I came as an immigrant kid to USA, we did not have ability to buy a bike in old country. My dad got me one similar to this one also in Goodwill. I loved it! 🥲
Very lucky bike! With a bit of attention and love, this baby comes back to be part of the life of a person. 80's were plenty of BMX everywere, and of course bring me back some lovely memories. As always, nive job! Big hug!
I know I can’t be the only one here that recalls the freedom and excitement of riding BMX as a kid. I had GTs, Haros and Mongooses (Mongeese? Haha). They’d all probably be worth some nice money nowadays. Thanks for the video, your restorations are always fun to watch.
Missed you talking and the peaceful music. Great build by the way. As soon as you put the pads on i was back in the 80s awesome. Big love from the UK 🇬🇧
My first REAL Bmx back in 1986 was a Chrome GT, can't remember the model, but I do remember that it was featured in a BMX mag that year and told my dad how much I wanted, he got it for me on Christmas, it had plastic 3 blade GT rims! Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Great to see you tackle a BMX build. I've found the WD-40 & very fine steel wool works great on removing rust from chrome too, just finished up restoring an '88 GT Performer for a high school friend that he can now ride again with his son. Lots of us out there restoring BMX along with mtn and road bikes, great to see this. Keep up the great work!
I've just had a barn find. Gt dyno and a 1978 redline frame, bars and forks.. not sure if I should restore or sell to someone who can do a better job.. from what I can see though the redline frame is quite rare. Any thoughts?
@@simonabraham415 Bikes this old were treated like how any kid treats their toys. How many expensive baseball rookie cards were shredded in the spokes of my bike when I was a kid? Personally, if you have the interest in restoring it yourself there is a plethora of information on youtube you could access. Slow and steady. But, if it's just a financial thing then list it on eBay and someone world-wide who appreciates this frame will approach you.
Some restorations hit close to home. I still have my chromoly 1986 GT Mach One with upgraded Flight cranks (and Dyno number plate), so I enjoyed watching you return this 1989 to its roots. Nice work. My Mach One was raced pretty hard for four years and has been enjoying its well-earned retirement ever since.
I will like to think you made this video because of my sugestion,..I sat down, relaxed and enjoyed..!!! Of course, you wouldn't disapoint..thank you so much.
Yes!!! This is exactly what I’ve been hoping you’d do once! Would love to see you doing some more 80s old school BMXes! Love how the colorway turned out!
My late best friend used to have a GT Pro Performer back in the mid 1980's. I was a Redline fan myself starting with the PL-20 and then switching to the RL-20II.
Great resto as always. Would be nice if you did a video covering all the oils/lubricants you use for each application and why. There are so many different types of lithium, ptfe etc and knowing what you recommend is best for bearings chains and so on would be a interesting video…
God I love the look of 80's BMX bikes. One of my childhood friends, back in the early 90s, had this BMX with oval shaped tubing for the frame. I have no idea what it was to this day. It had no decals, and looked like it had been repainted, but it was a really nice looking bike. This video just kinda sparked that memory in my brain...
Ahh the memories, raced with my kids in the 90s. Our transportation was a Ford Festiva so three bikes ot break down and reassemble at every race. Good times.
I'm loving your videos. Just found you and I'm very excited. I found 2 old 90's style MTB (full suspension) sitting in the trash in my apartment complex. I picked them up and plan on rebuilding completely, and going to do a paint job too. A lot of firsts will be had on this project, but I'm hoping I've learned something from binging your vids. Keep up the awesome work, you are seriously impressive and love your video style.
I remember those pedals from the days - my shins still have the marks of 'em... You should source a pair of alloy GT- cages for this bike (DX- style), that would really make it the part... great build, lovely nostalgia!
8$ for a GT would never happen in Germany! always so jealous of you, You find such nice bikes for a real bargain at your thriftshop ^^ Such a nice GT :)
It amazes me how foil cleans chrome. Great job the blue tyres brings back memories of my raliegh mini burner that was all blue with those tyres. Awesome. Gotta get in gear and sort a gt performer 98 that I have to clean up like you I want to keep it's scars and make it ride well. The vintage cranks are big money.
Awesome restoration! For future reference, you can buff and wax the decals to get them all cleaned up and shiny again. Also, wet 1500 grit sandpaper instead of a file to clean up the nuts.
That was fun and and an education to watch. I did not miss the BMX era but man the adult riders today that were all in then have some mad bike skills ;) And I love GT’s embossed top tube. I just found a 2000 Saddle Back for $20, a bit rough, but mechanically solid. Replaced all the cables, packed the bearings, and swapped to more ergonomic bars, and it is my new favorite. I thought of your channel during the hours on the stand and the wash trays.
