- Return to Mayberry is a feature-length romantic comedy based on two of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s: The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. The film resurrected the simple folksy life of Mayberry, 18 years after The Andy Griffith Show went off the air on April 1, 1968. While the shows aired on CBS, the film Return to Mayberry was broadcast on NBC on April 13, 1986, with 16 of the original cast members, including Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Ron Howard, Howard Morris, and Jim Nabobs and George Lindsey, reprising their roles. The film was directed by Bob Sweeney, who had directed 80 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and it was written by Harvey Bullock and Everett Greenbaum who had actively written for the same show. The film became the most-watched film of 1986, getting enough ratings to claim a spot on the 'Top Ten Movies of All Time.' The film also revied Andy Griffith's career and served as the series finale of The Andy Griffith Show as no new episodes were created or released after the broadcasting of this reunion film.
In this video, we take a trip down the memory lane and visit some of our favorite characters from The Andy Griffith Show but more importantly, we highlight the 9 things you failed to notice in the reunion film Return to Mayberry. So, hit the play button and enjoy.

At 70 yrs old I grew up watching Andy Griffith as well. Just good down home fun, no cussing just family fun.
Amen 🙏🏻 to that my friend, never ever do I get tired of watching Andy Griffith it’s timeless, a real solid piece of Americana 🇺🇸 GOD BLESS 😇
There are still shows like that. But no one watches them much...
One comment about the two stars I met! I was born in 1963 and I do believe my Mom must of had the TV on as she gave birth to me! I’ve watched the show my entire life! I had the great honor of meeting Betty Lynn and Jim Nabors! Two of the kindest people I’ve ever met! They are both gone now but I was overjoyed by meeting them both! I still at the age of 60, still watch the show everyday
I was Born in 1932 the age is getting to myl oldi mindi
Me too January 63
I'm 65 I grew up watching Andy Griffith show and I can never get enough. Even though I've watched an episode 20 times I'll watch it again. I love the show
i'm 65 too, wouldn't be great to wave a magic wand and make the world like it was then?
Jay Jackson you can say that again. I feel sorry for younger people, they don't know how great it was back then.
ME too. I'm 65 as well and the shows never get old. Probably the best show ever on TV.
@@triples4good I am also 65 and wish they were still making shows like the Andy Griffith show today.
Rich Dittus sadly I don't think they can in the current social climate.
My parents lived near Los Olivos when this film was shot. I visited the set twice. The first day was a non-shooting Sunday. As I was heading to my car a voice called out, "Good Mornin'". It was Jim Nabors. I went back the following Tuesday with friends and they were shooting the rally scene and the closing shot lowering the flag. I hot to see the whole cast and Andy had a nice conversation with my friends. A great experience!
Kathy Fraley
What an awesome memory 🥰
Wow, what an amazing experience.
Los Olivos and Santa Ynez are cute little towns. We go there often. Have a shot of me by the flagpole.
There will never be another Mayberry when just about all the actors are gone they are sadly missed.....RIP to all that made the show and ones that left us.... To the ones that are still with us, thanks for all the great acting and enjoyment you brought to our lives.....Thanks
Watching Return to Mayberry this afternoon(5/7/23 I became very emotional .. was AWESOME to see them after 20 years. The all still had the look they had in the series , the mannerisms & the tone of their voices ..Thank you for producing this “ Trip Down Memory Lane” It warmed my heart ❣️👏😊. Shirley Ann DeCarlo Helems
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
My life mimicked this show. I went to live with my grandparents at the age of four that would have been in 1964 My grandfather was the chief of police in our small town and yes I spent every moment possible at the station. I have watched every episode at least ten times and still watch it to this day. 👍👍
Awesome 😀
Seems like an ideal childhood
I can never get enough of the Andy Griffith Show! I have always loved it Barney Fife is my hero lol!
After Barney left that was the beginning of the end of that show, he was a key character.
Hi
I would love to see a show like this come back to television! We need some clean wholesome choices to watch.
Yes! My husband and I watch the reruns every day, even though we've seen them all. We often say we want to go back to that time in history.
@Russell Gerdes yes! Exactly. I like the advances that have come about, but I love the wholesome lifestyle and simple way of life. People went out of their way to be kind, and help their neighbors. Now we're lucky if we know our neighbors......lol
Vicki Ostler: I would to Vicki. Television makers today can’t or want make clean tv for the family to watch. TV today my st have Sex, Vilance, Dirty Language. Then there is the reboots, no imagination to film something new they have to reboot something that made money in the past.
