Agreed, I am almost shocked that some people find Excalibur to be corny. I've seen this movie several dozen times and never tire of it's brilliance of action, storytelling and cast
Low key Kay needs to be recognized for his honesty. For a second he reaches for power and almost immediately you see him realize it was wrong and tell the truth
I still marvel at how well Wagner’s Der Ring does Nieberlungen music gets integrated into this film. It blew my mind as an 18-year old when I first saw it at the New Varsity Theatre in Palo Alto back in 1981.
I love this film. The very first VHS tape I ever bought was this movie. Must've watched it 50 times! It's terrific. I really love the music. Its so perfect in its ability to set the scenes I almost tear up at the end because I want to be transported to that place and time again. It never fails to affect me.
This is the best of all of the movies about King Arthur and the Knights of the round table, and a personal favorite. I have seen it dozens of times. A fine flim, so well done!
Merlin: "Looking at the cake is like looking at the future, until you've tasted it what do you really know? And then, of course, it's too late." _[Arthur takes a bite]_ Merlin: "Too late."
My apologies. I've only just noticed this comment. I made the same connection in the comments, but you were definitely here well before me! Great minds an' all that!
yamamancha Actually set in the Dark Ages or early Christian Britain. A major theme is the rise of Christianity and the fading of the Pagan worldview....pre Alfred the Great...Boorman gave them medieval armor to give it a timeless aspect.
Director John Boorman wanted the forest scenes in the movie to have a magical look to them so he used a large Green light shining at the actors as you will see glints of green on metal throughout the movie. Beautifully done and brilliant decision on his behalf.
But there are at least two scenes that lack the green light: The scene where Arthur submits to Uryens' mercy, bidding Uryens to either knight him, or slay him. Merlin is stunned, saying "What's this? I never saw this!" It is not a magical scene, but a testament to the will, courage, and honor of both men. (Yes, the same Uryens we see here demanding another chance to draw Excalibur. ) And at the very end, when Percival returns Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. It is a moment steeped in mystery and miracle, but it is the passing of magic from the world, and again, there is no green light. It has been pointed out to me that a couple of scenes are lit with blue light, notably when Percival achieves his Quest for the Grail, suggesting that where green signifies the Old Magic, blue indicates a holy Christian influence. And upon rewatching Percival returning Excalibur, I see there is a moment where, as the sword flies to the Lady's hand, it glints blue. Perhaps this suggests Excalibur now serves God, or is in His keeping. It's hard not to believe that Boorman was working under Godly inspiration to get such details right.
I totally agree! He was my favorite character of this wonderful film (and so many of the actors are fabulous). I was saddened to hear of Williamson's recent death. Long live Merlin!
One of the best movies I ever saw. Brilliantly cast, played and directed. And the music... It gets me every time. Me, a republican, would give my allegiance to THIS King Arthur and follow him to the gates of hell.
I remember when this came out when I was just a kid it was the first live action movie on King Arthur that I saw of the other ones that were made this is the number one of them all .
“I was your son before I became your king” he’s crowned himself and already thinking of himself as king and it’s been like 60 seconds since he removed the sword.
Just a little observation. Uryens tries with all of his might to draw the sword and can't. Arthur grabs it with one hand and yanks it out. I always thought that was kind of funny. This is one of my favorite films of ALL time.
I used to think it was funny, that everyone was YELLING all the time. But now I figure, those dudes were wearing metal helmets all the time. Probably hard to hear your buddy talking, when you’re wearing one. Plus, all that clanging of metal and getting bashed in the head, probably made them half deaf. So I get it now.
I remember reading the kids version of Sword in the Stone when I was young. I think there’s a scene when Young Wart (Arthur) pulls Excalibur out of the stone, and the knights and priests kept making him do it over and over again to prove Taft he could do it
It’s the best Arthur movie out there I would say. Proper 80s film. Bit like Highlander etc you could get away with it back then and be a classic. Nowadays people don’t have imagination. You make a film like that now you would have all the history virgins coming out the woodwork that have destroyed Braveheart recently. Movies are made to entertain and I think this has the most entertaining Arthur based script in the movie industry
You've got that right. I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
Agreed, I am almost shocked that some people find Excalibur to be corny. I've seen this movie several dozen times and never tire of it's brilliance of action, storytelling and cast
Those people would be morons.
I just watched it today. It’s a great film
I've always liked patrick Stewart, he rocks in this movie
the musical score alone makes it badass and worth watching. best telling of the legend of Arthur ever.
My#1 pick it goes so we'll with the book
Low key Kay needs to be recognized for his honesty. For a second he reaches for power and almost immediately you see him realize it was wrong and tell the truth
They both had the same dad. Dad did good.
Kay was high in Arthur's council and raised the call for war against Mordred and Morgana.
Kay, and Percival
Key Characters ❤❤
That is the part that always stands out to me--props Kay
This may very well be one of the greatest films ever made. Cast, costume, story, acting, set, score, editing...its all there
agreed
It is
Definitely a masterpiece in all realms of artistry .
The imagery, the music the acting, it is truly a work of art.
I would prefer to call it moments of absolute majesty interspersed with episodes of trudging dullness.
@@M1tjakaramazov Well, perhaps its time to get back to watching fast and the furious and the ghost busters remake.
@@bieituns Suggest you grab your dayjob like a lifering at sea...

