PlayStation Classic Current Limiter Removal Mod

- The two front ports on the PlayStation Classic are limited to a max output of 5v @ 100mA. This causes issues for modding as most USB storage devices are built to use at least 500-800mA. This mod removes the 100mA limit.
There are two methods shown. The first being soldering two resistors together to create a short. The second method uses a conductive ink pen which is a bit easier and less permanent.

I used some soldering tin with flux and it worked! It's worth mentioning that I have never soldered in my life before, but practised a bit with the iron before going for it. I'm impressed.
Thank you for the tutorial video. I soldered the 2nd USB ports limiter and now all my jump drives work with the PSC.
Just got done completing this. Went the solder method even though I'm on the older side and my hands shake a bit with tiny solder jobs like this, but all good, thanks for the video!
Sounds good but maybe a lower value resistor would be a better option. They engineered the current limiter for a reason. I would definitely include a disclaimer on the mod vid.
Thank you for taking the time to put this video together. I bought the conductive ink pen today. Fingers crossed I can get the power mod to work successfully :)
It worked like a charm!! Thanks again!!
Thx for the tutorial video. I soldered the 2nd USB ports limiter only with a dap of solder and it worked. Now my USB 3.0 jump drives work without problems with the PSC.
Thanks for the post, I was wondering if that would work. Going to try it!
@@SirCorn did it work ?
@@legin3753 it worked in the sense that I can get proper power but don't have a compatible drive or am doing something wrong with formatting. The power distribution does work as demonstrated as I could power drives that would not previously turn on
Is the limiter to prevent USB hacks ?
Came here to say I did the #2 pencil method and it worked! I have tried several drives non powered and they work. New life brought to my Classic
Are you same dude that develop the ps classic hack? If so Thank you 🙏
@@DoctorDalek god among men :)
Yep! He is such an awesome human
Finally spent the 5 minutes to do this mod and works great after my little test! Thanks for the shorting references! Recommend doing this only if you have a good soldering iron and prior skill - these resistors are very small.
I just did this mod today soldering the resistors together and now I have my Playstation Classic reading my SanDisk USB 3.0 128gig cruiser and now running Eris with no problem. Thanks for this video guide!
Thank you! This worked great and now I have too many thumb drives as I went through 3 before I got one that worked. At least now I can put all of my games in one place. Thanks again!
by the ink method being less "permanent" do you mean it will stay unless you wipe it off with the alcohol or will i have to reapply after a month or so?
As someone who has no interest in modding their PS classic hardware i found this really interesting to watch.
You are not allowed to watch videos that you have no interest in.
only reason i got 1 was to mod it lol
Ive been thinking of doing this, glad to hear you've been running it of a month. It's a much neater solution than a powered USB hub and even OTG, less wires under my TV the better.
Yea I'm doing the dongle powered usb myself. Did you do this mod? And did it help? Thanks.
Is your console still alive?
@ I did the mod, yes my console still works
Thank you that's really helpful there's no way a normal person would know that I wish I knew how to solder great video
@@DoctorDalek ooo
thanks for this video! I do have two questions however.
Any long term issues from doing this?
Is it healthy to just mod one of the ports?
FYI, even though this mod is completely safe. If you use this mod I wouldn't push any more than 2.5amps into the PSC and don't do anything stupid by overloading your front usb ports by trying to power 5 sata HDDs on it.
Also...
Staple and kapton tape. I tried this just out of curiosity and worked fine. (I wouldn't recommend it though over the pen)
Why wouldn't you give it more than that ? Frying the resistors ?
When you took the qtip to the carbon ink, and started rubbing it everywhere lmfao I was panicking
LOL he probably was too he was just trying to play it cool
Hi, first of all many thanks for this great video! But I messed it up because of my poor soldering. Both of the two resistors on port two are gone and unfortunaltely for me it looks like that the contactors on the board are detached as well. So I guees there is no chance anymore for your current limiter mod, right? Luckily my PS classic is still working. Which I do not understand actually. Becuase imho the removal of the resistors mean that the resistance value is now 'quite high', isn't it`?
I made this mod today, but I only got 190mA no matter what. My power adapter pushes 1.3A, is that too low?
It turns out if you give a resistance of zero, or directly short this pin to ground, you can effectively disable any current limiting for the port with a maximum of 1.5A allowed. The easiest way to do this is to short one side of the two resistors.👍
Will this enable me to use the second usb port for a second player? Right now im using an OTG adapter with my usb plugged into that leaving the two ports in the front open. As of right now the second usb port does nothing when a second controller is plugged into it.
