As a world traveler , I have noticed that Starbucks charges more for one cup of coffee than you would pay for a good meal in many countries . I was recently in Singapore and I look at the Starbucks menu and it showed $8 for a large cup of black tea .Why would anyone pay $8 ? when you can make your own for less than 20 cents ; When I travel I make my own hot drinks or go into a cheap supermarket to buy a cold drink and I save a fortune in a year .

A little bit of history. Starbucks started on Pike Street in Seattle, thus the name of there most brewed coffee, Pike Street. Pike street is now a upper class gentrified neighborhood, but not in 1971. I was there in 1969-70 and Pike Street was not a "hippie' neighborhood. It was the red light district full of houses of ill repute, cheap dive bars, and other places catering to the appetites of the Army guys from Ft. Lewis and the Sailors from Puget Sound. Seattle wasn't then and never has been, a destination for people seeking alternative lifestyles. There was a small area that catered to that, but every major city in the United States had an area catering to alternative lifestyles. Every time I go to Starbucks, I remember the sites and sounds of Pike Street.

Corporate doesn't understand their employees. Customers expect a fast food experience at a cafe that doesn't do fast food. The person in front of you ordered 15 drinks when you only ordered one and only one person is on bar. This is why it takes a while to get your drink.
While I agree with u that Corporate doesn't always want to listen to the baristas, it's not always like that with getting ur drink so late. Every store is driven by the demand from the nearby area. That's how each store receives the amount of hours that are going to be divided by its employees. If the demand on a wednesday night is usually low it doesn't make sense to have two people on bar. It's usually a matter of how the shift leads "play call" their shift. If the shift lead clearly doesn't know what they are doing or doesn't particularly care about efficiency than ur likely to get ur drink late. But if u got good shift leads they know when to step in or when to let their baristas take care of it. It all depends on the store. If ur local store is not very good in that regard, see if u can try another one nearby. Just like with every company and every store there are less than great employees that drag the service down for whatever reason. - Ur local barista
What you said is true for the present day food products--I think Starbucks gets their prepackaged food from the standard huge mass-produced suppliers, whereas in the olden days, they got their pastries from smaller purveyors, and *NOT* "factory-packaged" like what they have now-a-days with all the poisonous artificial ingredients and preservatives.
They have fancy sounding breakfast sandwiches that come in a vacuum sealed plastic like it's some kind of gas station hoagie. Where the frick is this sandwich factory?
Exaggerated in some of the facts. Starbucks didn't bring coffee to the world. Nor does it dominate. For example it failed in Australia - a country that already had great coffee bring served by thousands of independent stores ask at a cheaper price than the mass produced much Starbucks served. It closed most of its stores. Same as New Zealand. Same in Britain.
I’m not sure it ever said Starbucks brought coffee to the world, it said they brought the Italian style coffee, something many people had never experienced before, and made it mainstream, more so than anybody else. For example, and this might surprise you, but the great coffee culture of Australia you mentioned largely only exists because of Starbucks and the phenomenal influence it had. Greek and Italian migrants brought espresso Coffee to Australia after World War Two, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that it actually took off and became popular, and those thousands of independent coffee shops you are thinking of started popping up everywhere after seeing the success of the Starbucks in America and trying to replicate it at home. Who cares if they failed in a handful of markets, nobody is successful everywhere. They operate in something like 75 countries and are by far, the world’s largest coffee chain, more than four times the size of the second biggest. If you don’t think that constitutes dominating, I’m not really sure you understand what the word means.
xr6lad I was on the team that refused Starbucks to lease a flag ship building in Sydney Australia. I was the only American on the team. The Aussies felt it was akin to putting a McDonald’s in the building. And Australia has great coffee on its own merits.
You know what...now that I think about it. I don't remember seeing a Starbucks in Rome, but I do remember that good-a$$ coffee I was drinking while I was there....nothing like anything I've ever had in other countries.
I lived in Australia and I loved the fact that they dont have starbucks there. the coffee tasted like real coffe and not syrup coffee starbucks serves.
World for the Americans is 'America' itself.. most can't think beyond it. Yet I'd say the way they expanded their business convincing people that it's the best coffee is an admirable business strategy.
