As the son of wonderful Portuguese born mother and French born father. Portugal is my heart ❤️ I am a Portuguese citizen, fluent in Portuguese,Spanish, French and Italian. Spent my summers throughout these 4 countries but Portugal is everything to me. The culture, history, music, food , geographical beauty is beyond measure. I will be spending 10 days in August looking for the perfect town to buy second home. My choices on this yearly 10 day trip are Santarém, Alcobaça, Mafra and Évora. Maybe I’ll run into you Dave!!!
You are blessed to have direct European ancestry. My Mum is from England (but she loved France) and Dad’s Mum was first generation Canadian-German… one generation too far back for me to claim German ancestry and my paternal grandfather’s has Irish ancestry but a few generations back… again too far I’m afraid. Portugal my favourite place in the world too!
I live in the Santarém area. Way too hot, dusty and full of pollens, plus I would say it's a region that the government neglects. Hard to find quality professionals and services. Suggest Alcobaça and Mafra. Évora is amazing but also quite hot. Hope you find your dream home.

@ganeshr4371 you might want to do your own research on safety and not just trust youtube comments, also can vary in how dangerous whether you are woman, man, solo, partner
Just back from an 8 night trip to Portugal, 5 nights in Lisbon and 3 in Porto (not too different from this itinerary!). I absolutely loved exploring both cities as well as the daytrip I took from Lisbon to Sintra/Cabo de Roca. I travelled solo and stayed in hostels in both cities and would like to add that Portugal is very doable on a budget. It's also very welcoming for solo travellers with extremely friendly people.
Nice detailed video, Dave!! We Loved our 11day trip to Portugal in April! We flew from US to Lisbon, a quick 3-stop Metro ride to Oriente Station & took a beautiful 3hr train trip S to Albufeira for 4full days. We did not rent a car & used the Bolt app for car service if we didn't walk. Checked into our Apt by 12noon near old town; settled in, got groceries & took a fun & informational local Tuk Tuk evening tour to see the area & a beautiful coastal sunset! Took 2 days for Dreamwave tours: caves & dolphins, and parasailing. Loved our time at the marina & had a few nice lunches there! Took a Bolt to Caviero & spent a lovely day wandering back towards Albufeira on the boardwalk & trails, exploring caves/coves with a lite coastal lunch at Boneca & fruity icecream. We took a bolt back to our apt. We really enjoyed old town Albufeira & all the shops near the beaches. We took a bus to Lisbon & another bus to Obidos. Stayed the night in Obidos Castle & loved wandering the village for a dinner stop after the tourists left. Took a bus to our Lisbon Apt. Took the ferry across to the Cristo Rei Statue: beautiful views of Lisbon! We had 2 amazing day trips: Sintra- Regaleira & Pena Palaces, including a costal lunch near Praia Grande & visit to Cabo da Roca. Also a day trip to historic, beautiful Tomar- Both Recommend! And our final, full day was with the amazing Super Mario (we found from Dave's channel) learning about the history of Lisboa with many beautiful stops & views! Amazing 11days! We are ready to go back & see the North & central, plus looking at options for retirement!
Amazing and fun adventure of Portugal ! You're blessed and thank you for such detailed information ! I will definately try to find those destinations when I travel there 2025 .

Tips on social etiquette in Portugal: - Don’t litter. Really, it’s a big faux pas here. - Greet everyone, always. Even if there are 16 fellow hikers on the narrow path, give each one some eye contact and a brief hello. - If you are invited to a party, be sure to leave before midnight so the host has some time to clean up. - Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that. - Don't use public speakers or speak loudly on public transport. It is considered bad manners. Portuguese People value individual silence. - On the escalator, people try to line up for those who don't have an urgent need to get on and leave space for those who need to get on urgently. - Avoid asking about a person’s age, family, marital status, religion, ethnicity, or topics like Portugal’s role in the Portuguese Colonial Empire
" *avoid asking about a person’s age, family, marital status, religion, or topics like Portugal’s role in the Portuguese Colonial Empire* " And how much money we earn
These are common universal etiquette rules, not just in Portugal...you also forgot to mention "Do not put your feet up with shoes on seats while riding public transportations. This is disrespectful and unhygienic."
"Saudade, a word that cannot be precisely defined in English..." Suggestion: check out the definition for the (very archaic) English word "desiderium" - feel a keen desire for (something lacking) / an ardent desire or longing, especially : a feeling of loss or grief for something lost - There you have it, that's exactly the meaning of "saudade".
I would argue that saudade isn't just "an ardent desire or longing." It is used describe feelings of nostalgia for something with positive associations as well. Almost a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy.
Dave is right. We use this term to describe more than just a longing. Sometimes it is a simple I miss you, tenho saudades de ti, or soldiers that have been to war feeling nostalgia for a terrible situation but remembering the joyful memories with their comrades. The same word can express a different range of emotions
I am going to 🇵🇹 in September. My friend will be travelling with me. We will spend two days on our own before we join the tour group. So I am reading upon cuisine, history, and learning a few phrases in Portuguese. Will even look up what not to do so that I don’t offend the locals. So great to travel abroad again!

