Yes Roger agree that Glasgow tops Newcastle, especially regarding the room, which as you said looked tired and very brown! Breakfasts looked similar though. Would still stay at hotel if staying in Newcastle, hopefully with a better room view! Good walkabout around the city centre. Nice one! 😊 👍
When it was run by Mr R Handa it was okay gone down hill a lot now. The sons used to run a few hotels which is now part of the Cairns group. I got to know Mr Handa very well and his son in Law who was a doctor who I did some electrical work in his hotel in Stirling.
Much appreciate your style Roger with this hotel series. Newcastle is probably what most people would think is a typical BR-style railway hotel ! But still it offers lots of history from the golden days and of course is a perfect location for those arriving by train.
Cheers Alex. I'm glad there ar BTHs at all price points. As impressive as The Balmoral and The Landmark are - they are so expensive. Glasgow, Newcastle etc makes them more accessible to everyone! 😀
Loved the look around the hotel. It brought back memories of meeting Rod Stewart there in December 1976 after a concert at the City Hall. As you walk in the hotel and up those few steps there is a private reception room to the left (before the lifts). Rod was sat at the head of a long low table waiting for some sandwiches. Britt Ekland was nearby but she gave me a mucky look, almost as if I was taking her Rod away for a few minutes. Rod was great we chatted about the concert, his record collection and soul singer Sam Cooke. Spent a good 10 minutes with him and got my programme signed. Before I went in to meet him, the members of his band and Newcastle United football team were hanging out in the lobby (Rod was going training with them the next day). Great experience and your video (unbeknown to you) brought back a special memory. From one Rog to another. Thank you.
Hi Cathy. I wasn’t looking for boat trips whilst I was there so not sure about what’s available. But Google says there’s a variety available. One for the next trip. 😀
Very nice review - you have a warm, engaging style. Nothing beats a glass of red (especially complementary). I stayed there about 2 months ago. It was fine for one night - room was good size, dated as you say. The main issue was my room faced out to the main road and it was quite noisy from the street even at 11pm. Location was great; next to station and easy walking distance to the main sights. Definitely not as good as the Glasgow place.
Thanks so much for the comments! I had a bit of a giggle when I saw the earplugs in the drawer. But given the traffic noise (and there was a night club downstairs which I didn't mention in the video) I can see why they might be needed! 😮😂
@@RogEdwardsTV Yes because they offer so much more not just in terms of service but quality. These buildings need enormously deep pockets to keep going. There are wealthy people out there but the lower priced old hotels are doomed. The Mercure in Exeter is in a similar vein to Newcastle - seen better days. As for The Grand in Torquay - I'd love to see your review of that one!
Catching up on Daddy Rog's videos after my holiday in Ireland and Italy! Royal Station still retains a bit of that old world glamour in its interiors; Dublin's only true railway hotel (maybe?) is The Address, sitting directly across from Connolly Station, is even more pared down than this although it's designated as a 4-star property. Poke!
Ah now I think I lucked out with my room - it was £60, a small single room in the roof, but had a bit of a view and was very pleasant indeed. Also (after booking) I had read the Tripadvisor reviews and went in expecting the worst, so was pleasantly surprised! The reviews barely mentioned the wonderfully preserved grandeur of the public places, but there is always going to be a bias towards complaints, I suppose.
In the 70s there were 33 BTH hotels I believe only one is no longer a hotel (Zetland ,,Saltburn by the sea )(apartments now ) I hope you manage to do them all
I used to stay at the Paddington Hotel when I worked in Big Corporate. And I get to stay at The Landmark every year as I help run a conference there! 😀
Hi Roger.... quite a let down our city hotel.... I was hearing snippets 20 years ago and now I've seen the truth..... breakfast looked OK.... but Glasgow was far superior as you said. Don't approach Blackpool whatever you do😅..... Richard Turnbull Newcastle upon Tyne 😊
Indeed. Glasgow hotel is the top brand of an international chain whereas Newcastle is owned by a domestic firm. As for hotel rates these vary depending on a city's occupancy. Glasgow has lower rates because so many hotels. I mean Virgin Hotels opened a brand new 5* Glasgow property in August 2023 but had to close it before Christmas 2023 (after only four months !) because it couldn't fill its rooms.
It'll be interesting to see how the other BTHs of the same price point compare to Glasgow, like Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester. 😀 Thanks for watching.
Bad memories this hotel. Reminds me when I booked a train from Edinburgh to Birmingham. Due to `cancellation we were put on a bus to Newcastle and dumped outside this hotel at the train station . No fun at all. Hotel looks like it needs a bit of paintwork. Window frames look rotten.
You have to be careful with the station hotels because Britannia PLC have got their hands on some of them and they look upmarket on the outside but you are soon brought down to Earth 🌍!
It's very overpriced for what it is and puts me in mind of a Brittania Hotel. I don't know why anyone would stay here when you've got the Hampton by Hilton just over the road. Plus you have the Maldron which is just a short walk away. I guess they're just relying on the name and nostalgia to get guests the doors

