before mom & dad woke up and made breakfast. Now as a grown man, to see Lancelot giving his all and last for his old friend so that he may have a chance to beg for forgiveness one last time, dying from a self inflicted wound made and festered by his own self-hate and regret, to hear Arthur say in bewilderment , "Is it true? Lancelot!". It brings me to tears.

Arthur drops Excalibur when he sees Lancelot wounded on the ground. It's subtle, even pragmatic to not hold a sword when comforting somebody. But still, it's a really powerful gesture.

Maybe I read too much into it but Excalibur is the symbol of Arthur's kingship, even more than his crown. Him dropping it to see to Lancelot I always took as symbolic of him not speaking to Lancelot as "Arthur, king of Camelot" but as "Arthur, friend of Lancelot".
Arthur......FORGIVE. That gets me every time. And Lancelot, the greatest warrior since Achilles. Epic.

In most versions, Lancelot died as a priest.
In the Vulgate, Lancelot and his men deliver Logres from Mordred's sons who take it over after Arthur and Mordred die.
It's because the Vulgate had a strong religious emphasis.

I grew up watching this movie! It shaped my young mind to the principles of loyalty, honor and courage in the face of defeat. As I grow older and read the book for myself with other books like Beowulf and Siegfried. But this movie still holds a special place in my heart

After all these decades, Excalibur is still the best Arthur movie, bar none. I have always thought that the whole movie feels real. Not like a movie made to entertain, but watching it, in person, to feel as though you are witnessing exactly what could have possibly happened from legend.

There have been more historically accurate versions but this is the best still. Robert Addle was great in this as Modred and the Robin Hood series on Showtime as Sir Guy.

Lancelot betrayed Truth itself, so that he might save his true love, Guinevere. The noblest man had the most understandable, and forgivable, weakness. But such a sacrifice caused a wound that could not be healed...
This film offers timeless wisdom, on true heroism, honor, duty, and nobility. Highly recommended to all.
Arthur loved his wife and she did him and Lancelot. He never had an affairs with her, but she made the mistake.
But Arthur forgave them in the end. And Lancelot he betrayed his friend, his king, his brother. It’s easy to forgive others but to forgive ones self is another.
If I was Lancelot I would come clean saying I loved the queen and in betraying her husband’s trust, and feelings and God I feel I’m unworthy of my knight title.
This movie is in my top 5 all time.
It seems there will never be a better telling of this great and epic tale in film.

Wow, if only I was articulate enough to put into words what Lancelot represents and what he is a symbol of, and the complexity of this legendary mythical character. This heroic legendary man, for all his greatness great morals and principles and valour, as Arthur put it, the best of us all, but ultimately his character was still flawed, he was only human like the rest of us, there is a lesson in there for all of us. He betrayed his best friend and himself which destroyed him and his soul. But still his apprentice Percival will always be my favourite character in the film. Forever the unassuming unsung hero. He didn't have the glamour of Lancelot but was every bit as brave and honourable.
Percival is key to closing the circle. He is the one element Merlin never predicted and Morgana dismissed with such contempt after failing to seduce him who makes possible the redemption of the land, the ending of one cycle and the beginning of the next.
Arthurian legend is more far spread than just the British isles, half my family comes from Brittany a region in France, when it comes to Lancelot, there is a castle south of the town of Brest called La Joyeuse garde (the happy/joyfull watch translated in english), according to legend this castle was called La Douloureuse Garde (the painful guard or ordeal) before it was besieged and freed by Lancelot of the lake. A trip to the forrest of the Huelgoat is recomended to as there is a spring said to have been enchanted by Merlin himself :)
In the Lancelot-Grail aka Vulgate, Joyeuse Gard wasn't in France. It was in Britain. Lancelot was exiled after he delivered Guinevere to Arthur, and he returned to France. He had kept Guinevere under protection at Joyeuse Gard.
...and the loyalty to the man he loved vs his desire for Gueneviere
I don't know, if you actually read the legend the only thing Lancelot is objectively good at is murdering the fuck out of people.
Although you see Lancelot fight earlier in the film (first duelling Arthur then Gawain) you got a sense he was holding back there.
Despite his age and self-inflicted injury he has goes full red-mist battle mode and saves the day.
Just the best film version of the Arthur legend by far.
Someone needs to make a series of Bernard Cornwells Arthur trilogy.

Actually, the music was written by Carl Orff, circa 1935-36. Search "O Fortuna".
@@DotBone89 O Fortuna is used a couple of times, but most of the music is from Wagner. You have: The funeral march from Goterdamerung (that opens and closes the movie), the Prélude from Parsifal (at the end of this video) and some passages from Tristan and Isolde.

What really sold me on this movie is you can tell they really are fighting in armour from the way they move and sway with each step and swing of the sword. Practical effects in film are always worth it.

@Radio Kaos Incorrect. He is wearing plate armor; a cuirass that's rusted, gauntlets (hands) and cuisses, poleyns and greaves on his legs--maybe more, it's hard to tell because of the fog. I think the studded leather on his arms was a tactical decision so he could move his arms unimpeded--for quicker slashing and hacking...
You probably already know this, but Lancelot's return in this film was the inspiration for the scene where Thor arrives in Wakanda.
I saw this movie when I was about 10/11 years old for the first time. Loved it from that moment on! The music is so powerful & what critics might say the story is also very good!
Everyone has commented well - so just adding this - best example of how sluggish and difficult it would have been to fight in heavy plate armour. Saw this movie as a kid - loved it, still have very fond memories of it, great acting, great story.

