Hi Rig Doc. I’m looking at building a new rig. Taking your advice into consideration. Would you recommend using a Warick V16 as a power supply? I can’t find if it’s the type you recommend to eliminate low noise. Also looking at getting one of your vertex boost pedals as a boost/buffer. Is there one you would recommend over the other?
The best part of this… I didn’t look at all 400 + comments. But every one I did read, I notice Mason answered questions or commented on. That is SO excellent. How many other people do that? Very rare. High quality…
I built my rig based on your early video designed around a Boss MS3. I built the DIY buffer based on the bill of materials, switched to the CIOCKS power. I send one side out to an IK multimedia interface and run presets from the iPad via midi, and can go out the other side buffer to an amp. The crown jewel is the new UP mkII.
The TS-10. I've had one of these since the early 90s. It's still my favorite overdrive for blues and even metal. I love how it pushes my Fender with my Les Paul.
Lovely mate. Thank you for sharing. As you know we all love the clean pristine build approach. Let alone all the sweet as gear on your board. Thanks again. I liked and subscribed. Ps. Really like your new pedalboards. If I had to deal with playing out right now I would seriously consider buying one...down the road may get one, or maybe sooner! You've have given us so much useful information and guides for setting up our effects systems. I completely rewired my pedalboard and purchased a dedicated buffer a couple of years ago after watching one of your videos...was a good move for me. Thanks!
Usually it's just with the Boost to add saturation to the other pedals, but I felt like I was getting enough gain with the DGT that I didn't need to to much stacking to get sounds I was happy with.
Thanks for the great video(s). I've bought into the soldered cables koolaid (!) and I'm redoing my board with Square Plugs and Best-tronics CA-0678 wire. One tip (and maybe you've covered this on your patch cable vids) that works for me is to take into consideration the direction of the plugs; both up, one up-one-down, etc... The CA-0678 wire doesn't twist much so the plug orientation is important for the supplies I'm using, particularly on short patch cables. Again, thank you for the information and videos!
We’ve mentioned this in other videos and recommend doing one side at a time so you can dress and wire into your 1/4” jacks with the exact angle with no additional slack.
Great rundown very comprehensive and everything was explained in ‘normal’ terms. Much appreciated. I would have liked to hear your overview and demo of the Cab M pedal sometime. Thanks from Canada! Eh…
I need to upgrade my cabling, my input/output buffer and i want to get rid of my stereo set up and change it to mono but with an amp switcher, get a true bypass looper to get my boss buffers out of my signal chain when the pedals are disengaged, and last but not least, get better dirt pedals. I want to get a klon style, a tube screamer style, and now i really want that SSS. That thing sounds fantastic!
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks man! I really want to buy a soldering iron and learn soldering. Building a buffer would be awesome, but i really want to be able to make my own cables and get my board as clean and tight as the ones u make. Every build u do is just beautiful!
Your board is very very similar to mine in many ways. (Boss GE-7>Kingsley Minstrel>Nobels ODR-1>Hermidia Dover Drive >RC Boost V2>Arion SCH-1>Vertex Boost>El Cap> Flint. Nice setup!
Did you hear that guys ... " Soldered cables " I say this cause I've seen many G L's style patch cables fail or give trouble . Great looking board Mason !!!
I don't understand how people use multiple drive pedals/stack them. How do you balance out the outputs so one pedal is not to loud or quiet by itself? I have fiddled with it and always run into that problem or have to hit 2 pedals to go from clean to drive tones. A drive stack video would be great!!!!
If you're soloing, staying at unity won't be very helpful, also in a track the difference of 3-4dB isn't that noticeable with a full mix, just like you have to make a gain way more saturated to sound like it has any noticeable gain in a track. Of course you can also use a volume pedal too as a pad if you need it.
I always run my TS808 at really low gain last in the drive chain and that evens out a lot of the volume and gives all the drives a basic tone structure. Then I run my JHS Charlie brown still at very low gain when I need a crunch tone, a Havalina fuzz for fuzzy tones and the Charlie boosted with an Archer in front for leads. Believe it or not, if you keep the gain down on each stage, you can improve your rig's efficiency a lot and it helps even if you have to play each time through different backline amps because the 808 is acting as your drive section's master volume. Also, this way I'm able to control my Archer's huge huge volume range a lot better than running it on its own.
