#1.Pans Labyrinth #2.Das Boot #3.The Good the Bad and the Ugly #4.Reservoir Dogs #5.Nightcrawler #6.Memento #7.Brazil #8.Fight Club #9.The Empire Strikes Back #10.Moonrise Kingdom
"Psycho" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" should be tied for #1. "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" is the only movie to be nominated for nine Academy Awards without also being nominated for Best Picture.
Great list! But I missed those movies: Casino - The Age of Innocence - Memento - Interstellar - A Simple Plan - Blade Runner - Rear Window - Matrix - Beasts of No Nation - Once Upon a Time in the West - Laura.
I would have included: The Diving Bell & the Butterfly (2007) "Crocodile" Dundee (1986) Leaving Las Vegas (1995) Cape Fear (1991) Do the Right Thing (1989) Casino (1995) Malcolm X (1992) Batman (1989) Radio Days (1987) Trois Couleurs: Rouge (1994) Papillon (1973) Spirited Away (2002) Stand & Deliver (1988) ....and my #1...Hoosiers (1986)
It's hard to believe that some of these films were not nominated for best picture. I can understand Bringing up Baby, Psycho and The Shining because they were so misunderstood at the time but movies like Singin in the Rain, North by Northwest, 2001: A Space Odyssey, City Lights, and Some Like it Hot not getting nominated is criminal.
Good choices! Thanks for including NORTH BY NORTHWEST, an oversight that rankled with me terribly at the time. I've been jaded about the Oscars ever since.
Yes: "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"... a movie that gets more riveting, terrifying, gut-wrenching, and horrific as it goes... and it's about a dance contest (!).
I never thought i would see a scene from the shining mixed with the lion king soundtrack. For some odd reason it really works well together lol. Speaking of the lion king, that should of also got a nomination.
People will always be disappointed that their favorites are missing. Two of mine are The Night Of The Hunter, and Paths Of Glory (another Kubrick film). May-be they're too old. Another important point is that not all films are in English. I like your work; more please.
Excellent list, I can't believe 2001, Psycho, Manhattan, North by Northwest, The Good, the bad, and the Ugly, Some Like it Hot, and The Shining weren't even nominated. These are some of the most iconic films of all time. Academy Awards = discredited in perpetuity.
My consensus: 25-19: Have not seen.. 18: Not my favorite film of 1940 (The honor goes to Waterloo Bridge) Pinocchio was a wonderful movie and is one of my favorite Disney movies! 17: The fact that Singin' in the Rain was snubbed is a mystery itself! The best of 1952! 16-14: Have not seen... 13: Though it is not my favorite film of 1938 (that honor goes to The Adventures of Robin Hood), Bringing Up Baby was very funny and wonderfully done! 12: I enjoyed Who Framed Roger Rabbit quite a bit! 11-8: Have not seen... 7: Psycho was robbed of a nomination! I loved it, but I like Spartacus (also not nominated) more. 6: Have not seen... 5: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was well made! Great movie! Though my favorite movie of 1966 is A Man for All Seasons. 4 and 3: Have not seen... 2: Some Like It Hot was amazing and hilarious! It's my favorite comedy! However, my favorite movie of 1959 is Ben-Hur. 1: Have not seen...
I'd certainly root for Pinocchio, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Thelma & Louise, Empire Strikes Back, City Lights, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 2001 A Space Odyssey, City Of God and The Last Crusade. Great list!
btw I would add Do the Right Thing, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The General, The Birth of a Nation, Intolerance, and The Gold Rush are good candidates too even though they were released before the 1st Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.
Good list & video. Your numbering is a bit off, though, and you forgot the likes of 'Paths of Glory,' 'The Searchers' and 'The Third Man.' Can't have a top 25 list like this (or even a top 10 list) without including those. :)
excelent list and unexpected and deserved #1, I also love and agree with you with North by Northwest, Psycho, The Good the bad and the ugly, The Dark Knight, Seven, Who frammed Roger Rabbit, and Singing in the Rain, PERFECT FILMS, and i will add ...And Justice For All, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Shutter Island and Casino Royale.
Vertigo, Metropolis, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, The Rules of the Game, Tokyo Story,8 1/2,La Strada, The Night of the Hunter, Akira, Modern Times, Eraserhead, The Searchers, The 400 Blows, The Bicycle Thief, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Quadrophenia, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Do the Right Thing, Boys in the Hood, East of Eden, Vertigo, Gone Girl, Foxcatcher, Straight Outta Compton, Steve Jobs, Carol, Nightcrawler, The Master
