So close. So so close to finishing. If it wasn't for that one last cable that I used on the Bomber I'd have been able to finish this. I should have checked my stock!
Ok so lessons learnt here:
- Don't powder coat light parts that have potentially been soldered together. It will destory them.
- Don't thread in, even if it's just till it catches, a mismatching cup in the bottom bracket. Someone might try and tighten it and destroy the threads
- Frame locks are an absolute pain to remove
- Rod brakes require a little more attention than caliper brakes.
Very nice restoration. Love the crankset. Looks better without the chain guard.
Looks a treat - Bravo - I'm hoping a film scout comes knocking on your door wanting it as a prop - Where you agree to a written rental term of $30 per hour on set or $300 per day with an agreed written minimum daily rental contract of.seven days with fully comp damage insurance cover👍 😀 Because truely thats what your efforts - passion and work are worth. Best wishes & Happy pedalling 🙏
That'd be nice!
so recognizable, all of those issues, small and large, that come with restoring vintage bikes. You know they're there, just waiting to rear their ugly heads when the job commences. And of course the satisfaction when they're overcome. Well done, the result is beautiful!
Beautiful bike! When you were taking the crank arm off, I thought “What a shame that chainring is covered.” You’ve done an amazing job.
Great transformation!
Thank you!
And yes... This is some glorious work done on that bike!
Looks great. The white tires really pop. Love the paint choice.
Looking at this months later, it's one of your best.
Beautiful work. Lovely bike.
Many thanks!
nice, very nice. I wish we were much closer, I'd think about making an offer on it. Oh! seeing as how this was years ago, I'm sure someone has been enjoying your great work.
Nothing short of exceptional. Excellent work, sir.
The only downside is it makes those of us waiting for Summer to roll around to restart projects look incredibly lazy!
Gone are the days when this type of bicycles were made and traded, but luckily one model is still sold out here in India Named as BSA Deluxe, not the same but about 80% of its parts are same . One thing I liked most is it comes with chrome plated spokes. Very nice restoration. Would like to see more restoration of vintage bicycles, a lot of thanks .
Just finished restoring my first bike and now onto my second. Think I'm getting addicted!
Your poor bank balance!
Thanks for this series of videos. Really helping me with my 1958 Raleigh tourist restoration
Glad to hear it!
End result looks good! Sorry to hear about the problems you encountered along the way.
This is art!
I love your work, what a beautiful bike you restored there.
well done lad, youve brought a great bike back to life to its original body.
That crankset is so nice. Great restoration good job. Bueatiful bike.
Fantastic job, love it! You really have done it justice 👍
Gracias por recuperar y compartir esas bellezas. Saludos Roberto de Uruguay🇺🇾..
Exact right color! Beautiful build!
Love it I’m working on one myself and it’s the same red as well 🥃👍🏽
Wow looks beautiful.. interesting frame, looks like a short wheelbase for those days, must handle really well... great work...
Thanks. It's just an around town cruiser - not really built for performance.
This bicycle is 1 year older than my keirin bike which is build in 1957 nice treasure
Thanks
Beautiful job, your builds are just getting better and better. Love all your vids, they're most inspiring. I'm off to the shed now...
That's a fabulous looking bike. Good job man
Great work, i wished for some footage with some commentary on how it feels riding it though
Nicely done.
Lovely job mate!
Really enjoy your videos, I like working on older bikes and these videos are very informative. I’m doing a 1979 Viscount at the moment, revisiting my youth and cottered cranks!
Keep up the good work.
Great bike, and a great restoration. Would look even more amazing with some gold lines on the long tubes and around the mudguards in my humble opinion.
Where do you get your decals printed? They always add a proper finishing touch to any restoration.
Man, I thought cantilever brakes were annoying... They have nothing on these. Excellent work and kudos for keeping these original.
I wish they were canti's!
Beautiful job! I never heard a chain guard called a chain case, I like hearing the different ways things are referred to.
Strictly speaking, a chain guard would be some form of covering to protect the rider's clothes from the chain, where a chain case would be a full enclosure, sealed, carrying a small bath of oil in order to constantly lubricate the chain.
what a beautiful bike !
Thanks
What a great build! Congrats! You’re a really good bike builder. Fun to watch

Great video, the Rudds bike was a great machine you are a genius.
Super job there..Rod brakes though! Not too much fun dealing with those eh..
Nope. Not user friendly at all.
Greetings from Colombia, excellent video, I am restoring a raleigh, and a humber
Awesome. Does the Humber have the beautiful stamped crankset (people holding hands I believe?) and the twin blade forks?
