It may have been decades since new episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, or its spin-off Mayberry RFD have come our way, but The Andy Griffith Show has remained in syndication ever since - and honestly has done a lot better in reruns than it ever did during it's initial. Because of this, it almost feels as if Mayberry is forever immortalized in our collective consciousness. But even though it certainly feels like the magic that is The Andy Griffith Show has never ended - and let's be honest, it hasn't - the series itself actually does have a real ending.
The factors that played a part in the show's cancellation were less about its ratings and more about how Andy Griffith, the series titular star, had grown tired of wearing his sheriff's badge. He was more than ready to leave Mayberry behind and set out on a new chapter of his career. While that might be oversimplifying things a bit, it's true that he had already devoted much of his life to being Opie's dad and if he stuck any longer, it was becoming increasingly unlikely that viewers would be open to seeing him in any other role. Typecasting is a major problem for television stars. Once the public has you pegged as one particular character, it's almost impossible to shed that persona.
Even though Andy's desire to leave played a large part in the series end, it wasn't the only reason why the iconic show eventually came to a close. Join Facts Verse as we explore some of the other reasons why The Andy Griffith Show was inevitably scrapped. In the process, we'll also delve into some of its behind-the-scenes secrets.
From Don Knott's departure to Andy's issues with some of the series key components, there were numerous reasons why The Andy Griffith Show had to end. Do we wish it lasted a bit longer than 8 seasons? Of course, we do! But the eight seasons that we were treated to were nothing short of sitcom gold!

I loved the guitar player from the first season, but hate the way its cut on some channels. The best scene was when Opie kicked the bandleader and said he wasn't sorry when Andy tried to apologize.
.
What kind of content?
Actual facts. Not this scene took this show off the air.
I watch Andy Griffith every day. When all other programming fails, there's Andy Griffith. Good, clean program
Me-too! I watch it daily along with Gomer Pyle that is next on the program Channel Me-TV. In those days the American people basically respected the law and the Integrity that it stood for!
Yes. Great show.
Me too!
@@robertakiszer4096showed great values that no longer exist
I loved most of them. Hard to find a favorite. When Barney left it was not the same. I will always watch it over and over. If we had more of that life today we would be better off in this country.
Precisely…Well said…almost makes You wish you could live there.
You can relive Mayberry by visiting Mt Airy North Carolina. The diner, Floyd's barber shop and the squad car are all there. About a mile out of town is Wallys filling Station and next door is THE actual courthouse with the 2 jail cells in it. Every time we drive to Florida we stop downtown to visit and get a homemade pie from Miss Angels pies. Last time we found the courthouse. On the outside, it doesn't look like anything you see on TV. It even looked closed but I pulled on the door and it opened. What a hoot! The inside is EXACTLY like what you see on TV!!!! A must see and its only 15 minutes off of route 77. Give it a try. It will definitely put a smile on your face! Also talk to the locals! They are very friendly and give good advice on where to go!
You can also stay in Andys childhood home!
Wow! That's awesome, thanks for telling us where we can visit.
Betty Lynn aka Thelma Lou barney girlfriend passed away recently in mount airy where she retired there and lived out her life
I would love to see this some day. On my bucket list now. Thank you
I'm thinking about moving there . I live about a hundred miles away in kingsport Tennessee.
The show was simply a lighthearted lesson in living, the world would be a better place if we could put a little Mayberry in our hearts,
I do not understand the comment that "The show has done a lot better in reruns than it did in its initial run". The show was a hit in its initial run.
Yes, that is 100% true, the show was HUGE in the 1960's, I think people don't understand "Population" growth also impacts viewer ratings and numbers. Between 1960 and 1968 which is the period the show ran, the population of the United States between 1960 and 1968 was just 179 to 199 million people lol. Today the population here in the states is a whopping 331 million lol, so of course more people watch the show today. It's a numbers game, more people, more views, it's pretty simple.