In Portugal, being honest and polite is genuinely important to them. Portuguese people love being polite!! How I can say, you will discover the significance of multiculturalism and diversity in Portugal. You will discover: - Portugal is a democratic society in which everyone is expected to contribute to public life. - Portugal is a pluralistic society that respects the diversity of various cultures from within a democratic framework. - Religious freedom is a constitutionally guaranteed right and most Portuguese people practice Christianity. - Portugal claims to value gender equality. - Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that. - Portuguese people tend to be polite, reserved, direct, and a little guarded at first. - Portuguese people are more reserved, you might not get to know the intimate details of a person’s life very quickly. - Portuguese people love small formal talk and probably invite you for a coffee. - Portugal is very Progressive and Developed country - Portugal is a very safe place.
thank you! I'm always worried about the safety thing, and i'm guessing there are places better to avoid, like in every city. Do you know Lisbon? If you do not mind the question, are there any particular places to avoid? cheers

I spent 2 weeks in Portugal, maybe 2 years ago. My only reservations at all were for the first couple of nights in Lisbon. Plan was to take a train to Porto, but that got messed up, couldn't get a decent ticket/time, so rented a car. Wow, saw so much more than originally planned, it was sooo cool. Still missed a lot (Like Duoro river, and Braga), but saw so many other small towns i would have missed if we'd taken the train as planned. And, yes, we made it to the Algarva too. Great vid, keep them coming. Some guy called Steve in Texas.

Thanks for watching! In February, Portugal might be a bit quieter, but don't worry, it's not like everything disappears like a magic trick! Some places might have reduced hours or be closed for a short siesta, but you'll still find plenty of delicious pastéis de nata and warm smiles everywhere you go. Have a fantastic trip! 😄
Hi Dave, can you do a Video on getting around Portugal? What’s the best way to rent a car? Lisbon or at the airport? Any tips etc? Thanks, we’re heading there in August

Thanks to your videos, my March trip to Lisboa (the views and photos I got from Castelo de São Jorge, magnificient), Sintra (the two castles and the Initiation Well were stunning!), and the Açores (OMG volcanic thermal baths at Poça da Dona Beija in Furnas, the best! Went every night!) were fantastic! I seriously enjoyed it! Guerin car rentals were nice and easy. They checked the scratch sizes on the car more than they do here in the States, LOL! So much fun! Great video Dave… but I can’t even imagine spending 7-10 days… it’s just not enough time! If I could do 6 months in a row I think that would be OK… for now 3 has to do.
@@SERGIO-cr6uy I thought you were Portuguese Thank you for the nice comment... I am working to learn Portuguese... the written language is MUCH easier for me than spoken (my audio memory is not good). Je pensais que vous étiez portugais ! Being from Canada, my French is not too bad. We didn't learn enough though, when I was in school. They concentrated on conjugating verbs instead of conversational French. The D7 visa used to be available for people who have passive income (pensions for example) OR anyone bringing 'earned' income from another country (self-employed). The monthly income requirement for a D7 is the minimum of what the minimum Portuguese salary is... (right now that's around €825 a month). They split the visa and now anyone bringing an 'earned' income in to the country has to qualify for a D8. That income requirement is FOUR (4X) times the monthly Portuguese income - so about $4,887 CAD. That is a lot more money. C'est en gros comme ça que ça marche maintenant... Je ne suis pas à la retraite, donc l'occasion s'est présentée.
hi Dave, brilliant video!! Thank you for all the tips! may I plz ask will you recommended anyone to hire a car to travel most of the places you mentioned in the video..? coz I checked the distance from each places to my hotel, some 25 mins by car, 35 mins by walk...do you think is good idea..? Am hoping to go around xmas time this month.. ;) many thanks!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Hi dave Im planning a trip arpund 10 days with my mom like a quiet travel.. and maybe arriving lisbone and leaving from porto. Do you have any video like this please
Dave I'm going to Porto in eight days time for two weeks I can't wait. Im staying in Cedofeita. It will be my fourteenth visit I think. I've been to Lisbon to and I really liked it but Porto is in my heart. Unfortunately I'm British so I can't do the tour.
Hi Dave, can you give us an update on the situation of buying property in Portugal since the last changes, can Americans still buy a small piece of land which is what I want to do.
Hi Dave When talking about Sintra i would like to had the Palácio of Monserrate and the Chalet of Condessa D'Ela on the Palacio da Pena gardens. Dunno if you already visited, but i recomend i would like to recomend a few places you can visit : - The city Elvas, theres a big military museum and a famous old fort, Forte da Graça. Its know has the fortaleza city. - Viana do Castelo, the huge church on the hill with a very scenic view, Igreja Santa Luzia, and hospital boat called Gil Eanes, and the windmills of Montedor Also keep an eye on the train company, CP - Comboios de Portugal, cause in the summer there is a steam historical train that shuffles between Régua and Tua, showing the beautifull Douro River while riding an historical train. And the three Saints Seasons is upon us... Santo António in Lisbon, São João in Porto and São Pedro in Povoa do Varzim.
We have to admit we are slow 🦥 in Portugal, not that that's a bad thing, 400 years to discover truffles in our territory, after every country in Europe discovered theirs, 50 years to decide the new aeroporto whereabouts...I can give more examples, but I would be here a eternity 😂