Looks good! You can run LED bulbs if you want, even ones with "stand light" capability that'll keep them lit when you're not moving, good for waiting at intersections.
Its beautiful job.. Buen trabajo.. Mis respetos pra ti mi hrno... My respect for you.. My bro..
Nice job on bike and video.
Thank you
This looks as close to Raleigh's roadsters as makes no difference. Different colour, head badge and chainwheel. Amazingly competent bikes, so long as you don't need to stop in the near future.
Borderlands true, I have a carrier bike and it has the stopping distance of an oil tanker..
Salam sakduluran saklawase dari indonesia 👍
I have this type of bike belongs to my father..i think it is being stored in the barn..after watch your video, i'd like make a restoration for that bike, but the spare parts must be rare now..thank you
I love how you kept the original brakes it would have looked cool with the cain and crank guard on but ohh well... it still looks amazing with out it awesome job 😊
Thanks 👍
Nice restoration. Many years ago I had a similar Rudge though it was plain black.
The wheel rims you've put on are not compatible with stirrup brakes though
So there were some rims that were both rod brake and rim brake. Rim brakes used Endrick style rims. Rod brakes used Westwood style rims. Then there were some special rims that has the Endrick sides for rim brakes but the curved profile like the Westwood for rod brakes. I believe they're commonly refered to as Westrick rims.
Rudge bicycle lovely job man after my own heart it's one of my passions old bikes first bike I had from jumble sale 12/6 had for brake's too well done ole buddy nice job
Where do you source the three rivets for the front badge?
John Dupuis
@@laurarojascortes2049 sorry don’t quite understand what you mean by source the rivets
@@michaelbritton9778 nice 👍🥰 e goode. ,🚴merci. Bocu
@@michaelbritton9778 nice. Goode. Merci👍🚴🥰
Great job 👍
you can get a sealed bearing cotter pin bottom bracket spindle that threads to its self. i use one after a previous owner destroyed the threads on my bike. i believe its an italian style.
Ah so you can! I didn't realise you could get threadless BB's in cottered style
DEAR FRIEND ; I AM VERY HAPPY HAVING SEEN THIS OLD BICYCLE RESTORATION. BECAUSE CYCLE IS A GOOD ASSERT PASS ESS GENERATIONS TO GENERATIONS; NEEDS ONLY A LITTLE CURRENCY FOR MAINTAINANCE; BESIDES NO LICENCES, NO POLOUTION, NO FUEL, NO PUNISHMENTS. CAN RIDE FROM CHILD HOOD TO THE THAN GRAND FATHER/ MOTHER. BESIDES LAKHS OF MECHANICS AVAILABE...
ANNAPARTHY SREENIVASARAO wtf is lakh and please don’t use all caps.
Nice men
Well done !!
Thanks!
Great build as usual, need to see it in motion .
bravo
It's just great to see that stunning crank and sprocket on display, it accentuates the shape of that yummy frame, nice restoration, love that you didn't polish the shi# out of everything, it looks great!
I reckon those whitewalls will be brown/grey walls soon and you'll finish it off with some black tyres and let that red really pop!
Thanks!
Beautiful Work !!
Thanks a lot!
Really nice job mate love that colour
Didn't have much to work with. Came out nice.
Lovely job, very nice finish :-) I'm curious as to how you solved the issue with the bottom bracket though...
Ooo yes. I had the bike shop chase the rest of the threads with the 24tpi tool they had (and also bought one myself). Not ideal but the cups thread in and hold now and I got to use the Rudge crankset.
Ive had to retap threads on an old raleigh 3spd
She’s a beauty ❤️❤️
Thanks!
Holy Cow.... that is beautiful
Good job well done!
Thanks.
One of your most beautiful builds. Love it!! Why didn't you end up keeping the original seatpost/seat mounting assembly (not sure what else to call it?)
Looks good, but rod brakes are lethal. And yes, I do have (lots of ) experience!
Why's that ? You mean to powerful or no braking ?
@@johnnyboy1586 Weak as a weak thing with an extra special reason to be weak! there is a real reason why they eventually fell out of use.
Why no rust remover for easier unscrewing the bolts? Its not good to unscrew the bolts completly dry. The bracket for the head light could be finished nicer. Still great job on restoring. Nice to see old bikes on the road and not on junkyard.
Maybe you can replace the loose bearing with sealed bearing for bottom bracket
Beautiful bike! I have not seen this brake system on post-war bikes in my country.
its still there on many indian bikes, check out indian brands like Hero cycles, Atlas cycles etc, their basic models still have this kind of breaks, they are long lasting and easy to repair
Nice job done there! The bike looks fantastic. But i would put on other brakes for safety.