Man the SSS is so sick. I need to look at more in depth videos on it but it sounds so good. Im indifferent on the dumble overdrive tones but the clean tone is amazing. I obviously can’t afford a dumble lol, but I’m considering a ceriatone ots20 or the sss and just running it into a fryette powerstation.
Still, if you need to switch a couple of pedals on and maybe one off for a quick change of tone and maybe you need to do it while singing, you need a switcher. I get the small board factor and I love your works, but in some contexts, a switcher is just the only way to go. I am a singer/lead-guitarist, I mostly play 2h or more gigs with 7/8 different sounds and being able to do the one stomp trick is crucial.
Somehow people made music for decades without switchers - but I agree with you, they can be handy. I think there is a place for them, and I own them myself, but for what I do most of, I don't need any programming and most of us guitar players don't typically if we're honest with ourselves. Thanks for watching and for sharing your perspective.
@@VertexEffectsInc that's a good point. In the end, whatever works for the player, works. I used to play with no board at all for quite a lot of time and I totally enjoyed it, now I have (HAD, damned Covid!) a set that requires some more specific tones and the switcher does the trick just fine. By the way, thanks for your YT content, I watch it all and I really love it!
I'm curious about the board you built around the HX Effects compared to this. Is this a replacement or just simpler. I'm going to use the rest of my Covid break to make a nice board and I have the HX Effects but I haven't decided whether to do something like that or something like this. Either way I plan to use the SSS. I thought I was done with my pedal phase SSS is the first new pedal I've ordered in quite a while but it got to me.
I was building that board more because we were being asked about how to integrate it so I thought we'd make one showing it with external pedals and a controller. I gave the board away after the build. I would suggest if you go that route you go with the Voodoo Lab Hex. I think the buffers are important to have and the Line 6 will color the tone some if you don't have them in place. So glad you dig the SSS! Can't wait to see your rig with it on there!
If my first pedal is a Fuzz Face i shouldn't put a buffer before right? My pedal-chain has over 6 pedals, but run a catalinbread belle epoch with a buffer at the end of the signal to compensate any signal loss, thanks Mason.
Alan, my pleasure. The Boss buffers just aren't comparable to the quality of buffers we can make now. They've remained relatively unchanged for about 30 years. They weren't designed to address today's pedal applications and are poor line drivers, have a lot of color, add noise, and attenuate your output for each series of Boss buffers you run through (almost every pedal of theirs has at least two buffers in series - a JFET input and BJT output).
Hi Mason, I really love all these videos, i'm learning a lot!! Just a question on the output buffer: I'm considering buying a strymon Iridium, do I still need the output buffer between my last pedal and the Iridium? because in this scenario there wouldnt' be any long cable after the output buffer and before the Iridium. cheers from italy
Enjoyed it. You said early on you would give examples of how you stack your dirt for different sounds but I think you were running out of time. Might be a great follw up video. Thank you sir!
Watching your channel many times, and as a gigging musician, I decided to make a board similar to the ones I see you work on, yet not as elaborate. I went with a Boss ES-5 for all my switching....I use VooDoo Labs Pedal Power 2's for all my pedals. Can you power this unit with the PP2??
Hey, Doc. I love your rigs, they are awesome! I have a pedalboard like pedal train, and I think many other guitar players have one like that. Could you give us some ideas on how to organize our rig on pedal train? I would be very grateful 😉
3:13 kinda curious how you got to these numbers: 1MG/100ohm I/O impedance. I have the Flir from ThorpyFX which I thought was a good choice but his pedal's profile is input impedance 10M Ohm output impedance 33K Ohm. What am I missing here?
