    Genius design on the bracket to capture that handle. Also, I appreciate the attention to safety. It only takes a second for something to happen that can be life altering. One of my giant concerns around my farm is kids being somewhere I'm not expecting them. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten out and checked or stopped and asked another adult if they have eyes on my kiddo and her friends.

    I have been looking at similar trailers. They Have high speed hubs on the wheels so you could mount trailers tires and pull it behind your vehicle. Lights could be installed on the sides of the trailer body and if you keep the weight under 3000 lbs it would be road legal to use around town no brakes needed. Just a thought.

    I just knew you'd improve this trailer. Very nice safety latch. The company would be crazy not to incorporate this feature into their trailer build. One observation, if you removed the front gate on the tractor and put a long log in, it looks like you'd hit the release mechanism. You might consider shortening the release mechanism's handle so that it lays below the bed of the trailer and anything you put in it, logs or lumber etc. can't accidently release the hitch (your safety device will prevent this), or bend the lever (if it was shorter it would be under the load, and difficult to operate). It appears you were able to dump your logs and they didn't interfere with the lever so the lever may be low enough and not an issue.

    • @OneEyeCustoms
      @OneEyeCustoms  Год назад +2

      The lever is just below the load deck, but I did shorten it a bit more to keep it from getting bumped or bent.

    Jack/kickstand would be more useful if you could crank it up like an RV. With a load in the trailer, it might be impossible to lift the hitch off the ball, but with a crank stand, you could raise the hitch off the ball.

  • @JeffGeorgalas
    @JeffGeorgalas Год назад +1

    Hey Doug. Good idea on the safety mechanism. However, it seems to me like that could rotate forward towards the tow vehicle when bumping around in the woods, or on uneven ground etc. I think I would put that bracket in the closed position, and then drill another hole through the mechanism that you've built, and drill it all the way through the tongue of the trailer, then slide a pin through both the tongue, and your mechanism, with a keeper or cotter pin on it. Just like the one that the jackstand on the trailer has. Then it CAN'T move anywhere until you want it to.

  • @buildlife

    You should put on a winche to raise and lover the bed on the trailer. That would be much more secure. Yes it takes a bit longer time to open and close it. But you can also use it to haul the logs on to the trailer with.

    Doug, nice simple safety solution. Would it be possible to make the safety longer so it acts as a debris cover and safety latch. As dirt and materials land on the greasier sections, the debris cover would assist in deflecting it away from the latch mechanism where the grease attracts the dirt. Just a thought.

    As usual, you’ve managed to make a good thing better. Honestly, I think the company has little choice now other than to develop their own safety latch as it is clearly an unsafe condition. Should someone now get injured sans such a safety latch, they would probably have some good grounds for a negligence lawsuit. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a litigious kind of guy but it’s clearly an unsafe design without a safety pin, latch or device. I think the company should also affix a warning label at the lever. Other than that, it seems like an awesome cart.

    I wonder if you could replace the 6 bolts that hold the rear gate and gas strut brackets with a quick release type bolt, or maybe a clevis pin. I'd want something that's fairly flush on both sides. If you can find a clevis pin the right length (or make one), it might not protrude any further than the nut on the existing bolt does. When the gate is up the gas shock should be fully extended (or nearly so), which would make it easy to get on and off.
