That's not necessarily true. Take bullet hell games like Ketsui, DoDonPachi or Touhou for example. Those kinds of games can have crazy steep learning curves and obtuse scoring systems, and they don't exactly tell the player how they work. Nothing in the games tells you that they're supposed to be beaten with one credit for example. Getting into these games can take a lot of time and trial and error, but once you have enough practice and experience under your belt, they start to be really enjoyable.
@@supahgualtah It's more about putting effort and time into something that's not that fun at first, but after a while the game really starts to open up and becomes really fun. Ideally I think the learning process should also be fun, but with games that require a lot of memorization like many shmups, it often isn't.
@@davioliva7088 I use the rule of Big Boss, everything that I can use as a weapon will be a weapon. What I care more about everything in order and doing everything, knowing the lore well, I'm not going to play just with a big sword and that's it.
Spread word of 'em where you can, especially with new ones. Stuff like Soulstice, Genokids, Yasuke: A Lost Descendant, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, and I think that Cookie Cutter and Immortal: And the Death that Follows can be added to this kind of gameplay style too.
There is no "right" or "wrong" way to play it. Clearly, SMS put immense effort into this world to create an experience for someone who's never played a video game before. You can play on Easy and have an awesome time because you're living the fantasy of an unstoppable Spartan warrior going on an epic adventure. But the awesome thing is, when you've played the game 100+ times, when none of the story or environments really engross you anymore, you can turn up the difficulty and find a new joy in a deep complex enjoyable combat system. SMS really thought of everyone here. These games are extremely accessible and vibes-heavy (which contributed to its popularity), but at the same time has a very deep thought out gameplay loop for the hardcore EPIC GAMERS out there. There's no "right" or "wrong" way. Anyone can enjoy them for one reason or another. You just shifted from one category to another is all. Both are perfectly valid.
Sure but now I get a fuller experience. I'm still amazed with the world and the feeling of adventure. But now I also enjoy it more because the game is pushing me to get better. And I think that's objectively a better experience
@@KaptainKuba And you'd be wrong, because such an experience is *always* subjective. There will be others that do not enjoy it at all. There is no objectively better or worse way. That's always down to your own personal experience and hence inherently subjective. The only "wrong" way to play a game is playing it in a way that isn't fun to you.
I don't want to brag about it but I've beaten the older god of war games on the hardest difficulty a lot of times. What you said on the video is true. The game becomes more fun when you play it trying to never lose your hits. Every time I play god of war, I kill the enemies as more creatively as a I can. I try to use all the attacks and I want keep increasing the hits.
seeing zesty in the beginning is actually grrat because it showcases that kuba is now more related to zesty in gow content creation which i am a big fan of
@@KaptainKuba yeah loving a thing but in a different perspective is one of the best feelings because when i played gow 2018 first time years ago i didnt like it but after that impression i played it differently and the most thing i likes is the experience but after seeing zesty i love the combat so much that it became a near perfect game like it really changed my perspective in games generally
I'd encourage everyone to play Dante's Inferno if you can find it. Incredible game, worthy of an update and series. As far as the old God of War games, let me suggest the hardest mode with no upgrades (no upgrade run), and I'd also suggest doing the challenges. Each game has them. There is one challenge where you can't get hit at all or you fail (I'm not sure which game this challenge was on). I still go back through and play the old games, and try to find hidden chests. About 2 years ago, I found four chests in God of War 3 I had never found before. In about 18 months it will be the 20th anniversary for God of War. I'm not sure if they have anything planned, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a complete remaster, possibly even a remaster bundle to go with the PS5 Pro. We'll see what's in store because I can't imagine a 20 year anniversary to go by without any type of update.
Mostly agree, the only thing I dislike about the game is that part close to the end that pretty much feels like the challenge mode of god of war. As an optional thing it's okay, but in dantes inferno it's part of the main game and that shit is often just way too hard, even on normal. ^^;
thank you for making this point. my cousin and I have always been talking about this exact issue forever among friends... so nice to just hear it from someone else!
You'd be shocked how many people do the bare minimum or find one strategy that works and just cruise on by thinking they're doing the extent of what they can or should be doing lol
I don't agree there's a wrong way to play the game, as long as you're enjoying it. Hack'n'slash games usually have a lot of in-depth and hard to master mechanics, so if a person doesn't want to dive deep into all of this and just want to chill, i can totally understand it. Difficulty options are there for a reason. And i'm telling that as a combo enjoyer. But like, if you're not experiencing the whole thing with all the details and choosing only to play the story, for example, your opinion about the game will be missing these details as well. I mean, there's no wrong way to play a game, but there's a wrong way of judging it. If you're skipping some aspects of the game intentionally for your own comfort and enjoyment, you should skip these aspects as well when you're judging it. Of course, it is not how the game journalists work, they need to tell about every aspect for a review, but they don't have time or desire to explore every aspect, and because of that we have "button mashing" reviews. Again, not because they played it wrong, but because they judged it wrong. Sadly, that's how most reviews work.
