I always like to hear how everything got started. You should be proud, because the group RUFUS was jut out of this world!!! The seventies had great music, all these soul groups, but then came Rufus, Earth, wind and Fire and Commodores. They brought that “funk” soul to the scene. I just listened to “Stop on by” , what a sound!!! Thank you for this video!
Bobby, your talking book about Rufus with Chaka Khan is awesome! Thank you!!! Over the years, I'd heard Chaka allude to much of what you'd shared, but it's nice to get another perspective and the details she couldn't remember. How about a walk-thru of the Rufus albums, starting with Rufusized, detailing the highlights of the recording sessions for each album. Song choices, arrangements and touring to support each record. In addition, share your thoughts on the evolution of the Rufus sound through the years. Personal favorites by Rufus are Rufusized, Ask Rufus, Masterjam and Stompin At The Savoy! Pretty much in that order. I was intrigued by Camouflage. Loved the mix and Chaka's vocals, but not the songs, as much. Would love to hear more on the back story of each of these recordings.
I love these wonderful Rufus Chronicles, you have such a natural gift of bringing life to a story. You should consider writing a book, high lighting your life with Rufus. Please consider coming to the NYC area for a 50th Anniversary Rufus Tour. It would be great if you can get Chaka on board. NYC loves Rufus and Chaka Khan. She was just given the key to the City last fall. Happy Anniversary Bobby and yes your should feel proud of being a member of such a phenomenal band. I am very great full that the stars aligned bringing all of you together in the Fall of 1973, where you would create some of the greatest music of the 20th Century. The music of Rufus has been a part of my life for 5 decades. It has enriched my life bringing me many hours of entertainment and pure joy. I loved Rufus' live performances, they were always stellar. I still remember the last concert at the Savoy Manner in 1983 in NYC, it was outstanding! Thank you for sharing and keep these chronicles coming.
Wow, Robin you were at the Savoy ... that was such a fun gig over 2 days and it was extra fun because all the fans filled the seats and rocked that theatre .. I have some video of the soundcheck somewhere here, I will look for it and post it ,, all of us acting silly ...
@@myvidworld1 I believe I was at the Sunday night concert. It was taped live and if I remember correctly, Chaka wore a green Peter Pan outfit. She jumped on a table and a man presented her with roses. The musicianship was outstanding. Soon thereafter, The Savoy closed. This was at least 40 years ago. There was nothing like being at a Rufus and Chaka concert!!!
You and the boys will always be one of my favorite bands. You guys taught me how to play R&B and your bass playing always knocked me out. I bought every record you did including the stuff w/o CK.
First of all I felt like I was hanging out and listening to my uncle- great stuff- why no one has ever ever told the history of this great band is beyond me- This is fascinating stuff to hear - You were there, you are a good storyteller -write the book man- through the years I have had run ins with the Mighty Khan and each time she enchanted me even more- what a lady!!! I work at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and we just had a special event with Chaka on her birthday and I met her again and at 70 she is even more beautiful than ever- anyway - all that led up to her being inducted into the Hall- I tried and others as well to have Rufus and Chaka inducted as a group , but to no avail- the whole band deserves to be there. Hopefully Miss Khan will reach out to you and others (who can be there) to play with her at the 2023 ceremony to be held in NYC NOV 2023 -Chaka posted on her facebook "Who should do her induction" I say you and the guys in the band. God Bless you Mr Watson
Wow. thats great, I am going to see her in July and ask what the deal is ... I'm so glad you like these little videos, I have so much fun remembering and talking about the beginning days of Rufus Chaka .. Not sure I can write a book? but it would be fun trying ~
When I first heard RUFUS I immediately loved their style.Bobby bass lines was phenomenal..there was a good chemistry with dat band.Thank you Bobby for your small talk.