Amen! America loved this program and was sad to see it go after eight seasons
I’ve always loved this show! Watching it always relaxes me and I get in a better mood. It’s hard to think of my favorite, but I will say my top five episodes would be Mr. Mcbeeve, man in a hurry, Opie‘s charity, runaway kid (not sure if I said the title correctly), and the one when Andy helps the salesman to get a proper structure in the vacant lot next to the grumpy old man’s store. There’s a lot of great tidbits through out the whole show! When Barney left and it changed to color instead of black and white it definitely lost its magic in my opinion.
Thanks for watching!
My FAVORITE skit is Barney claiming to have memorized the Preamble To The Constitution from when he was a kid. I've seen it a hundred times and it cracks me up every time.
Great skit... notice how Barney's hair is neat and then messed up.
I always crack up when ol' Barney says something like, "You have to be pretty efficient in the use of firearms. Y'see, we are highly trained professionals here, and we cannot tolerate the incorrect use of firearms. Of course, I'm one of the most highly trained professionals in the field of police work (Barney accidentally shoots the floor). AAAACK! Now, I did that for an important reason. I just did that to show you all what can go wrong if you're not cautious enough." Don Knotts was so comical.🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I wouldn't say it ended abruptly. It lasted for 8 years with Andy being slowly phased away so Ken Berry can take over in Mayberry R.F.D.
Thanks for watching!
I was only 3 when it ended, but my family continued watching Mayberry RFD and the daytime reruns mornings on CBS (I had an indulgent grandmother who kept me and loved Andy Griffith and Lucy, and let me watch their reruns after Captain Kangaroo, while I was still preschool).Later on I read that the Andy Griffith Show was the #1 show in the US in the 1967-'68 season, that Andy wanted to leave and do other things, and I guess he decided to go out on top after 8 seasons.I do like the way they introduced Sam to the audience gradually,I think it helped in the transition from Andy.Favorite Episode:"Man In A Hurry"
That's interesting information about the show.
Mayberry RFD was NOT a good show.
One of my favorite ones was the traveler whose car broke down outside of town. While its was towed in he went to Andys house to eat. He tried to use the phone but the Middenbright sisters had the line tied up for hours. I understand that the actor that played the traveler won an emmy award for his part. I believe his name was Robert Emhardt.
I think that was the mayor, great episode though one of my top picks for sure
I watch the show pretty much every day. In a couple of interviews with Griffith and Knotts in later years, when the show first started, Griffith was supposed to have been the funny man a bumbling sheriff, but Griffith realized after the first episode with Knotts that he needed to step aside and let Knotts do his thing and he needed to be the straight man. Kudos to Griffith for putting his ego aside for the sake of the show. In an interview with Andy Griffith, he stated the reason Knotts left the show is that the network was canceling the show after 5 seasons, but he was willing to keep it going so I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between. He knew Knotts had been offered several movie opportunities and advised Knotts to take them since negotiations to continue the show was not likely. In an interview with Jesse Don Knotts, Knotts stated he loathed the name Jesse, and that Griffith would call him Jesse all the time because he knew Don hated that name. Knotts said Griffith is the only one that ever got away with it do to the respect and friendship he had for Griffith. In an interview with Griffith, he admitted that when Knotts left the show, he and Knotts would talk on the phone at least a couple of times a week and would often visit each other when they were not working. When Knotts feel ill, he said he went to the hospital to visit Knotts when Knotts was on his death bed, he said Knotts was pretty much out of it from all the drugs to keep Knotts comfortable. He said he sat down next to the bed and held Knott's hand and said Jesse it's Andy he said a big smile came across Knotts face. No truer friendship
Ernest T Bass courting was my favorite.
You ain't seen the last of Earnest T Bass
All the episodes were good, for a while...when Don Knott's left the show it was never the same and I really didn't watch as much of it after "Barney" left the show. You are right about that theme song, can still remember it in my head today... it's become a permanent part of my anatomy.
Thanks for watching!
Still feels like a dream each day I think of the fact that real flips still exist ☝️ made the difference. He is awesome
I enjoyed them all, but the episode that Aunt Bee came back and Andy and the little fellow was trying to make a mess so Aunt Bee felt that she was needed.