Well you’ll get your wishes. Hoke Howells (who played Dud Wash), sons and Ronny Schells son are making a movie called Mayberry Man. And there will be some originals that were in the show also in this movie, also Karen Knotts and Andy’s real life daughter! This will be a hoot and holler of a good time and bring you back a little of what your asking for!
@@steel4real760 wow!! Will it be a tv movie or theater release? Any idea on when we should potentially be able to see it? I'm excited! I know my husband and I will watch it. Thanks so much for the info!!
One more fun fact!
“Floyd Lawson - the barber” (Howard McNear) had a stroke in 1963 that left him with near paralysis on the left side of his body and Andy Griffith told him they would work around his paralysis so he wouldn’t quit getting a paycheck. That’s why he would be sitting in the barbers chair reading the paper or he would be sitting on the bench outside of the barbershop reading a newspaper. What a classy thing to do. ❤️
And this was also at the insistence of Andy Griffith. He was a class act and stood up for the other actors. I want to say i heard there were conversations about Floyd's character being written off the show, or recasting the part, but Andy said "no howard, no me". Don't know if that was true or not, but it would make sense. Shows if the time were not really known to make accomodations for a disability
Class act ???? He cheated on his first wife with the actress who played Helen Crump. I guess it's how you defy class.
Black Buick
You are correct! I totally forgot about that. Andy told him his job was waiting when he was ready. He never took him off the books either.
@@MrWosclifton i didn't say he was class in his personal life now did i? For all we know his wife could have been a c*nt and used sex as a weapon... women foolishly think that men get married to give up sex, and then use sex as a weapon. That always works out real good.
My reference was to him as an actor. It was uncommon for actors to watch out for another at the time.
It was a very generous thing to do. It reminds me of the accommodations the producers of Bewitched did for Dick York’s physical problems.
I can never get enough of the Andy Griffith Show. Yes, we need a comeback of this series.
You can't top that one.
@@TheShospitali Very True
Not possible because we've lost all of these wonderful actors/actresses! Only Opie is still with us!
everyone is dead
@@keithsw2566 Yes, except for Opie, they are all gone -- a sad fact.
I can’t believe you didn’t talk about Ernest T in return to Mayberry.
also the Darlings
Good Point, seem like everyone knew a Ernest T Bass or someone like Ernest T Bass. He was a character you could identify with somebody in your home town that everyone knew. As well as many of the other characters in Mayberry.
Omg I used to watch it every day. It was so funny, pure not a single cursing. I love it. Every time I'll be watching it, I would say omg I would love to live in a place like that. I love it.
One of the greatest shows to ever air on television!
Never missed an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. I liked the original show most of all. It always left me with a great feeling.
Hello
"Citizen's Arrest! Citizen's Arrest!"
One of the very best TV shows, EVER!!
This was one of my most favorite shows back then AND now‼️‼️
If they could have done more I am all for it. To bad so many of the actors have passed. Thank you for great times.
Beverly Hillbillies was not saved in the "rural purge." It went off too. The grittiness you're thinking of were new topical shows like All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, and MASH.
My mom hated those shows. Taken away from the small hometown that everybody knew & loved. Mayberry sort of reminded you of what everybody's small hometown once was where most everyone knew who everybody was.
No one ever called her Auntie, always Aunt Bea. George Lindsey was a regular cast member on Hee Haw and played Goober on that show too. Did anybody else get nervous when Barney closed the side crane on his revolver with the muzzle pointed at Andy? Especially because of Barney's longtime history with Accidental Discharges.
Yes, and pronounced like the insect, not AUNT, let alone Auntie...
The accidental discharge point is even more relevant now.
George Lindsey was also a star quarterback for the University of North Alabama.
It’s spelled Bee.
Aunt is pronounced as 'ant' and even 'aint' Bee. A lot of southern folks pronounce aunt this way..all of my kinfolk say it as explained above. 🙂
You could have also mentioned that Otis quit drinking and was now ran an ice cream truck
One of the best shows ever. We need more shows like this on today. NO CUSSING, SEX AND ALL THAT KILLING.
Thanks for watching, Teresa!
Apparently you haven't researched the Rural Purge well enough. Beverly Hillbillies was ones of the shows CANCELLED, along with Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. You made it sound like Mayberry RFD got cancelled in favor of keeping Beverly Hillbillies on the air. That's not true.
