gym tests don't trigger at all btw, the clerks just say welcome to ____ gym. team star bases also don't really do anything, and the titans just aren't there.

I broke out when I first got the game had the same experience. I was trying to avoid the school as the whole starter zone was so boring. Could only buy reg balls and battle trainers. I did manage to start the game with lvl 60-7x mons though. lol
Yeah, nothing will start until you visit school to get all 3 paths, oddly enough though you CAN get the surf titans flying marker early but... It does nothing. I don't think it was letting me use it before going to school but it definitely will not allow you after the titan is there making getting it early pointless., Area Zero's gate is also closed until the treasure hunt but is randomly opened for it despite us not supposed to be in there... Like we might be able to glitch there early, just not that early.
The __ gym is the hardest gym, have you even seen it?

That egg you leveled up and can't access....it rembered what experience it was leveled up to before when you used the rare candy on it. So even if it's a place holder that exist outside of your party, it retains memory/data outside your party of changes that occur to it.
I wonder what would happen if it reaches level 100, maybe it hatches then or something else? or nothing happens? but who would take the time for lettiing respawning so many candys for leveling to 100?
@@ZedfireX It would probably reach level 100 and if the egg were to ever hatch, whatever the game thinks is inside would come out at level 100. But the egg won't hatch because the number of Pokemon in the party is 0 so it only looks through the first 0 slots (i.e. nothing) for eggs to add steps to when you walk. And since the unused data in slot 1 of your party is probably all 0 bytes at this time, I'm guessing that species 0 is egg. There's another byte in there that says what the egg will hatch into. This is probably 0 as well so you'd get an egg that hatches into another egg, which probably still has a 0 there so it too will be an egg if it hatches.
EDIT: Note, this is speculation based on programming experience and messing with previous Pokemon games' data structures. I haven't messed with SV's internals.

With how empty the world was looking, until you bumped into the Psyduck at 2:19, I thought Game Freak had programmed it so no wild Pokémon would appear until you had one of your own. Evidently, not the case.
2:56 - Rather cute that the starters still follow you. It would have been cool if a fail-safe triggered and you were randomly given one of the Pokémon following you, perhaps even teleporting you back to the starter selection cutscene after whatever battle had finished.
5:15 - Mystery Pokémon known as 4, the Vanishing Egg Pokémon, discovered.

The name changes to its current level, and the actual “name” is 0
the Psyduck is a static encounter. Random encounters are disabled in this part of the tutorial.
For those wondering about how long it takes to collect pretty much most of the items possible throughout paldea (softlock areas and unreachable areas not included).
It takes nearly 24 hours (23.15 hours).
Fun fact: You can get a level 100 starter before battling Nemona for the first time, with even a rare candy to spare lol.

I love how the starters still follow you around all this time and you're just ignoring them while they're trying to be their absolute cutest for you and looking at you so full of joyful expectation like: "notice me Senpai!"
sadly there's a flag in place that even blocks the gyms, I've seen someone glitching around while having their Starter yet not doing anything else that was required to progress your game so it's probably the same with the other ones. The game checks to see if the areas are added to the map and if not then you can't progress, that's what I think the flag is for each story

I'm curious what happens when you get your starter after feeding candy to the air.
I am as well like does the egg become a glitched/random pokemon or just go away?
As a I'm programmer, I can tell that these mostly seem like avrage oversights.
Wall clipping and save states are very common ways to glitch out most games. As the game will not actually load in the exact correct state when you start it back up again.
It will load the default state, and use variables to restore what is nessesary as close as possible. In case of certain situations though, they may not be 100% accurate.
Given how easy this scenario is to detect (PokemonList.Count < 1) it's kind of a poor setup in every aspect to ignore this scenario in the code.
What if the designers suddenly receive feedback that players during testing want to roam a bit first? Now they have a lot of work to do to support this!
My guess is, whoever implemented the "rare candy" were simply bored of crashes during development when testing with 0 pokemon.
And implemented a hidden placeholder which would be displayed for the purposes of testing animations and visuals as they need to restart alot and probably didn't have an easy way to put pokemon quickly into a test setup.
I'm surprised that they didn't have a debug common event.
That is what I do in all of my games to swap in every party member I might need, give me a bajillion of every possible item, heal, warp, etc.
That just seems logical to have on hand for quick testing...
Nurse Joy crashes the game after you heal because when you heal she tells you that your first Pokemon in your party specifically+ the rest of your party is healed.
Fun fact: the rotom phone saves you before you even get it
Technically, you have the phone from the start, but you don’t have the Pokédex app yet.
That would be funny if you fell off the cliff before receiving the phone and just died

This seems like it might get us close to an ACE glitch. Clearly that egg represents a spot in memory that we can manipulate at least semi-permanently. It wasn't being reset so perhaps if we figure out what it corresponds to we can manipulate something important.
While technically true, The issue with ACE in Scarlet/Violet is since modern games are written in much higher level languages than assembly, and are much more complex, useful ACE basically never happens in modern games. You need more writeable memory, and a more complex series of instructions than in a game like OoT or SMW.

