The reason it brings a tear to one's eyes is because it has a Spiritual Truth at its core. True Love is the bond. Life is eternal. My Love is waiting for my star to fall.
One of the greatest movie moments ever. This scene touches anybody who's ever lost a parent or any type of mentor. "If only you were at my side to give me courage" and "More than I ever did I need you now." All of us have pretty muched lived this scene or one day will. This and Roy's death in Bladerunner are IMO two of the most powerful in all of film.
This scene is another instance of the movie's recurrent theme of love breaking through all boundaries. Arthur struggles to find a way to defeat the evil that besets the land - he knocks on the great stones and the reverberation travels down through the Earth - and in his reverie, in the depths of the unconscious - he receives an answer. The magical prison created by Morgana to imprison Merlin cannot withstand Arthur's love for his old mentor.
Such a wonderful and warm scene. I need to construct a Stonehenge in the back garden and pray to Merlin from time to time myself. Wagner's "Parsifal" overture has never been set to such atmosphere in a film. "Where are you Merlin?"
TY , one of my most intense movie moment emotions.. that slam on the stone gives me shivers .. I used to do the same in my life now and then.. where are you merlin.. I need you.. the world needs you..
"Your love brought me back.".....awesome....The knight,,needs his magic..his passion,,,and hence..returns, no beckons,,,for the love....and it tis given...wonderful scene if you know the film!!!!
My favorite scene in my favorite movie of all times... and that's not easy, when compared with other greatness like "Blade Runner", "Thunderheart".....others could add... But, this scene is so special... "a dream to some....and a NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS"... Merlin Rocks!!!
Magnificent and untouchable, legendary cinema. Way beyond what the McMovie machine in hollywood could ever understand. Unless you're Welsh by the way these dudes weren't your forebears. We English were the invaders in this movie. Still ... it remains one of my favourite films. A good one about King Alfred, our only king called 'Great' would be magic for us in these woeful times.
There's something about the tone and feel of it that's compelling, even though it's overblown and convoluted. It reminds me a bit of David Lynch's Dune: in many ways, it's an OTT mess, but it draws you in nonetheless with its energy, production values and commitment.
Yes, it's truth. I am agree with all. And the grand power is that merlin said: "Your love (your faith; in the spanish version) put me back!" is plenty of emotion. Roy's death in BLADE RUNNER makes you think one thing: "Replicants were more human than humans".
Well actually he is, he is magic, not really a living person. So when Morgana imprisoned him, she in affect did kill him. Arthur called him back from the tomb that she placed him in. Now a ghost...or a dream.
Merlin: You brought me back. Your love brought me back. Back to where you are now. In the land of dreams. Arthur: Are you just a dream, Merlin? Merlin: A dream to some... A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS!
Rex Quandam Rex Futurus! Kernow, Cymru Kensa! Vita Dux Bellorum! Myrrdin and the King of the Men of Britain, they have never forgotten their people just as the ties that bind to the land cannot be broken. They have been sleeping for the age past (1500 years) just as was foreseen by the visionary poets of old. And again as the bards stated the time has come to awake...Now for the Return to Mount Baddon!! The invaders will be laid low by a single charge and none laid them low save Arthur alone
@Apophisguard Couldn't agree more. Williamson brought a completely new dimension to the character without the slightest hesitation of what anyone else would think of a seemingly "over the top" portrayal.
@eleeking The riddle answer, "...it is not a stone, the iron or steel, not even the hand that wields the weapons, it is always the thoughts and dreams which are more dangerous than them" N. Mandela quoting Gandhi and why they do not only disarm you but try to jail you. But there is no chains for the thoughts
I love this film. This scene is beautiful. They have not made a good King Arthur film since. First Knight with Richard Gere and Connery was awful and the King Arthur film a few years ago was equally bad. I wish they redid Excalibur
I doubt anyone will ever top Nicol Williamson as Merlin. Period
Best King Arthur and best Merlin in cinematic history.
"A dream to some, a nightmare to others" best line ever!
It's a very spiritual movie unlike movies today.
I never seen another movie that pulled off as many meaingful and moving scenes as this one. Most wouldn't agree but this was Booreman's master piece.
I love this film. I had it on VHS and now DVD. I've watched it 100 times. It's nice to see there are others who share my enthusiasm.
Rest in Peace Mr. Terry, you were King Arthur, always
after several decades of initially seeing this scene, it still grabs me by the chest. Love and friendship on this level transcends mere art.
Two great losses, and heartfelt. Mr Williamson and Mr Terry. Our Merlin and Arthur..R.I.P. "There are other worlds.."
The reason it brings a tear to one's eyes is because it has a Spiritual Truth at its core. True Love is the bond. Life is eternal. My Love is waiting for my star to fall.
The King Arthur I will always remember.
One of the greatest movie moments ever. This scene touches anybody who's ever lost a parent or any type of mentor. I was 10 when I this came out... still gives me chills. Timeless
lovely scene. basically a child talking to a long dead parent.
after ALL of this time, I'm wiping tears fgrom my eyes after watching this INCREDIBLE scene.
It is a beautiful scene. Emotion, loss and regret. I love this film.
This scene is another instance of the movie's recurrent theme of love breaking through all boundaries. The magical prison created by Morgana to imprison Merlin cannot withstand Arthur's love for his old mentor.
I love the echo when he pounds the standing stone with his fist.
I love how Arthur reaches his old mentor in a twilight reverie between consciousness and unconsciousness - "the land of dreams".