Interesting list, though a few I would seriously disagree with (A League of Their own, really?)I'd add Vertigo, The Searchers, Paths of Glory, Do the Right Thing, Momento, Goldfinger, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, North by Northwest.
I was going to ignore this, but you tempted me by saying I need to do research. 2001 WAS NOT nominated for Best Picture- YOU do some research, that is a fact my friend! Yes Oliver! Won best picture, but Kubrick's masterpiece was not among the nominees. And Woody Allen's Manhattan was also NOT a best picture nominee, and not every Allen film gets nominated. I suggest you review your facts before coming at me with false accusations.
@tornadomaster96 I think they considered it through. Back then only 5 pictures could get nominated for best picture a year after The Dark Knight could have been nominated they changed it to 10. If they had changed it to 10 the year The Dark Knight could have been nominated it probably would have
Great list Jason, I really enjoy your other list videos also. Having "Circle of Life" playing at the end with the elevator blood of The Shinning spilling out probably wasn't a good choice. LOL!!!
Thank God you put up City Lights. an absolute masterpiece. I also think Fantasia should have been nominated, phenomenal film. King Kong also should have been nominated for best picture. think about it this way, King Kong is still one of the most entertaining classic films ever.
The Miracle Worker (1962), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Toy Story (1995), Ran (1985), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), American History X (1998), The Truman Show (1998), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Shrek 2 (2004). I understand you can't add them all but these are my reccomendations. Terrible music selection but pretty good list.
ok here we go would have added "Magnolia", "Young Frankenstein", "Blade Runner", "Fight Club", "Boogie Nights", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Private Benjamin", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "What's Up Doc?", "Harold and Maude", "Ed Wood", "Jackie Brown", "Mean Streets", and "The King of Comedy"..from watching your vids I see you are a huge fan of "The Shining", "Groundhog Day", "Bringing Up Baby" and "A League of Their Own".. love the first 3, but "Leaugue" is just Eh IMO!
Great list, some of these surprise me as to they weren't nominated at all like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Thelma & Louise. But I'm glad The Shining was number one. That movie never truly got the recognition is deserved. The only addition or change I would make is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, it definitely should've been nominated. I may be a Potterhead, but I know a great movie when I see one and that was one.
'Blade Runner' and 'In the Mood for Love' should've not only been nominated, but also snap the statuette with ease. On the contrary, some films on the list are plain average and didn't really deserve such acclaim, 'Shining', "bad" 'Scarface' or 'Dark Knight', just to name a few - I chose these 3, since they seem to be the most overhyped.
Bringing Up Baby is still a great film and extremely watchable after 82 years. Not many from that era are. You could replace most of the films on the list with Das Boot - it is the greatest anti-war film ever made. The ending gets me every time.
Agree with Some Like It Hot, Psycho, City Lights, Touch of Evil, 2001, Singin' in the Rain, North By Northwest. Loved City of God but not including foreign films since you generally don't (if you did, how could you omit Grand Illusion, 8 1/2, Tokyo Story, Andrei Rublev, etc. I add the following to your 7 above: Sunrise (up for "artistic quality of production, not Best Picture, which went to Wings) King Kong, Modern Times, The Magnificent Ambersons, The Third Man, continued.
How in the actual fuck is Thelma and Louise a better film than The Good the Bad and the Ugly?! Also how did Seven make the list but Das Boot only an honorable mention?
hard to believe that the shining was nominated for razzie awards, it sometimes takes years for films to be appreciated, psycho got mixed reviews when it was first released now considered one of the greatest films of all time.
Its amaing how Singing in the Rain was not recognized at the time, but is now considered to be one of the best movies ever made. How was it not nominated yet Wizard of Oz was (not the WOz is not amazing) but still...