Spot on. If you want to mention the replacements, CBS in particular went with more game shows (including The New Price is Right), and shows in the style of All in the Family and the Mary Taylor Moore Show. The desire for more contemporary shows also paved the way for M*A*S*H in 1972. The backlash from the Rural Purge caused the network to give The Waltons a chance (although they expected it to fail and initially scheduled it in a death slot), which in turn lead to other shows such as Little House on the Prairie and Eight is Enough.
When the waltons came on cbs filp Wilson show on NBC was canceled do to low ratings.
also cancelled along with the rest was Hogans Heroes
And The Lawrence Welk Show on ABC.
Mayberry RFD should have never been on the air in the first place. Just trying to milk the Andy Griffith Show franchise until the tit dried up. Ken Berry may have had talent (i guess), but he stuck out like a sore thumb and never seemed, well, "right" in the role. Ken Berry in "Mama's Family" was even worse. How demasculinizing of a role playing a complete bumbling idiot with a butt ugly spouse...
Does anyone remember in the last few seconds of the pilot of " The Andy Griffith Show "
we found out Barney and Andy are related. Just at the close of the show Barney says
' Thanks cousin Ange ".
Yes.
Yes.
the first episode
In later episodes they changed it so that they were just friends that went to school together.
*The very early seasons of the Andy Griffith show; Barney Fife used to say cousin Andy all the time, but as the show aged, their being cousins were faded out. It was childhood best friends, and classmates.*
George Lindsey, aka Goober, grew up in my daddy’s home town in Alabama. They were friends and when my father passed away in 1989, he sent his condolences and a massive funeral wreath with a touching card.
Loved the movie, I especially loved that Otis got sober, and made a success of his life😃
Selling ice cream :).
Yeah, Otis getting sober was just hilarious.
Another reason that Bavier and Donohue did not come back was because they didn't get along with Griffith. However Bavier, just before she died, got together with Andy and they made amends.
Frances was also battling cancer while the movie was being filmed.
Another Easter egg: When Andy 1st takes a look at Main Street at the beginning of the film, you can see that Emmett's fix it shop is still right next to the courthouse!
In these times of trouble that we are in today I say this with tears in my eyes. America needs America's children need, the Andy Griffin show. The lessons in the morals that taught us as children has unfortunately died. We need shows like this and they are welcomed whether Hollywood thinks so or not!
George appeared as Goober on "Hee Haw".
I just can't stop watching the reruns. Having a big crush on Andy LOL didn't help matters much. I miss this show so much. They did a sublime job in each and every one of their parts.
Warm-hearted and friendly "simpletons" ? Warm-hearted and friendly "folks who shared a love for one another" sounds better !
I totally agree Bobby! I can’t believe he used that word. A “simpleton” (according to Google) is a foolish or gullible person…….or a person lacking in common sense. As one who is ALSO from a very small town in the south, I take offense at that. It’s rude!! Just because people are from a small southern town does NOT make them stupid.
It definitely left me wanting more! However there can never be another Mayberry
It exists in real life, sort of, in Mt. Airy NC, where Andy grew up. Mayberry doesn’t mimic Mt. Airy exactly, but was the basic inspiration for Mayberry. Just went and must say the Squad car tour was excellent
One more fact:This was the only time that Barney and Howard Sprague interacted with each other. They never did on the original series or on Mayberry RFD.
@Black Buick Howard never appeared in any of Don Knott's guest apperances during the last three seasons of "The Andy Griffith Show" (Howard was introduced in season 6,) They did both appear in the first episode of "Mayberry RFD" at Andy and Helen's wedding, but did not have any interaction with each other.(Sam,Emmett,Howard, and Goober had a laugh about Barney's behaviour as best man during the show's epilogue, however.)
I've never actually seen the film, but having lived in Los Olivos for so long, it's something we all know about and are proud of! We even have "Mayberry 1986" carved into the pavement near the park. Nice to see some shots from the film of our town! Thanks!
Does Los Olivos mean the olives?
We need clean shows like this back on t.v. and family values
You are so right, Andy Griffith show is truly a masterpiece, I will always watch it I love the town of Mayberry and it’s people, truly timeless.
Amen to that
Amen!
Amen to that!! God, I despise 2021.
@@roldangonzalez7360 I live in NC and our little mountain town is a lot like Mayberry
My boyfriend's daughter and I were talking about how we wish we could go to Mayberry to live. What a great place to live. Thanks for video
Me too
We would be besties!! Lol Mayberry ftw!!