Such a wonderful and warm scene. I need to construct a Stonehenge in the back garden and pray to Merlin from time to time myself. Wagner's "Parsifal" overture has never been set to such atmosphere in a film.
"Where are you Merlin?"
one of the BEST lines delivered in a movie, ever
La imagen de Arturo con el atardecer como fondo, con esa musica, es para mi una de las mejores de la historia del cine.
Beautiful imagery, splendrous music, stellar acting and a heart and soul wrenching Arthurian tale unequaled previously or since.
Best "King Arthur" movie of all time!
This scene brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it ... just perfect
I love the way they delivered their lines, specially Nicol Williamson(Merlin).
Its my favorite scene, almost brings a tear to my eyes watching it...
An amazing scene, the music and photography are unbeatable. Takes my breath away every time I see this scene.
Love the way they delivered their lines.
Thank you for posting. One of the most profound scenes in the movie.
Truly great!!! I must have played this scene over and over when I had the VHS
beautiful and fantastic scene, see the lake below where the sword ends up.
Nicol Williamson was epic in this. Very underated movie.
" The Land of Dreams ... Excalibur .. King Arthur " .. The most magical of the legends that man memories!
One of the most amazing sequences in film history, well to me anyway!
It is interesting to see the part of the last meet between Arthur and Geneve. The last words of Arthur in that dialogue became clear here.
We need him again.
The music in the background of this scene and when Percival finds the grail magnificent
Yes, the music is outstanding.
Great background music
A dream to some like arthur, A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS LIKE MORDRED AND MORGANA.
Love the way they delivered their lines, specially Nicol Williamson(Merlin).
There have never been made a better movie about knights, and there propably never will.
I've also used the symbolism of this scene to describe After Death Communications with a spouse or someone close.... in a vivid dream, unlike others.
My favorite szene!!!! Thank you very much.
You just made me cry.
The music is by Trevor Jones and Richard Wagner. The soundtrack is one of the best.
your love keeps me awake you are my arthur im a your dream and im your enemys nightmare
one of the best lines ever....
I love this scene, truly magical.
"You brought me baaaack" "dreeeeaaaaaam"
A great film!
if we all had someone to guide us how things may be different
keep the belief alive- for as long as it lives...
Faith in what one believes a balance of the sprit and of science. Your dreams can give you strength, science can give you a weapon to do battle with.
@Invermitch fine words Sir, totally agree with you. This is one of the most powerful, earthy scenes in this majestic film.
So you can say I WAS THERE .... WITH ARTHUR... for it is the doom of others men forget.....
I brood and pray for a European/Anglo cultural and spiritual re-awakening everyday. Look at what has become of us..its shamefull.
I love this part. Ah Merlin we need you know more than ever. I dream to some A nightmare to others.
There's something about the tone and feel of it that's compelling, even though it's overblown and convoluted. It reminds me a bit of David Lynch's Dune: in many ways, it's an OTT mess, but it draws you in nonetheless with its energy, production values and commitment.
Chills, Everytime, But Good, Thanks
It's one of the last great Hollywood movies.
The old sages/druids:A dream to those loving, living, missing Magic, but a nightmare to the Church men,and even to scientists now.
another awsome scene makes u beleive theres hope makes u beleive u can make a difference
Love is a stronger force than any magical prison.
Love this movie
Yes, it's truth. I am agree with all.

Roy's death in BLADE RUNNER makes you think one thing: "Replicants were more human than humans".
@Invermitch Friend, it isn't 'Wagnerian' music: it IS Wagner. The prelude to Parsifal, and a great recording of it. I wish it was on CD. Best wishes.
Thank you for your words and support
BEST MERLIN EVER.
"A dream... to some... A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS!"
Wonderful stuff, complete with Wagnerian accompaniment (Parsifal)
Nothing original to add here, and maybe that's the whole point; this is among the best scenes of a beloved movie... :o)
I love this movie (it looks absolutely beautiful) and I love this scene.
And to you my friend, thank you.
He lives on in our dreams.
same here, my all time favorite scene, especially the culmination:
"A dream to some... AND A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS"
..."It's a dream I have."
Rex Quandam Rex Futurus!
Kernow, Cymru Kensa!
Vita Dux Bellorum!
Myrrdin and the King of the Men of Britain, they have never forgotten their people just as the ties that bind to the land cannot be broken. Where have you been all these years...
A dream, to some. A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS!
merlin a dream to men like arthur and kay and a nightmare to others like mordred and morgana.
a dream to some.. A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS!!!!!
hahahahhahahahahhahahaha
".....A NIGHTMARE TO OTHERS!"
@Apophisguard Couldn't agree more. Williamson brought a completely new dimension to the character without the slightest hesitation of what anyone else would think of a seemingly "over the top" portrayal.
legendary film .. evergreen! 8'-)

MrFunk,
Wow....yeah, Roy's death was equal awesome!!! I love that scene....
Could anyone tell me where this scene is shot ? Are them stone pillars real or props ?
I love this film. This scene is beautiful.
They have not made a good King Arthur film since.
First Knight with Richard Gere and Connery was awful and the King Arthur film a few years ago was equally bad.
I wish they redid Excalibur
Even with the poor dubbing and lame FX, the movie is more compelling than 99% of what gets made today.
To the person who wrote the comment about how beautiful the landscape look. Sorry it was accidentally deleted. Please repost.
-A dream to some... a nightmare to others...
-Sueño para algunos... pesádilla para otros...
I agree, good call
It's True A Dream to Some is a Nightmare to others
@pendragonU Speak more about this please, I am interested in the occult.