I remember Starbucks early 80ies in Seattle where they were still a relatively small company. Their business model these days and their focus on just making a profit turned this world player into a place where coffee tastes bitter and the SB experience disappeared when Schultz left the company. I haven’t seen the inside of a SB since I moved to Europe early 90ies. Best decision I ever made.
I have much more appreciation for tradition and authenticity. I think this killed what was left of my visits to what seems more commercial and will travel farther for something more tasteful 💗
I like starbucks coffee, but bought my own Nespresso and can make a very decent coffee at home for a fraction of the price now. I also used to like to get a hot sandwich with my coffee, but thats gone now. I switched to a ham and cheese hot pastry... then that was taken away... now I am clinging to the sous-vide eggs... please don't take them. Thats the only thing that keeps me coming back to starbucks now I can make just as good a coffee at home.
Starbucks was the first place that prohibited indoor smoking in Japan.... women loved it and males followed women-huge success. Kisaten traditional coffee shops were full of obnoxious smokers
They just made themselves an overpriced trend item that everyone thinks is a low level status symbol and wants to show off 🙄 Even their sandwiches and muffins etc are trash 🤢🤮
In Saudi, serious coffee drinkers prefer Dunkin’ Donuts over Starbucks for its affordable prices. A cup from starbucks can buy you a very good dinner in Saudi while Dunkin’s prices are within the local drinks prices
How to have your own Starbucks: Take a cup Ask for your own name Write a wrong name onto the cup Fill it with 2% coffee, 15% milk, 3% syrup, 5% cream, 75% ice Burn $8
I found my cat at a Starbucks then stopped going. Seeing all the jerks pass by this kitten begging in the cold for food and water was just too heartless. My $5 per cup can now go to someone much more deserving of my time, attention, and money. They purchased and then shut down Teavana my favorite tea company, and that is also unforgivable.
Look. If we go back to the semi-automatic machines and bring back the romance, we are going to have a ton of unhappy customers that are going to have to all wait at the pick up point for far longer than they want to. I work at a starbucks in Hollywood, CA. There are a ton of businesses nearby. And despite the fact that there are two other starbucks stores within an ear-shot and a Coffee Bean across the streett we occasionally have a really busy shift. If we're going to have a line out the door it is impractical to take ur sweet time on the bar just because some people have a romantic idea about how coffee should be made. Demand pushes innovation and changes. I occasionally have to be making anywhere from 4-6 drinks at a time. I don't have time to loligag and take my sweet time to make every one of them in a romantic way because otherwise I'm going to have 15 people staring at me in anger.
Starbucks is ridiculous when it comes to drink standards. 4 years ago when I worked at a Starbucks in an airport, there were 4 steps to making a drink. 1, stream milk, 2, press the espresso shot button, 3. Pump syrup flavors and hopefully put it under the espresso spout by the time it starts pouring (most of the time it doesn't), 4, pour the milk. If you strayed from that, you would fail a secret shop. Yeah, everyone had their own style of making drinks. During a rush, I would fill ALL of the milk pitchers and steam ALL of them one after the next so that I would have milk ready to go. Do you really think I'm going to sit there and stream one pitcher at a time per drink??? That would take forever and customers would get mad. You can bet your ass that I also put the syrup in all the cups in the line. And not being allowed to make more than 1 frappuccino is bull shit considering how LONG they take to make.
Howard Schultz was one of the best CEO’s in the world. He was responding in record time to social changes, market and economic developments, adjusted throughout the world with incredible not at least often risky approaches the brand. He must have never thought for a second that his brand won’t win over the competitions. My daily visits at Starbucks stores are worthwhile and I enjoy my Gold Member status for years. Btw, the food is nearly as bad as often claimed in the media.....compare fair and balanced with others and you will agree!
Modern CEOs very often are forgetting behind all those numbers on spreadsheets are people. Humans. And we humans are not satisfied with simply stuffing food and drinks into our throats like we are some livestock. Same can be applied to every industry.