DiaCompe make repop MX-1000 and MX-890 brake calipers and DiaTech 3 and DiaTech 4 levers which aren't terribly hard to find. SE racing make some nice classic chain tensioners. They would look amazing on this bike.
I’m restoring an old department store bike but when I found it, it was only frame and fork and spray painted over 3 times. I can’t find another like it so I got it powder coated and put gt performer bars and gt mallet stem remake with grip and 22mm bottom bracket so I could put 3 piece cranks. Only thing I need now is some white mag wheels but not sure where to find any. Love the build man!
I was lucky enough to come across an 88 marin muirwood and an 89 kona lava dome recently, both in terrible shape. When I restore them to oem I'll be thinking of you and your awesome creativity.
Remembered here in Marseille/France years 1981,saw guys riding a Redline and a PK RIPPER,simply epic..next in 1985 friends have the legendary GT,Haro and Skyway ..other have Magnum too..
Lol you had me at 89 gt. Love your videos but this one hit right up my alley being an oldschool bmx guy. And my current ride being a old school mtn bike/cruiser turn bmx. Love this one
Love the bike pal I used to have a Peugeot tear drop frame chrome with black skyway tough 2 mags and power disk crank and Mx brakes I loved that bike on the track
very clever restoration. as a mobility impaired senior i challenge you to build a 16" 3 wheel rollator with fat tyres that are studded to negotiate bad sidewalks during winter and a frame that folds so one could board buses and trains . painted in camo od green matte finish and brakes and adjustible to fit all peoples.
Great job, sir! Looks just an 80s build, and well done on the new parts - pretty good match! Weird seeing an 80s frame with a threaded BB. I would have assumed it’d be a one-piece crank, but that black three-piece goes well.
Yeaah I remember my bmx bike its was a blue one, alphina deluxe. I was riding to school with my sony walkman on my belt playing duran duran.. these where the days when I was really happy..👍
I remember a GT BMX I bought at a car boot sale in UK, many years ago, it was in poorly maintained condition, the people I bought it from claimed it was used for racing.. The cranks were held on with pieces of metal in between the square taper and cranks and feel part as I was trying to ride home! I ended stripping it down and kept the frame for some years before selling it on eBay, regretted it soon after! I should have restored it when I had the money!
I still have my 1989 FreeAgent. I've ways kept it in rideable condition. It hangs on the wall in my shop now but with some air in the tires it's ready to ride. I still want to upgrade the cranks to a set of Redline Flights, I may do it one day.
AWESOME! All things taken into consideration, this is an excellent recovery of a BMX Bike Icon. Just one little thing... you could have stuck a Chromed backed GT head stock badge on it as the cherry on the cake. Your use of colour parts is brilliant... great job well done.
Oh! It reminds me the pending project I have restoring my brother’s BH California for his sister. It was impossible to remove the stem. And forget about to lub bearings… it was a pain in the ass to adjust the length chain… until I saw one of your videos… I love chrome frames. It would have been nice to see you removing all those scratches to learn.
Hey great video. My first bike was a GT mach one. Loved GT ever since. Looking at this build I realize I have a pair of old CQP cranks (the dogbone alloy ones) that would look great on there. If you're interested let me know. I've also been working on a GT karakoram MTB resto that I'm still in need of parts for. So might be able to work out a deal in trade. At any rate. Channel is awesome totally motivated me to get an old MTB and fix it up even though I grew up riding and still ride BMX.
Beautiful. My older brother’s old Raleigh Super Tough Burner got the seat post rusted in it and I snapped it trying to restore it as an inpatient teenager. Did mag wheels really true up in the freezer?
Love it...reminds me of my first "real" bike that taught me how to jump and bunny hop. I started MTB at around 12 yo and just kind of left BMX in the past, but I still appreciate them. I can't ride BMX anymore cause of an injury, unfortunately. I still MTB, just not the same as I used to...a lot more leisurely.
Very cool! I had a '96 GT interceptor as a kid. My first "real" bike that I paid for myself. I kinda hate myself for letting my mom sell it for $50. At least some kid got a fantastic deal.
Can never go wrong with an 80's BMX bike...they just don't make them like this anymore. Totally RAD 🔥🤙
@L P I Agree, almost all old school bikes after 87 were garbage. I have 12 bike...all pre 85!
My thrift stores NEVER have cool stuff like this!
I came as an immigrant kid to USA, we did not have ability to buy a bike in old country. My dad got me one similar to this one also in Goodwill. I loved it! 🥲
I don't even know what this bike is but this is surely one of your best videos. SO patient
Masterful job
Thanks my friend.