Hi Mason, love your channel! will you use the pedalboard in stereo by placing the cab m before the collider, the collider would sound way better, no? An high quality direct box after the collider would assure you a balanced signal. What do you think? Thanks, Daniel
Thanks for watching! It's still in mono through the Cab M, it's split in the interface/buffer so it's just two mono signals, one goes to the amp, one goes to the Cab M. I don't usually use them both, just one or the other - but I could use both if I wanted. I don't think it sounds better and I couldn't use it with my amp side if I did that. If you wanted to run the Collider in post, you'd be better off using the line output and feed it into something like the Cab Zeus to feed another channel on your mixer and use it more like a wet/dry type thing, or wet/dry/wet if you used it in stereo and it already has it's own parallel mixer and goes 100% wet/kill dry.
Hey Mason, recently purchased one of your pedalboards through Sweetwater, very cool getting your products available through them. Question about the riser screws, is there a thumbscrew available from you, or some kind of quick-latch device to put there instead of regular screws? I like to have it fastened because I like to pick the whole board up by the shelf, but I also need to access underneath at gigs without having to use a screwdriver. I'm sure I could find thumbscrews somewhere, but maybe you already have something for that? If not, maybe a good idea.. what size are those threads? Thanks man.
Typically I never leave in the front screws and just adjust the hex screw in the back to the tention I want to lift the board up/down. Otherwise any 10/32 thumb screw would work and you can get them a most hardware stores or even Amazon.
Hey Mason, I can't find the exact build for the buffer box in the video here. I would like to run wet / dry with the two notes and collider as well. Thank you for your help. John
Just use the tuner out option and apply that to the output buffer, the splitter option is the same thing as a tuner out just on the output instead of the input of the system.
Hi nice work you do there.. you mention you don't like the boss buffers, would that include the buffers in the ES8 which I use for switching? If so, I'd be interested in a work around, pretty sure I can turn those buffers off if there's something better available. Thanks!
Maybe its not about this awesome pedalboard but, Do you ever use realistic amp simulation plugins with your pedals ? Or is it just not suggestable for professionals especially for recording purpose?
I don't typically use amp plug ins, but a lot of guys do. You could use the pedals into your interface, of course, but many that are going plug ins use all "in the box" stuff for simplicity.
I think any one, pro or novice would agree that for all forms of music-recording, live performance, home play, etc. all of it, if a piece of gear gets you to what you hear in your mind, and want to portray to yourself/others, then it's good. Amp sims, IRs, mics both expensive and cheesy, FXs whether boutique or cheap and unique... It's all good, to some more than others but it's all got a place. Pete Thorn gets great recordings in his home studio with amp Sims and IRs, cab sim, both hardware and software. I just used him as an example because often you can hear him demoing a pedal through modeling toys just as much as a real amp. Of course this is just my opinion and I think of them all as toys/tools,
So man things...BJT buffers are not neutral, loose output and can ever get back to unity gain, increase the noise floor, and that’s just a start. The Boss BJT buffers output impedance is so high, it becomes more unstable the more capacitance seen on the output. They’re a buffer in name, but in no way neutral.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks for the info. Given I’m not playing stadiums just yet I think I’ll just stick with boss for input output for now haha, but interesting to know. Is the buffer in the waza tuner not much better either?
@@peterellwood2103 I don't know if that's the place where you'd hear the difference really. All the Boss Buffers are all pretty much the same, many units actually have more than one buffer so you're getting 2-3x the issue in some devices multiplied by however many Boss devices you have.
Great pedalboard Mason, awesome sounds. Can you compare the sound of the collider and the h9 for reverb and delays? What is your opinion? About the patchable, with using Mogami cable have you the same quality of the belden 8412 like the John Mayer Stile Pedalboard what you have build? This video have shocked me, awesome. Thanks in advance for your fantastic job! Marcello
I prefer the Collider because you can run two effects at once and the H9 is only a single effect. The H9 also only sounds good to me in an effects loop and not ideal for in front of the amp. The Belden 8412 is a great input cable, not a great patch cable. I don’t recommend using it on a pedalboard. Mogami is my preferred cable for in between pedals.
The Helix is totally workable for delay, reverb, modulation, and maybe not as good as some individual units, but very good. For analog overdrives, boosts, etc. it's not comparable.
Great video. Ive found your channel a couple of months ago and I'm really enjoying it. Do you think that even the BOSS TU-3 Waza doenst have a great buffer?