Thanks man. So greatful for all you do!!
@@DoctorDalek Hmm, I know the port works. I had the USB stick plugged in there before I switched to the OTG adapter. Any idea what could be wrong?
Question. If you can glob the ink over all 4 points can you do the same with the soldering? I agree in principal if you're shorting them out it really doesn't matter if they're all connected but you only said that about the ink and not about the solder. Would it cause any problems you can think of? I'm not terrible at soldering but if I could just hit all 4 it would save a lot of stress on my nerves haha.
Thanks, this helped! I've been trying different USB-drives, OTG and powered USB-hubs "forever". This worked on all my USB-drives.
Thank you so much! I was going to use a thin wire to bridge the resistors but my soldering iron tip is so big it just dropped a glob of solder on both. Tested it with a 128GB USB that previously required a powered USB hub and now it works without! Appreciate the video and tips!
Thank you. I just recently purchased a ps classic for cheap yesterday. I was looking all over for that tutorial and I’m glad I’ve finally found it. Will be performing this mod soon.
Lol, I actualy did the third alternative. Piece of small aliuminum foil with a tiny piece of ductape over it.. and it actualy worked! Do you think I might break something over time or do you think this solution will keep working ??
You could use a 10amp power supply the device will only pull the current it requires, but a lot of USB 2 sticks also don't work and the ones I've tested pull no more than 30ma nowhere near the 100ma power limiter, so the device compatibility is really hit and miss.
Hi is there a way of increasing the power through the hdmi? I have a external hdmi scanline generator but the signal through the hdmi is too weak for the tv to pick up. I have tried using 25cm hdmi cables, ps1 to SG to TV but no success.
Thank you very much for the info. Do you think there will be a time when a USB3 can be used from the rear (in conjunksion with the power lead) or will this also require a hardware mod ? ps/ sound was very much better in this video (sound so low on other videos made them unwatchable)
holy crap. i couldnt get mine to ever read the flash drive. did the conductive ink and 5 min later and im in! thanks!
Thank you very much. This solved my issue with my USB 3.0. Works great.
Thanks, im gonna try, btw I wanna ask if theres some way to play this whit an hdmi to vga adapter, I wanna play on a CRT monitor, or just play on a monitor that doesnt have speakers built in, cheers
The Tendak Hdmi to Vga is a $15 dollar adapter on amazon that is widely used with almost no lag for exactly situations like yours. I use mine for the ps one classic to crt monitors all the time!
Just completed this mod with graphite pencil shavings mixed with acrylic paint 1:1 ratio. Simply mixed the paint and graphite then carefully dabbed it on with a toothpick. Worked perfectly and didn't even have to buy the pen or solder
Does that work well as a permanent solution?
Thinking of trying this on my classic, to try using 2 8bitdo adapters (for ds3) and a USB drive. Currently have a powered hub and can get all three to work temporarily, then the classic powers off. Not too confident in my soldering skills so I'm gonna go with the pen method, but I'm curious, you have the carbon pen linked but would the silver/nickel pens be better or worse for this use? Thanks!
Same here! I tried with 2 8bitdo (ds4 and snes n30 controllers). My hub looks good with one and usb, but crush when I connect the second 8bitdo adapter. Did you find any solution?
I looked up the data sheet on that chip and recommends a minimum of 15k ohms at that point, not a dead short. Looks like you need about 50k ohms to achieve 500mA.
is there any harm in this since more voltage is going through board? Also ive never soldered before ever so what kinda wire was that he used and where do u buy it by chance as idk what its offically called
Hello! Thanks for the Video! I wanna do the Stealth SD Mod on my PS Classic and that limiter removal is needed that it works. Im worried that i dont understand this right.. :D (my english isnt that good and i'm not that good at electronic stuff haha) is it useful to do this on both ports or is i fine to make it just on port 2? i'm also not sure what happened here? So you took solder sort and connected this two little resistors on just one side(am i right?) then you put conductive ink just other the two resistors from port 1 or? are this just two different methods or can i use solder sort on both ports?
thanks for your answer!
I bridged my with just solder. works perfectly fine.
I was just about ask if I could just bridge it with solder. Thanks for this taking the time to make comment.
Did this method and has not worked. My ps classic still isn't picking up the usb drives.
Did u sort this as got a 3.0 myself waiting on the conductive pen to arrive
Did you figure it out ?. I can't mod my mates ps
