Awesome install! I have the same bmw e46 & just installed the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S thanks to your recommendations. Did you guys have to boost or lower any frequencies in the eq because of the factory HK amp? I also have my volume offset set to -5
Thank you! How did the install go with the 709s? Did you have to do any modifications or did the shallow mount make it pretty easy? We didn't have to tweak it with the Sony in this car, but we used volume offset with a DMX958XR we just did a 2013 X1 with the premium S676 package. Like you, we have it -5 in that car.
@@carstereochick no modifications needed thanks to the shallow mount. I do have a hissing noise coming from the speakers but only when using CarPlay. I updated the firmware and checked the connections, but no luck.
If your E46 has the factory double din you can still use one of the Metra kits listed in the video description. Note there are 2 styles depending on the type of button panel you have below the radio. The only thing that's more of a pain in the models with factory double DIN is the factory tuner and all of your radio connection are in the trunk. So your stereo wire harness needs to be extended, you'll need an antenna extension as well and all of your stereo connections are made in the rear. Additionally, if the car happens to have the digital DSP amp, then you would need to bypass the stock amp. That is quite rare though. Only seen a handful equipped with the digital amp in 24 years.
In the E46? Absolutely. In 99% of the ones we've seen with HK it's always just speaker level. If you have the GPS navigation radio and see options in the EQ for things like Jazz, Concert, Hall, etc. then you might have the top line digital DSP amp and if that's the case, the amp would need to be bypassed. But most of the HK models in the E46 we see have just a speaker level connection and use the same aftermarket wire harness - either a 70-8590 or 70-9003.
Smooth as ever
Thank you :)
very nice install! not much room to work with in those BMWs 😐 I actually like those buttons on the radio 👍 thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!

Does this Sony kit work with Harmon Kardon?
