I've done it. I didn't think it was too bad to be honest, and I'm a terrible climber. I was probably riding 8 to 10km/h? Within my comfort zone. Obviously if you are racing, doing 27km/h average and riding it three times in a row it is much harder. Willunga is a lovely area.
So good to see Richie again! How someone so laid back managed to live (successfully) among the hype and mania of the pro peloton is beyond me. What a guy. Thanks for this one, Alex and GCN!
@@gcn I'm sure lots of us would enjoy a bit more Richie, if he's up for it. He seems (understandably) glad to be away from the hype of pro cycling, but because he still loves riding and clearly got on well with Alex, I bet he'd be interested in future collabs ✌️
Listening to Ritchie Porte in the video and to Robbie McEwan, Anna Meares, and Peta Mullins commentating (with the amazing Phil Liggett) on this year's TDU (and having spent time in Adelaide/Campbelltown for half a summer in the 1980s), Australians have got to be some of the nicest, laid back people in the world. Adelaide is a place I definitely want to return to.
This road was an ancient Aboriginal track for crossing the Peninsula - they guided white settlers across it in early 1837 and it became the road from Adelaide to Victor Harbour until the late 1970s.
Ritchie is just a great guy! I’m surprised at how relaxed and generally easy going he is. And of course, it’s always great to hear from the Jensie! #class
Thanks for the upload, Richie is da man! I remember waiting in a cafe line at the TDU way back in 2011, and there was RP in front of me in his Saxobank Sungard kit. We had a layed back chat, and managed to get a photo of him and Tiffany Cromwell. Silly me didn’t get a photo of him and me as I had my photographer hat on that day!
Ritchie Porte is my all time ⏲️ Favourite Australian Climber . ❤ him out of the Saddle. Alberto Contador said that if was going 2 Build a Pro Team around him ... Ritchie Porte would be his 1st choice . This was in an interview either just B4 or just after Alberto retired 😅
Great video! Loved hearing how humble he is, and how he differentiates cycling from riding his bike. On a separate note: it’s making me anxious seeing Alex sit on that Orbea top tube. I’m sure it is plenty strong, but it’s so thin
Just back in the UK after spending 4 weeks in Adelaide. My wife and I actually rode Willunga Hill and as well as other areas of the Adelaide Hills including Norton Summit and I’ve got to say it was an amazing experience Adelaide is definitely a place to go cycling 🙌🇦🇺
6:47.3 for Richie in the TDU 2024 Willunga Hill Time Trial ! Still all class. My first trip to TDU this year. Total blast. Lovely community, including various group rides every day. Almost melted. Will be back.
Done it a couple of times on Zwift climb portal, it's easier than most of the climbs where I live, but can't imagine racing up it . 20 mins today as a zone 2 ride.
Stayed in Geelong about 10 years ago and loved Adelaide. Hired some bikes and cycled the coastal paths and the River path into the city centre. Didn't get to Willunga Hill though. Adelaide was a favourite on our trip to Oz.
1:53 even as an amateur i can relate to him so much here. I like cycling when i'm going at a low intensity, but hate it once you gotta start doing vo2/zone 2 training.
We need this for La Redoute/Mur van Huy with Valverde, Cauberg with Gilbert and Mur van Geraardsbergen with Boonen/Cancellara. And there are plenty of other great climbs that match with cyclists.
He's being modest as he's swimming a lot right now. I've seen Richie go up Willunga a couple of times along with sagan and Dowsett last time. Great atmosphere back then and the biggest turnout I've seen.
There's a lot of hype of just how 'difficult' Willunga is. This is my local ride and even I, as an extremely average 39 year old, could climb it 5 times in one day. The fact that Richie Porte has the KOM at 6 minutes will tell you that it's not really that long, steep or difficult. This is not taking away from his KOM but compared to so many other climbs in the world Willunga just ain't that hard. It does however make good headlines to non-cyclists who see it as the pinnacle of cycling achievement. Great video though. :)
There are a lot of climbs that aren't very difficult on paper, but they get a lot of hype because they make the difference between winning and losing a major race.
Interesting bike sizing choice for Richie. I think that, like me, he is inbetween bike sizes and is at the top end of a small bike, or the bottom end of the next size up. He's chosen the smaller bike, like I did. Even tho it looks a bit weird , it feels the right choice for me. And his palmares bears out that it was the right choice for him. Others may disagree.
I was in between 2 frame sizes, and I picked the larger of the two. Eventually I felt like I was too stretched out, and a few years later I bought a similar model in the smaller size. It immediately felt better! If I ever have that decision again, I will choose the smaller size. It's easier to make the bike fit "bigger" with a longer stem or even seatpost if needed. If the frame is too big, you're more limited in trying to downsize the fit, if that makes sense.
When you are in Aus why oh why do you not interview Remo and Sal Sansonetti, who really started the golden era of Aus cycling. Just ask Danny Clark, Phil Anderson, Clyde Sefton, Gary Sutton about the dominance of the Twins. maybe go for a ride on the "Whittlesea Epress" up the famed Kinglake mountain!
What can be the difference in weight between these 2 bike sizes ? Alex’s bike looks a lot bigger , and I started to wonder what numbers we talking , like 300 g or 700, or being different shape contributes more than being different size ?
Have you ever ridden up Old Willunga Hill? 🦘
Yep and it’s tough
Yes, virtual, Zwift Climb Portal 😂