@@redwaller1 AArch64 is a quite complex instruction set (ironically) compared to for example armeabi on the GBA. You'd need quite a significant amount of writtable AND executable memory pages to do anything meaningful.

I tested how far you can go after getting a starter but before doing the first Nemona tera fight. It took about four hours, but you can make it to every gym town and even the highest peak in the game.
Tips for anyone who wants to do this:
-Buy as many Poké dolls as possible.
-Use the battle teleport mechanic to cross the gap that PaPaSea was trying to cross here 4:23
-Catch some Pokémon under level 20
-Catch the Magicarp in the pond after you teleport past the first gap 4:23
-Use a rare candy to evolve the Magicarp
-You now have a fast lead Pokémon to run from battles with (it won’t obey), saving you dolls.
-Visit every Pokémon center you see to establish fast travel points in case you get stuck.
If I remember correctly, the path to open up the map is basically clockwise. You run along the south cliffs until you get to the edge and drop down. To get to the psychic town, you have to drop down a cliff and then take the rocky road bridge into the cave that gets you to the town. In general, you will find out that several caves and passages become extremely useful if you don’t have a mount. I was able to make a circle from the psychic town, to water/normal/bug towns, to ice/ghost towns, to the electric town, to the grass town, and all the way back to the Pokémon center where you do the tera battle with Nemona. The only place I couldn’t get to on foot was the area with the fighting star base (south east corner of the map).
Oh, and as others have stated, none of the gyms, star bases, or titans activate.
You can also just catch and level a Magikarp - the "won't obey" appears to only trigger for Pokemon caught above the threshold. Raising one above the threshold doesn't seem to cause problems.
Yeah, I sorta did this with a friend because we wanted to stress-test how "open world" this game was. Surprisingly open, though you can't trigger any of the stuff which you would get after opening the school. (This includes your version's ride Pokemon, and the Day/Night cycle is stuck in "daytime".) It is possible to get about 120 Pokemon in the 'Dex before even reaching the school - I think I hit 116 because I couldn't find a Gastly or Surskit.
Of course, the battle-hop can go wrong if there's a Scyther right there after the hop. Those things are aggressive and unless you've already got something pretty buff it can start beating down your team.
@@kereminde True. My main goal was to get to the highest peak on foot, so the Magicarp was only needed since the speed stat would allow me to run away. After a while, I found enough money via item drops to buy more than enough Pokédolls.
The gyarados will obey if you raise its friendship
@@kitty_foreststreamvods4116 I don't *think* that's actually a function of friendship. I'm also not sure I've seen the more powerful uses of friendship 'go off' in the Scarlet/Violet games. (Focus Sash, auto-cure, increased crits, extra evade...)
The gym tests don’t start until Nemona gives you the quest, and the Titans don’t spawn. I used the teleportation glitch and made it to most cities and Titan areas, nothing worked. Funnily enough I exited mezagosa before fighting Nemona

It's weird how the game just crashes when we don't have our pokemon instead of using a placeholder like in the previous games. Not even a 2D or 3D model of a question mark with a circle around it.
The same case happens in Sword and Shield too, weird.
Protected memory is the biggest reason that modern games don't glitch in similar ways to old games. In the old Pokemon games, particularly generation 1, a battle would start and the game goes to put out your first Pokemon. Since there isn't one, it interprets some meaningless garbage in that place in memory as a Pokemon. It follows lookup tables and pointers to sprite and audio data for the Pokemon. Since it's garbage data, you'll likely get garbage addresses for the pointers to stuff. No problem, the game goes to those memory addresses and fetches whatever garbage is there and displays or plays it. The only difference moving up to GBA and DS games is that the devs knew players would try these shenanigans so they made it check for various kinds of invalid Pokemon and show a big ? or "Bad Egg" instead of a Missingno-style mess.
Modern games tend to crash with this kind of glitch. Modern consoles like 3DS and Switch have multitasking OSes to allow background stuff like returning to the home menu or background downloading, and hardware that tells the OS if a program is trying to access memory it doesn't have permission to use (which prevents a game or other program from modifying other programs or the OS). The game tries to load Pokemon data from some garbage memory address, the OS sees that it's trying to do something forbidden, stops it and tells you it crashed.

