    I've done that a bunch of times over the years. Only tell the new company why you want the delay if it sounds good. For example, "I'd like to delay my start a couple of weeks because I'd like to leave things tidy at my current employer, rather than abandoning them." Another time I had planned to visit my elderly mother for her 85th birthday just three weeks after my start date. If someone has a problem with you wanting to visit an elderly relative, you don't want to work fro them, anyway.
    The one time I didn't say what I was doing was when I was planning on taking a medical leave of absence from the current job to give myself a month of recovery time before I started the new job.

    I applaud you for getting rid of the multiple "likes" in the more professional responses. The peppering of the word "like" in random places is a good thing to avoid. I was just on a search committee, and one person didn't get the job because of overuse of the word "like." It's unprofessional and no one wants to listen to it. It also hurts your credibility.

    Not sure if it's a US thing, but being in HR in the EU I can tell the company will wait for u if there is no option B, if you gel really well with interviwers during recruiting and if your skills are worth it.
    Bringing up unavailibility on the last minute of negotiations is from my perspective a bad move. If you tell out of the gate your starting point it will say a lot about honesty and liability. you don't need to go into details. That's why most of job sites over here will put in "please state your starting date", so this whole debacle is avoided.
    If the company is scrambling to fill the gap of the position and are at urgency they will most likely tell you thanx, but no thanx and go with the next best person.

    God, I'm in that boat. I have a trip planned in a month, but I'm also going from interview to interview. I'm worried on how to bring that up if I get an offer before that.

    Is that what you really have to do in the US, do they not just ask you if you have any holidays booked? every job ive started here in the UK literally just ask you after they offer you the job or they ask you fill out a form.

    Lack of labour rights in the US is still so wild to me. In most European countries, holiday is accumulated based on employment in general and the fact that you have to have holiday during a certain period of employment and unused holiday just transfers over. If you've worked for the past 6 months full-time, you do still need time off and rest from work in general, your new employment doesn't just re-start that clock. If you have time off booked and then end up switching jobs before it comes up, the new place of employment legally has to accommodate your pre-planned holiday and you don't have to mention it at all beyond just booking it off once you're hired. The only thing it does is that your probation gets extended by the amount time you're off work.

    Ahhh this was scary! I watched this video a while back and just got a new job offer for a company that has put me in the exact position this video mentions. I'm thankful I remembered this so I could search for it again and use it to help me inform my new employer about it! It's really hard for me to be direct and to the point about stuff like this so I'm thankful I had an outline of what to say. Glad I subscribed!!

    If you can't talk to your new employer like a normal human being instead of ChatGPT, they're a pain anyways. Any normal employer will understand if you say "Btw, I planned a vacation before I knew about this job"

    Honestly right now I'd throw any vacation to get a job. I'm in the second semester of my bachelors and want a job at an actual company and not just work as a cashier (it's called a Werkstudent) and I continuously keep getting rejected :(

    I usually say it during my first job interview that I have some previous commitments I can't postpone. I also say I'm going to need a month off every 15/18 months to visit my family in another country. Luckily it's not the US so I generally get 4 weeks of paid time off

    I literally lost my job yesterday, but I knew I was gonna have to find a new job about a week ago. I have a few interviews lined up for jobs that I really want but the problem is is I have a vacation for seven days in early June and then I have accelerated college courses in the month of July which I think I’ll still be able to work full-time. I just am going to have to work my butt off and then I also have another five day vacation at the end of August. I had this all figured out with my other job and of course right before summer comes I lose my job, so I don’t know how I’m gonna bring this up to any of these possible places that might hire me. It’s not like I can wait a month to start this job but what am I gonna do? start the job, do the training, work for like a week or two and then go on vacation? UGHHH

  • @annwartnick7878
    @annwartnick7878 6 месяцев назад

    I’m literally going through this right now except my vacation is in a month so I can’t wait a month to start my job but the problem is I have another vacation in three months. These vacations are only like five days long but it still sucks and I don’t know how to bring it up to whatever job I’m gonna take. I already had this figured out with my last job but that job just wasn’t working out so now I’m quickly looking for another one but it’s so hard to bring up that I already have two vacations in the next like 3 to 4 months.

    I've been in this situation and handled it much like Erin's second version. I spoke as if there was no changing or canceling the trip. Instead of asking permission, I confidently gave them two choices, and they chose. If I had asked permission or hedged, they would have probably said no.

    I've never negotiating a starting day with someone without allowing for these little bumps (trips or even children's school start date). A new person isn't going to land running so it's easy to flexible with the start date. (It gives me time to arrange training, do the intake paperwork, choose who they'll shadow with when they start.)