this was such a great story of and how you and my very favorite band got together from the start and of course hearing about my most favorite vocalist on the planet Chaka. and yes please continue to play until y’all can’t play no mo!! there is no sound like the sounds you all created together before or since. very unique vibe. the world still needs to hear real musicians who have paved the way! thanks for sharing your version of “once you got started!! 😅. 🎼🥰👄😘❤
Mr. Bobby Watson, I am a die hard fan of Rufus and Chaka Khan's music. You bet that we, your fans, would come out and support you and the guys. I have every album that you recorded, and this phenomenal band provided the canvas and the launching pad for one of the greatest vocal stylists on the planet. Keep me posted. 😊
As always, thanks again❤ for sharing. As you must know, these stories are priceless. I'm even happier than you that the universe connected you with Rufus and Chaka. Incidentally, I was a 9 year old who borrowed Stevie Wonder's Music Of My Mind, The Jackson 5, and both Rufus's album, from the Library, and they almost had to come look for me to give those albums back. I also would love to see the group that provided the main soundtrack of my life. Whichever band member who can no longer play can feel free to just sit on the stage because we already know their capabilities. Even though I was definitely following Chaka in her solo career, I still bought the Numbers and Party 'Til You're Broke albums, I guess, because of separation anxiety! On the 25th of this month in 1980, I first saw Rufus with Narada Michael Walden and The Brothers Johnson in concert at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic N.J. and I still have the ticket and flyer!
Well blow my mind ms Micia .. You actually kept the ticket and flyer? I am so proud of you ,, Now I know we gotta come out play again ~ "Numbers and party till you're Broke", I thought I was the only one in the whole USA to have those albums /
When tell me something good came out i always thought that I was hearing Stevie Wonder sing i said to myself this sounds just like Stevie Wonder I like Stevie Wonder song and then my brother we all used to listen to to that song cuz my dad had a gas station over on Ashland was called Enco conner brothers. then it's a wonder you guys never stopped there off of I think Ashland or Halsted I forgot and tell me something good will come on and we will all be singing and then I will go stay with my brother on the weekend and then this girl would play the whole album my brother's neighbor downstairs will play the whole album so i wasn't familiar until I got older and I said oh that's what she was playing these songs like please pardon me and all of the songs from the tell Me Something Good album and wow i learned these songs right now I'm 60 I'll be 60 in November and I think I was about 9 years old at the time when I fell in love with Chaka Khan and all you guys and also I used to think that i said wow if they're singing background those guys sound like girls I always thought that you guys I said they sound just like girls when you sing in the background but actually that was Chaka Khan's background vocals I had to learn that that's nice I love that group I love her harmonizing I love everything about I love your whole story I live in Los Angeles now and I've been here over 30 years and we came so far so you got any gigs oh I got a question are you probably don't know when Paulette found Chaka did Paulette teacher the sounds and teacher how to make those beautiful harmonizing songs and she sings cuz this is all new to me about the Paulette story wow i listen to her music before and it sounds good one of my favorite Rufus & Chaka songs is any love. They're also was a load of hits on that camouflage album I don't know why that wasn't marketed well but better together it's one of my favorite songs off of that especially when at the end towards the end how Chaka Khan do that when she come in on that verse i don't know what she's saying but I sure would love those words I just have to make it up and then i guess her background vocals helps keep a great chorus i love that song better Together and you guys are better together I miss you. I also love what am I missing.
Hey Bobby, thanks for sharing some of those experiences with us! Sure you don't need us to tell you how important that era of funk & soul was and how current it is, yet again. I personally grew up in Scotland, and that music permeated everything back then--truly a world-wide phenomenon, and Rufus were a big part of it. Live in San Francisco now, and would LOVE to hear the you back out there. I have had the chance to experience a lot of the resurgence and would jump at the chance to see you out there.
Absolutely! That music is and will always be priceless. I grew up on this music and would love to hear you guys and gals play all your hits live I’m from Chicago. Also alpine valley would be nice in East Troy Wisconsin!!!!!!
Bobby that would be so great to see and for the up and coming kats to see greatness I would pay good money to go see the greatest Band that has meant so much to me. From your #1 fan
@@myvidworld1 yes, it’s still going. They have some great music. Rufus should play there, or perhaps the Jazz Cafe, which has more soul, funk and R&B acts.
Hey Bobby, Nothing would be better that a night at the Hollywood Bowl listing to Rufus. I'm in! My cousins and I got into the Whisky to see you guys in one of the early shows (maybe '74?) - Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen! One of the cousins I was with married Andre .Small world...
Bobby, this is so much of what I've ALWAYS wanted to know (more) about Rufus (and CK). These are the stories I would expect to get from you if I met you on a long airline flight. It's kind of a plus that I don't even have to ask the questions. Thanks for more elucidation about the players and pieces in this great and sort of mystery band.
