I'm ready to take the plunge and hope I can get at least half the results you get! Beers!
thanks for the post Kraftie. Apparently clear coat and alcohol don't mix. They cause dry spots! I am painting my 73 std beetle in Porsche livery blue and orange. I have applied Valspar interclear over my base coats. I'm not finished the base coating yet. Because the shop is cold, small and poorly lighted and I only have 2 days per work on the car I am painting it in sections. After I get all the 2 tone base/interclear done I have to sand it down and do the GULF painted logos all over it. Great tip on the 600 grit, I'll drink to that...but not while I'm sprayin clear.
Jon Kosmoski (aka god) says 400 (Dry) prior to basecoat. Is it universally agreed that wet sanding is at least one grit coarser than dry sanding. Therefore 600 wet is the coarsest you can go with wet sanding. I agree with Jon that the base will start to fill the 400 dry scratch and that the clear will completely eliminate them. For a flowcoat 500-600 dry is better as you've got less additional film build coming. The 3M 260L finishing film with an interface pad is the way to go. One fifth the time of wet sanding and a better scratch pattern to boot.
Subbed, you explain things really well. Do you have to clean it that carefully when going from base to clear? As a beginner, I struggle a lot setting up the gun. Is all about surface reflexion, is u apply metallics on 320 and the result is not good is because is not well sanded..
Good sanding work is all about working up through the grits. Each grit cuts at a certain rate, and if you start off too fine, you'll just be wearing paper out and not removing enough material.

You seem to be understanding some of the problems you have with the finish, dry etc, but I’m uncomfortable with your fixing. 600 wet even on silver may be quick to knock down but you will see the scratches under the next clearcoat and no amount of buffing will give you clarity down to the colour as the scratches are trapped between coats. Minimum 800 grit on light colours and 1500 on dark colours is best to go for if you want to see thru the clear to the colour best.
In this instance when the car is still taped up I'll do a wet coat evertime. I dont really care for buffing and doing a whole car would have taken more time i think. This was a bit excessive to do this for just a lil orange peel but I wanted to make a click baity title too.

Dude..
Shup
I cant even watch this
But your veiw still counts, thank you.
He got a view and comment out of you. He dont care.
just take the time and use 1000 and have a nice job.
what act. you using with the usc.. the 42 or 43.. I spayed that shit for a yr, now we are back to nason 497.. nice job on the fix
I'm using the USC 10 with a 14 (slow) activator. I really like USC 40 but 10 is cheaper. Nason is great to use, that's my go to for "cheap" got clear.
@@KarKraftsman I like the Nason to.. I'm in NJ. And the last month I've been getting a lot of dieback and solvent pops I just change the filters in the booth it's a down draft probably about 20 years old. I'm using the ws400.to clear..its just crazy how it just started happening.. Any thoughts.. I've been painting for about 35yrs.. We have spies here. 295 solvent based.
@@WOLF-lz6zc do you add an accelerator or fisheye eliminator? Most of the jobs I use USC on are auction jobs I'll never see again so I'm not sure of USCs longevity.
I'm obsessive about fisheye and wash panels 2 or 3 times before applying any paints or glue.
If you're using a strong wax and grease remover after the base coat that could be it, I try not to use any solvents after I base.
Let me know how it goes tho
@@KarKraftsman no additives Kar..just wash everything with 3901s prep solv. Tach and go. I'm seeing alot of it could be air flow... The USC isn't bad..but there's no uv protection.. At least with the 40
@@WOLF-lz6zc spraying waterbase or solvent?