Hello Dave,
I am Portuguese but I lived in UK for 11 years. I recently moved to the interior of Portugal, it is beautiful here. You have no idea how you influenced me to return and live here. There is a good video on an ancient village called Piodão.
Thank you for your truthful videos and how great you speak about Portugal!
Já fazes parte da casa! Continuação de boa vida e muita saúde!
Portugal, Spain, Italy...which one out of these are the best countries to visit for 10-15 days ? I don't like crime or pickpocket area. Please confirm and advise on europe travel ?
I spent 2 weeks in Portugal, maybe 2 years ago. My only reservations at all were for the first couple of nights in Lisbon. Plan was to take a train to Porto, but that got messed up, couldn't get a decent ticket/time, so rented a car. Wow, saw so much more than originally planned, it was sooo cool. Still missed a lot (Like Duoro river, and Braga), but saw so many other small towns i would have missed if we'd taken the train as planned. And, yes, we made it to the Algarva too. Great vid, keep them coming. Some guy called Steve in Texas.

Great video, we plan on visiting for the first time in February. Is everything open during this off season?
Thanks for watching! In February, Portugal might be a bit quieter, but don't worry, it's not like everything disappears like a magic trick! Some places might have reduced hours or be closed for a short siesta, but you'll still find plenty of delicious pastéis de nata and warm smiles everywhere you go. Have a fantastic trip! 😄
@AmandaCrane-g1s great thank you
Hi Dave, can you do a Video on getting around Portugal? What’s the best way to rent a car? Lisbon or at the airport? Any tips etc? Thanks, we’re heading there in August
Portugal itself could be defined as a society where all people are equal and where they share some fundamental values based upon freedom and that all Portuguese could identify with the values of liberty and equality.

Francesinha Do Bairro in Lisboa has a vegetarian francesinha option. I’m pescatarian so it was my only choice. It was amazing! My friends all loved their meaty versions. I will definitely be stopping there at least once on every Lisboa visit.
A vegetarian francesinha is not a francesinha... It's some veggie sandwich covered in cheese with francesinha sauce.
@@kikoempis Thanks for the info. I’ll call the restaurant and let them know they are misleading the public. It might be grounds for a lawsuit.
@@joeblow812 It should be! xD

Just returned yesterday. Spent 11 days in Portugal with a lot of your info. It was fantastic. I did use a car because I wanted to visit some remote places. Thanks Dave

Another awesome an informative video Dave thank you been following you since you started in Portugal I would say. Bought a house between Caxarias and Seica and love it
I watched a number of your videos in preparation for a trip to Lisbon and The Algarve. All the info was so helpful. And thanks for the recommendation about trying Super Mario the Tuk Tuk Driver- we had a great tour with him.
Keep those videos coming!
I love your video Going to visit Portugal in 2025. 😍
Thank you 🙏🏻

