ear Bobby Watson,I hope this message finds you well. My name is Charles E., and I wanted to take a moment to express my deep admiration and appreciation for you and the band Rufus.I first discovered Rufus when I was nine years old, and I remember being captivated by the album cover. Seeing you, Andre Fisher, and my favorite, Chaka Khan, inspired me in ways I can't fully express. Your music has been a significant part of my life, providing joy, comfort, and inspiration through the years.I've recently been revisiting your work and learning more about the challenges and battles the band faced. It's incredible to see how you persevered and continued to create such beautiful, timeless music. As a loyal fan, I would love the opportunity to connect with you and the band members, to share my gratitude and hear more about your journey. Your kindness and talent have always shone through your music, and it would mean the world to me to become friends with such extraordinary artists.Thank you for the music and the memories.Warm regards,Charles E.

I've always loved Mr. Bobby Watson's bass playing (the solos and bass riffs on "Dance Wit Me" are just off the charts)! Ms.Chaka Khan is one of a kind, and so is the band Rufus--one of the best rhythm sections in the business. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you, Ms. Khan, and to all of the members of the great groove masters band, Rufus.

This is what has been missing from my adoration for Rufus, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, and Rufus and Chaka the background stories of how the songs came to be. I've always been so into Chaka's vocals, but then in later years I found myself more and more mesmerized by the music behind her voice and felt you guys are just as phenomenal. Incidentally, I'm glad you're showing your white hair because it reminds you've been here almost my whole life!

I really loved the insight you offer sharing your experiences within the group. So sad to hear how amateurish practices and bad spending caused the destruction of the band. In a perfect world, all of you could have still knocked it out the park to packed audiences to this day. I just saw EFW and Santana at Jones Beach in NYC this past weekend. The three original members have been together for 50 YEARS and Santana is 75 YEARS old and still playing with fire. So I know if Rufus and Chaka was together with good spirits, I have no doubt the same exact thing would happen as well. Many continued blessings in you and your family's lives and as a bass player as well, your iconic line on "Rock With You" to me is one of the truest examples of groove, pocket and taste around. 🙏🏾

I grew up on Rufus and always thought they had some of the most soulful songs of the 70's! As a DJ I used to do a Bobby & Tony (Rufus) vs Nile & Bernard (Chic). After watching this I think I figured out why Rufus has not been accepted in the Rock and Roll HOF. If only Rufus could have put the cherry on top with that 60 city tour ... the media would've seen that you deserve to be . Thank you for your musical contribution.

Wow, Mr. Bobby Watson. A featured player in my favorite group of all-time: Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. I am 48 years old and when I 18, I purchased Rufus' debut album on CD. And from the 1st song "Keep It Comin'", it was all over. I immediately fell in love with this band. I made it my business to know everyone's name. Chaka, i already knew, but there was Al Ciner, Kevin Murphy, Tony Maiden, Dennis Belfield and Bobby Watson. Their music was very much alive and each musician was on fire. With each passing song the listener comes to the realization that Rufus is the definition of a cohesive band. Everyone is essential and a integral part of this collective. I have adored them for over 30 years. Brother Bobby, thanks for sharing your stories. I appreciate you taking the time to share. There's a reason why you were one of the musicians called on to bring "Off The Wall" to fruition. You are the best. And based on what I know about Quincy Jones, he doesn't half-step when picking the the line-up for his productions. GOD bless you, Bobby. Watching this was definitely a delight.

Wow. Mr Watson. I kinda stumbled onto your channel and I am so very glad that I did. You were always my favorite band member because you were on bass and seemed to have a strong resemblance to my older brother who had been killed in Vietnam. I naturally gravitated that way.
I had no idea that Rene was your brother. I did buy that album back in the 1980s. I had just gotten out of the Marines. I fell in love with Angela. She was one tasty little bird! What happened to those two?
It’s so good to see my favorite Rufus musician doing well, looking great and happily reflecting on his long illustrious career. This was indeed a treat and now I get to watch some more of your videos. You know, back in the early 1970s, my dream was to be a recording engineer. I worked with several bands in the DC area as a roadie and sound man. I built speakers and repaired microphones and guitars and such. The bands were Friction and Starpoint. Unfortunately, I had no idea of how racist that part of the music industry was. When I encountered a great deal of pushback, trying get an apprenticeship, I didn’t know what to do. So I joined the Marines and repaired radios for 4 years getting a solid understanding of electronics way beyond what I understood previously. I say all that to say that I can appreciate what you and all the others, including my true love Chaka, went through and probably still have to deal with.
I am a huge Chaka supporter and I have been aware of her challenges and flaws up close and far away. She is indeed something special and so are you sir. Always admired your presentation and bass playing. Really great to see you here mastering this technology.