Just a little after thought from my previous comment about The Andy Griffith Show! If you want to see an awesome performance that should have gotten an Academy Award for Andy Griffith; watch the movie" A face in the Crowd" !!! This was filmed before The Andy Griffith Show when he was very young! He is truly a gifted actor!
This documentary was a straightforward, comprehensive summary of a great TV series that has sadly come and gone! I listen to it Faithfully; Monday through Friday on Me TV along with the Gomer Pyle show that is next on the program! With all that is going on in this decade with the covid lockdown, political riots and protests that are burning City buildings, destroying people's hard-earned businesses and looting and hurting and harming other innocent people; throwing bricks at police officers; judges that are paid off by the evildoers to release them back into the community; gross inflation and open borders that allowed drug cartels, human traffickers and disease infected people to infiltrate America. It is such a joy to escape today's reality and watch these old TV shows that bring light-hearted laughter, joy and wonderful heart felt memories of how America Used to be.💝😃
City slickers are not necessarily more educated farmers often know how to repair their own plumbing, tractors and cars and do their own house and barn repair. How many city people can do that?
Me
My Mom!
It always bothere3d me that they presented Gomber as a bafoon. The Man took apart... then rebuilt a car!!! He was no bafoon!
Oh there’s so many….the Pickle tasting contest….the one where Barney buys a lemon of a used car….the one where Barbara Eden comes into town as a manicurist. Yeah there’s a lot classic episodes of this series. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Very true. Barbara Eden was a beauty in that episode!
And it is still a relief from this modern world. I watch it weekly and wish things were still like the 50's.
My favorite is the one where the dude comes to town and knows everyone but they don't know him.
That's my favorite too.
I simply cannot pick a favorite from so many wonderful ones. I do have a favorite line from the show though. Aunt Bea sent soup by Andy and Barney while Emma was "bedridden" because the new druggist would not give her her medicine (which turned out to be a placebo) without a prescription. When Emma was sharing with Andy and Barney about all the food she had been given, Andy said, "Ain't it wonderful how people help a body in a time of need?" I have used that line in many similar situations.
No worries, we definitely understand! Thank you for sharing this 💕
Nice summary of a great TV show. It was included on Amazon Prime up until today so we got to watch it while it was free. Hard to pick a best episode. Here are a few: the very first episode, the episode with the sinking canoe, the episode where Elly comes to town and Emma gets "sick" along with a couple of other episodes with Elly, the episode when Opie gets all As, the episode where Opie kills a bird with his slingshot, the first two episodes when Andy gets a British butler, the episode Barney Gets His Man, the high school reunion episodes, the episode where Opie stands up to bully, the episode where Floyd is the Gay Bachelor, the one where Barney "saves" Andy in a cave rock slide, the episode with the seance, the episode with Dolly the milk horse, and there are others that were very good.
A bird was killed?! That's horrible! God bless the bird!🙏 I like animals!
A British butler? I like British people!
A gay bachelor?
My favorite episode was...Man in a hurry. Great Life Lesson. My favorite characters...All three of the Fun Girls. Nothing got my pulse zooming more than Daphnes....Hello Doll.
the episode when Barbara eden came to town, she was absolutely beautiful and natural
She was indeed!
Interesting! Thank you for posting!
Loved this show and I still watch
We're glad to know that you still watch and love the show! Which episode is your favorite?
i really do love this show the shows now is not good as the old shows
For me, the loss of Don Knotts and *sigh* colour
👍
Aww man he’s my fav character
My favorite episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are "Dinner at Eight" and The Christmas Story.
I don't know why it never airs on tv. They only run it to Season 5 but Direct TV says, it's from Season 7
Anyway, enjoyed your program. thanks for the info. You answered a question I had just commented about. ❤
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
Was "Dinner at 8" the spaghetti episode where Andy ended up eating 3 spaghetti dinners only to come home to Aunt Bea making spaghetti?🤢🤮 LoL
My 2 favorite episodes involved the 2 ladies who wanted to have fun with Andy & Barney. Andy's date spoke in an extremely low voice & called Andy "Doll". The other kept calling Barney "Bernie".
