1956 Claud Butler - Vintage Bicycle "Rustoration"

  • Sometime last year I bought two rusty bikes off eBay for £30; a mid 70's Raleigh Scorpio and this 1956 Claud Butler. The Scorpio was in the better condition, of the two, so I quickly cleaned that up and sold it on but the Claud has sat at the back of my garage ever since.
    The Claud has a lot of rust on it and to some, is only good for scrap but I thought the old details were too nice to let go. I could have chosen to send the frame off to a bike specialist like Mercian for a complete restoration but with the price tag attached to that, it's not something I could justify. That was when I decided to try a "rustoration" so to speak. Clean it and lock it in time.
    Parts replaced:
    Front and rear rims - Rear rim was completed rusted and the front was a 80's ish replacement. Replacement rims are Dunlop LA rims. Fancy.
    Front hub - Whoever had replaced the front wheel had used the wrong sized front hub. I built the front wheel with one of my period spares adding some GB "quick release" nuts.
    Saddle - The original padded saddle was torn and rivets were broken so I replaced it with a Brooks B17 Standard that I had lying around.
    Stem - As a temporary measure I have replaced the original stem with a GB spearpoint. At some point I want to replate the original stem and use it again.
    I've cleaned every steel part and every chrome part in Oxalic Acid to remove the rust. The frame and forks have been sprayed with a top coat to try and "lock in" the age. Every alloy part has been cleaned and polished extensively. All cables and bearings replaced.
    The most difficult part? Getting the rear hub working. It was seized solid! It took a lot of soaking and a complete strip down and clean to work again, something I've never tried before. I found out the main problem was the locating collar for the shifting pin was seized to the shaft but I'm happy to say now, after a lot of cleaning, everything works!
    It's quite clearly still got signs of rust but the bike was too good to scrap and I'm happy with the result.
    Hope you enjoyed the video.

    Yes, 1956, That was when I was in my prime at 18, Claud Buttler, No 1 Bike frame builder for London, But I had my bike frame built by Condor cycles. They were a lot cheaper and just as good with fancy scrolled lug work, ( I'm useing a 10" Samsung tablet for this comment, And it's doing the thinking for me, It's on thought mode. ) I'm impressed with the Dutch, They have made an industry out of restoring there antique bycicles. The big step in too bike feels as if I was riding in an arm chair. And a woman in full evening dress would have no difficulty stepping on or off one of those splendid upright antique bicycles. 1957 At Bagshot, The 1st year of the, National Cyclo-cross championship in the U.k. I road with the Army team, 68 of us at the start, 28 finished, I think,! Very disauganized, I came in 2nd to last. I got a good ovation from the 50 or so spectators. Most of them were friend's of mine.

    Last year I took my fathers 26" Diskus bike from 1955 and gave it a complete overhaul. It was in much worse shape than yours. The only thing I left untouched was the frame. All other parts went through a total restaurarion incl new chrome for the cranks, steering, brakes, etc. It was a lot of work but it payed off when I presented it to it's owner in october '18 for his 80st birthday!

  • @Sooperhans3636
    @Sooperhans3636 8 лет назад +35

    Well done! I prefer the preservation route to full on restoration. I'd rather the frame have a nice patina than a respray. It's only original once, as they say.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  8 лет назад +4

      Thank you. I have a 1946(ish) Norman Rapide in the pipeline too. It's still showing all the original transfers, albeit very faded, but the top tube seems to have suffered from, I guess, a lot of sweat dripping on to it. I'm borderline whether to send it to be professionally refurbished or preserve the bike. Tough choice on this one.

    • @Sooperhans3636
      @Sooperhans3636 8 лет назад +1

      Man, you get your hands on some properly old bicycles! I haven't done anything earlier than a 1972 Atala Record Professional. I just touched up a mid 80's Peugeot road frame with a similar issue. I sanded back the rusted area to bare metal, coated it with rust converter (Kurust in the UK) which turns it black. Then I matched the paint as best I could using enamel model paints (going to try automotive lacquers next time) and touched it up with a brush. It looks okay as is but I'm going to try and distress the touched up area with a heat gun to match the age of the original paint on the frame. Hopefully it'll work out. Keep up the good work!

    That is one heck of a classy restoration job mate, the temptation to respray and re-chrome is so strong, I don't know how you resisted but am glad you did and to keep the rich patina is fantastic. Is one of the things I love about cycling is how every bike tells a story and you have certainly kept the story alive there. Also great to see the made in England on the rims and brakes. How do you ever put a price on a bike like that, impossible is what I'd say. Well done.

Am working on a old Schwinn ten speed now made it to a single speed and changing the look with fatter vintage looking seat more urban style handle bars and a wooden box in the rear. VERY VERY nice build!!! Absolutely love that you kept the rusty look!!! What was in the "bath" you pulled the frame out of? Excellent bike, excellent video.