So many powerful scenes in this movie that could bring a man to tears. Lancelot was the best of us, but ultimately he was not infallible. No one is perfect, he was flawed like the rest of us as he was human like the rest of us, but he could not live with the guilt of betraying his best friend and king. For Arthur to be so forgiving and for showing such fortitude is what make him the greatest king of all and closest to Christ. This is a work of art and a great lesson in life.
I was scrolling through the comments because I wanted to see what people thought because personally I hate lancelot and gwen. They let lust destroy so much. I'm even kinda mad about lancelot asking about gwen being queen again because it seems more lake him trying to protect his lover since he's going to die and what better life for her to have then to be queen again to a good man?
I found your comment about Arthur and christ and now I'm conflicted God would say to forgive and if I was Arthur I don't know if I could forgive them both and take gwen back as my wife.
@@jordanpax9735 Precisely, i think the symbolism of Arthur drinking from the grail "filled his soul" as he put it, or perhaps put another way it gave him Christ like qualities of forgiveness. The lesson in the bible is that Jesus took our sins when he sacrificed himself on the cross. Arthur took the sin from Lancelot and let him die in peace, it was his fault for using Merlin to save Lancelot's life when he was supposed to die. But by the same token, Lancelot also made the ultimate sacrifice, and gave his life in battle to save Arthur to redeem himself.
Only Christ could show that level of forgiveness and Christs spirit was in Arthur having drank from the Grail. I also think he asked about Gwen not for the reasons you said but because i think he blames himself for their actions and hopes that she and Arthur are united again. Only then he can rest in peace, which is why he dies when Arthur tells him she is Queen again.

Sometimes you cant help who you fall in love with or having feelings for someone. Life is one big struggle filled with pain and suffering, so i prefer this version as it is truer to real life. It is only through adversity do we learn important life lessons and can appreciate the good times.

The reason Percival isn't "what's best in men" is because he's perfect. He found the grail because he was the perfect example of a knight. Lancelot is "what's best in men" because he rose above his imperfections. To be imperfect is to be human to rise above your imperfections is to be "the best of men".
@@aleken2463 oh, hogwash, lol. percival admitted to being afraid and overcame that to get the grail. he solved the riddle through years of torturous quest, failing the first time. he didn't want to throw excalibur away out of fear of still needing it. he defended the queen to become a knight for his own gain, not because he necessarily believed she was innocent, but was opportunistic when the chance arose.
percival was far from perfect, but he was loyal and resisted temptation when it mattered. what exactly did lancelot overcome? he betrayed the king knowing it would send the land into turmoil, deserting him, then spent half his life *blaming* the king and leading a grass roots effort decrying him.
fuck lancelot. if there's a hero in this movie, it's percival all the way, particularly if you considering him from a character standpoint he had much more of a hero's journey than lancelot.

Both history and fiction are filled with stories of two friends/brothers hating each other for all time killing each other over the girl. That's what this would should have been. However once Camelot and Arthur were in real danger Lancelot came back not as an enemy but to save the day.

After decades of having seen it for the first time, this is to me the most memorable scene of this magical movie that I saw as barely a teenager, pitching a tent with a blanket over my grandparent's living room tv so I wouldn't be caught, listening to the audio so low, yet the words sounded so loud and clear in my heart, they've stuck to me since. I took my wife on our very 1st date to see this movie when Excalibur premiered, we got married a few years later and have been married every since. The honor shown in this movie is fleeting in todays times. A growing part of Society can't even define what a man is anymore especially with T at an all time low...people must have examples of truth, honor etc or it will be doomed

Time period inaccuracies? What are you talking about? King Arthur, Merlin or Lancelot du Lac never existed, it's a bloody LEGEND. This is a fucking FANTASY movie, no accuracy to any period is needed.

I'd even say that their weapons aren't quite normal but somehow ethereal, Arthur's weapon certainly is maxx'd out for killing, Lancelot's is perhaps the most realistic for brutal blows of death and not being magical.

(PJ's Hobbit #2 & #3 proves this...with Hobbit #1 being the best of the 3...and it had the least amount of special effects, etc,.)
This movie was a pretty good rendition of the Legendary Arthur and will forever be one of my favorites.

Great acting! I think it gets everybody choked up at this part. Well written screenplay. Acting at its finest! The forgivness and love of a king to his trusted knight and friend. The redemption of the greatest knight of the round table... Lancelot!!!
Love the accidental almost decapitation of Arthur at 0:37. I say that without sarcasm, the battlefield is chaotic, so great they didn't yell 'Cut!'
Dude, Lancelot is such a badass he rolls in without any armor!!
He wears armor. It's the padding worn underneath plate armor.
Lancelot feels his betrayal to his friend and king, prohibits him from wearing the king's armor.
He rides without it, knowing he will die, in his quest for redemption (Percival yelled to him after Lancelot attacked him in the river "come back Lancelot! Arthur needs you" and you see it in his (Lancelot's) face
He was wearing that armor underneath his robes though I think. Also isn't the armor in the final scene the same but just blackened?@@PeonSanders911

Yes. And it’s reflected in the filmmaking. It is earnest and pure hearted. It’s not apologizing for being fantastical or mythological.
It has never been equalled and probably never will be - undoubtedly the greatest movie ever made about the legend of King Arthur and the Round Table.

This is by far the most outstanding in portrayals of not only the Arthurian Legend, but of the Mysteries of Avalon as well.

When Arthur and the knights realized that Lancelot was with them it seemed to give them more energy to fight on even harder. Awesome movie.