Awesome job! Thanks for given a 2nd life to that great gt!
Even the music fits, good touch.
Staffan Carlén. Always good to hear his stuff.
Thanks
This build made me unreasonably happy on the inside. Thank you
Awesome 🙌
Great restoration old shovel BMX bikes was awesome back in the day

Love old bmxs
As 80s old school BMXer love to see this one. You get me inspire to finally finish restoring my 1984 Mongoose II, that I rode back in the 80s.
Great to see you tackle a BMX build. I've found the WD-40 & very fine steel wool works great on removing rust from chrome too, just finished up restoring an '88 GT Performer for a high school friend that he can now ride again with his son. I like the wire wool soap pads.
They have to be quad 0 (0000) grade though.
I've used aluminum foil crunched into a ball. It's softer than chrome.
I've just had a barn find. Gt dyno and a 1978 redline frame, bars and forks.. not sure if I should restore or sell to someone who can do a better job.. from what I can see though the redline frame is quite rare. Any thoughts?

That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your story.
Love this BMX restoration! Earlier this year I found this channel when I was restoring a newer BMX I saved from someone's trash.
I had a 1989 GT Mach One, but i gotta say this one looks cooler..The blue and yellow make it look awesome AF!
As an old school myself-- I love the attention to detail and care you gave to this bike. Redline 600 cxl here- still love that bike and wish I had it.
This video just bring back every good moments I had with my bmx back in the 80’s. Thabks for that
Awesome
I will like to think you made this video because of my sugestion,..I sat down, relaxed and enjoyed..!!! Of course, you wouldn't disapoint..thank you so much.
My pleasure
$8.00 that's amazing!! I have the same bike love it!!
Yes!!! This is exactly what I’ve been hoping you’d do once! Would love to see you doing some more 80s old school BMXes! Love how the colorway turned out!
My first BMX bike...took me back. Thank you!
So rad. Give this man a full face helmet and color matching kit.
🙌
Love your videos I not long restrod a 1979 GMX-250 GIANT BMX I fell back in love working on bikes after started watching RUclips videos Cheers Will
When I was at school I had a gt fly bmx absolutely loved it. Don't make them like they used to.
Sweet! I’m working on restoring my 88 sterling fs-700 as we speak!
I love the ride vid at the end! Great music choice and cruising the suburbs!! Felt like an 90s film!! Like my childhood! So epic!!
My late best friend used to have a GT Pro Performer back in the mid 1980's. I was a Redline fan myself starting with the PL-20 and then switching to the RL-20II.
I currently have a 94 rl840fs and I love it
Dude. Radical bike. Love the color coordination with the decals.
Thanks
Awesome build! I love the simplicity of bmx bikes. And those upright bars suit my casual upright riding style these days.
nostalgia overload with bmxs. unlike mtbs, bmxs just hits way too deep 😁
Nice work on this GT

Awesome video another 80s classic BMX bike saved from impending doom! 😁👍
This bmx content from you that i waited so many month,...

Thanks my friend 🙌
Cool vintage find
Love the way the bike turned out.
Nice GT! Nice ride! Chao!
probably my favorite build so far👌🏼 loved the jump clip at the end too haha
This is so rad
I remember those pedals from the days - my shins still have the marks of 'em...
You should source a pair of alloy GT- cages for this bike (DX- style), that would really make it the part... great build, lovely nostalgia!
when he got to the pedals i got a shiver and said "o god, bear traps" later on in life we got smart and used lizard skin shin guards.
Very cool! My first real bicycle was a GT performer in the 1980s and it was yellow with blue accents. I love those old GT bicycles!
Awesome
8$ for a GT would never happen in Germany! always so jealous of you, You find such nice bikes for a real bargain at your thriftshop ^^ Such a nice GT :)

Yet another awesome build could watch all day 👌🏼
Awesome find, wish the thrift stores near me would have bikes like that at all, let alone for $8. Great job bringing it back
DiaCompe make repop MX-1000 and MX-890 brake calipers and DiaTech 3 and DiaTech 4 levers which aren't terribly hard to find.
SE racing make some nice classic chain tensioners.
They would look amazing on this bike.
11:20 - Oh! The blue tires! So needed after I saw. ****ing best blue possible!
Yes! Changing it up a bit! I cant wait for the next retro kona build… could you possibly do a fix up spending no money on parts at all?
I’m restoring an old department store bike but when I found it, it was only frame and fork and spray painted over 3 times. Nice build Cru! I’ve been wondering where you have been! Please thank Rob for letting you sub in.

