  • Here's a quick bout testing out the Kvetun Slot Hilt sabre with an 80cm Easton Mk3 blade. It's actually pretty good!
You can watch the corresponding first look video from when I first got the sabre here: • First Look: Kvetun Arm...
Fencing-wise, I honestly feel quite rusty and unfocused at the moment due to a lack of regular training and longer pauses in-between. Putting in more time again right now, so that should help!

Looked solid and clean. You can't say that about a lot of the fencing we find on the internet. Always enjoy your bouts 😀

Nice sparring! I'm also getting a slot hilt sabre and I wonder if you find it difficult to adapt from a Victorian big shell sabre. I feel like right off the bat my hand would get hit much more often.

That's a reasonable question but I've found that a slot hilt is a decent middle ground between a full bowl guard and a minimal stirrup hilt. The thumb and back of the hand are still quite protected by the slot hilt I think.

Re watching this vid. My slot hilt is coming and I can't wait to spar with it

Nice, has it arrived since you commented?

@@historyandsabre It's still on its way! I got the black fencer 1803 one, not kvetun one but I assume they are pretty similar

@@BS-bd5uq Yes, they are both very good. In short, the BF blade feels better and the Kvetun hilt is made better.

@@historyandsabre Glad to hear that Kvetun's slot hilt well made! I primarily fence with Kvetun's standard bowl hilt easton sabre and we fence pretty hard. That bowl is so thin that I had to flatten it almost every three weeks with a hammer or it would be filled with dents. I may order just the slot hilt and see it if can last long without getting deformed.

How do you think they compare to the Blackfencer version?

    • @historyandsabre

In short, I think the Kvetun is better-made overall and definitely more robust. The BF gets chewed up pretty badly after some use in my experience. The BF blade feels a tad nimbler for handling and drilling but as soon as you get them moving, either one is a solid option. The Kvetun comes threaded as a standard, so you can take it apart, if you care about that (I don't very much).

@@historyandsabre Thanks. I have both Kvetun rapiers and BF sabres in my bag. The BFs are very nimble and I like them a lot. Guess I'll have to get a Kvetun sabre and BF rapier. Purely in the interests of scientific research and fairness, obviously 😁