Another thing that works for bridging those points and I swear I am not lying is a nice sharp number 2 pencil just go back and forth back and forth laying a good heavy graph line and it will work I shit you not and the best part is it's completely reversible but it will stay on there for as long as you want it to ..... I first started actually using this style of method with a graphite pencil doing Pandora batteries for the PSP it required you to cut a trace on a regular PSP battery to turn it into a Pandora battery so you could install custom firmware on your PSP the only problem was is now you've cut your trace and you have to fix it so you can use your PSP after installing custom firmware so I found a pencil worked great I learned it from another person online I didn't think it would work either but it did
Hey this worked lol my phone is charging port 2
Ended up taking off both resistors on port 1 then put a glob of solder over all 4 pads. Seemed to work great
Hi Pat, my both USB ports doesn't work. Dont recognize original gamepads, and pendrives. There's no power. Did you think if i do this, they will work again?
Pretty cool man, keep up the good work!
So does this also disable the reverse current protection? Or is it just removing the current limitation?
Also is it possible this mod will allow for more controllers to work? Don't know if I really need to do port 1 too, cuz I'll never use a drive there, and one less spot to screw things up lol.
I've had trouble with all of my 3.0 flash drives so far (32gb Kingston DT100 G3, 64gb PNY Turbo Attaché 3, 64gb PNY Elite-X Fit), so I'm gonna try this mod now.
If you use a USB hub with this mod, yes you can use controllers.
Thanks! it works perfectly
Do you have to bridge all 4 points or just 2?
So I have Bleemsync 1.1 installed on my PSC and have been trying to use an official PS3 dualshock 3 controller. The controller seems to work fine in retroarch, however if I turn rumble/vibrate on in the settings and then get to a point in a game that uses rumble my controller will vibrate briefly and the PSC will crash and turn itself off. Is this due to the controller trying to draw too much power when vibrating? Will this power limit removal mod fix this issue I'm having?
I had the same problem, did the permanent cxurrent limmiter mod and it killed my console.
i have .032 60/40 rosin core solder, would that work for this? if not, what wire do i get specifically? wire wrapping wire 30 gauge?
Thanks for the info, just bough the Mg Chemicals Carbon Conductive Pen @ eBay for $6.36 AC with no tax and free shipping (New)
Now I can mod my PSX classic and others from friends and family
How you learn all this, genius 👍 you should have more subs bro!
9ml tube of Conductive wire Glue/Paint from Amazon will do the trick and it dry's harder then the ink :)
Nice work. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome work, I bought the same pen on Amazon and just completed the conductive ink method last night. I put the PSC back together and put my iPhone charger in port 1, it charged for a couple seconds, stopped and then said device not supported on the iPhone. Plugged in port 2 and charged with no error message on the phone. Do you know if this is normal for Port 1 to do that with this kind of phone? Also able to use my Sandisk ultra fit 3.1 128GB in port 2 with no powered hub anymore :)
Normal for port 1 ;)
Can i just do Port 2 since that is the only port we really use for USB Flash Drives....
Tried using aluminum foil to cover it but couldn't get it to work
I have a psc but the usb ports don’t work, will this solve it or should swap the controller chip. Thanks
So that’s the reason some Playstation Classic consoles are just dying?
I'll bet one hand it is.
So I have two questions about this. 1. Does sending more power to the USB port take power away from the performance of the classic ? And 2. Could I use a portable USB hdd in port two now ?
if i, in the process of trying the mod, do too much heat and rip off / Fry / FUBAR one of the resistors, will it also work?
I was having lots of difficulty doing the bridge. and after fiddling a bit on port 1, the farthest (from the port) resistor came stuck to the solder iron. i then (after shitting my pants ) managed to more or less put it in the same place, and the two resistors actually bridged together as supposed. although i highly doubt the resistor i put back on was put correctly with both pads connecting, or is even in working condition any more.
I then reassembled my now presumably dead Playstation Classic and it powered on.
First try, Project eris flash drive refuses to boot connected by the backside OTG cable. Not sure if this was due to me not pluging things in the correct order or heat damage / short circuits, but after some minutes and reconnecting everything again, it actually booted normally and my Wired 360 controller which didn't fully work on Port 1, now works perfectly and even rumbles, so i guess i removed the current limiter.
I have doubts now:
- Is desecrating one of the poor little resistors okay or should it be bridged but in working order?
- Will my Playstation Classic short circuit to death any second, or my crap work did the trick permanently and with no damage?
Does this mod have any effect on the controllers?
Hello I just got PSC (second hand) for my sister. The console worked when I tried it at the seller but when I got home it said "controller not recognized in port 1, press x to continue". Neither port and controller works. Controllers work on PC when I tried so it must be the USP ports that are fried. Also when first booting the PSC I used Apple charger and it didn't want to boot so I used my Samsung charger and it worked but the USB ports don't. Is there a way to fix it ? Thank you

