For anyone thinking about it: Please don't move to Portugal for tax or money reasons. Please move there for the culture, food, people, and nature. I enjoyed my time there so much not because it was "affordable" for a US person, but because everything was truly excellent.
I live in Australia and can safely say that Portugal is no longer "affordable", rent is average 1.3k euros a month on the major cities and the groceries are more expensive than here in Australia. I'm considering moving there for the culture and vibe, not for the "affordability"
@@jjkanal640 you still have a fairly good free health care service and education too. Yes the rents were up but thats not happening only in Portugal. I doubt very much about what you saying about groceries. Or restaurants or hotel stays. Just google and do some research about cost of life between those two countries
I am considering moving away from my home. I didn’t want to but the situation is bringing about anxiety and uncertainty - it is not conducive to living our best remaining life. From that starting point, I don’t want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire - so research. But even then, even if economically helpful, is it a good fit? So - I’m visiting rather than plunge in site unseen. But affordability has to be factored in. The fit has to accommodate more than myself. There are always cheaper places - but the fit is a combination. Hospitable? Food I can enjoy? Reasonable housing and technology? Healthcare? Safety? I am not young enough to move anyplace just for a vibe - and I agree - affordability is not the only reason.
We immigrated to Oeiras, Portugal in June 2024 on a D7. Your content was incredibly helpful. It's great to see you are still out here helping people. Thanks for all that you do
One of my best friends was American from Alabama Decatur .She was amazing 🤩 She died 15 years ago but still have her in my heart until I die. She was unique, she was a shining star ⭐️ 💝
I actually need some help. Do you know enough about the new NHR, the Fiscal Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI) Program? I am finishing up my degree in Comp Sci this year and I want to find a remote job so I can move to Portugal from the states, I just don’t know if I will be able to afford to live in Portugal if I am taxed on half of my income. I don’t mind being taxed as long as I can afford to live, but I don’t understand how any of this works.
So glad to see you back! I just obtained my NIF and am in the process of establishing my Portuguese bank account. For all of the great information--Obrigada!
I feel like immigration into Portugal is going to change dramatically. The Chega government is gaining popularity everyday there and has similar views on immigration like Italy, the USA, now Canada and others. I like your comments on integration to culture and not bringing what you left behind with you. It certainly helps locals be less resistant and more welcoming to newcomers.
As it should. We are 10M people. Not a big country like the others you mentioned. We dont act now, the whole country will be unrecognizable in 10, 20 years. Besides, the struggles with immigration is making people more aware of how the EU plans to make Portugal reliant on tourism is NOT good for the country. We need to be more selfreliant economically and that isnt going to come about my making policies that only focus on making the country attractive to foreigners and shutdown Portugals ability to develop its industries.
I really hope that chega Will win the next elections, because this imigration is unacceaptable to Portugal. We can’t take more imigrants. Enough is enough!
I have been lurking here on your channel for awhile. One day I will retire and expat to Portugal. One question I have is about weather, more specifically, storms and disasters. Does Portugal have a "fire season" and if so where, and how bad does it get?
Thanks Man, great vid. Do you have any rec's for a Tax Advisor to ask specific questions about tax implications under the D7 coming from the USA? Mainly disability income (non-taxed in the US and Social Security income) woot!
I consulted with Zeev from Fresh Portugal, and he was great. Answered my questions, explained things clearly, and eased my tax stress. My personal tax situation is going to be NOTHING like I thought it was going to be. It’s going to be MUCH better than thought (and I don’t qualify for the NHR)!
Great insight into Portugal. Been there once. Returning in May. Want to stay at an Airbnb for a month. Where in the country do I go? I will keep watching you, hoping to get insight into the region best suited for me. I'm a "baby boomer groupie" of yours, Dave!😂
Thanks for the video. For the D7 Visa, how true is it to have a bank account in Portugal before moving there and how much is the minimum amount required?
Olá! We are arriving in Lisbon on December 14/15. Which hotel do you recommend? We will travel to see a friend in Faro (also need a hotel or Airbnb) for a week, then onto La Herradura until Jan 1. Do you have any recommendations? Obrigado! Dean and Cindy
Great analysis, thank you! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
So if you’re poor and don’t have a degree or anything, it’s pretty much off the table for you, right? I just wanna be realistic before I keep dreaming. I own a house I could sell for moving/settling in expenses, I am just not sure if I could qualify for any of the VISAs, as I’m just a paraprofessional and my wife is a CNA.
@daveinportugal Do you or anyone else offer a "Move to Portugal" master class? I'm looking for information on all the requirements, including costs, taxes, and cultural considerations. I appreciate the video, but I need more detailed guidance to plan my and my husband's move after retirement. Thank you!
Whist I don’t have anything against influx of immigrants (including the so-called expats), I would urge our Portuguese government to step up the infrastructure to match. That is manage the influx matching with the build/improve the infrastructure. And should be done not only in coastal places and in cities, but also in rural areas as well Because some of incoming immigrants from rich countries are actually going rural areas (buying small farms). If government fails driving build/improve the infrastructure (as we’re seeing on healthcare), the move out will be sudden and disastrous for Portugal (Portugal’s mark). Well, posting here in “Dave em Portugal” hopping someone from government do read here 🤔 🤣🤣
I wish the government would implement a golden visa based on rehabilitating homes in disrepair. There are so many homes that need to be brought back to habitability! It would be a win-win!
@@MirandaHorger Golden Visa has a bad rap here, that meant those who had the money and including rich Chinese and rich Russians could get a foothold in Europe. Not that I intend to single out Chinese and Russians, BUT, when you see the influence of Russians oligarchs on Brexit, one DO has to take notice. Also on the “blank check” that is Golden Visas, and reinforcing I’m not intend on singling out Chinese and Russians, one has to be aware on mal-intention of those like Steve Bannon and Mike Pompeo towards Europe and towards EU. Those in USA should look for a Huge dollar surge either from magic printer or by foreign money pouring in, and if you’re not a NY prosecutor, one of girls suing him, or you’re not Anthony Fauci or in his team, you’ll be fine and in a potential of earning good dollars.

What about if you have a mother or grandmother that was born in Portugal. How hard is that?
It's probably one of the easiest ways. Just search for Portuguese Citizenship by Descent.
