  • In this video, I will explain the steps you need to take to become an orthodontist including my personal journey.
    The first step is to graduate high school and start your undergraduate education. Undergrad is typically completed in 4 years, but some students finish in less or more time. If you want to start dental school directly after undergrad, you apply to dental school during your third year of undergrad (if you are completing undergrad in 4 years).
    Once you graduate from undergrad you will start dental school, which is another 4 year program. During your third year of dental school you will apply to orthodontic residency programs, which are an additional 2-3 years dependent on where you attend.
    After you graduate from your residency program you are officially an orthodontist! In summary, the total time after high school is 10-11 years to become an orthodontist.
    If you have any questions about the process or any other questions put them in the comments below!

    You explained this so well and in such a short time than other videos that say way too much but so little at the same time! I'm a Junior in Highschool and I've been curious about being an orthodontist since I was young too, so this really helped to understand what I need to do and explain it to my parents in simpler way. Your videos are really helping people understand these things!🙏

She then told us what would be the process to make this dream come true. Thanks to your video, we now know what it takes!!! Thank you Dr. Ariel for this awesome video ! 👍🏼

    Can you please provide a rundown of what you did in dental school to be a competitive applicant? There’s very minimal information online on what the expectations are. The only thing people state is you need to be top 10, but is that the case?

    im so glad to have found a black woman, like myself, who has become an orthodontist. i'm struggling to find what i should major in for undergrad and if i worry that if i don't do well on the DAT my plans would be crushed. i'm not good in chemistry or bio but i would do them to become and orthodontist since i like the profession. i'm so scared that i might not get into dental school since i heard the DAT is really hard. How was the DAT for you and what did you do to prepare?

    • @drarielmitch
      @drarielmitch  2 года назад +2

      Hi Kyla! Make sure you prep well for the DAT so that you can do your best. I mainly used the Kaplan DAT prep book. RUclips also has really helpful organic chemistry videos specifically for the DAT that I found really helpful. You’ve got this!

    Can u please make a video on how to get ready to be an orthodontist in highschool???? What kind of things should I do in highschool to get better chances of going to college, dental school, ortho residency, etc.????? Should I be taking all honors classes and all AP classes? What classes should I take? What about electives? What grades do I need? Sorry I’m almost a freshman and so I’m really stressed but I really wanna reach for my goals!!! ❤❤❤❤

    • @jayporch8089
      @jayporch8089 Год назад

      Surround yourself with a lot of science classes and anatomy if they offer that. Specific ones I’d say would be biology, and chemistry. Both will help you. Electives really are up to you and should be your own personal choices because most dental schools want to see what u like to do not just what there admission page says. And volunteer wherever you can! At a local dentist office or orthodontist office would be a good place but you have to be careful with HIPPA laws, but some orthodontists will work with you. 😊

    Hi! I’m interested in becoming a orthodontist. I was wondering which is more beneficial to start out, with an AA (general studies) or AS dental hygiene? If I were to choose an AS I was wondering if I could further my education to be an orthodontist. I’m sort of confused because my counselors tell me one thing and then other teachers tell me another.

    I hope you can answer this question for me please 🙏🏾 I am currently in my first year in college, I’m currently working on my AA degree and transfer to get my bachelors degree for orthodontist but I’ve been thinking about switching to an AS degree so I can start working as a dental hygienist upon graduation but I wanted to know if I switch to the the as if I can still get my bachelors degree and still become an orthodontist later on??? I’ve spoke with advisors at my college but i was really confused by the answers they gave me. So my question is can I still go for a bachelors to become an orthodontist after completing my Associate in science in dental hygiene ???

I mean like do you have to do undergrad then dental school or you don’t have to do undergrad and just go into dental school. Let me know. Also thank you for a great video. Please let me know when you get the time. -Sami

    I have a question about the orthodontist license. Do I need to complete 2-3 years of the residency program to perform orthodontics in the office? Can I start working as a general dentist and get an education about orthodontics through seminars?

    • @michaellam161
      @michaellam161 Год назад

      This is a pretty broad question, but you can technically utilize orthodontic modalities more commonly, clear aligners and less commonly, fixed braces with continuing education - in your general practice. You do not technically need a residency to do so.

    • @michaellam161
      @michaellam161 Год назад

      Not necessarily. Having a well rounded CV is pretty important. I was in the top 10% of my class, but I have heard of people getting in with a much lower ranking. Things like GPR, work experience and solid reference letters can give ya a solid boost.

    Do you need to have a good gpa and good sat score in high school for all of this? I’m really worried about that and I’m worried I’m not smart enough for dental school and especially since it’s so competitive. I do have higher than average grades and some test scores but definitely not elite. Can anyone technically make it into dental school? Or anyone close to the gpa requirement and dat requirement?

      Nope! You just need your bachelor’s degree to get in to most dental schools. You’ll get your doctorate from dental school and your master’s from most orthodontic residency programs (but not all of them)

      Yes, some residency programs don’t mind if you work while you’re in residency as a general dentist. This is referred to as “moonlighting”.
