Yup seeing all my favourite characters swearing in the JP subs of my childhood animes (Sonic X, Yu-Gi-oh!, Pokémon, etc) never ceases to make me chuckle.
I swear what's considered profanity is so ludicrously subjective, for example I always thought "heck" wasn't considered as foul language but seeing multiple folks react to Cream saying "what the heck!?" in the IDW comics, in a state of sheer shock kinda surprised me tbh.
I guess it's only surprising because Cream was the character that said it, someone who's known for being innocent and never using any profanity or profanity substitutes. If someone like Shadow or Knuckles said it, people wouldn't care.
7:55 Honorable Mention: In Sonic Movie 1, Sonic was initially meant to say: "We are a couple of badasses, just living by our own rules." But in the final, Sonic says: "We are a couple of loose cannons, just living by our own rules."
Another kinda instance I could think of was a line that was removed from Sonic Forces. The original script is available for viewing online and in the original, Silver says “B.S.” instead of “lies” in his meeting Infinite scene.
5:58 I always thought Sonic was doing his iconic finger wag, and the animators just didn't feel like fully drawing the individual fingers and flipped his hand to get around this.
I remember the days when I thought "stupid" and "shut up" were considered profanity to me. What an interesting time. For the series while I think we can all agree it's a little weird to even hear a "damn" out of these guys, "where's that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald" is an excellently delivered line.
All of the swearing really makes sense in the context of most Sonic characters (especially the anthropomorphic ones) are all teenagers. And teenagers are most notable for swearing like a sailor with their friends and such
Shadow the Hedgehog is an example of how *not* to implement natural swearing. The characters will say "damn" and only "damn" in every sentence and it's so obviously forced lmao.
Fun fact: In Shadow the Hedgehog’s opening cutscene, Shadow was originally supposed to say, “Just what the hell was that all about” but it was changed to “Just what was that all about.”
Fun fact: Junichi Kanemaru didn't even know he was swearing in Sonic X. He just thought he was saying the English word for "kuso". By the time he learned the truth, it was too late.
Wait, isn't "shit" the equivalent of "kuso"? It usually is translated to "merde" (shit) or "putain" ( kind of "damn' but litteraly means "whore") in french, so I assumed it was the same in english.
I never understood why "damn" is a considered a swear word, for me it's always been a way to censor "fuck" and it's variations, like "shoot" for "shit" and "heck" for "hell"
Well, "darn" is the censor for "damn" really, but yeah I 100% get what you mean, I've literally *never* seen "damn" as a swear word in my entire life while I always have seen "shit" and "fuck" as swear words
It's not a curse or swear exactly, but I was a little surprised Vector gets away with calling Rouge a broad in Sonic Heroes. Like I said, not really a swear, but most consider the term derogatory, so it's still crazy to me that they got away with it
My older brother said the exact same thing when this scene played while he was watching me play the game 😆 I didn't think much of it but he was like naw he pretty was calling her a hoe lol. It's especially apparent now given the way Vector says it and the way he motions 😆
Don't forget that Tom was about to say "Son of a bitch" in the first movie but got interrupted by Robotnik elbowing him. And in the second movie, Rachel called the commander an "A-hole"
@@kamicab715 it was after when it was revealed that her wedding with Randal was just a set up. She referred to the commander as "A-hole" when demanding what was happening
There was also a deleted scene in the first movie where Rachael calls Toms cop buddy (forgot his name) after she finds her car totaled and demands to call Tom where she says my ass.
Honestly I think it makes sense that Sonic characters curse because they're teenagers, and when I was a teenager pretty much everyone I knew sweared, so it wasn't a shock. However as a kid, my parents/family knew I loved Sonic but were protective of me from viewing adult content and that included swears, so when I heard Sonic/friends swearing I had to make sure I'm alone or kept the volume down, thankfully I wasn't caught as kid. Now as an adult knowing a bunch of Sonic character cursing is just really funny to me for some reason.
I was really surprised to hear things like "bollocks" and "Bastard" in Crash 4, despite its E10+ rating! The narrator even says "Kickass" at one point, I really hope this means the ESRB is playing it way more loose with the profanity ratings cause I really wanna hear Sonic curse for whatever reason 😭
To add on the video game examples of swearing in JP, in Lost World, Zazz says "Go to Hell" to Sonic and Eggman while the EN version had him say "Too bad for you".
In addition, in the JP version of forces, Sonic calls Infinite a masked prick In EN version, he just says "you got to tell me the secret of your power, I insist"
When I heard Junichi's Sonic actually say the Engrish word, "Shit!", in the JPN version of Sonic X, I was shocked and almost laughed the first time I heard he says that! That scene kept replaying in my head for years.
Probably my favorite instance of swearing in the Sonic series is from Sonic X in the Japanese dub where Sonic says Shit in English (full line was Shit 行くぞう which means "Shit we gotta go!") and it just feels like it came out of nowhere and it made me laugh so hard when I heard it the first time. The line was replaced in the English dub with "Cream, Hang on". I'm so glad you mentioned this in the video since it was my favorite one
Something else to mention here is that the characters would often say "kuso" in Sonic X, including Tails at one point, a term that translates in English differently depending on context. It's mostly translated in the subtitles to "damn", though. If anyone's wondering, Tails says "damn" near the end of season 2 when he's fighting Eggman back on Sonic's World shortly before Sonic arrives home late. It was kind of cathartic to see the best boi swear, not gonna lie.
Another honorable mention is Shadow's 2P intro line in the Japanese audio track of SA2. That one did draw concern from my mom until she realized the characters weren't speaking English.
The Japanese version of Shadow the hedgehog doesn't swear NEAARLY as much surprisingly enough. The bulk of the swearing is from the MASSIVLY butchered English localization of the game. Casey would then respond with "WHAT". Also, a storyboard of the first film has a moment where Ronotnik drops the f bomb on Sonic. The storyboard artist did it as a joke, and it obviously wasn't proposed. I'm sure there are more curse words throughout the franchise, but thought I'd share a couple I remembered.
Funny thing is hell can link to the bible and sometimes means it does not count as a bad word. Pokemon started censoring names if they had bad words in them but to date Hellfire works as a name as they let that pass because of the bible. So hell is allover the place on if it counts or not over here.
5:18 what's a bit funny is that the Zeti are supposed to be demons...But they barely look the part. so him threatening to send you to hell would be something he'd at least say to anyone