Yeh... rod brakes aren't the best... at all
very nice bicycle, great job.
Congratulation! You did a fine job with this.
Is that the fixed cup still in the frame? British threaded drive-side bottom bracket cups are counter-clockwise threaded (backwards). There are several special tools that an older bicycle shop would have: Stein, Var and others. Were any of the components replated? You got the fixed cup out. A custom frame builder might be able to help with the BB threads. I work in a bicycle shop and I have made mistakes. Everyone I have ever worked for, wished I worked that fast. If you grease the stem steerer tube interface, the stem will not get stuck. Pedal threads as well. In the states, we have a few specialty bicycle shop-museums that stock components no longer manufactured. I imagine that is true for Raleigh bicycles as well. I found applying a ridiculous amount of leather treatment to the underside of a new saddle will help it break in.
Lengthy comment. Yep I know all those tips and tricks thanks.
@@MonkeyShred I apologise I had not seen any of your other videos
great video by the way,you did a great job of videoing your work.
Thanks for the video - very helpful as I am half way through a similar restoration. I am having trouble sourcing some of the parts I need including some of the rod brake parts. Do you have any ideas on parts suppliers?
Had to jump on my phone been watching you for quite a while now got introduced to you when I came across your commuter bike frame breaking during your ride me and my mum loves your videos you do amazing job keep up your fantastic work and long overdue I subscribed to you watch you on my xbox one lol
With a lovely, comfortable Brooks saddle.
(comfortable after one rides it 100,000 miles !! )
I own a couple of brand new Brooks saddles. They're comfy out the box for me.
The chain case may have been restored if you could find a workshop to braze them back together. Its a process similar to silver soldering but uses a brass based solder at a much higher tempetature and its a lot stronger as well as being able to withstand the temperatures of powder coating. it's a pity they didn't do that in the first place. I'm sure the rest of the frame was probably brazed together...
What a pain the rod brakes are. Do they actually work? You had to keep them because of all of the provisions for them on the frame and this is one bike that needs to be restored not modded but you can see why caliper brakes superceded them.
This is a bike for the village vicar or for some old Charlie heading down to the allotments. Still think you need some kind of a chain guard to be honest. Bike like this looks odd without a chain guard of some kind because it's meant to be ridden in "civvies". Maybe a stainless one since a matching red will be hard to find. You also need some cycle clips (trouser clips ) mounted on it somewhere even if you aren't going to use them - classic old geezer kit.
The bike looks comfy. Bars and saddle look inviting as long as it's only a few miles and no hills.
I did Eroica Britannia a few years back in 35c sun on a bike of this style around the hilly Peak district. 65 miles of hills and I only got off once. Horrible riding position for hills though if you're out the saddle.
Finished bike looks great!
Ok top
Great Job, i have also a Oldschool Bike
It's from the old Bikefaktory ,, Diamant ''
Greatings from Germany,
Oldschoolfrank
Beautiful bike ! Good work !
Nicely done!
I wish you took that extra step to just remove the rust on those nuts and smaller parts. An even further step would be to buy new nuts and take those small parts to an electroplating shop.
It's not asking for to much to dump those bits into a can of paint thinner and then go through them with an old toothbrush.
Everything was polished if my memory serves me right but once the chrome has gone... Unfortunately rechroming everything would cost far too much for this project
@@MonkeyShred A good solution could be just plain metal polish with a high speed buffer. Then finish it off with a clear coat to preserve the shine.
Fantastic job. Plan on doing something like this myself one day. Why not line the lugs? It would look great lined with gold paint.
I don't know really. I liked the wine red and the chrome. Maybe adding another olour would complicate things.
Correct - that is the shifter for the internal hub
@@MonkeyShred
yo tengo una igual dé tres velocidades marca Raleigh pero otro sistema dé frenos
done not a bad job of that one, how about fitting a half chain guard, at least will help it look more retro than is at the minute.
I use to rework old bikes Loved it......
Hermosa bike
Brother, wat a cool Job 👍💪💪💪👍
Wonderful build! Thanks for sharing. Did you need to peen over the rivets for the headbadge (on the inside of the head tube) to avoid rubbing on the steerer portion of the fork? (That's the thing about these restorations among we who have tinkered with such problems -- the questions get really particular!)
I did to a degree and then filed them down slightly to make a bit of clearance. It's a fairly awkward place to get in there to peen them over but with the right side rivets they "grip" in to the edge of the hole in the frame.
Maybe the chain guard could be resolderd and then repainted?
I’d need a Time Machine first.