Awwww man Mr. Cordell, I love seeing comments like yours, from the 10 years I spent in Rufus it all seemed like a whirlwind ,,, but now I am older and can look back on these experiences and enjoy telling the stories as much as you like hearing them .. Hope we meet on a flight to Hawaii my friend ~
@@myvidworld1 Thanks my man. Almost met you one night (few years ago) when you were playing a few Rufus songs at a club on Pico Blvd. in L.A. (My man Clyde Talley notified me, and I came running.). Don't be surprised to see another comment from me on some other videos. One of the best bands ever, I have pso many compliments, commentary and questions to say and ask. Peace.
YES!!! I listen to Rufus albums now! I graduated H.S. in 1974. I purchased Rags to Rufus album @ Woolworth downtown Wichita, KS. YES, I would love for you guys to play together again!!!
Man, this is so awesome to hear. These background stories of how Rufus became Rufus. I love Rufus’ music and especially your bass playing. Their groovy as hell and helped the band fly above the ground.
Keep the stories coming! This story got the wheels turning with regard to the evolution of Rufus. Specifically, the DRUMMERS! You played with with some great drummers in Rufus. I’d be interested in hearing what was like working with them: Andrew Fischer, Moon Calhoun, and John Robinson.
Excellent idea Odawg, talking about the 3 Rufus Drummers and their influence and contributions to the grooves !! Thanks for the idea, I'll study a little bit and do a short video talking about the Rufus Drummers,, Stand By !!
I would love it. Bobby you have been a favorite bass player of mine for a long, long time. It's hard to say which is my very favorite, but "Once You Get Started" is hard to beat. Keep it up!
You've Got The Luv, is my go to Rufus/Chaka song. Who's doing that amazing guitar solo and how is the bass being recorded bacause l always try to get that bass distorted tone, but to no avail lol. Much thanks for the stories behind the music we love!
guitar solo is Al Ciner, he had a nice touch and feel on all the early Rufus stuff, and of course Ray Parker is playing the rhythm guitar on there, not sure how Dennis recorded the bass? Dennis Belfield was the bassist on "You Got The Love" ,, I do know that on "Tellmesomethingood" he plugged his bass into a Fender Rhodes piano and you can hear the bass moving from side to side in the mix (very cool experimenting) ..
Wow!!! Bobby!!! So, so happy I came across this video you blessed us with. I've been angry with Rufus (and Chaka) for a VERY long time, but have never forsaken ya'll. The day I heard news of the disbandment was sooooooo hard for me. I was devastated. Many years ago I shared how I discovered Rufus, then someone stole MY story, so I haven't shared it since on social. However, I will say that I was eleven or so when I heard "Whoever's thrilling You Is Killing Me" and my life changed forever! -- That band, that VOICE. Rufus and Ella Fitzgerald inspired me to pursue a career in music; about five bands and some decades later I'm still truck'n. I was almost front and center at the Rufus' reunion performance in Chicago at Arie Crown Theater. That was a dream come true. I believe Chaka announced you guys were gonna release a reunion album, but it never came to be (sadly). There was a time I had committed every lyric to memory from every album. I could tell you in what order each song appeared. I could tell you who mixed and mastered, who arranged the horns, and who arranged those gorgeous strings. I could tell you what member wrote what song. Everything about Rufus' albums was signature. The sound was totally unique. The very first concert I ever attended was "Rufus and Chaka Khan." The Brother's Johnson opened the show, and it was also at the Aire Crown (I believe). Like I said earlier, I have been angry with Rufus (and when I say Rufus I mean CK as well) for a very long time for breaking up. I felt like you guys had totally abandoned the your fans. I felt like whatever issues you guys were facing, you should have been able to resolve, if for no one else, for the fans. Chaka is a force to be reckon with, no doubt, but NOTHING compares to the magic of Rufus and Chaka Khan--NOTHING! "Ask Rufus" is a stunning album. In my opinion one of the best albums ever recorded. Lastly, and embarrassingly, I was so distraught over the breakup that I recorded an Acapella cassette and sent it to your management when I was a kid. I wanted to do my part to keep Rufus alive. LOL I only pray that cassette NEVER reached you are any other band members. LOL. Anyways, I'm rambling, but Love you guys to pieces. Thanks, again, and YES to a reunion of ANY kind. LovePeace&Light, Mykaèl.