I didn't say the music is terrible. I said the selection is terrible because it doesn't fit at all with most clips. Seriously, The Lion King soundtrack playing over Some Like it Hot and The Shining? Don't get me wrong, the music is great but it doesn't fit at all.
How about all of last decade? (* mean it should have won) 2001 Black Hawk Down, The Others 2002 Catch me if you Can, Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets 2003 Dogville*, Kill Bill vol 1 2004 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*, Shaun of the Dead, The Incredibles, Kill Bill vol 2 2005 Sin City, 2006 Pan's Labyrinth, Casino Royale, and Children of Men 2007 Sweeney Todd 2008 The Dark Knight*
What about Passion Of The Christ, Apocalipto? I'm not a big fan of Mel Gibson and his personal issues but his talent to make movies has something to say. These two movies are just some serious pieces of cinematic art.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit does seem to be overlooked for some reason. It was a great acheivement and even AFI forgets it. I have the list of their 400 (right FOUR hundred) greatest and it isn't even on there. Not sure why.
How could you possibly NOT include Hitchcock's two 1950's masterpieces, Rear Window and Vertigo?
#1.Pans Labyrinth
#2.Das Boot
#3.The Good the Bad and the Ugly
#4.Reservoir Dogs
#5.Nightcrawler

2001: A Space Odyssey deserved #1.
Good choices! Thanks for including NORTH BY NORTHWEST, an oversight that rankled with me terribly at the time. I've been jaded about the Oscars ever since.
Very solid list, but if there's any film that I would add, it would be Almost Famous.
PLEEEEASE THE NAME OF THE SONG THAT STARTS AT 3:53
+Ronald Rebellions
"Breathe me" - Sia
It actually starts at 3:30, but continues at 3:53
mulholland drive?
Terrific movie. Deserved at least an honourable mention.
Yes: "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"... a movie that gets more riveting, terrifying, gut-wrenching, and horrific as it goes... and it's about a dance contest (!).
Anyone know where I can find this version of "Circle of Life"?
good list
Feel it's missing Catch Me If You Can, Casino, and The Prestige though
Hey what's the name of the music which starts at 1:57?
Great list! I've seen most of these, but thanks for giving me a few new ones to put on my 'must see' list. (You missed Sharknado) ;)
Someone's gotta tell me what is that music from at 1:57?
I never thought i would see a scene from the shining mixed with the lion king soundtrack. For some odd reason it really works well together lol. Speaking of the lion king, that should of also got a nomination.
"Bringing Up Baby"...well this IS a JasonMovieGuy video! 8) Awesomely made list Jason!
THE DARK KNIGHT Fuck yeahhhhhhh! (won "Slumdog Millonaire", seriously?)
THE SHINNING, THELMA & LOUISE, WALL-E, INTERSTELLAR, etc...
The Usual Suspects?
Where was THE SEARCHERS?
City of God! thumbs up for Brasil!!!
such a fantastic effort on the video just wanted to say.xx
People will always be disappointed that their favorites are missing. Two of mine are The Night Of The Hunter, and Paths Of Glory (another Kubrick film). May-be they're too old. Another important point is that not all films are in English. I like your work; more please.
which films would you care to dispute?
Excellent list, I can't believe 2001, Psycho, Manhattan, North by Northwest, The Good, the bad, and the Ugly, Some Like it Hot, and The Shining weren't even nominated. These are some of the most iconic films of all time. Academy Awards = discredited in perpetuity.
The Searchers?
What about Fight Club? The Third Man? Sophie's Choice? and Billy Elliot?
Blade Runner.....????
Great choices. Jurassic Park, Hoop Dreams, Do the Right Thing, and Terminator 2 all come to mind as well.
You are very talented doing these lists , My congratulations, I also loved Shawshank redemption with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robins.
Music from 'The Lion King' is used in the video. He probably didn't watch the entire vid and assumed 'Lion King' was included.
My consensus:
25-19: Have not seen..

North by Northwest is a wonderful film!
No esta mal la lista, pero en el orden no estoy de acuerdo, yo enrocaria El Resplandor al puesto 11 y pasaria 2001: Odisea del espacio al puesto 1.
Why Sophie's Choice wasn't on the list?
What About Magnolia ?
I'd certainly root for Pinocchio, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Thelma & Louise, Empire Strikes Back, City Lights, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 2001 A Space Odyssey, City Of God and The Last Crusade.