I've always wanted Rufus to get together again with Chaka Khan for a reunion tour one last time. I know everyone have gone their separate ways, to pursued other opportunities in their music careers, and probably doesn't want to revisit the bad experiences from the past. It will a good time to make amends and peace with each other before it's too late. A reunion tour can happen because they were like family. The fans would love it, for sure. Their last studio album: Camouflage, released in 1981 was great.

I really appreciate the story Bobby.
I totally understand how no one in their right mind would want to dwell on all of that toxicity and unnecessary loss or to go about spreading that energy at large.
In short , it’s the perfect recipe for the doldrums and the best thing is to keep it moving and not let it become a a well known conversation you like to have with just random people- lol
Mannn I sure wish we could hang sometimes , probably writing , whether we had planned to do any writing or not lol.
Plus , when you’re new in any big town , a sort of “point” guy/person-(not a whole chaperone) - is a huge blessing.
After a few days of observing how you move about town , that would likely become my model for navigating the culture-in-general as I went about my way.
Great story telling as always and this was the best because audience s want closure too. hahahaha
P.S. I looked for you the other day on the War set
w/ EWF that Verdines wife Shelly filmed on her iPhone but she didn’t get a good close up that time ,plus, she was vibing to War herself -lol
The song “Why can’t we be friends” was being performed in the clip.
P.P.S.Also , I happen to have payed attentions to N8 (East) and Lionel Richies tutorial on how not to piss of Quincy Jones by being too pushy/difficult.
It simply isn’t the reason they call anyone.🤷🏾‍♂️

"here"; when we don't use others's negative attempts to destroy us/hurt - to motivate us to rise above...it does become poisonous/toxic...and no matter how much we say "aww that didn't really hurt", when we keep repeating it, its so very apparent it did & worse, still does & is eroding us. Reminds me of a story my grampa told me, I was 5, "when a jack ass kicks you...consider the source" & another 'story' - a farmer had a donkey, the donkey had served him well, but one day, while working, the animal fell into a large well & started to "cry out", instead of the farmer valuing him & trying to save him, he got tired of hearing him "cry"...so he started throwing dirt down the hole to bury him/shut him up...the donkey saw a figure holding a shovel & said, "wonderful my master is coming to save me", but instead - a large amount of dirt landed on the top of his head, he quieted down & shook it off...then, each time, climbing on TOP of the dirt the farmer threw down instead of sulking, he kept using his energy to climb on top & pack it down...daily the farmer would throw down the dirt...after a few shovels, the donkey realized, "he's not trying to save me, he's trying to BURY ME"!! 😆 So EVERY DAY...the farmer threw dirt down the hole, the donkey, shook it off, stood on top of it & packed it down... until FINALLY the donkey was high enough to step out & walk away to freedom!!! Moral of the story...well kinda apparent...at least it was for me! Story's like these stick with children, I thank God for my grampa! I've lived my entire life like that...free🙂 been crapped on so much, sometimes I though I was a bird perch 🤣😂...but guess what...like Maya Angelo use to say..."Still I rise"... perhaps hearing the same thing from you, sir...BW may LISTEN...oh he "heard" me...but apparently coming from me, he didn't LISTEN. I really respect BW, he's just a talented, gifted & kind little "pussy cat"...just wears his heart on his sleeve!! And somehow finds it difficult, both to forgive & move on...it was once said...unforgiveness is like taking poison & expecting the other person to die. Forgiveness doesn't mean we are saying, oh well & don't acknowledge we've been crapped on - it just frees us from the hold their 💩 has on us & it's smell. Mr. Shelby, ya all go write some music & get that fresh air goin! Best to you both!!

Very interesting interview. I grew up listening to and enjoying the music of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan & Chaka Khan as a solo artist. Like everyone else I could not wait for the reunion tour, but unfortunately it never happened. How is it that Chaka Khan can tour singing all the highlights that were made when the group was together and will only sing 1 or 2 songs from her solo career ? It's like her emphasis is on singing the groups hits versus singing songs from her solo career or a combination of both. I love me some Chaka Khan ! ! She has amazing songs as a solo artist.