Such a beautiful story here, I'm so happy to see it ,,, You say the obvious, "The band Rufus & CK should be playing together these days ,, Believe me I agree with you 100% .. I am working on bringing all of us guys back together (including Tony Maiden who has lost his hands but can still sing?) with our baby sister singing with us. I need your prayers and positive thoughts ,, When I read your comment, I see a true Rufus Chaka Fan, I am so happy to meet you on here and stick with me .. I hope to be delivering some good news soon about a reunion ~
Bobby, love your videos! I enjoy hearing the stories of how artists get started. Wish you guys could resolve your differences. You guys could make a killing doing a Vegas stint and/or a final Rufus and Chaka tour. I don't get people sometimes.
I'm with you on this Mr. Grover ... I am still working on the idea of Rufus members together with Ck playing Vegas or a short tour ... We're almost there ,,, maybe next "Spring" !!
Yes! Reunion time. Chaka was just on the Jennifer Hudson show and when showed a picture of Rufus she had a genuine, bittersweet expression/smile on her face whilst being asked about the band
Hey Watson, haven't heard it in years... was really listening to bass line in Rock with you... That was sweet sir! I SEE, can realky (hear) why he chose you over Johnson (God rest his soul - he was a monster in his own right). Hope you and the girls/family are healthy & sound/well.
Hello Bobby, man it's great to see you, did you attend Jefferson high school in south central a long with Tony ? This is Walter Glover hopefully you will remember me from Mr. Hoards band class. We crossed paths in Hollywood a few times but anyway it's wonderful to see you again, stay safe and God bless.
Yup, I can't remember your face cause that was almost 60 years ago, but I was in Mr Hoards class, Man thank you for appearing on the radar again, this is so heartwarming my brother ~
Rufus is one of my favorite bands of all time! One of the bands I play in is a cover band and I've managed to put 4 Rufus songs in the set! I was too young to catch Rufus prior to 1983 but I was lucky enough to catch the Rufus reunion on Sept 30, 2001 in Concord, CA. You guys were awesome! I wish you would have headlined that show instead of EWF! If you put something together with the guys from Rufus I would be there in a heartbeat! Thanks for posting these videos Bobby! I love hearing the stories, keep them coming!
Yes Yes Yes , your comment is making me have a great Saturday morning, I already started working on the re-union idea on paper (for now), because people like you contraversi, would support ,, stand by
For sure would love to see you, Hawk, John and Andre get it back bumpin'. I'd bring all my friends. Wasn't Tony Bennett still out there performing and recording in his 90"'s? You all still got 20+ years to put it together. Can't wait to buy my tickets.
Man I'm sitting here watching your video and I believe that you should play your base as long as you possibly can, Rufus was one of the best bands I ever heard in my life Keep On Keepin On God bless🙏🏾
MOST DEFINITELY! I would love to see you guys play together again. All those years ago as a kid barefoot in our trailer listening to the groove you guys were putting out and only having the album cover to help imagine watching you play live. Do You Love What You Feel is to this day in my top 3 Rufus songs (It's on my workout playlist}. There are some subtle but critical accents that the band played that I can just feel when I hear it and the double clap??? Brilliant. Something for you to consider. I know you're a bassist, but to hear you play guitar in Sweet Thing would be such a treat. Now that I know the part you played in composing it. Anyway, I'll stand by for dates.🕺
After we wrap up a little business, I am gonna work day & night on this project .. I love this music! Can't wait to see people moving in the audience ~
Hey Bobby, I just seeked out that 1972 High Voltage album you talked about and it's really great! It can be found here on RUclips (individual tracks), or the whole album can be found on Spotify. Enjoy y'all!! 🙂
Definitely get back together! Chaka was and is incomparable, and as musicians, you all were superb. The quality of your songs matched your talent. Saw you all at the DC Armory in 1975 and 2 years later at the Miami Jai Alai. Both were great shows!
I remember youguys gig, Bobby, Tony and Andre at Roppongi Valentine Club. That was just miracle groove never listened before like treasure on this planet. And when I heared CHAKA’s voice at Live under the sky Fes, I felt like this voice sounds like synthesizer! So my dream is seeing youguys reunion gig, that must be so special and super experience for young generations. This is what I feel. Thank you, Bobby san!