It’d be a war of attrition by all means, but I wonder what would happen if you managed to get glitch egg buddy to level 100. Would it keep leveling, or would the game just outright crash?
I want to know that as well, but I don't know how I would get that many candies reliably
@@PaPaSea I know some items respawn when the day changes. If you could succeed at saving and restarting the game without it panicking and putting you back at the starting area, you could possibly shift the day on your switch, grab any responding items, and rinse and repeat? Definitely a tedious process though.
New speedrun catagory: get the 0 egg to level 100.

Nurse Joy says "Your (pokemon here) is all healed up!" (paraphrased) so the game crashes at that point because it has no pokemon to reference.
So I don't imagine the gym battles would be workable since I know some of them have dialogue referencing your pokemon.
Specifically, the gym test for the psychic gym would be straight up impossible.
Also, the ice gym would be impossible, since you need the rideable legendary to do the test.
@@Purpleking_Official i dont think we technically know that, since the cortondo gym challenge is possible without using the rideable legendary, so maybe the glaseado gym is the same. plus, i dont believe everyone in this game owns a magical legendary beast to call upon whenever they need help, so there must be some other way for people like nemona to complete the challenge.

yep. it's literally the programming sending out an error, and Nintendo don't want an ugly error screen so just shut down the game whenever there's an error.

When I found this glitch, the saddest thing that triggered me the most was that if you don't pick up the starter Pokemon, then there are no Pokemon in the overworld that you could catch. You also can't ride with Miraidon or Koraidon because you haven't saved and got them yet.
From what I have seen in videos, the tutorial area and cutscenes might be the only things working as intend, as in you can't skip them.
So i played the game using the lock on and R throw method cuz if you are lucky it teleports you up cliffs and such so i used it to get around the map 100% without a ride pokemon, visited all the towns, team star bases and all of that. Team star bases are absolutely empty, and when you ring the bell to start the challenge, it makes the "ding" sound from clicking A, but nothing happens, and similarly, if you try to seek out Titan pokemon or challenge the gyms, the titans aren't there and the gyms will welcome you and nothing else. You can find most of the ruin stakes this way, too, but there are at least 3 for each ruin pokemon that you NEED your ride pokemon to get to. Using the lock on R "glitch" lets you explore a lot, but it does leave the world feeling empty but i also found and caught some terra pokemon, shiny pokemon and was about level 60 before my first day so it can be kind of fun to do things in that way. Plus, when i did start playing the regular way, everything was unlocked to fly to, so I just flew to get all of the paths done.
I started to do the same, but stopped once I hit the psychic gym, choosing instead to run around at the top of the waterfall nearby. I used Floragato to take out the Psyduck for decent XP and I managed to catch a lv39 Dratini that wouldn't listen to me. I got bored around lv24 and finally went to the school. I crushed everything up to the third gym before levels started even getting close to where I was
Imagine they make a Pokemon game where if you manage to leave the starting area without selecting a Pokemon, you get an entirely different game where your character chooses a new career.
Like if you make it to the first shop, you find a "help wanted" sign and you apply for a job as a delivery boy/girl and have to figure out how to get to your destination without using Pokemon.
I got to the bug gym without doing the lighthouse cutscene and it wont let you do the gym. I had my starter and used it to glitch my way back into the cave after getting out of the cave with the legendary. I also went to the flying titan and dark team star base no boulders. cutscenes didn't happened and you can here the button press on the intercom for the gate but nothing happens.
No way in heck I'd have the patience for it, but I wonder what would happen if that egg hit level 100 and got a rare candy. Probably just another crash anyway. Neat vid!

that psyduck by the bridge was a shiny for me! my first shiny like 10 minutes into the game haha

i have never- NEVER found a shiny, legitimately, in a mainline game. Only ever in Pokémon Go, or hacked ones through Wonder Trade.

@@somebakedgood no they arent. there is a reccommended order for in what order the gyms/bases/titans should be challenged, but it is not required. there is no in game "order" for the challenges, they can be done in any order. for example, if you found a way to climb glaseado mountain before challenging anything, you could fight the glaseado gym. if you glitch yourself to the middle of casseroya lake before you unlock swimming, you can challenge titan dondozo. :)
@@staarfall5317 They don't mean the gym order, they mean sequence breaking, stuff like picking the atarters, nemona battle, meeting arven, going to school, etc. The game seemingly checks to make sure you've done everythign you need to. Unlike say BDSP where people could just glitch out of the map, walk to the hall of fame and win.
This really looks like they had NO time to do any development that wouldn't be considered "critical". Pokémon games usually have some sort of error handling in cases such as having no party member, but this game just...doesn't. I'd attribute that to the complete refactoring of the party and battle systems making backporting old code impossible, but who knows, I didn't make this game.
I mean, disabling spawners until you get your first Pokémon sounds like a no brainer but they didn't do it. I seriously doubt they didn't think of it.
The placeholder Egg thing is weird though. I guess they still needed a placeholder because a party can never be empty, but why the hell would it use its level as its name??? Did someone set it up like that because it was required and went "eh no one's ever gonna see this anyway"??
Random spawns are disabled, but not fixed ones.
Arven would probably act normally with phone calls and meeting you during cutscene moments, the titans behaving the way they normally do as well, but the moment the fight starts you’d just crash again.

