  • Cashless payments are on the rise. They are fast, easy and convenient. Worldwide, cashless transactions have become the norm.
But Germany’s central bank and government are still clinging on to cash. Can they stop the move towards a cashless society? Our documentary shows who is behind the worldwide anti-cash lobby. Banks want to get rid of coins and bills for cost reasons, and politicians think less cash will cut the rug out from under criminals and terrorists. Central bankers want to abolish cash because it would make it easier for them to enforce negative interest rates. And digital payment companies like Paypal or Visa simply want to profit from money transactions and collect as much financial data about consumers as they can. Their aim is to gain complete control over our buying behavior. For example, the "Better than Cash Alliance" in New York is supported by financial corporations such as Visa or Mastercard. They say the more people that are integrated into the international financial system, the more growth and jobs it will promote. But as our financial behavior becomes more and more transparent, states are also using payment data to find out more about us. The ordinary citizen’s view of cash as a store of value, independent of third party interests, is being increasingly ignored. But for them, cash is and will remain a symbol of freedom.

We experienced a big problem here in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. The island went into a blackout so no one could get their hands on cash and couldn't use their cards because the internet and cell phones also went offline. This is one thing that people don't take into consideration. A bank is not going to give you money if they can't access your account to see if you actually have that amount in your account and a store is not going to sell you something without cash if their card service is offline.

Cashless society means you can't control your own money. 100% of it is just debt you gave to the bank, that can use it however it sees fit.

@G Espania Sheeple are unbelievably gullible and lazy. Anyone who does their home work can see through this. Fractional Reserve banking in and of itself is a corrupt system and we tolerate it. But that wasn't enough for TPTB so they stopped backing currency with gold (what does that tell you?). Now they are preparing the younger generation for the next step. It's not an accident that you're asked "Do you have a chip?" when using a card (so you'll say to yourself "I have a chip" over and over until you think nothing of it). They are simply waiting for the older generation (most of the resistance) to die off before implementing it (making it less trouble to do so).
Well, guess what. Chip implants are next. The real reason: In case someone "bad mouths" TPTB their chip will simply be turned off (you will have a "social credit" score - points removed for jay walking or whatever - where your rights are infringed as a means to make you comply, China is already doing this). Once your chip is deactivated you won't be able to purchase a stick of gum.

    • @vivellaz

That is so interesting that they decline cash. I hope that never happens in South Africa where I live. Here we do use ATM machines and pay by card in supermarkets, but many use cash. We can also withdraw our cash from our own banks at the cashier where we pay for our groceries. It goes into the same card machine and is just a withdrawal...many people here withdraw cash at the supermarket instead of having to go to the ATM or bank. We can even pay for our water & rates or telephone bill at the cashier in the supermarket. I pay for parking in shopping centres, with cash into a machine, or by card. I doubt if we would become a cashless society here as people would probably protest, especially the low income earners, as you say.

Using digital puts you at the mercy of the bank. How many times have you heard stories of people coming home from a holiday to see that their purchases while on holiday have the most outrageous exchange rates attached to those purchases? This suits the banks as there is now NO competition! This also allows the banks to monitor everything you buy, where you buy it from, and destroys your privacy. The interest on card purchases is absolute daylight robbery. Banks should be classified and criminal enterprises.

Second , if your money is the water coming out of the tap , but you do not control the tap.....Guess what , it could be turned off at any time , and you could be denied access to your money. Remember the Golden Rule......those that have the gold , rule.

In many banks they charge you "administrative/service fees" even for debit cards and accounts, which is ridiculous. Its our money in their "virtual" account and you have to pay, for what? This is a robbery. And in Sweden the govt want to watch everything you do because its a welfare state where big brother provides, but also expects tax back. I do not want to live in a world where I have to pay to use my own hard earned money. The other aspect is lack of freedom, they can track everything you buy, what you like, the money you spend and create a data profile on you. Which I never agreed on. I miss the days of cash... I hope it doesn't end

It's important to note that some countries generate an enormous amount of money through "Seigniorage" (the profit that a government makes by producing physical money when their currency is highly desirable). For countries where seigniorage is significant, it's very unlikely that they'll ever do away with cash.
The US government for example makes billions of dollars a year by making and distributing physical money. It's pretty hard to argue that they will ever want to give that up.