Wagner 😊
For the last 40 years any time someone is having trouble doing something my friends and I have instinctively yelled, "Let the boy try!".
This is awesome.
Of all the King Arthur movies, this one will always be my favorite.Love it.
No others do justice to Malory's seminal version of the Arthurian legend like this film.
One of the greatest movies in cinema history.
Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren and Nicol Williamson are three wonderful actors, they are part of what makes a great story into a fabulous performance.
Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne too.
Don't forget a very young Ciarán Hinds(Caesar on "Rome" and Mance Raydor on "Game Of Thrones"). You see him at 1:49
@@darrenm1386 Hinds also had that supporting role in "There Will Be Blood".
I still marvel at how well Wagner’s Der Ring does Nieberlungen music gets integrated into this film. It blew my mind as an 18-year old when I first saw it at the New Varsity Theatre in Palo Alto back in 1981.
Last time I checked that had been turned into a bookstore, but that was 10 years ago...
there are bound to be similarities since the stories have them too
I love this film. The very first VHS tape I ever bought was this movie. Must've watched it 50 times! It's terrific. I really love the music. Its so perfect in its ability to set the scenes I almost tear up at the end because I want to be transported to that place and time again. It never fails to affect me.
Wagner...
This movie is magical.
This is the best of all of the movies about King Arthur and the Knights of the round table, and a personal favorite. I have seen it dozens of times. A fine flim, so well done!
Nicol Williamson was the best in this film, the best of all Merlin's.
Absolutely!!
Merlin: "Looking at the cake is like looking at the future, until you've tasted it what do you really know? And then, of course, it's too late."
_[Arthur takes a bite]_
Merlin: "Too late."
Man, when Arthur draws the sword. Chills! The whole scene. Best Arthur ever.
Richard Wagner. Perfect music for swordplay and heroic themes.
I cried everytime.
Lighting is so incredible. The green (magic) light seems to shine from the sword itself
"If a boy has been chosen... MAKE IT SO!"
"Number one."
HA HA HA
patrick stewart..valiant as ever
My apologies. I've only just noticed this comment. I made the same connection in the comments, but you were definitely here well before me! Great minds an' all that!
Always listen to Jean-Luc!
I love the detail of Arthur almost falling over backwards, having expected it to be difficult to withdraw Excalibur from the stone.
MVP of the entire movie is Kay, he stayed true to his knightly vows and couldn’t tell a lie.
Still my favorite medieval movie of all time.
yamamancha Actually set in the Dark Ages or early Christian Britain. A major theme is the rise of Christianity and the fading of the Pagan worldview....pre Alfred the Great...Boorman gave them medieval armor to give it a timeless aspect.
If there was ever a movie that defined the 80s, this is it. Superb.

meanwhile modern retard directors spend millions of cgi and its all less than worthless, subtracting from their films, never mind adding to them
@@50srefugee that scene with Uryans is amazing!
Boorman created one of the best versions of the Arthurian Legend of all time !
"What is the secret of the Grail.... ?"
One of the GREATEST MOVIES...... EVER
An epic scene..just incredible when he pulls the sword out a second time and the people kneel...everyone in the theater erupted in cheers!
The score in this movie is probably one of the best, it sets the mood for the hole film scene to scene
One of my all time favorite movies.
The orchestral combination of Carl Orff's magnificent Carmina Burana (O Fortuna) and Wagner gives this an epic quality. More Opera than Film.
Still in my top five movies for sure.
WHELP. now i have to watch Excalibur again.
One of many great scenes in a spectacular movie.
Corny !? what !? One of the greatest films ever made ! Nuff said !
Some love for the quiet little druidic sword keeper...
He took the sword out of the stone every night to polish it...
He slept when king arrived.
And was asleep in the most important moment. Sound asleep.
Arthur just casualy handing Excalibur to Kay is kinda funny like, oh hey someone stole your sword but here is this one that makes you King.
I totally agree! He was my favorite character of this wonderful film (and so many of the actors are fabulous). I was saddened to hear of Williamson's recent death. Long live Merlin!
First watched this when I was about 11. Always stuck with me. Fantastic movie. Id love a remaster. Just wee touches here and there.
Yea me too. I first watched it on HBO in my parents bedroom, at low volume ofcourse. Good times.
Brilliant music to accompany a truly great film !
A masterpiece in my opinion, and second to Blade Runner as my favorite movie!
truly a man of culture
Those are truly my top two as well. Great minds. A few more. But those two are never wrong in any way. Beyond master pieces.
Perfect blend of swords and magic!
One of my favourite movies.
This movie is on my top 10 list of best movies of all time.. the one and only best King Arthur movie of all time..
RIP - Nigel Terry - 15 August 1945 - 30 April 2015

