My biggest mistake was when I first got a navara d40. Fitted it with mud tyres and thought it would go anywhere🤪. I got stuck and could get hold of anyone for a recovery. The Missus said she’d call her dad who I still hadn’t met. This is how the first time I met the father in law went.
He turns up in a wrangler and comes over and says, “so you’re jimmy, do you do much 4wheeling?”
    I said “yeah” .
He threw his snatch strap towards me and said “doesn’t look like it” then got in his car.
He made the recovery and got out before I could, disconnected the strap from his car and said, “bring it around when it’s clean with 2 bottles of wine” then drove off.
That year for my birthday he bought me some maxx traxx with “try these before you call me next time” written on the box.
Later that year we did a trip to Broke Inlet where he got bogged in some sand. This was my time to shine!!! I ran up to his car with the still unopened box and said, “ you wanna see if these work?”
Since then I’ve upgraded the navara to a 76 series and couldn’t be happier

I got an emergency call (Get home right now, family emergency) and went down a trail doing about 3 times what I should have been. 2 hours later, at home, I found that my entire front suspension was effectively gone, scraped off by the highway after I broke the A-arm mounts bounding down the trail.

This video has sort of hit home for me. I remember about 35 years ago when I was around 10 or 11 years of age hearing of an accident that had happened to one of my dad's customers from his work shop. Apparently they were out four weeling in the Victorian high country somewhere and during a recovery the winch cable snapped (steel cables only back in those days) cutting him in half. As a young kid hearing that story it still plays on my mind when ever we are out with friends and have to do a recovery. I'm the one running around like a madman telling everyone to get out of the way before we start a recovery. I'd rather be too safe than not safe enough.

    • @brodiewillis9694

@@JHsadler if you point downhill and its in first and for whatever reason it decides to compress the engine can ignite. cant happen if its oppisite, if it somehow does it will not travel as far if it were in the gear related to direction of travel. it will compression lock itself.

    • @marekchytry147

Well, there are many engines that would get ruined by this, most vehicles have hydraulic chain tensioners so the timing belt or chain isnt tight enough before starting and it can ruin your timing and then your pistons are gonna meet valves. The chance of belt or chain getting loose is way higher if the engine rotates backwards.

For your part 2! One of the worst offroading mistakes I've seen, which got us into a bit of strife on Fraser Island, having someone who didn't get the concept of backing trailers spotting someone in a tight spot backing a camper trailer. Give this person 10 points for effort, but gotta know your experience and your capabilities when spotting someone backing a trailer - fortunately someone with experience (not me haha) stepped in and we got out! But yea it is important when backing campers - it pays to have someone with experience spotting you

You forgot with any tow rope/cable/etc - throwing weights onto the rope. Also, if applicable, raise the hood (assuming you have a metal hood and not plastic) to serve as an impromptu shield should the rope part. Had a nice dent in the hood of one truck for quite a few years from a cable parting and the metal finding metal.

@@jasonpen777 In an instance where you are being pulled by the nose, you generally have a good idea of where and how far you are going. That said, communication (horns mainly if no 2 way radios are handy) is key. Again though, *metal* hoods are required; plastic/carbon fiber etc i would not trust to stop a flying ball/hook/etc. Still, Weighted bags, or running the cable thru a tire is also needed.

G'day Ronny & Torb's Great video as always & some very bloody good points to think about & keep in mind when out on any adventure.
The only piece of advice I have difficulty with & personally won't do is the one were you recommend always putting the truck in gear when
parked with the handbrake applied & ignition off.
This is good advice for Petrol & for the newer Diesel engines, However with the older Diesel engine were they have a manually operated
cable to shut them down if these trucks roll & it does not need to be much they will fire up & go bush bashing on there own.
Unfortunately I am speaking from experience, it''s as funny as now but back on the day it scared the crap out of me in the mad dash to catch the
bloody truck & jump back on board without getting run over by my own flaming truck. LOL
    Anyway, fellas Safe Travels, Steve.

Tyres, overall gearing make a huge diffence. 35s great for clearance. How quick does it rev.
Change tyres on 79 to 32/33 inch tyres.
You will be surprised, 79 towing tune will be usable.

My worst mistake: relying too much on traction control that it overheated my brakes. I had to leave the car that day and come back the next day to pick it up.

My worst mistake was when I wasn't wearing my seat belt with the doors off my Jeep. I hit a bump and it had my arse hanging out the side while I held the wheel and my feet stayed inside. Lucky for me I got back in, but the guys behind me had a great laugh. Legend has it that they still laugh at me to this day.

Just this last year in October 2020, a guy relied on his handbrake on Black Bear Pass in Colorado, US. His Jeep Wrangler went off the cliff with his passenger and two dogs still in the vehicle. Look it up. "Jeep falls down Black Bear Pass" it's freaking insane

Sank a honda civic crossing a river in fiji (following a troopy).....note that it's not just the river speed but the buoyancy aspect the vehicle creates in the water that decreases the traction. We managed to open the doors to flood the inside and reduce the buoyancy but too late....Also we kept windows down when crossing....the pressure may not let you open the doors in the water in a hurry if you need to bail!! I bailed out the open window and was swept down stream about 30M before swimming to shore. Soggy passports made life interesting!

I littlery did 4x4 maintenance the other day then forgot to put my jack back in the car. A day later I headed to the watagens and got a huge puncture. Could not change the tyre and was strandered for 18 hours before a passing car came with a jack. Always check before heading out XD

My worst mistake. Gravel roads 1ft of snow driving a ford escort.
Ended up high centered on a snow drift took me hours to dig it out

Here is a not very common thing that goes along with relying on hand brakes ect. ect. I had a first gen Land Rover discovery. One of the birfield joints had broken in the front axel during a day of wheeling. The park mechanism in its automatic transmission didnt work because of this. The hand brake also barely held. You guessed it, at the end of the day, During a night BBQ. I had to chase down my rig. Luckily nothing bad happened. Thanks for all the great content Ronny + friends

thats opening scene is exactly how jeep just went over Black Bear Pass recently. His woman and 2 dogs were still in the jeep. All survived.
Best tip there is... Let your buddy go first. True to mototravel, water crossings, overlanding, rockcrawling.

If you walk across a river with strong flow and you have to cross and providing you survive the crocks then take a winch line with you ,secure it to the other side and at least if it goes pear shaped you have a way out or at worst an anchor for your new submarine lol

My worst mistake would have been when I had to self winch recover out of a bog hole. It wasn't necessarily deep it was just soft at the bottom. I did check it before going through and it seemed firm but I was clearly wrong. No worries getting out once the winch was connected.

Not my rig but saw a rig get flipped back over after a roll-over and it wasn't tethered to anything... and rolled away... far away...