Thanks Alan. It was a lovely afternoon for a walk about! 😀

Great video 👍 keep up the amazing work.
Awesome! Thank you! Much appreciated. 😀🙌

That is a fabulous story! Thanks so much for sharing, Rog, from Rog! 😀The tales these hotels can tell!
Hey Newcastle looks good in the sun! And a bit brighter than your room eh? :D
Thanks Steve! It’s so nice to see the sun, even if I did have to open the window and stick my head out to see it from that room! 😂
Lovely architecture of this hotel,, shame your room was so dark and you didn’t have a decent view.
Can you get a boat trip on the river Tyne?

It hasn't improved much since I last stayed there in 2001. The days of these hotels must be numbered given the enormous cost of upkeep.
I wonder whether the really expensive ones (like The Balmoral and The Landmark) will last longer than the cheaper (and more rundown ones). 🤔

Hope you had a good holiday. The Address Connolly looks interesting and has recently been refurbished apparantly! 😀

The Grammy award winning singer Melissa Etheridge stayed there on the 16th of April 1988, wrote a song there and called it “Royal Station 4/16”
Wow that’s really interesting. Thanks so much for sharing. 😀
In the 70s there were 33 BTH hotels I believe only one is no longer a hotel (Zetland ,,Saltburn by the sea )(apartments now ) I hope you manage to do them all
Thanks Paul! That’s my aim (though it will probably take a while😂).
How much was it for the night.
£108 plus £10 for breakfast. 🥓☕️
I worked there and also Gt Western Paddington
I used to stay at the Paddington Hotel when I worked in Big Corporate. And I get to stay at The Landmark every year as I help run a conference there! 😀
I have stayed at this hotel and at the County hotel opposite the station and this one is far superior and often cheaper.
I stayed at the County about 7 years ago. It’s good but not as “grand” as the Royal Station.
This rusty radiator is a museum value antique. that's why it's so expensive 😂
Absolutely! 😂
I wanted to stay here but they wanted photo ID which I don't have 👍
They didn’t ask me for photo id at check in. Not even a credit card swipe. They took all my details from my online booking. 🤔
@@RogEdwardsTV ah ok, just according to a well known booking website they do.. but I guess I'd have to email them and check 👍
@sarahillingworth2718 If you book direct off their website you get 10% off the room, 15% off food and a free drink voucher! 😂
@@RogEdwardsTV oh ok sounds good 👍

They built things properly in those days.
The. British Transport Hotels are all impressive on the outside! 😀🏢
where your youtube video today rog edwards tv?
All will be revealed at 12pm! 😀
Think youll struggle to beat the glasgow one on price and value its a cracking hotel.
It'll be interesting to see how the other BTHs of the same price point compare to Glasgow, like Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester. 😀 Thanks for watching.
Looks good, but I agree the Glasgow hotel looks better. I would prefer the Copthorne hotel if I stayed in Newcastle.
The Copthorne is in a great spot on the Quayside. It is a 1960s concrete brutalist building to look at. 😂
You can`t put a price on a night out in Newcastle though.
True enough! 🍷🍺
loved the architecture of the public areas of the hotel, that staircase *chefs kiss*
the room itself was the 3 B's lol brown, bland and boring
😉
The staircase is spectacular for sure!
I would go so far as to say "Glasg😀w's miles better"
For sure! I'd like to see Newcastle refurbished up to a similar standard!
That doesn't sound good! Did you end up staying there or did you find somewhere else?
You have to be careful with the station hotels because Britannia PLC have got their hands on some of them and they look upmarket on the outside but you are soon brought down to Earth 🌍!
Too true! 🥲
cheryl from girls aloud comes from newcastle
Cool!

It could be so good with a little investment. 😀
Think the Glasgow is better
Agreed! 😀
Newcastle has not been kind to Hotels
🥲 Thanks for watching.
crap hotel
☺️
Totally basic generic inside the room. Very disappointing for someone expecting 1850s vibe
The bedroom had an MFI vibe for sure! 😂
