- Winnipeg Jets prospect Rutger McGroarty has made it public that he wants to get away from the Winnipeg Jets.
McGroarty starred at the University of Michigan and also with Team USA in the World Juniors.
Should New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald inquire on trading for this kid?
We are a little more than 24 hours away from the NHL Draft, where the NJ Devils hold the #10 Overall pick.

The absolite maximum I'd give in a trade deal would be taking Rutger McGroarty and Winnipeg's #37 pick. But honest!y, I think we could get more back while giving up less for McGroarty.

Move Palat amd Smith. Smith will be a UFA buy see if we can get a late pick... probably not since his stock is comparable to a bucket of pucks. Would love a 5 year signing of soon to be UFA Zadarov. We need mean defense. ALSO we never found a replacement for Mcleod. Absolutely bottom 6 stud and faceoff master. That was such a hit and i dont think some realize it.
Listen, I am looking for men who have served their bit in NHL. No kids are good enough. We either walk the walk or we go home. Dutch the youth dev this year, and go for proven players.
Boucher was all scoring and low level skating, now he is thriving in the KHL. It’s a different beast in the KHL.

We got our Zadorov 😂 Devils got a steak with Anton Silayez next Chara 6 foot 7 and apparently he has really good footwork skater they compared him to Jay Bowmaster mixed with Chara

@sst6601 Some people have speculated the Luke Hughes contract to be even more than that. I was thinking it was going to be around $7M as well.

@headsuphockeypodcast2707 I believe Fitz is looking to move some salary out, so he could fit Necas if he wanted. I just hope he has no interest in doing this. Necas is NOT heavier, edgier, more violent.
I've said this before, but I'd try to swap Holtz for McGroarty (maybe add in a 3rd or something similar). I like Holtz, but he's a project that at this point would do better as a trade piece and giving him a chance to play elsewhere would help him more than struggling to find a spot in the lineup. Does McGroarty have improvements to make? Sure, but put him in Utica to work on those issues and get him up to NHL readiness. If he doesn't pan out to be the top end of what he was projected to be, then what's the worst that happens? He ends up being a bottom 6 player. Pretty much the same situation with Holtz right now so it sure doesn't hurt NJ. I think it's a risk worth taking. But no, absolutely NO WAY that the #10 pick should be used to get him. I'd rather see that pick get used in the draft at this point. I don't think it's really necessary to trade it unless there's an offer that can't be turned down. I'd rather see Fitz draft at #10 and go hunting in free agency since there will be a lot of options there and it won't cost assets.
@WaltBTB.... The issue is that McGroarty is asking to be placed in the NHL right away, and supposedly refuses to play in the AHL. That's a problem for me. I want him to get his feet wet in Utica first. If he blows people away in the first two months, then bring him up and keep him here.

If I were in Fitz's shoes, I would make it clear to him that if the Devils are going to take a chance on him and give him this opportunity, then he's got to earn it by going along with my gameplan. If he's truly NHL ready, then he can prove it fast. Hell, camp and preseason will show how ready he is.

Rutger would be cap friendly, you didn’t bring up the money value. He brings beef!! I have been following Rutger and I believe he is NHL ready. He has many intangibles like leadership, and grit.

Ace, thanks for the in depth dive! The foot speed is obviously a concern but I do think he could help this year. Also, his leadership and work ethic would be a nice addition. I figured he and Holtz are about the same speed and could be linemates. Lol
@michaels7134..... I know McGroarty's foot speed was a concern in his draft year, but he has definitely worked on that area of his game this past year, and it has improved. The one thing I am not comfortable with is him supposedly not being willing to play in the AHL. I would like some time to see him adjust to the pro game before being handed an NHL spot. These kids today expect everything to be handed to them, and it's a poisonous mindset IMHO.

i would say no. NJ as it is right now is a playoff team looking to be a possible contender. if they trade pick 10 it has to be for a known commodity that can step in an make a difference. I watched every UofM playoff game and i saw the same thing the WPG brass did. He is not ready to be an NHL player. McGroaty was virtually invisible while Nazar and brindley were everywhere and difference makers. this is a huge pass for me.

@@runninwiththedevils simple answer, yes BUT as he should. no one really knows what the issue is but what we know is everyone has pretty much left UofM. so he would be returning to a team that most likely will not be a frozen four participant and all is buddys are gone. a team like NJ or WPG would most likely put him in the AHL for 1 to 2 seasons. he is probably hoping some mediocre team will trade for him and play him because they have a need. this draft is gonna be crazy and i would rather have Beckett Sennecke or Berkly Catton with the 10 pick if i am NJ.

@ARusso22TV I don't think the Saros extension necessarily means that he won't be traded. With a deal in place (at lower than what many thought he was going to be looking for) Saros' trade value is higher now. Will be very interesting to see how Nashville plays this. I think I would trade the 10th for Askarov

But if it came down to either drafting the pick or making this trade? Not unreasonable, in the sense that he is at least more of a sure thing than any guy we are drafting at 10.

@junglestatic While it is hard to proclaim any player a "sure thing", I think there will be guys available at the #10 slot that SEEM more of a sure thing than McGroarty
If deal is 10th and Holtz for Ehlers, Mcgroarty and the 37th then I'm taking it all day. I would also do it for Casey straight up.
Largely with you though. Dream scenario is we use the 10th for Hagel from tampa or Kyrou from St. Louis(probably in a package deal).
