I love all your videos, but this one particularly. I worked for a unit of Bayer AG in Indiana, and visited Heidelberg on a cloudy, misty Tuesday in November 1986 on a recreational group tour with fellow employees. That included the group tour of the Schloss and thus the interior, but the truly impressive part was that intricate exterior facade. I had seen an article on Heidelberg before the trip and split off by myself after lunch to see the Studentinkarzer. At that time, there was a fellow sitting on the landing of the staircase with a little money box to collect admission, just 1-2 DM per person. One of my coworkers in Indiana was a German on an interim assignment who'd attained his doctorate at Heidelberg. After I got back home, he asked to see my trip pictures. As he went through the stack, he exclaimed "Ach!!! Der Studentinkarzer!!!" when he saw it. He then admitted that he spent something like six years in Heidelberg but never visited it--not even once.
Ahhh, isn't that the truth! When you live in a place, you always think you'll get to the tourist attractions one day. So cool that you got to see the student jail and share the photos with your coworker!
Great video! I went to high school at Heidelberg American High School from 1980 - 1984. Best years ever. Our prom was at the Heidelberg Castle. Tough to beat that...
Lovely video. I live and work in Heidelberg for close to two years now but I am yet to fully explore the beautiful city. Thanks for visiting us. Do come again.😊
I was lucky enough to live in Heidelberg for 3 years.Heidelberg and the whole Kurpfalz region is amazing. I was able to move back a couple years ago within an hour’s drive. The Korean restaurant is “ON” I believe, very good, as I lived in Korea for four years.
I absolutely love your channel. Also how passionate you are about delicious food. Appreciate the effort you put into your videos that you share with us. Take care and safe travels.
Your videos give me the best chill vibes, like I’m living vicariously through your adventures and personalities. I’m an ICU nurse in the middle of a big COVID surge here in Michigan, and on my days off I play your videos while doing housework or errands, and it brings me so much joy. May Gd give you the strength and energy to keep doing what you love. Greetings from Detroit!
Thank you very much! I'm really hoping cases can drop at some point soon. It has been the healthcare workers like you that are the heroes of this pandemic.
My fellow Canadians I love your videos. These ones have made me so homesick for Germany. My yearly travel there has been halted for the past two years. I am planning on getting there this May or June. Fingers crossed.
One experience that totally left me speechless And though my words don’t come close to fully capturing the essence of this incredible phenomenon, this is definitely one of the best and most inspirational excerpts, especially for travel lovers.
Really happy u guys visited one of my absolute favourite city! Love Heidelberg! Was there in 2019. I stayed in the old town very close to the Jesuit church. there are some great food options and restaurants in the city. One i should mention is Weinstube Schnitzelbank for German food. A small charming almost hidden place but very popular also. Their schnitzels are just fantastic. Also The Dubliner for good Irish food. Hopefully will visit again one day.
Thank you for an awesome vlog that brought me closer to my aunt (long story), it warmed my heart, and I teared up a bit. You also got my stomach during that last meal. Yum!
You forgot to visit the Kloster in Heidelberg Ziegelhausen and to drink organic beer brewed by Priesters. It is also a good idea to visit the Carl Bosch museum in Schlierbach.
Heidelberg is a college town of southwest Germany, reputed for its universities and romantic cityscape. Surrounded by forested hills, it sits on the banks of the Neckar River.
Happy New Year!! Sam and Audrey, Harriet and I have been to Heidelberg many times and loved it. Harriet's Company takes her back there frequently. You were spot on to what attracts us there.👍👍👍 Harriet and I think that the food is so underrated. We loved it and had many of the traditional dishes. You guys covered a lot in 3 days. You hit all the right notes😍😍 We have many friends there particularly from the University. Harriet and I have many fond memories of Heidelburg and keep going back. Thank You for a Great and informative video for those who have thoughts of visting Sending you lots of love.💖💖 Jim and Harriet. Richmond, Va.
