That is amazing footage - I am in there, Sir Marshall of Eaglesbane, on my knees fighting with a short mace (why - I do not know), round shield, against Sir Lucky - Also, Earl Kevin, my knight, is seen in a white helmet, white armor, fighting Duke Paul. Even Duke Angus is seen marshaling some of the fights, black beard, Black armor with a horse emblem on his chest, and tartan trim. The film is a who’s-who of my teachers and trainers and peers... Lucky was always a tough but great fight. I lost to him in the semi-finals of that crown or the next one... - he hit me with the spinning move he used near the end of the video. (Lucky had the Freon-tank helm, chain-mail, and the shield with the roundel in the upper corner...) Duke James Grayhem with the gray brig - fighting left-handed. If I remember, James won that crown, defeating Luck in the final round. If I reach back in my memory, I could name many more of the fighters. Amazing video... thanks for sharing... truly amazing

This footage was taken by Hal Ravn (Hal Heydt) using a 16mm camera, shot at quadruple speed, so that it could be projected in slow-motion and allow the fighters to criticize their own and each other's technique. Going by the heraldry (when I could see it), among the fighters were Sir Steven MacEanruig, Sir William of Houghton, and Sir Michael the Lucky (the shield with the light-colored circle in the upper right (his right, not the viewer's). I also saw Sir James Greyhelm with his helm off, for about one second. Fighters, this is why you should put your emblazons on your shields, so that later generations will know who you were. Hal's comment on seeing it: "Any Marshal nowadays would cringe at the primitive equipment they were using." --Dorothea of Caer-Myrddin

That should be Sir William the Lucky. He was never called "Sir Lucky" at the time -- "Bill", rather.

Quick question, which William of Houghton? Elder or his son? What blazon was his? OK several quick question ;).

@@robertfoley8414 That would be the elder Houghton, not his son Chris

(Hal Heydt) Given when it was shot, it'd be the elder. Also, in the frame shown before launching the video, that's James Greyhelm fighting William the Lucky with Duke Richard (the Short) of Montroyal next to Steven MacEanruig.

The opening parts are some of the--relatively rare--color footage I shot at the time. It was expensive. It was shot with Ektachrome Commercial (aka ECO), which is ISO 25 (Tungsten) and ISO 15 when filtered for daylight. One doesn't dare actually project ECO. The first step after development is the make a workprint on Kodachrome, which can be safely run through a projector. The Black & White portions would have been shot on 4x Pan reversal, giving a positive image at ISO 400, making shooting at 64 frames per second vastly easier.

(Hal Heydt) Please note that it's Hal posting from Dorothy's account as she is, alas, no longer available to do so herself. (Nor was she familiar with many of those technical details.)

Still own an old flattop (1st Crusade, yes?) helm like these.

I also after watching this again seem to notice that the average shield size was rather SCA normal in this- when did the shields in the West shrink?

Speaking as a current fighter, I'm surprised at the number of shots they didn't take. I didn't take some of that now I'd be up shit creek with the chiv!

Rafael Pozos Interesting, isn't it? I'd love to hear from people who were really there about what was going on.

Rafael Pozos I agree. just before 2 min's, the Florentine guy takes a shot to the head. it is a blast. hopefully, it was a 2/3 bout and he called it and they were continuing on to fight 2 or 3. otherwise...

That's what I am hoping too or maybe a warm up, but if you look at the shot that the two sword fighter hit his opponent with a moment beforehand, you have to think there is something else going on, and that (hopefully) this wasn't a tourney fight.

That was a time of heavy hitting. many of us were trained by Paul and the style did not include the whippier shots that later became more popular. A lot of fighters gave hard and expected the same.

@@Drjsilverstein Yup. If the shot didn't rock 'em, it wouldn't get counted. Sometimes wouldn't anyway.