WOw, that was a good Gig for us to come and play and get Funky with that band, I remember it well ... I fell in Love with Japan right then Hank !! I want to come now too . Lol
Hey Watson, this is your friend from a decade ago, just left vm message on Mae's line. Please get in contact with one of your singers from "The Cookies"... (You know I submit and am a contributor to Wikipedia).. well, I just got a notification that Wikipedia is going to delete Maxayan's page if things are not verified/ "certified" on the page... File:Maxayn with lead singer Maxayn Lewis Circa early 1970's.jpg She's got until July 28th to do/provide this info. (Perhaps their bot is cleaning up articles from the 70's, especially for folks who aren't in the public eye that the younger kids could care less about, or maybe the algorithms are "saying" no one has looked at for 40 plus years...you know making room on the main servers because lots of artist/ articles are no longer relevant. GUESS it's part of the cancel culture 😅 Anyway if you can connect & she still cares, please contact her, I haven't spoken with her since 2014 & don't wish to call her number, because we only spoke business back then. Peace Mr. Watson, hope you're well... Re your talk on video...Jack-in -the Box...back then, didn't you eat their tacos in-between one of their hamburgers 😂
YES!! I would go. I really hope Chaka would be down. Its 50 yrs in the business for her this year so thats the same for Rufus I would imagine. This could be an iconic reunion. Tony cant play anymore, but maybe he can come and make an appearance and sing Stop on By, Do you love what you feel Once you get started with Chaka. He could participate too. If not, the rest of you can do it. It would be a welcome and exciting reunion. 70 is not old and there are many playing well beyond that age Bobby. I'm with you, you guys could make some good money and make a LOT of people happy and excited for the memories. Who knows, maybe even some new material. :)
You put it all in one statement ,,, Since I am active w Swimming, Shooting Hoops, Hiking, etc ,, I feel like 70 is not too old as well ,,, Tony added to the band (Singing only) would be a bonus ...
that guitar lick on you got the love! we had a band back at that time ,and i thought that was so awesome...years later i find out that's actually ray parker on the record...and once i found that out that lick made since. yes do a reunion tour...... i saw here on you tube a interview Chaka did and she said just what you said..getting back with Rufus ain't happening.. Chaka is a feisty you know what! LOL! it's clear she never got over her husband ass whooping! LOL! enjoyed the short talk.one more thing! it hit me when you talked about the original all white members of Rufus were let go or quit , i did see where 3 dog night ended up with them. 3 dog was the shit !! that band was tight!! great music and songs...thanks to drug use they faded away..dam shame ,,DRUGS AND ALWAY ONE GROUP MEMBERS GIRLFRIEND RUIN IT FOR EVERY BODY LOL!
Bobby I enjoy your Rufus history, Rufus was the One back in the day¡!! And yes we Rufus lovers would Love coming to see a Reunion 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Grab up Chaka also😅
hell yeah bruh, you should definitely tour at 70. the rolling stones are 170 and they're still out there 😂. it would be a treasure for me because unfortunately i've never seen rufus live. i remember as a teen being intimidated by music from artist like rufus, ewf, stevie wonder and marvin gaye because all those acts had that funk/soul/jazz sound.
Another Rufus and Chaka Reunion would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥As much as I love Chaka, I enjoyed her more with with Rufus. Throw the idea out to her and let's see if she's interested. 🙏🙏Keep the stories coming Mr. Watson.
Keep the videos coming, Mr. Watson!! A Rufus reunion with Chaka would be EPIC 🔥 But I know she doesn't want the input & confirming it takes to successfully be in a band
We will see what happens. CK always felt the most comfortable with us, we did all the arranging and all she had to do was show up and sing and look cute .. I'm betting nothing has changed !!
YES! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO ASK? If The Rolling Stones can trot out their Antiques Roadshows every so often, a band like RUFUS can hit the road, and make some dough!
No need to ask if I’d be interested in a Rufus reunion tour lol. The Jacksons are touring. I commented under a video that I’d love a Rufus reunion/Jacksons tour. I miss when Rufus, EWF, Parliament, Isley Brothers, George Duke, Roy Ayers and Patrice Rushen could be heard on the radio in heavy rotation. I was thinking, you played with Tony Maiden, Ray Parker jr and Al Mckay. How would you compare their styles? I think they’re all great (I might give Al Mckay a slight edge lol). Hoping you and your family are well.