@@KaptainKuba look at this from the other perspective - you have a lot of great time ahead with a new way of playing your favourite game :) It's like you preserved the sweetest part of it for the right moment so you can keep it fresh for yourself even after all this time. Kinda jealous actually 😅
It's so true that just looking at it very a different angle changes what makes the way people talk about this kinda stuff actually wrong in the first place, its not that people who play easier modes are in the wrong for that itself, its the way the game exists in their mind because of it. If they only experience a version of it that requires far less thought and effort, of course someone might say its mindless, and it could go the other way, someone that's overconfident but unfamiliar with a game playing on a harder mode for the first playthrough might feel its too hard, its why I'm a big fan of how games often let you change your difficulty mid game now, your opinion very well may change as you go but you don't wanna restart the whole thing, its a very welcome thing that I hope a lotta people make use of.
I was just like you then the gods of the gods of Olympus introduced me to zesty, I learned so much from his videos. I cant say I play now for the combo meter I just do the combo for the fun of the combo
Sounds like my the game Batman: Rise Of Sin Tzu. It essentially could match the Bee button and make it to the game, much like you said about early God of War or Devil May Cry games but without the graphics or story to entertain. Batman boasted four different playable characters (Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing) for a two player co-op beat’em up game in which each character had an unlock-able set of moves meant to enhance your gameplay, but proved to be unnecessary for beating the game so it was assumed the same for “playing” the game. After reading the reviews, I promptly went out and bought a used copy from our local store. It happened to be a perfect game for my seven-year-old son and myself to play. The animation is based on Batman : The Animated series, so it appealed to both of us, but the gameplay (though lacking in story) allowed me to delve into the Mortal Kombat inspired move set while he could happily button mash his way like he was playing an old TMNT arcade game of the 90’s. Was it a perfect game? Not even close, according to the reviews, but as this video essay points out… It did find its place with a small audience to be “played correctly”. Thanks for a great video! 🙋♂️🎮🦇🎮👶
For a second I tough you were inventing a game. Never heard about this batman game and my God what a peculiar name, maybe only bellow El Shaddai Ascension of the Metatron
I was using a tactic of not upgrading Poseidons/Cronos rage to make sure I could extend combos because enemies don't die as fast. Figured that an hour after playing GOW for the first time 😂 EDIT: Milking enemies until they don't drop orbs works extremely well too
I've recently played again GoW3 in the ps5, after more than 5 years. As I played in a new console as new game, I didn't have chaos mode yet but I inmediatly ran to titan. And my hit was to max all as soon as possible. I realize that doing up to 100 combo and starting again was more effective than keep increasing the combo, as reaching 100 give you 60 or 65 plus orbs, and then gives orbs every 100 combos (25,30,40 and so on) which makes less orbs than first 100. Then I realised that it was more efficient restarting the combo every 100 hits than keeping it. But now I want to go again with the previous games
I know i played God If War wrong at first. Back thenbi used Gameshark with everything i could. Used infinite red orbs. Also i went from the easiest difficulty then jumped to the unlockable hardest difficulty. Well as i was playing 2005 the orginal, i was nearing the end, i was having fun, but sonethibg told me, start all over again, no cheats. I did so and i started playing legit again. God If War made me come back to being a gamer with integrity. Then i went fron easy, to normal, to hard, to hardest. Since then my gaming attitude has been much better. I get my money's worth now. Becaude i mastered The Greek Sagas six games on all difficulties, got red orb cost conscious, and lost bad habbits, and made better methods of tactics in gameplay. Made me a more mature gamer. Thank you God Of War.
Nice video, I'm glad I found your channel :3 still, can't believe what you said about ninja theory tho. Yes the change was drastic, but both hell ladies are goddamn art pieces, there's still other companies that make hack n slash, so, there's no need for ninja theory to not evolve
I was 10 years old. I'm from India and my parents didn't really know much about games and that some could be adults, so when I played God of War, I pretty much lost my mind. However, playing games like Age of Empires and Mythology, I loved the Greek Universe. Today, it's been 16 years since I played my first GOW game. I'm 25 today, and it's my favourite series of all time.
I haven’t played the games set in Greece yet, but the Norse saga definitely made me a better gamer. These games really do encourage and reward cranking up the difficulty and learning to use the entire arsenal of weapons and mechanics. Up until I played the GOW games I would always learn a small subset of gameplay mechanics in other games (usually stealth based) and take my time going through them with just that limited arsenal. Now I’m much more likely to explore all the mechanics and learn the ones that are difficult for me in any game I play.