Just tired to do this mod and ended up removing a resistor on usb port 2… how screwed am I? Please help!
OK, this 100% didn't work. Can it accept ANY usb after doing this? I thought that was the whole point?

Hey do you know how to make ps classic auto start when it detects power?
Why would you want this? It would always be on, and if you intend to unplug it when you're done instead of powering it off using the button, that's a great way to corrupt files.
I did this and usb all three still ain’t working is there some models that can’t be modded
I bought the Carbon pen he linked in the video and followed his method exactly as he did in the video and it still isn't working for me.
I wondered this
Why can't you just remove the resisters completely and that work without connecting the points? I would think it would just remove the resistance. Sorry not an expert by any means on how these things work. I was messing with mine and one of the little resisters broke off. Now I'm not really sure if I can fix it or not. You mentioned soldering over the points if you remove them. I assume this is "no wire needed" and you just solder a blob on the 4 points to connect them?
I too had issues soldering, except I accidentally removed both resistors. I thankfully found this comment after a few mins of thinking I created a 40 dollar paper weight. I just bought a Hakko soldering kit specifically for this hack. Mr. Hartl made it look so easy and I'm now incredibly humbled and lucky that I didn't destroy my console. I appreciate the video, you've saved me from having to wait for OTG support, in addition to being arrogant, I'm also pretty impatient and I've grown sick of looking at my powered USB hub's neon green glow, in addition to the PSC's green power light, its one too many lights.
@@edwardcormie4973 PLEASE HELP I accidentally removed resistor for USB port #2... my second usb port went from at least showing the Sandisk Cruzer usb stick light indicator to now only showing a dim flash when plugged in or removed. i tried using a usb 3.0 4 port hub and connecting the Cruzer 2.0 USB stick to it but still no autobleem launching so far... I removed the resistor on accident and in a panic dropped a big solder ball on all 4 points of the resistor. PLEASE HELP
@@vgrepairs did you read anything any of the fine people said bridge those points and you're good
Question. Could you just bridge those two points with a small blob of solder? They're so close together I'm not even sure a wire would be necessary.
Yes, I'm not sure why the wire is even there.
I tried it now and it works thank you so much 👍
what happens when you short all four of those things, instead of only the two specified in the screenshot?
You could use silver paint, the paint you use on Amiga 1200 Keyboard Membranes
i used silver and it broke the board, it is highly conductive compare to carbon, i do not recommend it
is the flux required when soldering? or is the usual lead used enough?
Hi,I have melted both the resistor on port 2.What should i do?Are there any solution to fix?Because usb stick 3.0 not booting.Pls help
got a psclassic from a local game trading shop and stuff like that, it is modded but instead of shorting the resistors it has the top resistor from port 2 removed ._. it turns on and recognizes the controller along with a usb hub but...dont know if that was a safe move...got it for 15 bucks
Whats max output now from USB ports once 100 mHa has been modded ? Thanks
Based on the wiki 1.5A.
My soldering iron was too big and the chips are way too small.... I had no magnifying glass and have never soldered before but somehow I did it and it was a complete success 💪
I did the same thing, the only difference is that i removed the resistors since all of them has no sense in having in there, because shorting them basically makes them useless, so then i removed the smd resistors and soldered a dab on both where the resistors was once installed. Its been working great and permanently powering my usb and hub :)
Hello !Can you tell me exactly how I can do it?After you remove the 2 resistors of you have 4 points. You make a bridge just like resistors was before or you make a bridge unify all 4 points together using a blob of soler?I'm not sure how to do it corectly.I have to mention that I have already remove all for resistors for both usb ports.Thx in advance!
@@liviugabrielmares5246 - Sorry late response, you can unify all four points since i just did that and its fine.