Hi
Gomer never intended to go to medical school. That was a joke that Andy made in the episode "Man in a Hurry."
Though I was young when the series was airing, I can still remember sitting with my mom and watching it. When "Return To Mayberry" aired, I remember getting a little excited and calling my mother to let her know it was a thing. That might have been one of the best evenings I've ever had, laughing over a show both of us had enjoyed!
Most people who are living in North Carolina knows exactly where Mayberry is. It's in the town of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. It's where there is a Andy Griffith museum. This is Andy's hometown where he grew up. He also taught school in the country where I live in Goldsboro and the county seat is Wayne County. He taught school at Goldsboro High School. The Andy Griffith show was and still is a great show. I wish we back in those days. How about you?
happy tears
Are you sure? Because Andy was always, "Going to Mt. Airy". For sure, Mt. Airy is a real place. I lived in Waynesville, NC for a while and am aware of it. True, that's where the museum is and I think 'Aunt Bee' retired to the area, for rea.!! They said she lived like a hermit and only spoke to Andy once after she left the show and moved there.
"Awnty Bea"? WTH? It's pronounced "Ant Bea" or "Ain't Bea."
Make sure to say it with a stupid shitty grin on your face too, and say something to the effect of "Ah Shore Do Loves me a slice of yor pie Ant Buhee"
And she pronounced her last name "Bave-ee-er.
One of the things that bothered me in Return to Mayberry was that the voice actor playing Aunt Bea sounded zero like her.
Nancy Montgomery I thought it sounded like her so much so I had to go look it up to make sure if it was or wasn't her. My mom even thought it sounded like her
@@tomekstrand1988 It is actually pronounced "Ba-vee-A
Just finished watching a couple of episodes on Me TV. Still great, fan forever.
"Ont Bea?" Andy never called her that.
John Ziemba: Her later years she was happy being a funky (and skanky) GILF......air it out all ready......🥴

I'm 65. I always loved watching "The Andy Griffith Show." I have all 8 seasons on dvds. In the first episode of the first season, Barney Fife calls Andy Taylor his cousin. It was a fun show to watch. I could pretend that I was there at the time period that it was shown.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse I enjoyed them all so it would be hard for me to choose just one.
I too 65 and I k ow shows by heart. It was an educational show as well as fun
I’m 24. Used to HATE when my dad would have this show on and we’d all be forced to watch it when I was a kid. In my teens though, I started to pay attention to the show more and realized that I loved it. I watch an episode of two almost everyday if I have the chance. I can’t thank my dad enough for making me watch this show. I feel like I have a really high sense of right and wrong because of this show. My favorite show of all time, no questions asked.
Aunt Bea - Frances Elizabeth Bavier - when she retired moved to Siler City, North Carolina, which was about 20 minutes where I lived in Pittsboro, NC. Both towns are located in the same county. Ms. Bavier was an interesting character in her final years. Though she wrote inspirational messages to fans, supported charities from her home, and even left money to the local police department, she was not liked by all her neighbors. One of my college friends grew up as her next-door neighbor. Crystal told me that it was very obvious that Ms. Bavier was a talented actress because she was nothing like Aunt Bea in her family's dealings with her. My great aunt, also, met her once at a charity event and any time it was mentioned all my great aunt would say, if she didn't change the subject, was "She was interesting, though not someone I would play cards with" with no further details. Don't get me wrong I am not saying she was a bad person, I just find the inconsistencies in her reputation humorous.
I have recorded every episode of the Andy Griffith Show. I watch it every morning while it records. And also Gomer Pile USMC love those two shows. Brings backs great memories of when I was a child.
I watch reruns of the show a lot. I never get tired of the show.
I turned 40 in ‘86 and still watch Andy on rerun, laughing at Barney’s antics.
9 Things we missed? How did you miss Andy delivering Opie’s baby in the backseat of a car and the Darlings arrival?

Great show and movie! Always want more of this show. Good wholesome viewing!
My favorite show...I still laughing every time I watch the show soooooooo funny...
Always great show never missed a show.
Just loved this show, have all the DVD’s.🥰
George Lindsay was still playing a variation of Goober on Hee Haw during this time period.
Thank you!
Did the character stay on until the very end? I vaguely remember when Hee Haw changed the style in the final season. By then, it was stuck on a low rated independent station in my market.
@@someguy23475 According to Wikipedia,he was on Hee Haw from 1972-1992.
@@someguy23475 I never did watch the final season, I'm not sure it was shown in the Seattle market. The final season that is.