Great video Kaptain!!! I’m happy for you that you found love again for the God of War franchise, as it is my top favorite as well! I too felt the same way at times with God of War (Greek Series). Once God of War (Norse Series) came out, it added a whole different playstyle like you mentioned in the video, and even had me rethinking & replaying God of War (Greek Series) ever so differently. Playing at higher difficulties FORCES you to learn the mechanics with more depth, and to genuinely use all your tools & resources at your disposal. Now this is a completely different genre, but one game I recently replayed with the genuine intent to learn & improve upon was Doom Eternal. And let me tell you, once you learn the mechanics and understand the game better, it completely changed my experience! I fell in love with it!!! Now that game literally FORCES you to learn about mechanics, weak points, weapon advantages/disadvantages, resource management, and finally, getting into the “flow-state”. And once you’re in that flow-state, it becomes an addiction lol. I highly recommend you give Doom Eternal a chance! It has now become one of my favourite games and franchises along with God of War 🔥🔥🔥
Coño!! I just started playing GoW Ragnarok and this completely changed my perception of how to play. I’m usually one to research and find tips and tricks but this just happened to find its way to me. Kudos Kaptain! 🙌🏼
Just finished my first run of gow 1&2 on easy difficulty. Square square triangle is true. After watching this video I have realized after a few times had died I was started to think about it and try to use something more complex. I like the game as it was. The perfect balance between hack and slash with calm puzzle sections. It is as good move with brilliant action scenes and story for let u rest ❤
The same thing i feel when playing Sekiro. In the first time, when i find the core mechanic is parry and hit, i did it through the whole game and continue to new game+ without changing the strategy. I think it just work. So i mostly overlook the prosthetic arm, ninjutsu, and potion mechanic. I rarely use other prosthetic tool and ninjutsu because i think i don't need it (except for several boss that need to use it). After a while, i find Ongbal youtube channel and surprised that he could utilize all the mechanic efficiently and the gameplay looks more enjoyable and interesting to watch, rather than just slash-parry-slash- and so on. He manage to execute some crazy combo feat frequently changing mechanical arm tools and do some ninjutsu on single boss fight. Something that i never bother myself 😅 So, i think "is there a wrong way to play video games?" The answer is "yes" if you want to fully experience the whole game as the developer intended when they give you all the tools and mechanic. And "no" if you just want to finish the game story, having fun, and know what the game is about. But you missed the most opportunity to experience the game in its maximum state and makes your purchase feel not optimal. Another example is, when you play platformer game that require you to obtain every coin/orb/points like super mario world or rayman, you missed the chance to fully understand the clever design of that game. Yes, you can finish the by just running to right and reach the finish line, but you missed how amazing is the developer put the coin in specific place or how we achieve it. I'm very surprised when i finish 100% Super Mario World by obtaining all coins and enter all the secret area (where it's really fun to do), it change the whole map is color 😂 So it's your freedom to how you play the game. *Sorry for the bad grammar.
In a funny twist of events, the first time I got to play this game was on Hard difficulty, in a friend's house. He was playing the game, then offered me the controller, every time I got the controller, sucked pretty bad, obviously. So when I finally got a PS2 and bought the game myself, I challenged me to start on Hard mode from beginning. It was a fun and annoying experience, as every new enemy encounter or boss was always testing my skills or forcing me to do better. Got to stuck to some areas for hours at times. I remember I took an entire night to beat the Minotaur on Hard. It was almost 5 am when I did it. Same happened on Very Hard, being stuck in several more times then. So I never had this feeling of "mindless button masher", as the very first times I tried to "button mash", enemies would kill me EASILY, and it forced me to time my blocks and rolls to be damaged as little as possible, learn patterns, etc. Only recently (after becoming good at Devil May Cry games) I returned to GOW, trying to focus on longer strings, aerial combos, and also keeping the combo meter as high as possible (without abusing magic, of course). The game is much more challenging, thus, fan this way. +I got to discover several things on this game's playstyle, strings and techs which were never catalogued anywhere, just by experimenting...
@@DanteBlack Soulstice, Genokids, Enenra, Immortal: and the Death that Follows, Cookie Cutter, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Yasuke: A Lost Descendant. Normally i'd give some quick rundowns on all of them but at the time of writing this i'm feeling a bit woozy. I'll leave it at the ones that have released : - Soulstice is one of my favourite games in the entire hack-and-slash/character action genre despite issues of pacing, a few annoying enemy types (about three or four-- the others can have some annoyances, but all of the seven weapons total have utilities to make different enemy types more managable) Has a lot to offer on the front of gameplay, bosses, and a very good story. - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is a more concise package, worst I can say about it is that you can get lost at times. Has you finding and assigning different martial arts styles and individual attacks to customize your full fighting style with. Fuppin' amazing atmosphere and art direction. - Cookie Cutter's a 2D hand-drawn animated metroidvania with a combat emphasis. Quite fast combat at that, has you throwing enemies into the air or in environmental hazards. Weapons vary from a big fist to an electric guitar to a chainsaw and some more. Solid game despite some issues, like a mid-game crystal mine area (for me at least) and some enemy types. It's a big passion project by its developer and while a finished game as is, he's working on even more content like new areas, characters, story beats and weapons which he has teased on Twitter. The others have yet to come out. A friend of mine described Immortal: And the Death that Follows as Hindu Mad Max Beat-em-Up. Hope these have all sounded interesting to you so far!

I already knew that My first gow game was chains of olympus, after 10 hits finishing the opponent the orbs doubled, very useful for playing on very hard
My dude. This is not something you probably could have appreciated when you first played GoW. You were a kid. You knew what worked as a kid and you rinsed and repeated. How often has you seen someone do something as an adult that was so much more intrinsic than you were used to and it just clicked for you? As you get older you gain more exposure to new things, and GoW is one of those things where you were isolated to just yourself and your friends if you knew them to play the same game. You’re good dude! Enjoy and congratulations on continued learning and growth! 😊
I played the original trilogy and fell in love. I'm not sure if the game draws attention to the combo rewards but I saw them as a kid and then tried to make every encounter at least a 100 hit combo. Then when 2018 dropped I realized (after a few playthroughs) that the combo meter is gone because Kratos has evolved and is more cautious in his approach. That's also why the game pushes so hard AGAINST rage fueled motivation and has Kratos reluctantly have to fight for the right things. I personally love all GoW. Kratos evolved the same way myths evolve. If a god can change his nature why can't you.