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks for the response! I was about to buy one to replace my good old polytune (true bypass) which I love, just for the buffer. What about the buffers on the Musicomlab switcher EFX MKV, are they as good as Mesa High Wire? Cheers from Brazil doc!!
Great info. I do have a question. I use a podgo with other pedals to free up dsp. Should I use a buffer? I have a wampler dual fusion, eh freeze, ditto x4, beat buddy drum machine. I'm really new to setting stuff like this up. I'm from the day of front of amp with 2 pedals. Lol.
First off your board sounds and looks spectacular...really sweet....On your rec I have bought the Mesa High Wire.....But I am going crazy trying to put these pedals in the best order as far as noise and efficiency goes....I have the Mesa Buffer....an Analogman BC 109 fuzz ....a Mission Re-wah wah pedal.....A Polytune TC Electronics tuner...A Love pedal Rubber Chicken Envelope filter...and an Effectrode PC 1a compressor.....trhis is just the beginning of my chain ..all in series.....any help would be much appreciated...I know you say buffer first but other people tell me Fuzz first? Help!
I would put the Fuzz before the input of the Mesa Boogie High Wire for best performance. Use the Tuner out of the tuner out on the High Wire. I like the filter as close to the guitar as possible, so maybe the first pedal after the High Wire input buffer?
Jason, do you have any recommendations if one has neither the time nor inclination to build a DYI stereo buffer? In other words, can I buy one from your company? Many thanks.
We don't yet offer custom buffer interfaces, however we will have some hitting the market shortly that will do all the common set ups. Stereo, Mono, 4 Cable Method, Wet/Dry, Wet/Dry/Wet.
Hey there! The end of the chain, you split the signal to either be able to go into an amp or use the CAB M. What do I need to split a signal from the last pedal? Is it just a one in two out box and then one out goes to the cab M and one would go to the amp? That way you have two OUT choices?
I used a custom made buffer splitter that is inside the interface box, however you can get one from Suhr (Suhr Buffer) which has an input and two buffered outputs (one of them isolated).
hi Doc last week you helped me with a question about your riser. I forgot to ask about clearance . Can you please tell me if a 6" lid will fit over it ? Nothing on top row higher than a boss .Thanks.

Great tone!!!!!
Thanks Joe!
Is that a new system of measurement? TPSI - Tone Per Square Inch?
Yes, indeed it is!
Beautiful board and playing there Mason. Your Ultraphonix sure is tasty. Cheers
Thank you for watching! I can’t live without my Ultraphonix!
If my first pedal is a Fuzz Face i shouldn't put a buffer before right? My pedal-chain has over 6 pedals, but run a catalinbread belle epoch with a buffer at the end of the signal to compensate any signal loss, thanks Mason.
Fuzz before buffers, yes. You can put an input buffer after the fuzz in most cases without consequence, but before the fuzz won't work.
Man that is awesome. Enjoy.
So glad you dig it!
Lovely playing. God Bless!
🙏🙏🙏
Nice clean board 👍
🙏🙏🙏
First of all thanks for posting this; I got a lot out of it. I'm curious what you don't like about the boss tuner's buffer.
Are you gunna make a video on rhetts new board?!
In progress
Hi Mason, I really love all these videos, i'm learning a lot!!
Just a question on the output buffer: I'm considering buying a strymon Iridium, do I still need the output buffer between my last pedal and the Iridium? because in this scenario there wouldnt' be any long cable after the output buffer and before the Iridium.
cheers from italy
If the iridium is the amp you don’t need an output buffer
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks!!
Sure thing!
Nice! Have you ever heard of anyone trying the SSS on bass? Seems like it would be a good fit.
I haven't, but it's a good idea for us to check that out!
@@JopvanSummeren yes indeed!
Info gold mine! Thanks man!
Great pedalboard. Good job !
🙏🙏🙏
Enjoyed it. You said early on you would give examples of how you stack your dirt for different sounds but I think you were running out of time. Might be a great follw up video. Thank you sir!
I guess we did Boost/Archer but yes worth a figure video for sure!
You can use the courtesy outlet and power your ES-5 from that with the provided adapter.
Loved the ultraphonix! Does it do that "on the edge of feedback thing on its own or is it dependent on your particular gain stages and/or amp?