Hey Bobby great video as always! At 34 years old one of the first bass lines I truly fell in love with was Rock With You and it got me into wanting to play bass. Apologies if you said this in previous videos but what ever happened to the original Precision Bass?
Silly me, When I moved to Japan, some music store guy offered me a ton of money for that 64' P Bass and I decided to sell it to him because I had so many companies giving me free basses (endorsements) !! Big mistake
I think not only 70, but they should bring their kids & grands sir...and what about using the young lady on the last vid...that was going to work with MJ before he passed? She's got a great voice...weird what I mentioned in previous text...I turned up volume & went back to listen to what you said...and when you mentioned Mavericks & Jack in the Box... I almost cracked up laughing! I can understand when an artist misses the music & not only that, the camaraderia most of all... which still holds many groups together, that still draw crowds, going on 5 decades now...I think its when EGO's get in the way that the destruction of even a novel thing is almost eminent...not forgetting how managers & record companies use to divide the "loyalties" of even families...like the Jacksons...sad very sad. We can say yeah...do it...the show...but youre creative, you all get your butts in gear & put something together... Give everyone a "taste" (preview here) & let it fly... sorta like the line in the Costner movie "If you build it, they will come"😮😊😊😊
Hi Bobby! Was there any early musical experience in your younger days as a school child? Did you maybe play an instrument as a kid in an orchestra, sing in church? Was there a musical impulse you felt early in life that followed you throughout your career? What is more important for an outstanding musician, playing from the heart or playing from the mind or maybe a combination of the two? I wish you many more years of great playing bass. Rufus...., that was you :)
This was incredible backstory. You guys have no idea what your music meant aesthetically. For me, a person who discovered your sound as a kid from "Maybe Your Baby" in Brooklyn all the way to the Bay area of Berkeley California ("Hollywood"), it just fit so well in my memory for each demographic. Question: From my understanding, I thought "Stompin At The Savoy," was supposed to a live video or film. What happened with that?
Awww, Cornelius man, I am so glad to see your comment, I too, am wondering why the label did not edit and release the Video (Movie) of the Savoy show (2 nights) ,, it was a blast doing that Gig ?? They probably have lost those tapes by now !! I got to meet Phoebe Snow and Carly Simon backstage !!
Hi Bobby, love your stories. Would love to hear how you and Tony got the gig with Billy Preston. Did you ever play live with him on tour? Also, how did you hook up with Renee and Angela and what it was like producing them?
Of course ,love to see you all ,still have my Rufus featuring Chaka Khan albums ,but you better reach out to the Queen of funk soul, Still looking and sounding so fine,If the Stones can make a new album and still tour , I know y'all can
Just heard "Aint Nobody" in the Prime "Air" movie about Michael Jordan signing to Nike. Do you guys get a cut every time that song is played? How does that work Mr Watson? Wasn't that the last Rufus featuring Chaka Khan single in 1983?
Bro Bobby Watson my grandma maiden name was Watson if we are related maaaan I would like to chop it up and meet you brother and play some bass with you👍😎
Had another question for you: I’ve assumed for years that the vocalist on “Street Player” was Tony Maiden, HOWEVER, the more I listen to it, the more I’m not so sure. There are times when-for lack of a better term-it sounds like a white guy singing. I know Hawk Wolinkski wrote it, and I know he and Moon Calhoun had good vocal chops, but can you clarify who actually sung the song? Thanks!
Tony was there. She did give Rufus props and brought Tony out. Personally, a little more credit to you guys giving her a shot would have been a little more sincere. You dues were appreciated sir.
Hey Mr. Watson, my brother in laws brother is a member of the ild group Confunkshun and they do shows all year everywhere. Im going to send him this RUclips channel and hopefully with their understanding of the process of these kinds of shows, everybody can win as you just described.
Bobby.
We love Rufus.
What a show it will be!
Wow, Scott thats my baby sister ,,, Love her like family
There was nothing like being at a Rufus and Chaka concert!!!
Your bass lines on "Rock with you" are stunning!
WOW, thank you so much ,,,,,

Wow. thats great, I am going to see her in July and ask what the deal is ...
Awwwww man, thank you so much , I appreciate you !
Thanks for sharing this Historic Moment with us… You are a Bad Man on Bass…
Thank you Mr. Burton, I appreciate you !!!