I still need god of war 1 and 2 and chains of olympus and ghost of sparta on ps5. In my country we dont get the psnow or psplus versions to play. I am still waiting for the remastered or remake versions of the old god of war games.
Yes! It irks me when people call these games button mashers. You're exactly right. All they've done is beat it on easy and couldn't advance on harder settings.
The last statement is super interesting. It's so sad but actually true how much power these journalists have had on shaping the gaming industry. The gaming industry is in the shape that it is because these people who usually are terrible at games, bullied creative fun games into disappearing and praised cinematic games like there was no tomorrow. Result, every game is now a open world, story driven, souls like. Which I used to love each of these types of games but now that every game is a blend of the 3 it lost all uniqueness.
I was a Devil May Cry fan before I played God of War and in DMC3 I ran into the exact same thought process and that variety of play. I love this genre for it's old school arcade type feel.
My early years of gaming started with my Sisters watching me, So I have to play with "entertainment" as my goal. it's mean no "slow and safe", no repetitive move, no spam. I have to utilized all the moves, abilities and switch throught targets to make every encounter as cinematic as possible. This build gaming habit so good that I never realize until I grow up (20s) and that one time I gaming with my Uni's friends, they comment that whao, you played like those guy on RUclips. I always thought every one play like that and "hard mode" is actually hard. The "gamer's gameplay" is not the baseline of "every gamer". ---"Stop try to win, Try to look cool winning"
Also if you excecute an enemy with circle while the combo meter is above 10 hits, you will get 10+ red orbs. A "ruthless kill" message appear in the combo meter.
Wait… you don’t understand how long I was looking for that pinball space cadet game. I randomly stumbled upon this video. Automatic thumbs up from me just for that. Part of my childhood restored.
That's how I've been playing trilogy the whole time. I've been farming on enemies on combos, even when they stop giving red orbs anymore when spawning. Then I use those currency to fund my weapons to be stronger. It's more fun on hardest difficulty because of the investment.
Both 2018 and Ragnarok thankfully carry this philosophy as they offer a thera's bane like upgrade to every weapon as long as we kept the combat going without get knocked and this where relic, ruinc attacks and boi's runic summons come into place
you MUST try the DMC V mod "Must Style". It's the cure for your problem. As the name suggests, you must reach a certain style rank to be able to DO DAMAGE to enemies. So, if you don't use everything you have and avoid being hit you literally cannot progress through the game.
Major props to this guy for admitting this. I loved the Legend of Zelda games, not for the combat or puzzles, but because they transported me to another world. When I got into fights, I just did the quickest, most boring tactics imaginable I was humiliated the first time I saw my friend play and how he truly made each battle seem so cinematic.
Exactly I think most gamers at heart are casual gamers. The most important part at that stage is the world and how interesting you find it. Now I've leveled up (pun intended lol) the world is important but I want to be pushed by the game to play better. More recently I have changed completely how I play the new doom games
This is pretty much how it is with all Greek GoW games. The more you perform a combo, you gain more red orbs in battle. It is ranged by: +2 = 10-19 hits +4 = 20-29 hits +6 = 30-39 hits +8 = 40-49 hits +10 = 50-79 hits +15 = 80-99 hits +20 = 100 and above hits (Could be more than +20, will probably edit this.) And you don’t need to hit an enemy to gain +10 red orbs, as 10 isn’t the highest. Here are some ways you can gain orbs with the O button: (needs to be 10 hits to trigger) +5 = Brutal Kill (Except in Chains of Olympus & Ascension) +10 = Ruthless Kill (Except Acension) +15 = Crushed (Kill enemies after petrifying them in GoW1 & 2) Though this outdated information but it’s still good to know to those who still have the Greek games. Also this combo strat is REQUIRED in the hardest difficulty. In the hardest difficulties, some red chests will NOT increase your orb counter (GoW2 onwards).
Its crazy that some people hate under the mayo just for having a diffrent opinion. Some of his gripes were very relatable and im saying this as a 2018 super fan
I don't think there is a right or wrong way as long as your having fun, but like yourself when you play different styles or hardness levels you open up another way to enjoy the game. I like going from easy to god of war whenever I start a new game. With easy I can enjoy the storyline, then increasing the difficultly levels I enjoy learning to beat enemies in a more efficient manner by learning the best techniques and combos to win a fight.
I used to despise the barbarian hammer for it's slowness until i found out ways to use it. For example near the medusa's temple there is a place where enemies spawn infinitly and are so weak i can hold them of with the hammer's souls and because the souls inflict so little damage they can build the combo meter quickly, enabling you to farm red orbs as long you don't destroy the pillars.