Inspiring Dave, I would love to film a trip like this. I see the tour is sold out now. I just saw this video so...
O melhor de Portugal❤
I wanted to ask, how reliable is uber and bolt in portugal?
Dave have you been to the Açores? I'm from Furnas São Miguel❤
Very good ❤
Why are you wearing a shirt in the pool
Maybe so that he can connect the microphone 🎤
It's called being respectful. Try it sometime
Obrigado!
Je ne suis pas à la retraite, donc l'occasion s'est présentée.
as i live and work in Lisboa, i am a bit fed up, so i do prefer the interior, like Serra da Estrela, Gerês, Coimbra etc
Make.it.count...
MAKE SURE U GOT THAT ROUND TRIP TICKET READY

Am hoping to go around xmas time this month.. ;) many thanks!!!!!
🙏🙏🙏
Hi dave
Im planning a trip arpund 10 days with my mom like a quiet travel.. and maybe arriving lisbone and leaving from porto.
No Douro Valley? 🤔
Hi, Dave. Just watched your Lisbon show and wondered what Mario's tuktuk link is?
Why isn't the train the best option for travelling from Lisbon to Porto (and Coimbra)? Faster and more comfortable, isn't it?
Hi Dave, can you give us an update on the situation of buying property in Portugal since the last changes, can Americans still buy a small piece of land which is what I want to do.
Hey Dave ! I’d like the 9 day Tour🙏🏼
I’ll pay for my ticket there and back 🤞🏼
Usually the pool water is cold this time of the year…
Dave, what do you do with your luggage on the stop at Coimbra if you take the Flix bus? Are there any luggage storage solutions you recommend?
Dave are you guiding tours anymore? The website says this tour unavailable.
Nice video, as always on this channel. What are the restrictions that allow only US and Canadian citizens to join the tour?
We would love to do the tour!! Can you tell me if it’s handicapped accessible?
Dave I'm a bit worried about the weather for April next year. Probably a bit cold.
I am not David but I will answer that. April is normaly beautiful It is Spring season with all almond trees flowering.
Hello Dave. Is it too cold in Cascais in October? I mean for sweaming
Can anyone suggest a good website to look fir property in the Lisbon area or even in small towns close to Spain like Elvas.
Do we need to buy tickets for attraction in advance? If yes from where?
Would it still make sense to stop in Coimbra or Nazare on the way to Lisbon? Itinerary is Porto first then Lisbon
Thank you for not mentioning Av....well, I'd better not say.
Thinking of visiting soon but would love to go see Fatima. How can I do that ? Thank you
Ugh…the dates didn’t work for me. Ended up with a different tour group for my trip!
Why did you recommend getting the maximum car rental insurance? I’m always told those are scams.
Hi Dave. How was the food at O Corrido in Lisbon?
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you you are so welcome here
I’m sorry what happened in Porto
They were not real Portuguese
Your video is amazing
❤
Good❤

Bro I'm in India.. airalo is banned here.. how to apply for this.. any help is appreciated
Why a day trip to Sintra rather than stay a couple nights?
MOST INSURANCES ALREADY COVER RENTALS SO CHECK B4 U BUY THE EXPENSIVE RENTAL INSURANCE
Hi Dave
When talking about Sintra i would like to had the Palácio of Monserrate and the Chalet of Condessa D'Ela on the Palacio da Pena gardens.
Dunno if you already visited, but i recomend i would like to recomend a few places you can visit :
- The city Elvas, theres a big military museum and a famous old fort, Forte da Graça. Its know has the fortaleza city.
- Viana do Castelo, the huge church on the hill with a very scenic view, Igreja Santa Luzia, and hospital boat called Gil Eanes, and the windmills of Montedor
Also keep an eye on the train company, CP - Comboios de Portugal, cause in the summer there is a steam historical train that shuffles between Régua and Tua, showing the beautifull Douro River while riding an historical train.
And the three Saints Seasons is upon us... Santo António in Lisbon, São João in Porto and São Pedro in Povoa do Varzim.
No Spa, shopping?
We have to admit we are slow 🦥 in Portugal, not that that's a bad thing, 400 years to discover truffles in our territory, after every country in Europe discovered theirs, 50 years to decide the new aeroporto whereabouts...I can give more examples, but I would be here a eternity 😂