The best king Arthur of all time.
one of the greatest superhero movie ever made
Picard as Guinevere's father already! That voice.
Swords distributed by watery tarts is no basis for a government
I mean if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away

THE SWORD !!!.....THE SWORD !!!.....THE SWORD HAS BEEN DRAWN !!!!!...... ( And of Course The Rest Is THE STUFF THAT LEGEND IS MADE OF !!!...... )....
"I saw what I saw! The boy drew the sword! If a boy has been chosen a boy shall be king!"
One of the best movies I ever saw. Brilliantly cast, played and directed. And the music... It gets me every time.
Me, a republican, would give my allegiance to THIS King Arthur and follow him to the gates of hell.
What the fuck does being a republican have to do with anything?
à Masterpiece a work of Art ...
Grew up watching this movie. Great movie
WHAT? You are chosen King just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Glad this video is still up
I remember when this came out when I was just a kid it was the first live action movie on King Arthur that I saw of the other ones that were made this is the number one of them all .
Nicol Williamson,,was excellent in this... All round movie classic
I love the way there is huge gravitas with the way Arthur acts like father dougle and then Richard bouquet!!
You must put it back! Gets me every time.
This movie creates such a memorable atmosphere. A true classic.
The music from Wagner just enhanced this movie 😊
"You freed it Arthur?"
"I did Father. I beg your forgiveness."
"You must put it back!"
Great lines!
Very good film and a great success to put Wagner's music in it, it gives it an unsurpassed grandeur
Love the background music to thos film. John Boorman directed this film. I really hope the actors had a blast making this film.
You don’t just watch this film, you experience it. Best sword and sorcery film if not better than LOTR.
He was man who had the courage to accept problems belonging to others far surpassing himself he done good
1:15 I like how Arthur went from a idiotic squire to a great and wise king.
I always liked that after just a moment, Kay had integrity and gave Arthur his dues.
I really enjoy this film now and as a kid
Let's be honest it's the Wagnerian music that gives the film it's real dramatic power.
People are stupid. Especially those that dislike this classic.
favorite film of all time. framed movie poster on my wall. 🔥🙌🗡️
Love it
Live it❤
Merlins timing is epic
Patrick Stewart completely stole the scene at the end.
That voice !!!❤❤❤
He has a way of doing that. 🙂
Uryens and his constant aaaarrrghing and his bellowing voice...but he's an honorable knight who is dedicated to Arthur after knighting him.
I think this film is a wonderful example of how a 'bad' movie can still be fun and rewatchable. There is something magical about it.
It's an excellent movie in every way.
Great Movie! Bite your tongue, Sir!!!
The roaring and shouting from the knights is amusing. A high Testosterone society!
In the scenes before this one every one of those knights had been jousting, so they were full of adrenaline and come-at-me-bro energy.
If Jean Luc Picard says that it must be so then it must be so. Make it so!
In my top 10 favorite of all time movies
Boy those holodeck adventures are crazy cool.
A+ film....gets better as it ages!
What a chapter it was in English subject.....
A palavra de Jesus como uma espada de dois gomes
Jean-Luc Picard said it!!!!!
“I was your son before I became your king” he’s crowned himself and already thinking of himself as king and it’s been like 60 seconds since he removed the sword.
Because greatness runs through his veins and what he said was the truth.
Captain Picard........when he still had.....some hair.
Gorgeous film, and a epic soundtrack by Wagner. 2 wins.
Just a little observation. Uryens tries with all of his might to draw the sword and can't. Arthur grabs it with one hand and yanks it out. I always thought that was kind of funny. This is one of my favorite films of ALL time.

When I saw this movie, the part where teenage Arthur drew the sword outside the joust reminds me of Walt Disney’s Sword in the Stone.
Greatest movie ever made
And this movie has Patrick Stewart before he became Picard.
And this is how parliamentary disputes were born
It’s the best Arthur movie out there I would say. Proper 80s film. Bit like Highlander etc you could get away with it back then and be a classic. Nowadays people don’t have imagination.
