    Everyone attention!
    Difference in Larp and SCA.
    Larp=fantasy world filled with everyone and everything right out of a Tolkien book filled with magic and all that jazz
    SCA= recreation of medieval battle. No magic or dragons.
    Things that they both have: Fun,castles, siege weapons and mass gatherings.

    I cannot answer to ishouldplayzelda for some strange youtube vodoo, but let me tell you this: it's for fun and for the trill of enjoying the fight, i am not in the sca but i do watch a moderate ammount of videos about it and the competitiveness is ruining it, everyone is using sword and shield becouse it is the most effective, killing the show (for me as audience it is all about the show)

    The SCA is not similar to LARP, people must learn the difference.

      *****
      Magic spells, trolls, monsters, elves, and all the other fantasy stuff is perfectly fine in its place. But that is the big difference. SCA tries (sometimes well, sometimes poorly, depending on the INDIVIDUAL) to recreate aspects of actual real life history. Not fantasy. Not role playing. Just being ourselves, with a common thread of trying to include historical aspects from different times and place. Do you like to sew? Make medieval garb. Do you like to cook? Make medieval feasts. Do you like to go camping? We have several wars you might enjoy. Do you like to engage in sports? Practice medieval combat. Do you like to do woodworking? Make medieval furniture. Do you enjoy playing musical instruments? The local dancers would love to see you come to practice. The list goes on and on and is only limited by one's degree of personal motivation. What we DON'T do is attempt to act out a fantasy role playing game. We do stuff that we would love to do anyway, we just do it within the context of historical recreation. The insults that you speak of are not so much directed at the LARPers themselves, but at the misunderstanding of the difference. Make no mistake, a great many SCAdians love to play role playing fantasy games. But there is a place and time for everything. Magical weapons and spells have no place in the SCA. Striving for real life historical accuracy in the details of your hand embroidered gown has no place in LARP. The problem is when people assume it's all the same. Clearly there is a world of difference. So...what is YOUR background? Are you SCA or LARP? Or both?

      rmcdaniel423 Can you explain SCA heraldry and character names? SCA is a historically accurate larp...

    • @NevadaB88
      @NevadaB88 10 лет назад

      It's true that you do create a "character" within the sca. I cant speak for larpers, never having played, but I can tell you that when you pick a name it goes into a submission process where it is checked for historical acuracy. You also need peer reviewed documentation to support that name choice. You need to describe what culture and time period this name is from and give documentation for that. Sca heraldry goes through the same process, however there are rules when designing hearldry. For example, certain colors cannot be next to other colors, and there is a limit to how complex a design can be. So yes, the sca is really a giant group of larpers, but the difference being they strive as best they can for historical accuracy.

    • @captain_tripps7015
      @captain_tripps7015 10 лет назад +1

      Oh so since you have rules its not a larp :p My LARP has rules about naming conventions too.

      Captain_Tripps
      LARP = Live Action Role Play. That acronym leaves out an important part: the G in "Game". LARPers all participate together in a concerted Live Action Role Playing Game. It's a clear offshoot of D&D and other RPG's. I don't mean that in any sort of demeaning way, understand. But that's the whole point of what LARP is doing. SCA differs in that everyone sorta just does their own thing. Sometimes that involves fighting in the same battle (while the vast majority of the rest of the event just does their own thing) or cooking in the same kitchen (while the vast majority of the rest of the event just does their own thing), etc. We have names and heraldic insignia for identification purposes, but most of us don't actually play those personas as "roles" within an organized cohesive game. LARP has a much stronger component of acting than what we do in SCA. It's more like Ren Faire in that regard. Very few people make any attempt at all to "stay in character" in any meaningful way. That is one of the big differences between Ren Faire and SCA as well. Rennies are playing characters (often with amazing detail), while SCAdians are just being ourselves (but within the context of historical ambience). Those that do attempt to be always "in character" are sorta the extremists of our group. Personas are really just a point of historical focus for the stuff we make. An SCA event has lots of organized little BITS, but by and large it is just an unorganized, largely random, free-for-all get together of people who have fun making and doing things in a historical context. An immensely varied historical context.

    Vikings are not like pirates at all. They were poor peasants who couldn't farm, so instead had to raid.

    • @lordilluminati5836
      @lordilluminati5836 9 лет назад +1

      they may have begun like that, but vikings turned to lives of pure pillaging, becoming seasoned and rich in the process. also poverty does not justify theft

    • @ianburnham
      @ianburnham 7 лет назад

      that is completely and totally wrong. Vikings were often just your average citizen who served to protect there country, triad with other nations, and (okay you got this right) raid and pillage, but there was a lot more to it. most vikings owned land, servants, they weren't "poor peasants" by any stretch. read a history book, please

    I was in it 8 years and left. The SCA is absolutely a joke. If you want to fight, be prepared to have some teeth missing and some broken bones. My after my first couple fights, I got my arm broken and have had ribs broken, collarbone broken, ACL torn and have suffered major concussions. If you are not afraid of getting some bones broken go for it. Just be prepared to deal with a lot of BS and a lot f politics. A lot of people are leaving because it’s all screwed up. Good luck to though’s welling and brave enough to join.