Great origin story! Thanks so much for sharing. Love Rufus and Chaka. Keep playing Bobby Watson!
this was such a great story of and how you and my very favorite band got together from the start and of course hearing about my most favorite vocalist on the planet Chaka.
and yes please continue to play
until y’all can’t play no mo!!
there is no sound like the sounds you all created together before or since. very unique vibe.
the world still needs to hear real musicians who have paved the way! thanks for sharing your version of “once you got started!! 😅. 🎼🥰👄😘❤
Yes Yes Yes
Bobby.... You inspired me to play those Bass grooves on "Street player" !💯👑🎸
Please Bobby, Tony, CK, Hawk -Rufus - come back. Soul not age that matters. - Luv-ya guys!
Would love to see reunion!! Got my vote! Thank you for all the history!!
Hello Bobby, I'm 66 going on 67, August 16th 2023.
Yeah as you can tell, I was around during those days.
It was a very enlightening video.
Alright Mr. Jammy, we might be coming soon ~ fingers crossed - and I heard Scotland might be one of the gigs to be booked (also San Francisco) !!
Thanks, keep talking, we fans love you guys.
Hey, Bobby. I’m 70 and I’d love to hear Rufus live here in London, England!
Well, thank you young man, haha ~ I'd Love for us to come and play over there sometime, is Ronnie Scott's still open ?
@@myvidworld1 yes, it’s still going. They have some great music. Rufus should play there, or perhaps the Jazz Cafe, which has more soul, funk and R&B acts.
I’ll be there to see anything you put together,… big fan … ❤
Alright Oly Nero ,, I see you bro ~ Appreciate you man
Hey Bobby, Nothing would be better that a night at the Hollywood Bowl listing to Rufus. I'm in! My cousins and I got into the Whisky to see you guys in one of the early shows (maybe '74?) - Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen! One of the cousins I was with married Andre .Small world...
WOW, thats crazy Gary, I loved the whiskey gig ! Also Andre had 5 wives ?? trying to figure out which one ?
Peace.
🙏👍The Original ''Double Thumb Bassist," Mr. Bobby Watson👍🙏
@@myvidworld1Hey…and I’d love to know who did all that great percussion work. “Better Days” from ASK RUFUS is one of my favorite examples!
I would love it. Bobby you have been a favorite bass player of mine for a long, long time. It's hard to say which is my very favorite, but "Once You Get Started" is hard to beat. Keep it up!
Thanks Don ~
LovePeace&Light,
Mykaèl.
Yes Bobby ,make it happen Bruh. takes us back to high school and the early club days.
Wow, I missed it, She always was happy being around us, especially Tony who made her job easier on the live shows
That would be phenomenal to regroup Rufus band was legendary
I would definitely buy a ticket to a Rufus show in Chicago, and I'm not alone.
Love these stories and would love to Rufus play!!❤
Thats right If Tony Bennett can do it, so can Rufus & Chaka !!
You should get Ray Parker on guitar! I’d love to see you guys!
Man I'm sitting here watching your video and I believe that you should play your base as long as you possibly can,
Rufus was one of the best bands I ever heard in my life Keep On Keepin On God bless🙏🏾
Gonna do it ,, thank you so much for this comment ~
Yes!
I would love to see you guys play the music of Rufus again. I’ve been following the band since the beginning, but please come to NY/NJ area 🙏🏽
After we wrap up a little business, I am gonna work day & night on this project .. I love this music! Can't wait to see people moving in the audience ~
That would be great if you get the band together to do some dates. Your music is still loved and played by many bands.
Yes Please I would love to see that PLEASE
Hey Bobby, I just seeked out that 1972 High Voltage album you talked about and it's really great! It can be found here on RUclips (individual tracks), or the whole album can be found on Spotify. Enjoy y'all!! 🙂
Definitely get back together! Chaka was and is incomparable, and as musicians, you all were superb. The quality of your songs matched your talent. Saw you all at the DC Armory in 1975 and 2 years later at the Miami Jai Alai. Both were great shows!
Awwww man, thank you so much for your comment, and looks like we are working on something for the end of this year, stay tuned !!
