Zipper tabs are a great way of shortening or lengthening zippers and add a personal touch. Today I’m going to show you a super easy zipper tabs tutorial so that you don’t need to be looking for the perfect zipper for ages.

I was watching a most excellent Invisible Zipper video by Kenneth D. King and wondered why they didn't take it the next level by at least finishing off the zipper with a zipper tab. I went looking for a tab video and found this one! The neatest, cleanest, and most professional application I have ever seen!

How do you figure out how much to cut the zipper? Do you cut it to the exact size of your fabric? This is the part that has always confused me.

It depends on the project but I usually cut mine a little longer. If I don't use tabs using a longer zip is not an issue at all, as the zipper can be trimmed once the project is done. If I use tabs I calculate the final length of the zip (tabs included) to be just slightly longer than the fabric, maybe about 1/8" on both ends. This is not an issue as well, as the ends will be sewn with the seam and can be trimmed afterwards to match the seam. When using tabs my goal is to leave enough room for the zipper to open up but also I like to have the tabs visible enough in the final project.