God of war 2 is for me a prime example how good and somewhat important unlockables can be. I used to play games only on easy and normal, but in god of war 2, you could unlock the athena skin, and I always love to play as female characters. The only way to unlock this skin though was to beat the game on it's highest difficulty, and oh boy, on this difficulty you really have to learn how to actual play the game. Well I did it, at least 3 times by now and it opened me up playing more games on their highest difficulty. Heck, I even would argue that god of war 2 and kingdom hearts 2 prepared me for bloodborne, which became one of my other fav. games of all time. That said, I still play games from time to time on normal, just to chill and have some fun, nothing wrong with that. Also as much I like the story of the new god of war game, I still prefer the classic ones. God of war 2018 I played only twice, and thats at least 2 years ago, ragnarok only once, not even bothering with all side missions and then exchanging it for some retro games on our local flea market. The classic though, specially 2 and ghost of sparta are the ones I return to at least once a year.
Ugh….. sniffles….. what? I learned something new today. It’s been YEARS since I touched the original games mind you. I don’t ever recall connecting the dots on this either. I wonder 🤔 is this a hidden mechanic in the reboot when it comes to experience?
My initial kick in the god of war series was to be the first one to finish all the games in the series before my friends... Afterwards, when I started to notice I was getting used to the mech and making faster time in the games(especially GoS and gow1) I started competing with my friends on the in game timer...During this time, internet and game forums were not very popular here in India so we mostly had to depend on our own skills and knowledge... Also we didn't even know GOATS like Satvara existed so somehow getting GOW1 between 2.5 to 3 hours and GoS under 2 hours was a flex for me in my peer group... And then it faded, until norse era came up to get more of the nice stories... But ultimately, it was the ThaRixer video on Satvara that absolutely changed how I looked the game, and many other games... That was what changed the OG gow games completely for me, trying to abuse the game and speedrun it as much as possible...
Also another thing was that since I was a child, I didn't realize that difficulty was supposed to be increased when you get better, so at that time, I had mostly finished the OG games on easy or medium... But when I first played 2018, I said wth lets go hardcore gimme god of war, died a 1000 times min, but managed to kill sigrun after beating that game...
I recently became interested in playing the series, because while I was playing other games, almost every young kid I met would say, "Duuuuuude, God of War is so awthum!!!!!" , and I wanted to know why. NOW I know why. I was missing out on an amazing 👏 cinematic style video game, with tons of action and storytelling.! 😮 so just finished the first, and going into the second iteration of the game 🎮 I hope by the time I get to GOW 3 the game lives up to my expectations, because so far, it's been a great 👍 experience.
Same thing can be said about the norse games , mainly ragnarok If you follow the path that developers created for us , the gameplay and rpg mechanics become so more interesting and truly change the gameplay I played ragnarok for almost 1000h now and went into every secret and every corner of it in every difficulty and did all what can be done And i can tell you the rpg mechanics in this game are truly well placed (this is coming from a guy who's favorite genre is rpg games) To explain briefly the correct way to play ragnarok is mainly related to kratos level In the main quests you can never be overpowered or over leveled The game is made in a way that you can never have enough resources to be overleveled When you start the game you will have the option between 2 armors sets , you can level up only one of them as you advance in the game but you can never go beyond the level of enemies you will encounter next Now for exemple when you go to alfheim the first time and finish the main quests , you will be able to go into the desert to do side quests , If you do all the side quests you will have a new full set of equipement (full armor , pomels , shield , artefact) that full set will be the exact level of enemies you gonna encounter next, you will also have enough resources to level up one full set you are already have to put it at same level as alfhein armor (so the game let you choose from here on to either continue with the armor you had already or go with the time stopping armor of alfheim) The set you choose will truly affect your gameplay for exemple if you go with the alfheim set you will be playing a lot more on last second dodges Again when you go to vanaheim after you do side quests , you will have lunda armor and enough resources to level up one set you already had into the level of the next enemies that gonna appear in the main quests (the gane let you choose here again to continue with the set you already had and improve it to the next level or go with lunda set from now on) so either continue with the last second dodge gameplay or go with bare handed combat now with lunda set (which i hate how there is no skill tree for it) For me thats how ragnarok is made to be played since its calculated exactly to always be at exact level of enemies and with only one old set and a new set to change you gameplay
@@KaptainKuba 🤣🤣 if that happens i would truly imagine you looking at your tv and be like "by the gods what have i become" But in all seriousness i completely understand why a lot dont like the rpg system specially if you are more used to hack n slash ,i mean each his own thing But truly playing the game asking yourself how was it made to be played ?what does the developers expect me to do here ? It can really change your view on the whole game mechanics and even understand a lot more about the game
Funny that's one of the things I didn't like about Ragnarok, I couldn't switch sets if I wanted to due to not having upgrade materials since they're limited and I'm of the opposite opinion, I SHOULD be overleveled because I'm taking my time to do sidequest, being Overleveled and having an easier time IS my reward. I eventually just decided to go for cooldowns and spamming abilities as I don't like New GOW combat's all that much, I don't like the Axe or Spear playstyles. Maybe OG GOW is simpler by modern standards but I have more fun getting combos higher, using OP magic (like in the OG, AoH is stupidly broken due to mitigating how many enemies can attack you etc), no filler and more (kinda like DMC, NG and Bayo, prob why I love that genre)
@@DeathXtremeHaseo i get what you are saying Its truly more about each his own taste here I love the og gameplay a lot i grow up with it and dmc games (which is my favorite gaming series) But as much as i love og gow gameplay i largely prefer norse gameplay Ragnarok was made with the idea of committing to one set until the game give yo u the option to have a new one , but if you choose a new one you will have to abandon the old set you had (at least until you finish the game) I find it a bit boring to just be overpowered it suited more the older games (like dmc) but with the new style of gow i dont think it suit this style , or at least not in the main story (they let you be overpowered in end game and ng+) But again each its taste Maybe i love it more like this since rpg is my fav genre of games
This video also demonstrates the interest for this gameplay style one of my oldest videos all of sudden gotten traction in the last few years and has gotten to over almost 200k views. This is one of reasons why I played god of war Ascension multiplayer, regardless of the balancing issues, it was fun fighting other players and trying to outplay your opponents, and I wish that multiplayer was further realized in the future, I wouldn't mind if they remastered the game only for the multiplayer. And further add ascension nailed down the combat, unfortunately while a lot people didn't like the story, I loved the combat. To this day I occasionally do play it once it while since the servers are still up.