Here in the Philippines, a Starbucks cup cost the same as 2 full meals or 3 budget meals. And when I make iced coffee, it's just a pitcher with 4 packets of that cheap coffee you can buy in groceries. The full pitcher cost about a quarter of a Starbucks cup. Granted it doesn't taste as good, but it's a cheap solution for that caffeine fix.
9/30/2018. I was very disappointed at Starbucks in Taiwan. The cup of coffee is not tasted as coffee. In the San Francisco airport, coffee quality is still lacking. Looking for better place for coffee.
Sorry but Starbucks sucks! I prefer and would rather go to Costa here in Ireland and in fairness, the coffee in Mc Donald's tastes even far better than Starbucks! Even when I went to America to visit my brother, we chose not to go to Starbucks. In the Philippines, I was absolutely disappointed by the coffee (cappuccino) that they served; it was very expensive and the taste was crap! Since then, I have never gone back to Starbucks ever! It only became a craze because of its high-sounding name and it originated in America.
I've lived in Seattle for most of my years in the United States. You can find several Starbucks in just a few blocks. Given their pricey products and unstable coffee beans (sometimes taste fine sometimes absolutely terrible), I'd rather walk another block for great local coffee. Most people I know including myself go to sbux for convenience because it's everywhere and there must be a few right there, next to where you work......
I thought CNA interviewed Sandra Bullock (the SMU Asst Prof) abt Starbucks lol Would be cool if they interviewed Kenny G, the musician who also was a early investor.
As someone who brews their own black coffee from home most of the time, starbucks dont sell coffee. Most of their drinks are only like 20% coffee, if that. That's why I dont get it too often. Plus theres like 400 to 500 calories in just one drink in most ot their drinks.
That whole deal of providing a place of 'comfort' really seemed to go down the drain. I've noticed more and more and more stores dial down if not entirely remove ALL comfy seating, arm chairs especially. Those chairs and that type of comfy cozy setting is what got me hooked on the Starbucks Experience from a very young age. I take it SO personally to see those chairs goes and it's very transparent. Starbucks just wants your money, and wants you to GTFO. Well sorry but all I've noticed since this approach started was less and less traffic through their stores. Once the last comfy chair goes so will my last dollar. I'm in Vancouver, and luckily we still have some stores left with good seating but when I was in California 2 years ago there seemed to be hardly any left anywhere.
they light years far away from Italian coffee !!! I'd call it black piss, not even black but only brown. The cappuccino is served in soup bowl. They embarrassing the name cappuccino!!! The "short" espresso is so big and sour, back home a whole macchiato is shorter.. all in all Starbucks is disgusting, and Costa is a very same..if any one dear to call that coffee than, or it's an idiot or, newer tasted a proper coffee in life.
I'm in Seattle and Starbucks isn't the best coffee however it is cheaper even at the $2ish for 12oz. For me the biggest pro is I know what I want where ever I go in the world. Especially in places where the coffee culture isn't as strong like Texas Starbucks is a blessing. Another pro is if you just want you're black drip coffee Starbucks will do
yes their business model is world domination "so called globalisation" I was horrified to see they opened near Everest Base camp - don't get me wrong its great to see a company do well and people being constructive but with some sensitivity and watch out for greed and Ego
I never bought anything from Starbucks because they failed to establish themselves in the Australian market. Our local barrister is better at making real coffee, no weird cream or sugar syrup.
rahul Rathi , Correct ! They are an embarrassment of an Anti American Company spreading foolishness and Anti American Ideas. So I wouldn't drink this horse piss if you gave it to me.
Been going to Starbucks 20 plus years. In the mid to late 90s. I would sit down and drink a French press. You could get coffee passport books and if you were a good customer get invited to after hours taste tests. People were reading books and it was quiet. Early 2000s is when it changed to iced drinks and Frappuccinos. All of a sudden people were in large groups in business meetings and had laptops. Families and teens would now hang out all day. I have seen a lot of changes in the food and drinks over the years. I go almost every day and have tried independent coffee places. They all suck.