David Clark - find a good electronics repairer like ourselves & have them replace the missing resistor..depending upon where you live, it will most likely cost you just short of what it costs to buy a new PS Classic. My honest advice would be to buy a new, unmolested, unbutchered console
@@woodstockxx it works for player 2 input control, i might just have to live with it. thank you anyways, i hate microsoldering so goddamn much.
It's a shame that they don't inform about this in those Autobleem videos. I've had nothing but issues whilst trying to use Autobleem, I've used 3 different USB thumb drives with no luck, so far. This will be the last thing that I try.
Agree Lee, this could have been done from day one gggrrr
I did to but buy a scandisk cruzer blader usb it works without modding I've tested it and I'm using it
Did you figure it out ?
Any thoughts as to why they would have limited the ports in the first place?
@@DoctorDalek Thinking about it myself. They only have 1amp from the power supply, so it's probably more to reserve 600ma for the system and not have it go to the peripherals.
I removed (by accident) one of the resistors..so (I have multiple of this systems) I removed all of the Resistors and shortened the free solderpoints at both of the USB ports. I thought that I can trash the system but it worked also....I had issues before, that a large USB 3.0 and the 8Bitdo wireless adapter was to much for the System. Now It all works fine!
Hey! I want to use two 8bitdo usb adapters so I think I must use a usb hub, any hint about it? This process can help?

Will USB to PS1 or PS2 controller work with this mod?
What temperature should the soldering iron be at for this mod?
whatever temp melts your solder. most people go for 300c
I tried this method out with a conductive ink pen since I don't have any soldering skills but it still won't read any of my USB flash drives. Would my next best bet be to purchase a USB hub to get it to read?

Use a non powered hub and maybe use for power supply an AC adapter to 5v 1500ma from a cellphone charge.

@@DoctorDalek its 1.5 Amps and charging my phone. So idk whats wrong besides maybe a format setting. Or maybe it's a compatibility issue between autobleem and 128gb 3.0 sandisk cruzers. I guess I'll try every format option and different builds of autobleem. Maybe something will give
@@DoctorDalek I'm pretty sure I formatted it to fat32. Like my previous stick but maybe I wasn't thinking right at that moment and accidentally picked exfat.

@@DoctorDalek Thanks for quick answer. To add more storage memory, we can only replace eMMc flash to 32 or so gb... That really sad.
If you use foil or tape a wire. You can also purchase heat resistant, and non conductive polyimide tape to enclose the resistor. I use that tape on a few of my projects, to protect possible shorts, as a double safety measure :)
You can get it from Amazon, in rolls of different widths.
Couldnt you just connect the 2 points with 1 dab of solder since it's so close and so small? Just curious.

Effing hell many of my games wont boot at all even if I have a cheap OTG adapter. I think its that adapter now that is the bottleneck here. I need to try this method and see if it works. It should work with a USB hub on a shorted port eh?