personally swearing in sonic doesn't affect me that much but I could see it affecting kids. Maybe they could include some sort of censorship system for songs and dialogue that you can turn on in the settings of their future games, I don't feel like swearing is necessary though, I do think Sonic could work without it but at the end of the day it's up to SEGA.
@@fishactivation5087 OK thx 4 stealing an article from Wikipedia, you must feel so damn smart right now, don't you? P.S Damn is not an explicit swearword.
I know that you already mentioned Japanese Sonic dropping some swear words in English, but in the Japanese versions of other Sonic games, there are minor swear words, even said by characters other than Sonic. Also, believe it or not, the Japanese version of Shadow the Hedgehog has less swearing than the English version. Sure, it still has it, but it's less frequent.
I honestly wanna see something like Shadow the Hedgehog again: Dark and mature. I wanna see the dark side of the Sonic universe. The mild swear words, to me, are damn, hell, crap, and maybe bastard. I also wanna see the Director's Cut of Shadow.
let me break it to you in plain and simple terms. Sonic? A pathetic attempt at creating a likable character. But Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse? They're on a whole different level. Hilarious antics, unforgettable humor, and unparalleled entertainment that never gets old. Sega? A joke compared to the true powerhouses of Disney and Warner Bros. So, put away that Sonic merchandise and embrace the real legends: Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Sonic? Trash.
6:09 Nah, Sonic ain’t flicking the bird. I thought at first, too, but if you look closely, that little ‘lump’ next to the pointed finger is his thumb. There would be another lump signifying an index finger, AND THEN his thumb if it were his middle finger. (I love to draw and constantly look at anatomy… had to use my own hand for reference to check this one lmao)
Well, there's a REALLY funny instant of swearing all the way back in Sonic CD. In the Spanish section of the CD European manual, the "Dash Zone" is called "Zonas putos" which translates to "Fucking Zone". No idea what went wrong there, lol!
I knew some folks consider "damn" swearing but I was surprised that "heck", "crap" and even "shut up" were also considered profanity in certain cultures and social circles.
Yeah... as a kid I had really protective parents so they consider these swears. It never bothered me but I had to make sure no one heard these words. Now as an adult I just find it funny.
I haven't read the comics, but I remember reading there's a scene where it seems like one of the characters is about to call Rouge a b1tch (only manages to say "b-"), and she punches said character in the stomach before saying something like "bat, that's right".
6:36 I heard Jun'ichi adlibbed that bit in Sonic X, as if he wasn't already the GOAT, that only further cements his legendary status as THE voice of Sonic. He truly is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever be.
@@markofthewolvessucks8930 I suppose everyone has their own opinion but I think he's the best and he makes the Meta Era watchable. It was a crime he did not get the gig as movie Sonic! Especially when Ryō Hirohashi was brought onto to voice Tails in the Japanese dub.
I remember hearing that the only reason Lost World has an E10+ rating is because of that one cutscene in which Eggman threatens the Deadly Six about halfway through the game
In some copies of Sonic Rush Adventure, Marine the Raccoon says "bugger", which more or less means "fuck". This is why some European copies are rated 12+ and others are 3+. Some people have also claimed Rush and/or Rush Adventure's soundtracks contain profanity, but I can't tell because the songs tend to be about as indecipherable as the Kingsmen's cover of Louie Louie. The sound compression really doesn't help with that.
This probably doesn’t count but there’s also Rouge asking if Topaz if she was into S&M *too.* in the Japanese version of Sonic X. not only saying that at all, but also implying Rouge herself is into that stuff.
Tangentially related, but even as a kid that actually liked Edgy the Hedgie, I remember being shocked that a Mega Man X game got away with implying an actually pretty hard swear, in Command Mission, the boss fight after you get Massimo in your party starts with him mocking the original Massimo, from who your party member got the armor from, and Massimo decks him in the face, and says "Feeble Massimo?! *_FEEBLE MASSIMO!?_* YOU SON OF A--" and is interrupted by the loading screen transition. Even I was shocked by that one, and I thought they should've gone full hog (heh) and had Sonic say "They really pissed off GUN" instead of "tick off" like in the final game.
I’m inspired by you man. I feel ashamed by the things I like some times and here you go with your unabashed love for sonic which I also share. Thank you for making your videos man
Fun fact: Eggman was the first sonic character to swear because in Segasonic the hedgehog that arcade game where u play as mighty Ray and sonic at the end of the game when u reach up to egg man he actually says dammit but u have to translate it from japenese to English to get it
11:09 it already did in Europe this game is pegi 12 which is the European equivalent of Teen rated and also Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic 06 are also pegi 12
Man I really wish they’d give other Sonic characters their own games again. Shadow definitely deserves a second chance with a sequel and a Blaze and Silver game would be really interesting to play.
I remember there was a few jokes in Sonic Boom where there were implied curse words that were censored. Such as when or Bob was decoding some Morse code from Eggman and it’s implied that Eggman said profanity.
Wow! I knew there was swearing in the games but I never knew there was this much! Also, there’s also Tom almost finishing the line “I’m the Donut Lord you son of a Bi-“ to Robotnik in Sonic Movie 1
In issue 19 of the Archie Sonic Universe comic, Tails says "Dammit" in French on the cover. The French word for "Dammit" is ,"Sacrebleu" if you didn't know. For context, Antoine is working with Tails and he was muttering it under his breath because Antoine was annoying him. It also seems like "Damn" is really the only swear word that Sega seems consistently okay with using in English versions of the games. It's infinitely more common, "ass" only appeared once, and "hell" appeared less than 10 times.
I hope they let Shadow swear a little bit in the third Sonic movie. It would be a nice touch given the profanity in his game, especially since I've heard the movie is taking inspo from his game as well as SA2.
let me break it to you in plain and simple terms. Sonic? A pathetic attempt at creating a likable character. But Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse? They're on a whole different level. I'd like to imagine 'damn' is one of the only actual swear words that exists in the Mobius Universe, forcing everyone to use it when they want to swear
I think profanity in some small cases is fine because, in my experience, Sonic was targeted to tweens and teens as much as he was kids. In fact, in the old days, he was targeted MORE towards tweens and teens as a way to set him apart from that nice guy Mario. Seriously, check out some of the old Sonic ads from back in the day. "What's blue and pisses all over everything," indeed. Sonic has always been more of a shonen franchise than a family-friendly kids series, anyway.

