  • Look at these incredible VINTAGE Airliners from the 1970s.
    I recently found some footage my grandfather took on Super 8mm film from the 1970s showing some CLASSIC AIRLINERS.
    Filmed in Menorca, Spain the footage shows:
    DAN AIR Comets and BAC 1-11s
    MONARCH Boeing 720B
    LAKER Boeing 707
    COURTLINE Locheed 1011 Tristar
    BRITANNIA Boeing 737-200
    It's vintage footage so it's a little grainy but I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane with these classic 1970s airliners.

    Great to see the beautiful Court Line TriStar. Way ahead of its time. Now part of a fascinating era in UK airline history.

      Thanks David. Those Courtline planes were so colourful. I remember flying to Spain in a turquoise BAC 1-11 and back on a pink one.

    My family and I used to travel to our holiday home in Menorca from the late 1980’s until 2000, when my sister and I left home. At this time my parents moved there. I have watched the airport grow from reed covered departure gates walking out to the Dan air B1-11, B727 Monarch B737 all the way up to and Cal Air DC 10 - now the airport has jetways and a proper terminal - in a way this makes me sad as not only does this show an increase in visitors to my 2nd home- meaning hotels, roads etc have become the same as other holiday destinations but also means that the historic memories are purely that - memories, but at least I still have them. It was my flights on all these airlines and many more that brought on my love of aviation, flying but mainly aircraft - inspiring my to apply to be cabin- that resulted in 30 yrs in aviation firstly as Dan Air crew, then to be swallowed up by BA in the buy out

      Thanks so much for sharing your memories. My family went to Menorca every year between 1972 and 1987. We flew many times with Dan Air. I remember once our Captain was Yvonne Sintes who at the time (I think) was the first female airline Captain in the UK. I do have found memories of Dan Air!

    Dan Dare Scareways as I recall it. They were and still are my favourite Airline, the only airline that has come close for me is Malèv, also sadly gone.

    Incredible footage! Takes me back to being a kid going to Majorca in 72 and 74 on the Mon 720b and Britannia 737 to Ibiza in 73. I recall seeing the two Courtline L1011 Pink and Yellow Tristars (Halcyon Days and Halcyon Breeze) parked up at Luton after Court went bust. They looked huge to a small lad like me too! I beleive those Tristars were eventually sold to Cathay Pacific. Gtreat memories.

    I wonder if that noisy Laker 707 was G-AVZZ? If so, I flew on it a couple times in 1974 when it was on loan to International Caribbean Airways of Barbados. It flew on scheduled flights to Barbados out of Gatwick and Luxembourg. And yes, it was noisy as heck, as was all the first generation jetliners. Beautiful memories!

      Ach - pity the old footage is so grainy we can't be sure. Highly likely I'd say though - they didn't have many of those 707s as far as I know. Thanks for watching😀.

    I have flown on Comet 4's, Channel Airways, Dan Air and BEA Airtours/British Airtours. My least favourite jet aircraft. Too long ago to be sure exactly why but I think because of the high noise levels in the cabin due to the location of the engines.
    The Boeing 720 was an impressive aircraft to be used on holiday charter fights. Despite the stigma of operating from Luton as opposed to Gatwick, Monarch was one of the better UK charter airlines of the time, which was helped by using this type of aircraft and the provision of above average standards of holiday charter in-flight service.
    Laker did not fly to the med under the brand name of Skytrain. That was the brand name for the low cost transatlantic scheduled service. The confusion may have arisen due to the fact that all the DC10 aircraft carried the Skytrain branding and therefore if such an aircraft were to be operated on a holiday charter flight to the med (or even a transatlantic ABC charter flight) the the Skytrain name would be visible on the aircraft.
    Court Line aircraft did look nice from the outside but they were the Ryanair of their time and not the nicest airline to fly with with horrors such as 'seat back catering' awaiting their passengers on board.

      Wow - thanks for all those memories and great info. I have vague memories of the Court Line back seat sandwiches, but I was only 5 or 6 so maybe I’ve invented memories from reading about them. I do remember rock hard, ice cold scones on the Dan Air flights a few years later though! 😀

    Courtline had a Tristan which was pink. I know because it was the first plane I ever flew on in the early 70’s. It was named halcyon breeze

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Год назад +1

      YES! The Pink Tristar was Halcyon Breeze and the Orange Tristar was Halcyon Days! All the BAC 1-11s also had names with Halcyon something: Halcyon Sun, Halcyon Beach etc! 😀

    Loved this Roger - very evocative. Thanks. My parents first took me to the Spanish mainland in 1968 - in my mother's womb! Nerja apparently. We used to go a lot in the early 1970s, when Franco ruled. A different time. Still miss the Peseta!

      Thanks Nick - I have a box full of these Super 8mm films - but no idea what’s on them (apart from holding them up to the light and looking) and it’s quite expensive to get them converted to digital. This was the only one my grandfather had written on. One word. TRISTAR.

    Thank you for sharing. I wonder if anyone can help me with a little query. Im trying to identify an aircraft that i flew on back in 1988 (which i think was a BAC 1-11). I flew from Manchester to Ibiza and the carrier was Dan Air. We entered the plane from a set of folding stairs in the tail of the aircraft and i remember feeling the heat of the engines blowing into my face as i boarded. My seat was over the wing and the couple in front of me were facing me - that is, they were flying backwards. I think i was on the 1-11 but ive never seen the backward facing seat configuration since.

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  9 дней назад +2

      Dan Air’s BAC 1-11s and the B727s both had the rear tail doors but as afar as I know there were no backwards facing seats on either aircraft.
      Dan Air Comets did have backwards facing seats around the wing area but the last flight was in 1980.
      That probably doesn’t help much? 🤔

    • @RobCLynch
      @RobCLynch 9 дней назад +2

      @@RogEdwardsTV it all helps, so thank you very much. The Comet looks a lot bigger than the plane we went on and I have pinned it down to the 1-11 or the 727, but the rear-facing seats over the wing have thrown me. It's the only time that I've seen such a seat configuration.
      Thanks again.

    Good god man you are acting as if '73 was the time of Wiiliam the Conqurer and not PM Callahan. I visited Gatwick airport back in that period and there were many UK charter outfits which disappeared around that period. When I saw "Caledonian" even earlier in Amsterdam I wondered where in the world it was from?