Here is number 16, we drove from SW France to Heidelberg in oct 2015. Bought a 8.5m motor cruiser boat, participated in the yacht club regatta over 4 days as guests. Cruised to Mannheim, then had the boat trucked to our home port of La Rochelle, France. We had a great time with the people of Heidelberg !
i live kinda close to Heidelberg (1 hour train ride) and i try to go there as much as i can, mostly to find motivation to study in libraries but im still in love with the city and i will never get bored of it
Great video. I was in Heidelberg a few months ago with my older son. Fun place to visit and only an hour from Frankfurt. Several good breweries there. One right next to the restaurant you featured.
Wow!! Another great video and a place I will have to stop at next time my wife and I are in Germany. We've always travelled through onto other spots but have never stopped... so next time we are stopping. Other interesting towns to check out in Germany are Cochem, Trier, Bamberg, Marburg, and Gorlitz on the Polish border. Thanks again for a great tour and video of Heidelberg.
I’ve been to Heidelberg several times but have never seen as much as your video shows. Great video. I had always believed Heidelberg was situated on the banks of the Rhine River and found it curious that you never mentioned it. 😂. Now I know better after having consulting an online map. Thank you. By the way, that Korean food looked amazing.
Whenever I see Audrey explaining, she was really similar to someone. I always pondered whom it might be? Now I have found out whom she looks like. Audrey just looks like Jacinda Ardern, NZ PM. Used to live in Heidelberg in the Altstadt on Fischergasse. Attended the university. I sooooo miss it. The University of Heidelberg is spread throughout the city, including Neuenheimerfeld, the newest campus. There, it is more of a typical American/Canadian university.
Hey, I'm from Heidelberg and I think it's a nice video, very informative and beautiful! 😊 However, I want to point out two things you said that aren't completely true actually. First, the Heidelberger Schloss wasn't destroyed by lightning and fire only, it was destroyed by the French under Ludwig XIV. This fact is more important (to us) because it was hit by lightning much later in history, like you said 1:28, when people tried to rebuilt it and this has nothing to do with the actual destruction during war. Second, and correct me if I'm wrong but I think you did not walk up the "Philosophenweg", the philosophers way, but the "Schlangenweg", snake way. You even showed the sign at 7:18 that says snake way. I walked it quite often so from what you showed I recognise it as that. The Schlangenweg actually leads to the Philosophenweg. It is beautiful and it has viewing points too where you have a wonderful view over the city but the Philosophenweg is where you really have amazing views. There is a garden with palm trees and other exotic plants where you can sit and also have a stunning view over the city. The Philosophenweg is actually pretty even to walk, the only section where its really steep is when you come from the Institute for Physics in Neuenheim, it starts there. There are also some playgrounds for kids on the way too and some signs where you can learn about nature. A little Insider-Info: The most stunning view over Heidelberg and the Neckar-Valley is from the Bismarck-Tower way way up. It is located behind the little garden I mentioned and is not directly on the Philosophenweg but if you want to have the most breath-taking view you should go there even if it's as steep as the beginning of the Philosophenweg. :) However, this of course has nothing to do with the Philosophenweg in general. I just wanted to point out that if you actually went along the Philosophenweg you should have shown these things. But maybe (or I hope you did) you did walk there and just didn't put it in the video! Of course I know you cannot see everything due to time but in that case it is worth it, especially when you point out a highlight of Heidelberg. Fun fact: The "Stift Neuburg" mentioned in the comments is also reachable from the Philosophenweg but that requires a really long walk through the woods. Greetings and best wishes from Heidelberg! ❤ I hope you visit again!
I got engaged at the castle! And now I study there, (after a break as I work now) at that amazing university. I haven’t been in the prison though, thank goodness! Thanks for the restaurant tips. I didn’t know about the Korean place.
I have been to the castle. I actually got to see the largest wine barrel. There is a small dance floor on the top of it. In one spot there was a little bridge that you went under. if you look up it is open and hollow. I climbed up inside and on each end there were doors that were locked, I realized that that was a crawl space for soldiers to get from on place to another with out being seen. Me and my friends did some exploring by going over a small chain that said Zutrit Verboten which means entry forbidden. The path led to a cemetary that is on the grounds hidden away from every one. We got caught on our way out by the castle personel and almost got kicked out. We did find out that the big wall with all the windows was actually a way of making attacking armies to think the castle was bigger than it actually was by making the winows smaller as the wall got higher. I just wish i had the money at the time to take a tour. I was in the US army stationed in Darmstadt which is about 40 minutes from there. I was stationed there from 88 to 91, then stayed there after I was released from service for another 4 years.