I'll never forget THAT episode with THAT scene. I thought this can't be real. They'll never get away with this! They didn't. It was canceled immediately, never to return. Really, they clearly should have known better.
why does Gomer go from an opera singer in one episode, then to tone-deaf when he enlists in the marines, then to an opera singer again when he sings the impossible dream??
BEST SHOW EVER...BAR NONE. BEST EPISODE...MAN IN A HURRY. NAUGHTIEST EPISODES...THE FUN GIRLS. HEY DOLL!!! OH BURNEY!!!😎📿🙏📿🙏📿
The best episodes were the ones that had a little serious drama mixed in, Such as "Mr. McBeevee" and "Lawman Barney".
Also "Opie the birdman"
There wasn't any one scene that ended the show.
I agree. I don't know why people try making a scandal out of nothing. Andy would NOT approve.
I found the first two seasons at a garage sale. I bought the rest off of Amazon. I watch the DVD’s a lot. Most tv now is just trash.
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Video!
Thanks for watching!
My favorite episodes are when Barney buys a car and also the haunted house episode. I only watch the Don Knots years now. I don't watch any of the episodes made after Don Knots left. That special something this show had was no longer there for me. Don was a treasure.
🐟🐳 BAIT AND SWITCH 🐳🐟
This channel and its taglines
Don't like misleading titles. Doesn't make me want to watch your channel.
Oh big time witch makes it easier not to prescribe
Would love to see this shows some back🙏🙏🐨🦘🇦🇺💝
The narrator makes this sound so grim. The show lasted three more seasons after Don Knott's left before finally coming to an end in 1968,it just ran it's course that's all,Ron Howard was going on fifteen and it was just time to end it,but the show did produce a spin off with Mayberry RFD which had the same plot of the father and son relationship between Sam and Mike but still didn't capture the chemistry of Andy and Opie.
Really shocked!!! What a bummer!!!
I love the Pickle Story!
Great show. I'd still be watching it if it were still on. At least I can, and do, watch the reruns.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
The 'Pickle' episode was my favorite by far. Don't remember the official title of it, but it was the one that I laughed at the most, and and still do, to this day.
If I had an extended hospital stay, I would take marathons of LITB, TAGS (1st 5 seasons only), and GP, USMC for get-better medicine.
My favorite episodes was the goat that was suppose to eat the dynomite and the Christmas episode with Mr. Weaver
I love em all but like the episodes with a supernatural theme, like "The Haunted House" "3 Wishes for Opie" "Divorce Mountain Style" not sure of the title on that last one or if that's right? Also "Up In Barney's Room"
and "The Shoplifters" just off the top of my head.
Wow no one told me this until you came in thanks bro 😅
You're very much welcome! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
@@FactsVerse well I loved the episode where opie runs away
Perhaps the episode where Andy persuaded Ben Weaver to buy out Bert Miller's stock of goods is the one I liked most.
My second favorite episode was the Opie’s Newspaper episode !!!
I remember listening to an interview on the radio that featured GEORGE LINDSEY A.K.A. GOOBER where the talk show host had asked George why did the show come to an end when it did ,and he responded by saying that the script writers simply ran out of ideas for new episodes .
So they and the producers figured that was a sign that it was time to just call it quits re: T.A.G.S. Now that's what Mr. G. Lindsey said .Whether he was right or wrong l don't know , but that was the response he gave the interviewer .
Thanks for watching!
Andy once said in an interview that he was burned out and tired. After 8 years working 6 days a week 12 or more hours a week he knew when it was time to call it quits. Griffith had said that he would show up on set and he just couldn't remember his lines. Plus his marriage to Barbara wasn't going too well. They eventually divorced in 1972. The show when it left the air was still in the top 10 in ratings. Not too many shows recently have left the air and them being in the top 10. But the Andy Griffith Show was one of them.
My favorite episodes were the ones with Ernest T & The Darlings. I loved to listen to the Darlings sing. Ernest T was just a nut, like Barney said. That made it so funny. When Bristol Darling wants to marry Aunt Bea, that's a good one , he kidnapped her, she has the boys move out all the furniture, & she has them really clean. She teaches them manners , no yelling at the table, no elbows on the table it's hilarious 😆🤣😂
He starred in Matlock since and guest starred on other shows.