I only drink Starbucks now. if I only find dunkin I'm literally suffering inside.... Dunkin is too sweet and not strong... I hate overly sweet coffee. Right now I'm drinking a black cup of coffee ... lol
The training of a coffee Barista is crucial. The coffee bean being processed is an art. The brewing or cooking of the coffee bean is 4 minutes actually. The drying process of the whole bean, is essential as well. Burning can happen quickly if not observed and carefully crafted. That's why temp readings are also done. Grounded coffee that is freshly done is far better than buying already ground coffee. Regardless of sealed mylar packaging.❤
Honestly , local asian coffee is better than Starbucks coffee.. Also those large cups make hot coffee become cold in no time.. those cups have to be changed
$2.11 for a tall coffee is ridiculous! Starbucks lost its charm when it became political. Now people go in bring their own water and sit like a lump. If you buy coffee one can't even find a place to sit. I seldom go anymore.
Virginia M Conway what about 4.5$ for a tall late in China? This is just ridiculous and the taste of coffee is absolutely terrible: burned beans and that aftertaste is super bad.
When they closed stores for 3 hours in 2008 to re-train everybody how to make coffee, it sounds like a marketing stunt. How could they possibly have enough trainers for all those thousands of stores at the same time? If instead it was individual store managers then why wouldn't they train before and continuously? I think it was done as a message because dutifully all media talked about it... But they still have fully automatic machines so it's not like there was any real change to how they would make coffee....
I don't go there-so many issues, so little service, so cheap beans available everywhere else-I can go, buy beans, French press is myself faster...and my order is correct at home. Useless and I don't want to be corrected about my views on the world by a coffee seller-no thanks-hope they go under.
Some areas like Queen Anne and pioneer square, but that's because they're more historical areas where they didn't have much planning. As far as dirty, yes, it's a common issue in America
Schultz ("Starbucks") DELIBERATELY over-roast their coffee to MASK the low quality they roast. It IS just that simple. Also, they ("Starbucks") nearly were shut down in the early 1990's by the federal govt. as per deliberately for YEARS defrauding the customers on supposed Kona coffee which was FALSELY labeled. It was simply a mix of Costa Rican and Colombian. Schultz is a thief and liar, period. PERIOD!
It's like McDonald's is a necessary brand. If a client wants a coffe here in Miami you only have Cuban Cafeteria or Starbucks. And in a way is useful if you want coffe I wish there was like in Europe cafes like small that you can go drink there and hang out.
True is bad custumer service 80% of the time and the product in my opinion is not good just personal opinion the meat isn't good tasting. But is convenient I do like the Fille O Fish, Mc nuggets, frape, and their French fry... is functional do I prefer a restaurant yes do I have the time between clients to sit in a restaurant every day and eat calmly no so Mac is a solution for when I just need to get un hungry quick lol
Same I go to Starbucks because is right next to my office and there is one down stairs from my building and one in the marina so if I crave coffe and dont have time to drive 15-20 min to a nicer place then Starbucks gets my business. Do I think is the best coffe no do I like their brand no. But is cheap and functional
I dunno, my guess is charging 3x what everyone else is for basically extremely burnt coffee? ps there's more Tim Hortons chains around then there is starbucks ... I'm 45 minutes away from Toronto and can count 20 Timmy's to 1 Starbucks I see
This was awesome to watch! Very interesting.. Good o'l Howard aye..! (narrator lady... 'Alibaaabaaaa') also, looks like a lot of "Fortune 500 arm chair CEO's".. on here commenting about what what they have no clue about.. LOL!!

Interesting. This whole series is high quality, I'm working through them, good work.
The food at Starbucks is terrible. In Europe at least you can eat the pastries there but in North America there is literally nothing edible.
Watching this while drinking Turkish coffee :P
Me too!
Watching this while drinking Lipton tea-bag tea :) heh
This shocks me because they're opening stores like crazy in NJ and NY...
Actually Nespresso killed my Starbucks habits, unless its a hot summer day and I want an iced coffee.
starbucks/nespresso... go to italy and try real stuff
Starbucks was the first place that prohibited indoor smoking in Japan.... women loved it and males followed women-huge success. Kisaten traditional coffee shops were full of obnoxious smokers
They just made themselves an overpriced trend item that everyone thinks is a low level status symbol and wants to show off 🙄
Even their sandwiches and muffins etc are trash 🤢🤮
In Saudi, serious coffee drinkers prefer Dunkin’ Donuts over Starbucks for its affordable prices. A cup from starbucks can buy you a very good dinner in Saudi while Dunkin’s prices are within the local drinks prices
I went to Seattle just to drink starbucks coffee at Pike Market in their original store. I am from the Philippines.
