As someone who was in the military and now works in one of those obscure trades I can confirm that being union (even in a right to work state) is pretty nice. Specially when working for a corporation that treats their first line management horribly. It is mind blowing how corporations insist on greed to the point of killing their own company but at least I can tell them to their face what I think and there’s nothing they can do about it 😈

Not in this top 3 but just thought I’d share: I’m a lorry driver in the UK and love my job.
I have a degree but found that lorry driving can compete very well in terms of pay and even in terms of work/life balance with graduate jobs because of how strictly regulated lorry driving is in the UK. Also I love being out and about and physically active and today drove along both a gorgeous coastline and through rolling hills today. No job’s perfect but it’s always a good sign when after having a 10+ hour work day for whatever reason (not all my days are that long) you find yourself thinking “you know what? As far as a 10-14 hour day goes, this hasn’t been that bad”.

Speaking from a military perspective, though I got out 4 years ago. It seemed about 50/50 on job satisfaction. But that's still higher than what I've seen in the civilian world. And I 100% believe it's because in the Marines at least, you always know the path to promotion or growth. Sometimes it's a very very slow path (like the specific job I had), but at least you know it and could write it on paper if asked. You don't see that much in corporate America, maybe you'll get promoted next quarter, maybe 2 years from now, maybe 5, you don't know with certainty and that isn't okay with most people.
To my fellow leaders out there in the civilian markets: take the time to sit with your team members, find out what they want, what they expect, and what they need. Then makes plans with those individuals to meet those metrics (within reason obviously). I PROMISE you'll see results from them, and lower turnover.

Income stability and good benefits, plus rare skills are very fulfilling and that makes for happy career in ANY field. I also think that what job makes the person happy depends on that persons skill sets and personality and I think everyone should have a job where they wouldn’t mind doing and what gives them a stable enough income. A job is certainly never a hobby and yes, there will be aspects of every job you’ll ever have that you wouldn’t like but you just have to do…because it’s work! I can confirm, government workers tend to be pretty happy with their jobs so long as their boss isn't a complete ass. I don't work for the feds but I do work for a state in IT. A significant amount of the IT people at my work, which has close to 200 IT employees overall, have been there for over 20 years. Once you get into it, you don't want to leave.
There's no stress or pressure to make profit or boost numbers so the shareholders are happy. We're there to do the job and the job gets done so people tend to be pretty low stress. They pay sucks when you compare it to corporate work but corpo slaves don't get hardly any time off where I live and we get 35 days of vacation and sick combined and another 10-11 days of paid holiday time.

Working for the govt in defense contracting was great in some ways and bad in others. Work-life balance and benefits are amazing. But in that industry there’s not a lot of incentive to perform, so I saw a lot of subpar people settled into their jobs knowing they’ll never be fired. And, at least for me, there’s the moral issue of working for the military but that obv comes down to subjective personal opinions.

my dad is a retired navy MCPO, although the deployments were very stressful for him because he missed a lot of our milestones and school events, he has met so many amazing people and has so many friends around the country. we are planning a surprise 50th birthday party for him in texas in the middle of america, so all his friends can meet up in the middle of the country and celebrate for him. i cannot wait for his reaction when he sees all his friends there!
sometimes when going on road trips, he doesn’t even have to book a hotel, his friends are more than glad to have him over and spend the night lol

I wish i could say i was in the majority when it came to being happy as a chiropractor. I was the exact opposite of happy working as one. And I'm kinda glad i got out of it, despite sinking so much time, resources and money into it

Occupational Therapist here. The paperwork is a drag, but i LOVE working with my people. Also my colleagues have the same drive to help others so not much of that toxic, competitive stuff I've heard about.

I’ll definitely say the military is hit or miss. People either love it, or they are Uber miserable and hate their lives. I loved it, but I UNDERSTANDABLY get why people hate it.

I'm a speech pathologist and I can say it's very rewarding but also incredibly difficult and exhausting work. I can become burnt out quite fast if I'm not careful to deliberately make time for life balance.

Coast guard wife here... My husband was an officer & proud to be but got out as soon as he could because of the terrible work life balance, forced relocating, and incompetent leadership/ beaurocracy that made the good leaders unable to do their job.

I worked for the federal government for 14 years and I like it mostly for the benefits and the fact that I have an absurd amount of paid time off. Up to 240 hours rolls over every year. This year I had to use a month of pto just to not lose it and I’ll get an increase to 8 hours of paid time off a pay period at the end of next year.

My husband is an elevator mechanic and he loves his job! He’s very kinesthetic and needs constant challenges and variety. A desk job is his worst nightmare. With this every day he has a new problem, gets to go somewhere new. It has plenty of frustrations like every job, mostly the politics in the office-side of the company. And there is some physical risk involved. But he is happy and it supports our family very well, I’m able to be a stay at home mom because of his job

Saying the military has good work-life balance is laughable and misleading. Government jobs, yeah! Being actual active-duty military, no. There is a reason why the child development centers on base are filled to the brim and why recruitment is at a huge deficit right now.