Hmmmm, I also used to wonder why she felt so comfortable touring w Rufus and the opposite when she had her solo band... while rehearsing with those musicians she was always stressed ?? It just felt natural cause we grew up together I guess ... But I'm like you, I want to hear "I feel for you" and "What cha gonna do for me" and of course "I'm every Woman" if I went to her live show !!

I'd also like to declare that as far as the 70's went, RUFUS was tops and there were killer bands, but they didn't have Clare Fischer either..he changed the landscape of R&B. I have heard songs that didn't make Ask Rufus, including Clare's orchestral intro, a sketch demo of a song called "Baby" which just blew my mind and "A Burnin Love" which the bridge just killed me! Hi Kevin, I was told by Bruce Swedien (Engineer) that my bass made some of Michael's tunes too R&B sounding (Funk) , LOL !! If you can believe it, I played on "Off The Wall" (gotta leave that 9 to 5 upon the shelf) and I think Girlfriend?, I also played bass on "Just Once" a James single and got replaced by Greg Philligains Synth Bass ! Bruce told me that "Just Once" with my bass was sounding like a "Barry White" track which was a compliment to me, but Quincy often recorded over 120 tracks on all of his productions during that time, he liked to keep the sound direction with the music on the top of the charts at the time - and no matter how good the tunes felt, he wanted that "Pop" sound that was people were buying at that time !!!! I too would love to hear my bass on the Two Michael Jackson tunes I played on that I got replaced, also "Just Once" the James Ingram track - Claire Fischer was an Alien from Venus, He was not an Earthman !! haha His arrangements just took our Rythym tracks to another Level. I love every song on "Ask Rufus" .. Definitely my favorite Rufus Album , The record company had a fire in one of their warehouses and I think our original tapes were destroyed?? What a cool thing that would be to go and grab that music and do some kind of out-takes CD and release it .. That MCA vault had Rufus Chaka gold in it ~

@@myvidworld1 wow. First off. Thank you for responding. You guys are part of the fabric of my childhood. I'm a 70's baby (from the same year as Rufusized). I would say Ask Rufus was the best album to come out of 77 with your then label mates' "Aja" coming in 2nd. I am a music nerd and fan of Bruce and Q's sonic signature sound. I thought I heard electric bass on "Just Once" as Abe Laboriel is credited on the album. But, I didn't have the fortune of being in those sessions, I was just a little kid then.
As far as whatever the fire at MCA destroyed. I know for an absolute fact that some of the "Ask Rufus" reels survived and I know where you may be able to get your ears onto them. I'm sure you'd probably like that. Send me an email and I'll give the info that I have on it My email is kevin.gimmemusic@gmail.com. I would be MORE than happy to try to reconnect you to that stuff. Thanks again for responding, all the great bass work (especially "Destiny") and the lifetime of good memories connected to the music y'all provided to my childhood that I listen to, to this very day.

I circled back to this video because I keep seeing your name turning up in some interesting places. Most recently, I saw your and Tony Maiden’s names in the credits of Ronnie McNeir’s first album on RCA. I’ve been hearing “In the Summertime” quite a bit via Spotify. I looked upthe album to see who was playing on the album, and lo and behold!

That is soooooo sad a man would let his wife destroy legendary musicians to a legendary singer re-connecting for their many many fans - just because HE don't have the "testicular fortitude" to sit her down and put her in her place >>> because she wasn't in the right place from the jump.
I'm glad you and the rest of the band are well tho 👍🏾👍🏾
Make sure you reach out to the youth that really want to learn great music like yours, - instead of seeking to be like the majority just rhyming filthy lyrics over a beat and calling that junk "music".
    PEACE!!!

I have to ask...what are you doing to stay in shape? You have always looked very fit, going all the way back to the Rufus days. And what was your first reaction to Chaka when you saw her? Was she immediately like a sister since yall were like family? Or did you see her the way every Black man between the age of puberty and 40 saw her when she came out?

thank you D T , I do laps in the pool 2 to 3 days a week and shoot free throws (100 at a time) just to keep the blood running ,, haha About Chaka, my first reaction was "Wow a little Aretha Franklin", she was just a powerhouse of a singer, and yes my feelings in the beginning were to protect her as a baby sister because most of the attention in the early Rufus days was put on her. I have to say too D T that some of those outfits she would wear made all us big brothers look at her in a different light !!! LOL