Yeah today and a lot slower than you guys.
GCN is greatly improved without GCN plus. Everything was too long winded. It is getting good again
So good to see Richie again! How someone so laid back managed to live (successfully) among the hype and mania of the pro peloton is beyond me. What a guy. Thanks for this one, Alex and GCN!

Glad Richie is enjoying retirement. A true legend and super domestique of the peloton. Thoroughly deserved.
We need more Jens Voigt on GCN 🙏🤗

You ruined it by spelling "Harbor" incorrectly

Alex, great interview with Richie. Super relaxed feel to the chat. You are rocking this show.
Alex looks like Conor in size right next to Richie. 😂
What cool cats you both are! Big fun and sincere humility!... so fun. Thanks!
Thanks Steve! We loved fliming with Richie too 🙌
Brilliant loved that and a brilliant cameo from Jens 👌

Well spotted
Yup sure was & I let her know of it and she replied ❤😊
oohh!! Adelaide = Barossa Valley wine tasting 😋sounds like a mission for your secret hill climbing agent Andrew Feather to capture the KOM !!
Feather vs Porte ... now that we want to see 👀

You've got to keep it fun! This is the most important thing🙌
Good on Ritchie for steering you wrong always the pro!
Wow…Richie super cool, like a Jens Voigt cameo…epic!
I would not be able to talk along easily at 300W, that‘s for sure. Alex seems fit as a fiddle at the moment. What about a race GCN vs. GCN Tech?
Richie Porte legend! Genuine!

Warm an blazing UV for the riders today.

What a nice bloke
I friend of mine rode up Willunga Hill in the 1980’s with a slight tailwind. This meant he had no apparent breeze and overheated himself going up.
blimey, were they ok?

Loved that video, but how tiny is Richie Porte, or how insanely tall is Alex? There was a massive height disparity between them
he's about 172cm tall.....same as me ;)
Anyone remember Taylor Phinney? :(
Would have liked to have seen Ollie do this vid
Alex looks like the size of Connor riding next to Richie
Oscar Onley was 1 second short of getting the kom :0
think its worth noting- what was the temperature? first day of womens was close to 40C!
What a cool guy
Which one 😉 😂
Obviously Alex is cool : )
But Richie is such a chill guy
What bike he used when he took the KOM?
What crank length is Riche riding?
It's always nice to see Katie K (7:09), but do you guys think you should sneak her in like that? But I'm not complaining, eh.
Racing a pro, you'd best be ready for All the Tricks.
How tall is Alex?
Who was the guy in the white ute? Could he have given the guys more room?
Standard experience cycling in Australia... 😬
i didn't realized Alex that huge 😂
Anna meares is cool bring back anna 😎

7:18 is that Katie Kookaburra?
What a personality 😂
Would like to have seen a comparison between real ride and zwift climb portal times.
He wants $3 because you need both gold coins now for a bunnings snag, dang inflation
What’s the KOM time for Willunga whilst carrying on an interview??
Where is Matt Holmes now?
He retired at the end of 2022
Yeah today and a lot slower than you guys.

What's wrong with public school snobby.
GCN should challenge motorcycles with the same price as those road bikes and see who's fast.
Fake out was kinda mean 😊
Wafinyi whatsup?
Not surprised that RP doesn't miss racing. So many crashes.
How on earth can you do a climb in a more than decent tempo and talk at the same time? The answer is: No you can't. So what was it?
Probably e-bikes 🤔
It’s called superior fitness to us mortals