Awesome
Great restoration build! I had one of these as kid road it till it fell apart and rusted out.
Looks great! Love your content. The outro music was very 80s BMX-ish appropriate!
Great vidéo. 👍
Time to rebuild my old Raleigh Burner. 😁
🙌
Why do you pop a 10p piece -UK equivalent! Inside each grip?
Keeps bar ends from cutting through the ends of the grip
@@justin4n6 Thanks thought it must be something like that but never come across it before
I Owen a 1983 mongoose supergoose chome and red,is like a jewelry to me,I'm going to keep it for life..!
Silver, yellow, blue = GT. Nice restored and ciao😉👍
Lol you had me at 89 gt. Love your videos but this one hit right up my alley being an oldschool bmx guy. And my current ride being a old school mtn bike/cruiser turn bmx. Love this one
Awesome thanks
Love the blue tires!
Nice resto, would love to the power series cranks on it.
Totally. They are $$$
Awesome build gotta love retro 👍🏼yellow or silver pedal be great
Love the bike pal I used to have a Peugeot tear drop frame chrome with black skyway tough 2 mags and power disk crank and Mx brakes I loved that bike on the track
When faced with trying to retain a crank arm from turning I use a U Lock. You find that good position and it holds really well. No stretch.,
very clever restoration. as a mobility impaired senior i challenge you to build a 16" 3 wheel rollator with fat tyres that are studded to negotiate bad sidewalks during winter and a frame that folds so one could board buses and trains . painted in camo od green matte finish and brakes and adjustible to fit all peoples.
Love your restore videos. Have to ask on the nickel in the grip. To keep from punching through the end of the grip?
Yep and through other soft things. I don’t like getting corked.
Great job, sir! Looks just an 80s build, and well done on the new parts - pretty good match! Weird seeing an 80s frame with a threaded BB. I would have assumed it’d be a one-piece crank, but that black three-piece goes well.

Used to have one of these along with a Pro Series. Miss them both.
Glad i turned my computer on, Thumps up
Yeaah I remember my bmx bike its was a blue one, alphina deluxe. I was riding to school with my sony walkman on my belt playing duran duran.. these where the days when I was really happy..👍
Awesome
Have a 1980 era gt Mach one ride it every time I get a chance love that bike
I remember a GT BMX I bought at a car boot sale in UK, many years ago, it was in poorly maintained condition, the people I bought it from claimed it was used for racing..
The cranks were held on with pieces of metal in between the square taper and cranks and feel part as I was trying to ride home! I ended stripping it down and kept the frame for some years before selling it on eBay, regretted it soon after! I should have restored it when I had the money!
Take that straight to the pump track!
I still have my 1989 FreeAgent. I've ways kept it in rideable condition. It hangs on the wall in my shop now but with some air in the tires it's ready to ride. I still want to upgrade the cranks to a set of Redline Flights, I may do it one day.

Sweet jumps
I have the nos cranks chain ring and paddle set as well as seat and tyres some day hope to find a bike nice enough them to go on
Cru Jones would be proud!
In the next video will you track down whoever put the triple chain ring on it? They need to be stopped! Great job as ever.
Lol
are the coins in the grips to avoid core sampling yourself?
Totally
This one deserved a little bit more. Hopefully it finds a good home and gets the full treatment.
Oh! It reminds me the pending project I have restoring my brother’s BH California for his sister. It was impossible to remove the stem. And forget about to lub bearings… it was a pain in the ass to adjust the length chain… until I saw one of your videos… I love chrome frames. Forgot the Walkman… 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What the?! I recognize Mueller Park when I see it. Awesome you live in B-town too. Loved the restoration!

Very good djob, return 70" 😉👍👌
Beautiful. My older brother’s old Raleigh Super Tough Burner got the seat post rusted in it and I snapped it trying to restore it as an inpatient teenager. Did mag wheels really true up in the freezer?
Lol on the freeze for mag wheels. I totally remember hearing that as a kid. I’ve never verified that myself though. Awesome 🙌
No that was pre internet BS lol. Plastic has a memory, and it takes heat to achieve it, not cold.
Love it...reminds me of my first "real" bike that taught me how to jump and bunny hop. I started MTB at around 12 yo and just kind of left BMX in the past, but I still appreciate them. Ooof, blue tires. Know they were the thing back in the day, and they go perfect with the bike… but man, they hurt these old eyes, ha! Great build!
I’d love to find a Redline 500a for the same price. Was my dream bike in the early 80s