Just watch Chaka do an NPR tiny desk concert…. Would love to see the member of Rufus backing her again… thanks for sharing these videos🙏🏾
By all means, Bobby, please come to Detroit. You have still have big fans here we would love to see you play

File:Maxayn with lead singer Maxayn Lewis Circa early 1970's.jpg
She's got until July 28th to do/provide this info. GUESS it's part of the cancel culture 😅
Anyway if you can connect & she still cares, please contact her, I haven't spoken with her since 2014 & don't wish to call her number, because we only spoke business back then.
No thank you for the insight of the things that happened you are still rated one of my favorite Bass player once again thank you
Would love to hear you all get together and play live. Come out to the Seattle area!
I would love a reunion of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. Make that money.
So happy to see this comment, Baby need new shoes !!!!
GO ON TOUR or SOMETHING !!! If yall performing in the L.A. area Ill go !!! Thanks for these insightful videos.
Man I dived in head first on this because so many people would support the idea by coming with their dancing shoes to the gig when we play ,,,,
One more time!! One more time!! One tour to wrap it up!!
Man this is so awsome! Rufus 4Eva! 😎
I Love it ~
Bobby I enjoy your Rufus history, Rufus was the One back in the day¡!! And yes we Rufus lovers would Love coming to see a Reunion 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Grab up Chaka also😅
I know huh, before we all get too old ~ I'm working on something as we speak ~
hell yeah bruh, you should definitely tour at 70. the rolling stones are 170 and they're still out there 😂. it would be a treasure for me because unfortunately i've never seen rufus live. i remember as a teen being intimidated by music from artist like rufus, ewf, stevie wonder and marvin gaye because all those acts had that funk/soul/jazz sound.
The pic you You and Chaka is epic. Looks like you always had some silly times. 😂
😀😃😄 ~ we only got serious when it was time to count money !
@@myvidworld1 😂 Is it true that Natalie Cole sang background on "Please Pardon Me?"

I don't think she is but they could make a lot of money if they recorded again. Money talks 🤞😂.

We are all still here, You just may see us soon , fingers crossed
All 3 are rhythm kings ,, but Al McKay has the edge (groove master) I played in his EWF experience band and we had fun every night ~
@@myvidworld1 I did not know you played with them! Al’s band is tighter, and sounds closer to the original, than the current EWF lineup!😊
Aww this too cool!
Big mistake
Do It ! We have a great vocalist in UK who could carry this off.
Chaka just got inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is there any chance the band could reunite for the ceremony?
I'm hoping so, wouldn't that be nice !! meeting up for a very special event and having a get together of all the Original members !! whooooweee
Absolutely!
Absolutely
I would be willing to check you all out.
Oh yes I have not seen the movie yet, but we all do share the royalties when our songs are used in films
Bro Bobby Watson my grandma maiden name was Watson if we are related maaaan I would like to chop it up and meet you brother and play some bass with you👍😎
By the way the last few minutes of that song Stay you ripped it on that fret board you went into another space 👍😎
I appreciate you Mr. Telley, We could be related man ,, ??
@@telleyvestal3351 yes, I love that ending, I say to myself that "young" Bobby Watson was jamming on da Bass !!
Thanks!
Definitely Tony Maiden Odawg , he must have done 200 takes, but thats him ...
@@myvidworld1 Thanks for clarifying. Well, that’s one “mystery” solved. 😀
Yes I'll be there im 63 I'll carry the bags haha if you need a drummer percussionist vocal background etc I'll do that too lol
Did you ever get carpal tunnel?
No I did not , but I do have a little Arthritis ,, The pool helps (3/4 days a week)
Where do you rate Michael Henderson?
from another planet ,, He played with Miles Davis,,, Bad boy !
Please get the band back together!
Did you see or were at the Chaka' s HOF induction 11/3/2023.
heard about it, I am so glad for her ,, she deserves all of that ~
Tony was there. She did give Rufus props and brought Tony out. Personally, a little more credit to you guys giving her a shot would have been a little more sincere. You dues were appreciated sir.
Yea put the band back together!!
Hey Mr. Watson, my brother in laws brother is a member of the ild group Confunkshun and they do shows all year everywhere. Im going to send him this RUclips channel and hopefully with their understanding of the process of these kinds of shows, everybody can win as you just described.
Confunkshun !! one of my favorite bands from the 70's era ! I want his autograph !!
You all should definantly keep playing! That's what all the other old groups are doing. Chic, EWF, ect.....