I really love your channel. Also you guys so love Korean food. I am from Korea so i really excited to watch this video. When you come to Korea, you can try different Korean dishes. All of food in Korea are superfoods. You are eating them that's why you will be getting younger.
Thank you very much! Audrey and I met many years ago when we were teaching English in Korea. We really miss it! And you're right about the food being delicious and very healthy as well.
Some of the best Korean food I ever had was in Germany. Especially around K-town. Many of the Koreans in Baden-Wurtemburg/Rheinland-Pfalz have some sort of connection with the US military. Either spouse/dependents who ended up just settling in Germany
So sorry you are leaving Germany (for now), we have really enjoyed your videos and have actually changed our travel plans to go to some of the places you went to (Hamburg, Luneburg, Celles). What time of year were you there, it looks quite mild in Heidelburg!
I was born in Heidelberg years ago . My mother had a lot of pictures form over there , but unfortunately her niece’s husband stolen them they was in a tin and he thought it had old money , when we figured it out he had burned them .. would love to have more of them
I've got to say - I've been so many times to Germany but somehow missed this gem. Also, has Sam been working out lately? He seems more buff than ever ☺️
Hi guys, German looking for Restaurant recommendations here - I got some really good impressions, thank you! I don't want to be "that guy" but you might want to update the Video Timestamps: the last restaurant is called "Hackteufel" - Hack being short for "Hackfleisch", the German term for minced meat and "Teufel" being the German term for devil. This might be helpful for non-natives trying to google it. Have a great day!
Oh you couldn't climb the stairs of the bigger wine barrel? Guess they closed it due to the pandemic. As a Heidelberg resident, I loved taking my friends there when they'd visit.
Hi Audrey & Sam. I am glad that you found a good Korean restaurant because it is not easy to find one in Germany, which is at least half-way authentic. Most of them serve some kind of Euro-Asian-Trash (some of them actually have "Bibimbap-Soup", "Sweet&Sour Korean Chicken" and "Korean Pizza" on the menu - ughh...). I think that good authentic Korean cuisine is really something that is missing here...
If you want to get closer to the environment and reason for the student jail maybe listen to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. It reflects perfectly what went on at night with those students and it’s precisely about the students rebellious behavior in medieval times . 😂 Thank you Sam and Audrey, I used to dream in my teenager years coming to the University of Heidelberg, but to study hard, not for the Taberna’s drinking and dancing - to clarify.
The story I got before I visited there in 1986 was that the most common offence for being thrown in the Studentinkarzer was mouthing off to a professor.
Hello! Did you know all of the delicious foods you had in Peru was made with veggies which were contaminated by pesticides and heavy metals? I wish you mentioned this in your video!

I had my junior senior prom in Heidelburg. Went to the U.S. military high school there. Fun Fun Fun.....🥰🥰🤩🤩
Whenever I see Audrey explaining, she was really similar to someone. I always pondered whom it might be? Now I have found out whom she looks like. Audrey just looks like Jacinda Ardern, NZ PM. Audrey not just looks like her. Her manner of communicating is also like her. Samuel and Audrey channel is really spectacular. Admirable.
Thank you! That is interesting to hear. We'll have to watch some videos of her to see for ourselves.

Cool to hear Kevin! Do you revisit from time to time?
The giant wine barrel is the most important part, because you had to keep up the spirits of all the knights it took to defend the castle.
Hey, I'm from Heidelberg and I think it's a nice video, very informative and beautiful! 😊
However, I want to point out two things you said that aren't completely true actually.

We really lucked out finding this place! It was run by a Korean family and their dishes transported us right back there.

The story I got before I visited there in 1986 was that the most common offence for being thrown in the Studentinkarzer was mouthing off to a professor.