So. What is the story behind the red circle around a piece of the chair Ron Howard is sitting in?

Beverly Hillbillies was also cancelled in the rural purge.
Sloppy writing/editing in these videos is distracting.

When i saw it as a teen on cable it felt right. It was like seeing old distant relatives that i haven't seen in years though the reruns were still playing i was whisked away of the thought that time passed. Lol
Just watched "Return to Mayberry" and I loved it. Funny moments and some that brought tears. Glad i was able to watch it on MeTv.
We're happy to know that you're a Return to Mayberry fan! Which episode appealed to you the most?
Got my driver's license this same week in 1986. Greatest Summer Ever. Arlene Golonka (RIP)was the most beautiful woman to ever appear on American television.
I watch this show everyday. Clean good fun. Simple times is what most of us wish would come back.
I definitely wanted more after return to mayberry. It was my introduction to the characters as a child and it wasn't until the early 90s that we got reruns of the Andy Griffith show here in Canada
I am sorry that I did not get to see the Return to Mayberry. Wish I had. I liked the shows The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D.
Also noticable is that Barney(Don Knotts) was bald in the movie. There was a scene in "Barney hosts a summit meeting", where after he and Andy are ran off by Mr. Cabe, Barney is seen at the office distressed and is rubbing his hair extensively. You could see, where Barney is going Bald.
Great show I love it I love the whole series it is a great show for the whole family
Andy Jr. suffered the same fate as Ron Howard's other on screen brother Chuck Cunningham.
Remember back in 1965, Barney quit the sheriff's dept. and moved to Raleigh to join their police dept and become a detective. The writers had him back in Mayberry as a deputy.
I cant watch return to mayberry enough....its a well written good bye. Ill always miss andy and barney. Even though they still show it in north carolina everyday to this day.

I grew up watching The Andy Griffith Show and live not far from Mount Airy and Greensboro N.C. But in Virginia.
Don Knotts was almost completely blind by this time, and as you watch the closing credits, you can see him take Andy's arm as they turn and walk up the street....
????? Wtf? How did he go on to do movies and Threes Company then?????
I just recently, for the first time ever got to see the reunion episode! As a life long fan I liked to fantasize about that loveable group of characters living in that perfect little small town. It was absolutely wonderful! If life could ever be so sweet and simple as that little program depicted....
Now it lives on and on. I just cannot remember what Opie's baby's name was. I wouldn't change a single thing. A precious part of history.
Ellie only appeared in series 1 (as a potential romantic involvement), and Ken Berry only at the end - so it is not surprising that those characters didn't appear. I was surprised that, since Helen and Andy brought their son back to be baptised in Mayberry RFD, I don't know how they forgot him. :)
Makes me think of evenings with my grandparents and the smell of grandma's real home brewed percolator coffee and homemade pies.
Did you know that Andy was given a choice after the success of the Return To Mayberry; to return as Sheriff Taylor or Matlock. He chose Matlock.
Hi
Nope I didn't know that interesting though I guess he was ready to move on.
A couple of items bothered me about this video. First of all, in your introductory picture, you show the corner of Ron Howard's chair circled, and you make no reference to that during the video. WTH, man! Also, your repeated requests to hit the like And subscribe buttons. We know what to do. Just show your material, and we 'll let you know whether or not we like it, or want to subscribe. Other RUclipsrs are guilty of these practices. Just show your stuff, and let us be the judges. Oh, and to answer your question: it left me wanting more.
HEAR! HEAR!
@@highlightedreply8838 Thank you.
Yeah what was the deal with the chair? Was it used on the original set. Nothing explained about it?
In the pilot or sometime during the early shows, Andy and Barney were identified as cousins. No time after that were they referred to as cousins but instead really close friends.
This show is so wholesome
I struggle with the identification of the denizens of Mayberry as "simpletons." One does not need advanced degrees to be complex thinkers or complex people. Barney Fife was extremely complex, as were many other characters.
One of my favorite all time lines: That partial explains it.
Love that show and this watch it every day
Small clarification: the original studios were not bulldozed in the 70's after Desilu sold out. Only the famous 40 Acres backlit area was sold off in parcels. The studios themselves are still there as the Culver Studios in Culver City, CA. Just down the street from Sony Picture Studios, which used to be MGM. Sadly, the famous MGM studios backlot is also gone, sold off in the 70's as well for development.
"Awntee Bee..." Missed that one.