I’ve been watching enough videos on arbitrary code manipulation to see potential for exploitation when you have that egg appear in your party, we just need to keep experimenting to see how the game reacts to different variables and hopefully the options are limitless
You have no pokemon to protect you so in every battle you just get exterminated
pretty sure Nurse Joy crashes because she normally names your lead Poke when thanking you. i.e "Your Sprigatito and the rest of your team are fully healed"
and that check comes back null, the game crashes
When you glitch out of the first Area after getting your starter but before the battle to enter the city I can confirm that you can do pretty much anything, unlock fly points and such stuff BUT none of the Gyms allow you to do their Test, None of the Giant Pokemon exist in the world (not even the Paradox one) and the Team Star Barrier is not spawned in the overworld bevore the Water Gym Town. (also cant do anything with Team star and have no cutszenes at their bases)
Basically none of the Story stuff works unless you get the missions for them in the City before/when you unlock your Mount
They don't even let you challenge the gyms unless you have gone to school

There is a way to get outside the starting area without a pokémon, on the right of Los Platos there is a wall that you can climb if you dash at the right moment

I know what would happen with Gyms, Team Star, and Titans
Nothing will happen. I used the teleportation exploit when I had a Pokemon but didn't enter the school, traveled to each important location, and they wouldn't start. Titans aren't even visible
I bet the crash after the Pokemon Center cutscene is because Nurse Joy says "There you go, and the rest of your team is all better!", and your lead pokemon is null.
Wow this helped me a lot in my try to get a level 100 team before going with Koraidon in the cave

I think there should be a way to get to East Province Area One (whichever one has the Klawf Titan) and then break the game from there
When you don't know which starter to pick:
This is the only unique glitch ever in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet history ever, other just so funny glitches that will happen randomly, but this one, you can purposely get it if you want to soft lock your game
there is a hill on the right side you can slide up. It gets you access to most of the map without even passing the first bridge. Found this while messing around my first time in the game, yet to go to the school.
The game crashes because the wild pokemons straight up murders you.

How high of a level can the egg get through exp candies or are you able to use join avenue to get a 2nd player in?
Join Avenue didn’t work, and there weren’t many XP candies to find
@@PaPaSea Items respawn in this game, right? That's what I've heard. It probably wouldn't be worth the time, but that would mean you might be able to get an infinite amount?

@@TheRedSmarty I thought it was just the sparkles that respawn, not the pokeball items. If the candies do respawn then you could level up a lot more but I have no idea how long that would take

I think the wild pokemon you saw was a fixed encounter as you can’t encounter any wild pokemon in Cabo Poco and the beach at Nemona’s place despite them being spawns there until you battle the tutorial lechonk. So really should not have even been possible probably. Possibly evident by lack of pokemon seen where you were going as well.

Hi Papa, if you then got your starter after youd explored the map, could you then fly to some of the centres and skip the tedious tutorials?
I wonder what would happen if you received a Mystery Gift Pokémon? You would at least be able to glitch across that cliff if you can send it out to battle. Or if you use a tool to inject a Pokémon into your save game.

You'd still have to go back on the story after this point but you could TECHNICALLY probably accept a gift mon if you can get to it's location.
the game doesnt let you connect online to get the pikachu yet, and the only other gift pokemon is obtainable in the school after you get 5 or so badges

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you could get a pokemon that wasn't your intended starter somehow and see how the game reacts. However the only gift pokemon are the starters, the korai/miraidon, and Galarian Meowth from the language teacher after completing his questline. none of which seem possible
I'm pretty sure a twitch streamer/youtuber called SmallAnt modded his game to turn the starter into a wooper, but played everything else normally. The pokedex entry for the starter pokemon displayed the pokemon it was changed into, but otherwise there was nothing particularly strange about his game from that change.

The trick would be to get some Pokemon without a starter. Then see what happens
I mean, without a ride pokemon and before getting to school, I was able to make my way counterclockwise through almost the whole map. No titans existed in the 3 areas I checked. The Bomberdier rocks weren't there either 🤷♀️ I also got 2 shinies! It was honestly pretty great. No ability to picnic, though, which sucked.

@PaPaSea with the starter, unfortunately. I was too impatient for the sans starter glitch, but it was fun to see how far you can get without schooling :) I'm still trying to see how high up you can go without a ride pokemon

Im shocked they don't have a proper error handler for battles without pokemon. I'd expect the game to simply abort the battle. Not crash the game lol.