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
You are my hero man......brutal video.....love it.
Where's Vertigo and Rear Window?
And Fight Club ?
Good choices, but i would add "Mean Streets", Peace
Vertigo, Metropolis, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc, The Rules of the Game, Tokyo Story,8 1/2,La Strada, The Night of the Hunter, Akira, Modern Times, Eraserhead, The Searchers, The 400 Blows, The Bicycle Thief, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Quadrophenia, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

you should do one with directors now

Yes, The Shining. But where's Blade Runner? And Rosemary's Baby? You make great
videos!
I've thoroughly enjoyed your lists of mistakes - this one's missing Empire of the Sun.
#1 King Kong (1933)
#2,3,4 "Paths of Glory(1957), "A Face in the Crowd"(1957), "The Sweet Smell of Success"(1957)
The Fisher King, Walk the Line, The Last Samurai
The Usual Suspects, Jurassic Park, Sling Blade

I may be a Potterhead, but I know a great movie when I see one and that was one.
Vertigo?
Many of the movies you mentioned WERE nominated for BP; was about pictures Not nominated
@ritsfata Nope. That year the nominees were The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE...

Singin in the Rain and King Kong (33) are the two best movies not nominated for best picture. Hell both are in the top five best movies ever made.
I add the following to your 7 above:
Sunrise (up for "artistic quality of production, not Best Picture, which went to Wings)
King Kong, Modern Times, The Magnificent Ambersons, The Third Man, continued.
"Every Woody Allen film gets a nomination." LOL, except no? Woody's been making movies pretty consistently, about one a year since, like, 1975, and he only has three (3) Best Picture nominations. That's pretty ridiculous.
What about the untouchables, still agree with your list though.
And I'm pretty sure that roger rabbit was nominated.
2001: A Space Odyssey not even nominated!?!
Fun list.
The good, the bad and the ugly is the biggest shock for me.
Not for Best Picture, no. It was nominated for Director, Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration and Supporting Actress.
I would have loved to see Edward Scissorhands on this list as well.
full metal jacket and the lion king should of made it on this list somewhere
I am talking nominations here. Black Hawk Down is a hell of a lot better than Moulin Rouge! which got a nom in 2001. Same with most of the other films I mentioned.
Hell I'll say it, Dark Knight was the best film of the decade. Hands down.
who the hell was irvin keshnir?? george lucas directed star wars, that was like general knowledge to any movie fan
George Lucas directed A New Hope. Irvin Keshnir directed and wrote Empire Strikes back. That's probably why it turned out so good.
really? wow, so basically, new hope is his only good movie?? with return of the jedi being ok, the prequels sucking
Ahmed Al Khan No Empire Strikes Back is the only good one. That was the one that posed some moral complexity. George Lucas is a terrible writer. A New Hope was fine. Return of the Jedi was mediocre at best. The prequels were trash.
yeah thats what i meant, i meant a new hope is the only good movie DIRECTED by lucas, sure he was behind indiana jones too, but come on, that was mostly Speilberg
+degree7
The first movie is called "Stars Wars episode IV: A New Hope"
Instead of Thelma and Louise it should be Boyz n the Hood. A MUCH better 1991 film. And to think T&L beat it for original screenplay too. Insane.
I didn't say the music is terrible. I said the selection is terrible because it doesn't fit at all with most clips. Seriously, The Lion King soundtrack playing over Some Like it Hot and The Shining? Don't get me wrong, the music is great but it doesn't fit at all.
I agree with all of them! Thanks for posting!!! :D
where is sacarface
How about all of last decade? (* mean it should have won)
2001 Black Hawk Down, The Others
2002 Catch me if you Can, Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets
2003 Dogville*, Kill Bill vol 1
2004 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*, Shaun of the Dead, The Incredibles, Kill Bill vol 2
2005 Sin City,
2006 Pan's Labyrinth, Casino Royale, and Children of Men
2007 Sweeney Todd
2008 The Dark Knight*
I agree with your list but would not have placed The Shining as number one. The Academy made the biggest mistakes by not nominating these films.
What about Passion Of The Christ, Apocalipto? I'm not a big fan of Mel Gibson and his personal issues but his talent to make movies has something to say. These two movies are just some serious pieces of cinematic art.
Some Like It Hot was really good because of Jack Lemmon.
Gosh, the best actor ever.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit does seem to be overlooked for some reason. It was a great acheivement and even AFI forgets it. I have the list of their 400 (right FOUR hundred) greatest and it isn't even on there. Not sure why.
also 100% agree with WFRR and Pinnochio.
Because of the music I thought you would put The Lion King at number 1...And you should have !
I Though You Were Going To Have The Lion King Be Number 1 with the Music...Instead...The Shining??