To my understanding, two of the biggest actual problems with GOW Ascension's combat were - Finicky Parry move that does not feel good to use - On higher difficulties, enemies gain a lot of strength, defense and stun resistance that make it nigh unfairly difficult to build up the Special meter on the bottom right. Is that a correct assessment?
@@jurtheorc8117 yes one of the most annoying things in this game is some big bulky enemies, forgot the name but the ones that weld the big hammers, have this over shield mechanic that they invulnerable to attacks and causes kratos to stager if you hit them. And yes the parry system should of stayed the same in single player but the multiplayer it made sense.
Thats wy I use a lot of medusa head. shattering statues gives like 25orbs and more orbs. You will notice you will get different amount of orbs if you kill enemies with blades, artemis blade, medusa head or grabbing.
Great video, and plus, if anyone wants to play God of War RIGHT (not combat-wise, but lore/story wise): Don't play them in chronological order, play them as they were released. It's because of storytelling.
Excellent points. To others who played GoW "wrong": The Challenge of the Gods/Titans is a good way to build up your skill with the weapons and combos. IMHO, if you enjoy the game, you're playing it right. But you do enjoy it more as you get better at changing up your attack/defense strategies.
Did the spheres just align? I was just watching that video of yours reacting to under the mayo for the first time 1 hour ago LOL 😂 Also my man! I also just noticed how fun the combo meter is in these games it’s so good that it made me want to go to the higher difficulties
This reminds me of the Dynasty Warriors series. 'Boring' hack 'n slash, but even when you max out your favorite character and obtain their legendary weapon, max difficulty can knock you in your butt. On Normal you're clearing a stage in 5mins or less. On the hardest difficulty, you're doing everything you can just to finish and I'm pretty sure they give 45mins for you to do so. Definitely not a mindless button mashing game lol
eh. on my 7th playthrough i switched to the "cow of war". i was at the section with getting the medusa head. i kept spamming posiedons rage, got that combo meter to i think 1000? either way, i was able to max all of my stats at that point. which caused me to be able to max all stats and magic as soon as i got it. i noticed that all the orb chests turned to blue chests. the game knows how to reward the player. oh and before this run, i completed the game on the hardest difficulty. that was the most difficult ending to do for me, but i got that phone number. iykyk
Almost any game can be called a mindless button masher if you limit your playstyle. Even the newer GOW games with all of their complex button combos and whatever can still be played with L1, R1, and R2. I think the reason why it was especially a huge stereotype for the old GOW games is mainly due to it's story. It had a lot of stuff that people considered and still consider to be a "teenage boy power fantasy" with little to no depth. I'm not going to debate on that, but one thing I definitely can say is that the new GOW games definitely did retcon/add context to the story in ways that made people appreciate the old games (mainly GOW1 and probably 2) a lot more.
Technically red dead redemption one is red dead revolver 2. Great video though. But yeah idk how people seem to ignore the combos. That’s the reason of leveling up the weapons they unlock better moves.
This happen to me with Ragnarok actually I neveted cared for skill tree or armour as 2018 8 didn't need it. But with ratlgnarok I actually wanted to explore every little nook and cranny and fight bosses to keep upgrading as my skill was dependant on my armour and runics. Game got easier and manageable once I was upgrading stuff but before it was a chore to fight and I skipped wide bosses on purpose for just wanting to progress on story
You really brought back nostalgia for me in the beginning of the video with that pinball game my family had gotten a pc back in the day with no internet and that game plus solitaire was the only thing I played, btw gow 2018 won game of the year so we got are revenge on red dead years later 😅

Now beat it, with out powering up.
Give bullet storm a try. You get more points for killing enemies more brutally.
The only wrong way to play a game is forcing yourself to continue playing something you're not enjoying
@@Bluesine_R thats scary af man (honestly for me) our time is limited and i want to enjoy it putting hours into something that isnt fun ...

Dante’s Inferno was legendary!