My favorite Andy Griffith show is Barney's first car
My favourite was Opie’s three wishes
There was no one scene that toke it off, it was what you said at the beginning.
The guitar Player and the Darlings
Love those fun girls. "Mr. Fix-it!"
Thanks for watching!
Great show
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Hmmn... honestly i love them all, but when barney buys his first car probably
I always thought it was the Gomer and Goobers little incident in the back of Wallys gas station..where Gomer lived..and entertained his male suitors.😮
My dog just cried when the fishing hole whistle song came on if you whistled it she cried
I grew up in a town.....very similar to Mayberry....
Florence, South Carolina.
I've never seen "The Andy Griffith Show", but saw the trailers. Don Knotts is familiar. I've seen him in some movies!
You uploaded this video on my birthday!🎂
Good day, if you haven't seen it, "The Incredible Mr. Lippant" is a Fantastic Don Knotts movie. I haven't watched it foe years, but he some how falls into the water and turns into a fish, (animated of course), that looks like Knotts. Quite a fun and funny movie 😃
@@Mike-bx4ww Oooo! I want to check it out! Thanks for letting me know! I love cartoons!
@@mojo3318 It is great and Happy B-Day 👌 🎂 😃
@@Mike-bx4ww Thank you!🙂
I was under the impression that the Andy Griffith show wasn't CANCELLED, but that it just stopped, and let Mayberry RFD take its place ... .
Set grounds filled with vampires, city-stompers, and danger. All to immortalize the iconic father of the 60's who is abusive to his son and always spiting people
The haunted house
I have never seen Andy's & Helen's wedding. Would love to.
Season 1, episode 1 of Mayberry RFD was the wedding. The wedding scene only lasted about 5 minutes, nothing big but was glad that they finally married.
💯💯💯
Thanks for watching!
Favorite episode is Dinner at 8!
My favorite episode was the one about the gold truck coming through Mayberry.
Ernest T Bass only appeared in five episodes, but I thought he was so funny. Howard Morris who played him was very talented in many ways.
He also played the TV repairman that Barney brings out to the lake about Helen's TV, when Andy and Helen are trying to have a quiet day alone.
His voice was used on The Leonard Blush radio show as the host i believe@@Ahirufan1
Like many other folks, my favorite episode was the one where they have to raise and protect the baby birds.
"A season which sees the end of ruralties like Beverly Hillbillies,Green Acres,Mayberry RFD and Hee-Haw can't be all bad."-TV GUIDE critic Cleveland Amory
Favorite - Citizens Arrest.
I loved the episode with The Darlings family.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the spinoff, Gomer Pyle, USMC.
My favorite episode is the one about Aunt Bee making pickles
Thanks for watching!
My favorite still this day is when Aunt Bea canning her pickles.
“The Incredible Mr. Limpet” lead me to this video
Slow and Low!
My favorite episode was The Pickle Story !!!
❤️❤️
Check out the book called The Boys by Ron Howard and Clint Howard. Lots of good anecdotes about this show.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing this. We'll check the book 👍
The pickles, Hottie Snitch, the rock, the bookie.
Favorite was the Christmas episode
I Love The Episodes with Ms. Emma Brand......
UNCLE OLLIE!!
The title is misleading.
The pickle episode or the used car so funny great show
Barney's uniform is my favorite episode
We vividly remember that episode too! Thank you for bringing back memories. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Betty Lynn aka Thelma Lou barneys girlfriend who recently passed away lived in mount airy n.c. she retired there from the acting and is buried there now

Andy Saves Barney’s Morale
Thanks for watching!
The Christmas show.
Thanks for watching!
My favorite episode was Aunt Bea's pickles. 😝
Andy was tired of doing it and wanted to move on to new adventures
I like when Barney buys his own car and I like when Andy goes to visit Barney at Raleigh and helps Barney solve the supermarket burglaries And the haunted house caper and the spoiled rich kid with the new bike and wallies gas station being robbed at night with the guy hiding in the car trunk
Thanks for watching!
