Let me know your favorite intro to a Sonic game! (Also, when I say intro I'm talking mostly about the first level of the game, not necessarily just the opening cutscene..)
If we are going by level rather than cutscenes, for me its a tie between Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic 3 because it starts out as a tropical jungle then Dr. Eggman's forces light the whole area on fire, having a complete tonal shift in the very beginning of the stage. (If we are counting cutscenes, Knuckles punching out Super Sonic is pretty cool, and Sonic Unleashed's opening cut scene is definitely the best in the franchise)
Sonic then This game of tag is boring! I'm outta here! (Big Foot appears) Ha! finally decided to show up, eh? Okay, bring it on! Sonic now Hey, did somebody here order a clobbering? [The submarine makes a sound.] Are you sure? It says somebody ordered an extra large clobbering topped with everything. [The submarine blinks.] Hmm, okay... tell ya what. I can't take this thing back so I'll give you an extra large clobbering for nothing. Hope you're hungry. Talk about obnoxious. I could very easily see it being by the time Colours - Forces Sonic had finished talking, Adventure - Black Knight Sonic would have already had things wrapped up. EDIT: I mostly say Adventure to Black Knight because that was he started talking in the games. But really it's 1991-2009
It's not so much that Sonic stopped aiming for "Cool" so much that what they aim for as being "Cool" is so much more restricted now. Back in the day Sonic had is Way Past Cool kind of tryhard stuff, but he also was just a cool guy, especially in promotional materials. He had places to go, people to see, he raced in sports cars just because, he did DJing, he snowboarded, he skis, he did skateboarding, he had a band, he was always just up to some cool shit. Nowadays, all they really do with him is crack off Epic Dudebro jokes and one-liners, which is the moder equivalent to his Way Past Cool tryhard content. But he doesn't have anything else to fall back on. Depending on how he's depicted, he a lazy layabout who only does things when it tickles his rivalry bones, he a bland faceless shonen hero who's just out doing shit so he can be in the right place at the right time or worst of all, he can be a boring wet blanket who's more interested in his next nap than anything that anyone brings to him. A lot of cool is formed through what you do. And Modern Sonic doesn't do much that doesn't involve beating Eggman or having yet another dick measuring contest with Shadow.
@@theminecraft2516 Nah, Cowboys are cool and action packed. It's weird though, how Sonic started acting like a mid 30 year old before his 20th anniversary.
SA2's Sonic levels are generally smart. Every single Sonic level sets up a situation where Sonic's speed is really important for the story. City Escape - Escape from the military forces as fast as possible Metal Harbor - Escape from the military forces that are trying to get Sonic locked up again Green Forest - Find Amy and Tails before Prison Island blows up Pyramid Cave - Get inside the Eggman's hidden base and find a shuttle to stop Eclipse Cannon from firing(Remember that Eggman has already set the timer by this point) Crazy Gadget - Get to Eggman before he kills(!) Amy Final Rush - Get to Eclipse Cannon before it fires
Yessssss, totally agree. If just being fun wasn't reason enough to go fast, the game actually gave Sonic a reason to go as fast as possible story-wise.
I love the giant truck chase in Generations even better, they took the absurd set piece, and then decided, screw it giant saw blades, rockets and defying gravity to follow Sonic on the side of the buildings.

What I wonder about is....in the japanese version of the first cutscene, the soldier says "The hedgehog is gone, alongside every colleague on board." Where did everyone go? xD
the one that I think is the best sonic intro, is the one that appears on sonic cd. the animation and action combined with the movements of sonic and the flexibility of the character makes the intro a unique piece. What is most surprising about the anination is how well Sonic is drawn as a character. Sonic CD is the third game in the main series and at that time there were not many references to how Sonic had to be seen from the front, from his back or from angles that would not normally be seen in the naturalness of 2d games. that added to the movement so caricature and brusque of sonic make the anination feel very special by itself. Another intro very similar to that of CD is that of sonic unleashed, the action combined with the lack of speech by sonic and all its actions communicated by the body, make the two not very far from being the definitive representation of sonic (Sorry for my english, i use google translator)

I like both tbh. Sonic Adventure has a grand sense of well, Adventure and is really great for immersion. I'd prefer if this one got remade first (ofc). But at the same time Sonic Adventure 2 took everything from the first game and made it like 200% better. I think we we got perfect remakes of both games then we can properly guage the superior one. For now I like both equally.
@@Temzy I think SA1 should definitely be remade. A seemless open version of what the developers originally intended combined with today's technology, Sonic Adventure has the potential of being on even ground. I think SA2 doesn't need a remake (as badly). I think, if they remade SA1 they'd have to use the new cast and make some small adjustments to the overall story. @@JustJohn43 I think Adventure 2 is just as great as it needs to be. It's my top 3 favorite Sonic game. It has great story and most of the levels are really fun. Not to mention the Chao Garden. I, too, think it doesn't need a remake as quickly as Adventure 1.
the way he jumps off of an attack helicopter and does a pose before landing on the ground, riding on it with a makeshift snowboard is just the exaggerated swagger of our best blue hedgehog. it gives me the chills every time I look at it!
I agree that City Escape is a great introductory stage to a video game. It teaches you some of the basic mechanics of the game, with tutorials being optional, and without holding your hand. In fact, I recommend the whole Hero Story for anyone new to Sonic Adventure 2. It not only teaches you the ropes of the game, without being hand-holdy, but it also introduces the plot of the game without being too overwhelming or confusing. And when you play the Dark Story, after having beaten the Hero Story, you're already prepared for the more difficult levels that the Dark Story has to offer, while the plot starts to come together more, as you continue to play through the Dark Story, before being wrapped up so neatly in the Final Story.
Sa2’s first 15 minutes of the hero story establishes the conflict, the main character, the tone of the story, and the style of the game perfectly and even better than some high-budget movies and television series.
It’s not as visually interesting as Sonic Unleashed’s intro, but it gets Sonic’s character and the basic plot wrapped up in about a minute, and for that it’s one of the greats.
Unfortunately I don't remember the first time I played City Escape, I was around 5-6 years and never played a Sonic game before. What I DO remember is the truck. It made me SCREAM IN FEAR when it suddenly jumped out of nowhere, but I managed to do it no problem. After that, since SA2 had a repeat counter of how many times you played a stage, I remember playing the heck out of City Escape. I played the stage over 100 times, and that's only in one save file. It is my favorite stage for all time, and my very first time I controlled Sonic ever.
What are your thoughts on the first level of the Dark Side story, Iron gate? would you say most of what you said applies to Eggman's first level. There are at least a few parallels between them.
Iron Gate is a lot weaker than City Escape unfortunately. It just doesn't have that same amount of hype. The mech characters are the least interesting to play as IMO, but it's really interesting to play as Eggman for the first time and learn about Shadow's awakening.
@@chaomix sure, I would say it does feel better to play sonic than eggman. but it is still a good early mech stage. the presentation of iron gate is comparable to city escape.
I rented SA2 from Blockbuster when it first came out, I was in Jr High. I hope that doesn’t show my age bc Im old as fuck BUT I love seeing younger ppl enjoy these games as much as I did.