Mostly agree, the only thing I dislike about the game is that part close to the end that pretty much feels like the challenge mode of god of war. As an optional thing it's okay, but in dantes inferno it's part of the main game and that shit is often just way too hard, even on normal. ^^;
thank you for making this point. my cousin and I have always been talking about this exact issue forever among friends... so nice to just hear it from someone else!
glad you enjoyed the video
Man discovers putting more effort in a game makes it more enjoyable. Fascinating
You'd be shocked how many people do the bare minimum or find one strategy that works and just cruise on by thinking they're doing the extent of what they can or should be doing lol
1:09 ZEUSTY!?
I get that, I just wished I had played it on harder difficulties sooner
@@KaptainKuba look at this from the other perspective - you have a lot of great time ahead with a new way of playing your favourite game :)
It's like you preserved the sweetest part of it for the right moment so you can keep it fresh for yourself even after all this time.
Nobody's beating even the first game with "mindless button mashing". Minotaurs, gorgons, and wraiths would fuck you up.
It's still mindless button mashing though? Dodge an attack and repeat the same move.

I was just like you then the gods of the gods of Olympus introduced me to zesty, I learned so much from his videos. I cant say I play now for the combo meter I just do the combo for the fun of the combo
Yeah Zesty also has taught me a lot of things
Figured that an hour after playing GOW for the first time 😂
EDIT: Milking enemies until they don't drop orbs works extremely well too

I never thought looking at Pinball with the Bath house soundtrack from GoW II in the background was something I didn't know I needed that much.
Thought this video was going to be ground breaking. Just turns out that you didn't understand a game mechanic.
From Easy/Normal casual, to CAMBAWS. Let’s pray that you move on to challenge running, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I recommend you try Devil May Cry, it's one of the best hack n slash games, my personal favorite btw
Yeah I loved 3 but I gotta give5 a second try
If your game could be summarized as "unbridled rage" ,you played the right way. If you managed to get a 667 hit combo, you played well.
Me with PSvita phat wayback 2015 has 18NG+ worth of Easy mode.
Something that i never bother myself 😅
So, i think "is there a wrong way to play video games?"
The answer is "yes" if you want to fully experience the whole game as the developer intended when they give you all the tools and mechanic.
I'm very surprised when i finish 100% Super Mario World by obtaining all coins and enter all the secret area (where it's really fun to do), it change the whole map is color 😂
So it's your freedom to how you play the game.
+I got to discover several things on this game's playstyle, strings and techs which were never catalogued anywhere, just by experimenting...
thats awesome to hear. I wish I would have play it on harder difficulties sooner

What's on your mind?
@@DanteBlack Soulstice, Genokids, Enenra, Immortal: and the Death that Follows, Cookie Cutter, Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Yasuke: A Lost Descendant.
Normally i'd give some quick rundowns on all of them but at the time of writing this i'm feeling a bit woozy. I'll leave it at the ones that have released :
- Soulstice is one of my favourite games in the entire hack-and-slash/character action genre despite issues of pacing, a few annoying enemy types (about three or four-- the others can have some annoyances, but all of the seven weapons total have utilities to make different enemy types more managable) Has a lot to offer on the front of gameplay, bosses, and a very good story.

You passed years playing a hack'n slash game without caring about combos? That's... interesting.
I still need god of war 1 and 2 and chains of olympus and ghost of sparta on ps5. In my country we dont get the psnow or psplus versions to play. I am still waiting for the remastered or remake versions of the old god of war games.
If you have a PC , just emulate it . Even a potato could run those old games .

It is ranged by:
+2 = 10-19 hits
+4 = 20-29 hits
+6 = 30-39 hits
+8 = 40-49 hits
+10 = 50-79 hits
+15 = 80-99 hits
+20 = 100 and above hits
(Could be more than +20, will probably edit this.)
And you don’t need to hit an enemy to gain +10 red orbs, as 10 isn’t the highest. Here are some ways you can gain orbs with the O button: (needs to be 10 hits to trigger)
+5 = Brutal Kill (Except in Chains of Olympus & Ascension)
+10 = Ruthless Kill (Except Acension)
+15 = Crushed (Kill enemies after petrifying them in GoW1 & 2)
Though this outdated information but it’s still good to know to those who still have the Greek games.
You have done what most gamers can never do and that is you have made your favourite game even better, I'm honestly jealous of you
As a Devil May Cry fan just started playing GOW in 2005, I knew that the more combo hits give more rewards. I'm surprised that you never knew this.
Pinball is the best example of simple game with really only one way to play.
For me that transformative video was mayo's. Ever since then I look at the mechanics of any game a lot more
As someone from a latino country (Honduras) i understand what it was like waiting months for games to come out.
Great video essay brother, I love GOW as well. The first three are my all time favorite games
OG GoW is one of my favorite game series and I never realized that either, haha
GoW2 is straight up better in Hard mode personally. Some of the most fun I had in a Character Action game. (I still like Bayonetta better though).
You are right, but I like to feel and lost in those landscapes and adventure more.
