Now I won't make anyone believe I know enough about this lane of music to judge how original Carti is, but I'll give him this credit since many people like yourself say he is.
The music is still bad though. If he's the one making the beats I think he could be a dope producer, if not he has a good ear for these kinda beats. But he's too awful at rapping / singing or whatever you call wtf he does to give him any credit. Just my opinion ofc, feel free to enjoy this.

I saw so many people saying this same thing, so I actually went and checked out that song based off all the recommendations. All it did was confirm carti as one of the worst fucking musicians of all time. I got 40 seconds into that trash before I shut it off. Shit was giving me a fucking headache.

He (not just carti other artists do this) try to ape aspects of other genres without understanding what makes them great and it doesn't translate well to the music. Punk isn't just about sound or aesthetics, its an attitude, its politics, its a lifestyle. His new album felt like he listened to one punk band and decided to try the genre on like a costume

They can be more original, creative, more left field and not have their lyrics be sub par where you only stay for a vibe or the beat. They are definitely more interesting too. They can be more personal and still do drug bars, etc. Carti is below them in all aspects

the ppl that criticize his music, are usually ppl that try to compare it to current rap, or are just old heads that don’t understand that music is supposed to change over time. we’re eventually gonna hear some strange shit we never heard before, it’s inevitable. once you take it for what it IS instead of what you expect it to be, then you will be able to appreciate it. and that goes beyond music too

In Die Lit, Carti cuts out a unique space in hip-hop which really rides an aesthetic more than anything. The aesthetic is heavily built on punk commonalities; ignorance and general rebellion to arguably not-so-important things.
Personally, I go to Carti for his ability to fill "pockets" in the beats with his own sound - or ad-libs, sure. The way he does so is very natural, you kind of expect him to be there and when he does, it's just great. Furthermore, his delivery is purely nonchalant. It reinforces this ignorant vibe he so primarily champions. The contrast between his lower-key delivery and the goofy but banging production also reinforces this vibe in a way that I haven't really come across with another artist. It kinda makes you want to move and nod your head much like Big Quint, but then you hear his vocals come in then you tone it back a notch and realise you can't go too hard with it.. and it just provides this entrancing, "leaned out" feeling.
At this point you see why the minimalism in his production is so important, especially in this album (Die Lit). It is the main element that carries you along when you're caught in this state.
The key thing here, is that not everyone will be able to catch this vibe - this sounds ridiculous but I honestly don't know how else to describe it.

It's crazy, bc I only used to enjoy rap with bars and/or some lyrical meat to it that you could actually get good stuff out of (Milo, Danny Brown, Kendrick, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Early Kanye, MF DOOM, etc). But Carti changed my perception of what rap could be. I already know they aren't ab to like this, but Whole Lotta Red is amazing. Feel like Myke would actually enjoy it, especially the insanely aggressive tracks. Idk how he clicks, but when he clicks, golly. Honestly, I thought Cudi made the Metamorphosis song worse. It's about he sound of the words. I know this sounds stupid if you hate it, but I could write for a whole ab this, compare it to shit like some avant garde classical music and outsider music (and like when Kanye strains in his voice on songs like God Is), but that would be even more of a turn off to people that hate it so nvm. But I love what he did what his voice on this new album and I feel it will be more appreciated in due time, similar to Death Grips.