The amp is dead clean, it'll do it through most anything. It's very "Dumble" in that regard in really pulling out that feedback
Hey, Doc.
I love your rigs, they are awesome!
I have a pedalboard like pedal train, and I think many other guitar players have one like that. Could you give us some ideas on how to organize our rig on pedal train? I would be very grateful 😉
Watch the Kerry Marshall pedalboards build video and we go though all that
@@VertexEffectsInc oh, thanks doc
@@FelipeNorato no problem!
3:13 kinda curious how you got to these numbers: 1MG/100ohm I/O impedance. I have the Flir from ThorpyFX which I thought was a good choice but his pedal's profile is input impedance 10M Ohm output impedance 33K Ohm. What am I missing here?
PS. I have your Arion/Landau Chorus in my board, is the best chorus I've ever heard, superb.
I love that chorus!!! One of my faves
I wish you would do a video to let us see how the steele string etc. sounds thru a marshall plexi... after all its one of the most iconic amp ever !!
It is iconic, but no many people would use one live...too much headroom, too loud.
Nice board!
Heck yea! Thanks Craig!
Thanks for the RIG Dr. Marangella, how do you treat order /placement of vintage type Fuzz pedals in a double buffered environment?
put it before the input buffer
@@VertexEffectsInc cool beans, Thanks
@@josephfelice601 you got it!
Sounds great.
Glad you dig it!
@@VertexEffectsInc thank you
@@johnschoppmusic my pleasure!
Hi nice work you do there.. you mention you don't like the boss buffers, would that include the buffers in the ES8 which I use for switching? If so, I'd be interested in a work around, pretty sure I can turn those buffers off if there's something better available. Thanks!
Yes, I bypass them and use external buffers when I use that switcher.
What a great board. I wonder if it's possible to get the Ultra-Phonix in South Africa
Sure - no problem
@@VertexEffectsInc got to respect you for replying to everyone, even on a mobth old video!
@@michaeldschutte sure thing!
Looks great dude, perfect board size! Full loaded, how much does this new board weigh?
Also, I appreciate your helpful and quick customer service. 🤙
For sure! Enjoy that new pedalboard Ryan! The weight 16.95 pounds.
Of course this is just my opinion and I think of them all as toys/tools,
The shoemaker’s kids finally have shoes.
Hahahahhaha!
Nice simple rig, cool. Why you against the boss buffers?
Didn't you showed it on a previous episode? Still pretty good
We did something with Sweetwater, but not explicitly on this channel.
@@VertexEffectsInc Great Mason! Thank you for your answer! All the Best!
@@MarcelloFlorisProGuitarist my pleasure!
I hear some Eric Johnson in your playing too...😎👍🏼
Wow! Thanks!
I hate to ask but how does this compare in terms of sound, size and price to a Helix?
The Helix is totally workable for delay, reverb, modulation, and maybe not as good as some individual units, but very good. For analog overdrives, boosts, etc. it's not comparable.
Great video! How do you cut a hole in the side of the pedalboard for a power pass through? I like the clean look :)
They come like that when you buy our pedalboards from the factory.
So much to learn
Hope this helps!
Has anyone ever used the steel string for mathrock/Midwest emo? I think it would be great for that
Not that I’m aware!
Great video. Ive found your channel a couple of months ago and I'm really enjoying it. Do you think that even the BOSS TU-3 Waza doenst have a great buffer?
I'm so glad you dig it! It's pretty much the same BJT in their other pedals. Looks to maybe have tighter tolerances but is still very average at best.
Lol.
DO you run into an amp?
@@VertexEffectsInc yes a power cab 112.
@@tonygonzalez112 You probably only need an input buffer then.
@@VertexEffectsInc I'll check out buffers from vertex.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks a lot Mason....so Wah before Compressor?
We have a list of compatible cases listed on the website that fit our pedalboards from major manufacturers like Pelican, SKB, and Gator you can check out!
i hope that modded arion chorus will be continued. id really love to have one. LOL
It’s been discontinued since 2014, no plan to reissue it
Is there a significant difference between the 2314 and 2319 cable?
A little, but if you condition the line with high quality buffers any differences become negligible.