Same thing can be said about the norse games , mainly ragnarok
If you follow the path that developers created for us , the gameplay and rpg mechanics become so more interesting and truly change the gameplay
I played ragnarok for almost 1000h now and went into every secret and every corner of it in every difficulty and did all what can be done
And i can tell you the rpg mechanics in this game are truly well placed (this is coming from a guy who's favorite genre is rpg games)
To explain briefly the correct way to play ragnarok is mainly related to kratos level
In the main quests you can never be overpowered or over leveled
The game is made in a way that you can never have enough resources to be overleveled
When you start the game you will have the option between 2 armors sets , you can level up only one of them as you advance in the game but you can never go beyond the level of enemies you will encounter next
Now for exemple when you go to alfheim the first time and finish the main quests , you will be able to go into the desert to do side quests ,
If you do all the side quests you will have a new full set of equipement (full armor , pomels , shield , artefact) that full set will be the exact level of enemies you gonna encounter next, you will also have enough resources to level up one full set you are already have to put it at same level as alfhein armor (so the game let you choose from here on to either continue with the armor you had already or go with the time stopping armor of alfheim)
The set you choose will truly affect your gameplay for exemple if you go with the alfheim set you will be playing a lot more on last second dodges
Again when you go to vanaheim after you do side quests , you will have lunda armor and enough resources to level up one set you already had into the level of the next enemies that gonna appear in the main quests (the gane let you choose here again to continue with the set you already had and improve it to the next level or go with lunda set from now on) so either continue with the last second dodge gameplay or go with bare handed combat now with lunda set (which i hate how there is no skill tree for it)
For me thats how ragnarok is made to be played since its calculated exactly to always be at exact level of enemies and with only one old set and a new set to change you gameplay
You got some good points, maybe I'll change my opinion on the RPG system next 😂
@@KaptainKuba 🤣🤣 if that happens i would truly imagine you looking at your tv and be like "by the gods what have i become"
But in all seriousness i completely understand why a lot dont like the rpg system specially if you are more used to hack n slash ,i mean each his own thing
But truly playing the game asking yourself how was it made to be played ?what does the developers expect me to do here ?
@@DeathXtremeHaseo i get what you are saying
Its truly more about each his own taste here
I love the og gameplay a lot i grow up with it and dmc games (which is my favorite gaming series)
But as much as i love og gow gameplay i largely prefer norse gameplay
Ragnarok was made with the idea of committing to one set until the game give yo u the option to have a new one , but if you choose a new one you will have to abandon the old set you had (at least until you finish the game)
I find it a bit boring to just be overpowered it suited more the older games (like dmc) but with the new style of gow i dont think it suit this style , or at least not in the main story (they let you be overpowered in end game and ng+)
But again each its taste
Maybe i love it more like this since rpg is my fav genre of games
To my understanding, two of the biggest actual problems with GOW Ascension's combat were
- Finicky Parry move that does not feel good to use
- On higher difficulties, enemies gain a lot of strength, defense and stun resistance that make it nigh unfairly difficult to build up the Special meter on the bottom right.
2:00 SAME haha, i used to have the half of a hanger and I used it as axe one side and weapon the other killing imaginary bosses and zombies
Thats wy I use a lot of medusa head. shattering statues gives like 25orbs and more orbs. You will notice you will get different amount of orbs if you kill enemies with blades, artemis blade, medusa head or grabbing.
I've always button-mashed through hack-and-slash games. God Of War made me realise that by not using combos, I'm missing out on like half of the game.
The life long white belt
"He only knows the fundamentals"
"Yeah, but he REALLY knows the fundamentals!"
Great video, and plus, if anyone wants to play God of War RIGHT (not combat-wise, but lore/story wise): Don't play them in chronological order, play them as they were released. It's because of storytelling.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had a stick *sword* collection as a kid!
2:02 I used to used my Sharpeners as characters and Pencils as swords or lazer beams😂
Excellent points. To others who played GoW "wrong": The Challenge of the Gods/Titans is a good way to build up your skill with the weapons and combos. IMHO, if you enjoy the game, you're playing it right. But you do enjoy it more as you get better at changing up your attack/defense strategies.
No thanks. That’s o my for sadists who have nothing better to do. The game is not well made enough to bother with harder difficulty
Congratulations, you've become a true fan of God of War! A video playing the game will be even more awesome now.
Ff7 is my favorite game but GOW is my favorite franchise
Did the spheres just align? I was just watching that video of yours reacting to under the mayo for the first time 1 hour ago LOL 😂
Also my man! I also just noticed how fun the combo meter is in these games it’s so good that it made me want to go to the higher difficulties
Guess I'm the only guy that played for the combo meter? This was a concept I was always aware of.
I think my old best friend understood.
He had completed all the Trials of Olympus in the first fame before we even got a teaser for 2.
I keep having to watch RUclips walkthroughs in order to advance to next section in GOW
Gw3 is way better than red redemption. Is a unique experience
You really brought back nostalgia for me in the beginning of the video with that pinball game my family had gotten a pc back in the day with no internet and that game plus solitaire was the only thing I played, btw gow 2018 won game of the year so we got are revenge on red dead years later 😅
Gow3 had Deimos skin. Red orbs have no value, and the only way to get them is to do crazy combos. This skin makes the Nemesis Whip trully shine
i love how u realised game journalists have been attack great games and falsely discrediting them as being bad or lame. and they are doing it and causing games to become inferior to the games that came b4