Ruben Tecson who cares
@@gab5853 I cared I have to travel 36 hours just to taste starbucks coffee.
Hm, if you're going to Seattle again some time there are many better coffee shops like uptown espresso or storyville coffee
@@erikap4589 I will take your advise for good. It is a nice place to visit.
I still have no idea what the difference is between a latte and a frapachino. Or is there any? To me, coffee is coffee.
Latte means milk in Italian. Other than in Italy, a latte is basically just espresso on the bottom and the rest filled with milk.
Sbux didn't change coffee. Alfred Henry Peet CHANGED American coffee. HE cared about his product. Sbux just cares about $$$.
I learned to make cappuccinos on my own and my taste buds like it better than Starbucks. Plus my wallet is a little thicker.
I live in Seattle and I think that 90% of Starbucks are here. Yet there all always busy. Seattle just loves their coffee and are loyal to the brand
That's hilarious. There's almost 30,000 stores and a couple hundred are in Seattle.
Same story in Paris, they are always busy with queues.
In Seattle it's a cultural norm and a lot of the independent stores are even more expensive @ uptown espresso
Your in heaven ...
How to have your own Starbucks:
Take a cup
Ask for your own name
Write a wrong name onto the cup
Fill it with 2% coffee, 15% milk, 3% syrup, 5% cream, 75% ice
Burn $8
There is a Starbucks in the Louvre ,I thought it was an Installation! Very sad
The only thing worse than this documentary is its comment section.
it gave me chills....
Modern CEOs very often are forgetting behind all those numbers on spreadsheets are people. Humans. And we humans are not satisfied with simply stuffing food and drinks into our throats like we are some livestock. Same can be applied to every industry.
How would I live without my cookies and cream Frappuccino with NO coffee?
Not sure about the rest of the world, but my friends & I go to Starbucks for the gossips & AC. Never for the coffee hahaha...
The ending made me emotional
Schultz was a piece of dna to starbucks
They didn’t care if they lost their soul or identity. They were getting $1.40 a cup!
Reading back Pearson's marketing textbook saved his Starbucks.
Love this video
Starbucks is in no way shape or form in any sort of financial trouble.
Damn it ! But we can dream !
cannot tell the difference between espresso and latte.. hmm how intriguing lol
Thank for the information I hope it will help my friend with her job interview with Starbucks thanks.
There is a reason there is no Starbucks in Italy..
I thought CNA interviewed Sandra Bullock (the SMU Asst Prof) abt Starbucks lol
Would be cool if they interviewed Kenny G, the musician who also was a early investor.
As someone who brews their own black coffee from home most of the time, starbucks dont sell coffee. Most of their drinks are only like 20% coffee, if that. That's why I dont get it too often. Plus theres like 400 to 500 calories in just one drink in most ot their drinks.
I'm utterly amazed this franchise is even alive... Tried 3 coffee's, not one comparable to the avg coffee on the St's of Aus.... Fail Coffee
they didn't succeed here in Australia because we know what good coffee tastes like
my hearts in Seattle
$5 dollars for a cup of cold brew coffee too expensive, only time I go there if I really need it.
I'm in Vancouver, and luckily we still have some stores left with good seating but when I was in California 2 years ago there seemed to be hardly any left anywhere.
in the time we watched this video.....3 starbucks have opened for the first time......staggering.....Seattle Washington.....
they light years far away from Italian coffee !!! I'd call it black piss, not even black but only brown. The cappuccino is served in soup bowl. They embarrassing the name cappuccino!!!
The "short" espresso is so big and sour, back home a whole macchiato is shorter..
all in all Starbucks is disgusting, and Costa is a very same..if any one dear to call that coffee than, or it's an idiot or, newer tasted a proper coffee in life.
well said!!!
Five bucks...over priced coffee that tastes burnt EVERY TIME!
The coffee is over priced and bitter. The "food" is terrible. I don't see how they keep going.
I never bought anything from Starbucks because they failed to establish themselves in the Australian market. Our local barrister is better at making real coffee, no weird cream or sugar syrup.
Star buck is not coffee maker . No they are not .
rahul Rathi , Correct ! They are an embarrassment of an Anti American Company spreading foolishness and Anti American Ideas. So I wouldn't drink this horse piss if you gave it to me.
More like horse piss !
It's too expensive and no reason 2 drink that name cup .
Agree! Most their drinks are only like 20% coffee and that's why I rarely drink it.
They say they want to respect the Asian cultures but they keep track of coffee vs tea, what a load.
Starbucks sucks in Switzerland no good seats too many people
Been going to Starbucks 20 plus years.
"Howard Schultz to Anti-Gay-Marriage Starbucks Shareholder: 'You Can Sell Your Shares'"
I only drink Starbucks now. if I only find dunkin I'm literally suffering inside.... Dunkin is too sweet and not strong... I hate overly sweet coffee. Right now I'm drinking a black cup of coffee ... lol
the woman they have talking sounds really clueless there are matcha lattes everywhere lol
There coffee taste Burnt but I suffer through and so do others :p
That would the Baristas fault for expressing the coffee at over 100c.
What no comments about Starbucks' endless smug virtue signalling?
Honestly , local asian coffee is better than Starbucks coffee.. Also those large cups make hot coffee become cold in no time.. those cups have to be changed
overpriced coffee
$2.11 for a tall coffee is ridiculous! Starbucks lost its charm when it became political. Now people go in bring their own water and sit like a lump. If you buy coffee one can't even find a place to sit. I seldom go anymore.
Virginia M Conway what about 4.5$ for a tall late in China? This is just ridiculous and the taste of coffee is absolutely terrible: burned beans and that aftertaste is super bad.
So expensive coffee!...
But they still have fully automatic machines so it's not like there was any real change to how they would make coffee....
you can make starbucks coffee with same quality and quantity off the grocery for just like 30cents US dollar. in a developing country.
I don't go there-so many issues, so little service, so cheap beans available everywhere else-I can go, buy beans, French press is myself faster...and my order is correct at home. Useless and I don't want to be corrected about my views on the world by a coffee seller-no thanks-hope they go under.
seattle is so dirty looking, i cant figure out the vibe people like about it. roasds all broken up and confusing..
Some areas like Queen Anne and pioneer square, but that's because they're more historical areas where they didn't have much planning. As far as dirty, yes, it's a common issue in America
why almost everything almost collapsed
I call that place charbucks. whenever I have been there it was always over roasted bitter coffee.
I call the place Suck Butts ! Had their over priced communist mop water once. That was enough !
PERIOD!
Still treat their people like slaves. Standing for hours on end. No break-room. Minimum wage.
18.07, this is so slow??
Half a year is top freaking loooong???
Apple is starting to get mediocre too...
Starbucks Philippine branch reported cockroach inside a cup of coffee... yucky!
I can proudly say that I've never even set foot inside a Starbucks despite there being over 5 in my neighborhood.
damn so close
McDonald's coffee is my choice.
Yes, hanging out with a corporate giant, that’s cozy!
I support home grown coffee shops. Wonderful ☕ coffee at less than half the price of Suck Butts coffe.
Screw Starbucks. I say.
*How ChannelNewsAsia nearly collapsed*
I dunno, my guess is charging 3x what everyone else is for basically extremely burnt coffee?
ps there's more Tim Hortons chains around then there is starbucks ... I'm 45 minutes away from Toronto and can count 20 Timmy's
to 1 Starbucks I see
Its 80 billion US dollar now in 2021.
Wawa coffee is best and meets consumers prices and it's affordable
Starbucks - for people who don't really like coffee
too much comp on hotwater shop uk
This was awesome to watch! Very interesting.. Good o'l Howard aye..! (narrator lady... 'Alibaaabaaaa')
also, looks like a lot of "Fortune 500 arm chair CEO's".. on here commenting about what what they have no clue about.. LOL!!
I absolutely do love Starbucks but I do feel that what do they give me back
omg...