@@cartergamegeek The word hell isn't actually in the Bible
@@cartergamegeek true the word hell in its self is no swear word when it;s used it the context of hate or rage then it's a curse word

personally swearing in sonic doesn't affect me that much but I could see it affecting kids. Maybe they could include some sort of censorship system for songs and dialogue that you can turn on in the settings of their future games, I don't feel like swearing is necessary though, I do think Sonic could work without it but at the end of the day it's up to SEGA.

"Damn" and "Crap". True swearwords indeed. For real, I'm surprised the guy called them "swear words" instead of "inappropriate language" lol
What about the word "Sexy" from the lyrics in Wild Canyon?

I know that you already mentioned Japanese Sonic dropping some swear words in English, but in the Japanese versions of other Sonic games, there are minor swear words, even said by characters other than Sonic. Also, believe it or not, the Japanese version of Shadow the Hedgehog has less swearing than the English version. Sure, it still has it, but it's less frequent.
I didn’t even know people considered damn or hell as “swears” or whatever.
some people consider "shut up" as a swear

I honestly wanna see something like Shadow the Hedgehog again: Dark and mature. I wanna see the dark side of the Sonic universe.
The mild swear words, to me, are damn, hell, crap, and maybe bastard.
I also wanna see the Director's Cut of Shadow.
Yup
In the japanese Sonic Frontiers, while the music Vandalize plays, there's a part where they say: "Fuck the pain away"
let me break it to you in plain and simple terms. Sonic? Trash.
Another honorable mention would be when Tom says "I'M THE DONUT LORD YOU SON OF A-" in the movie
Also you forgot one, in the Sonic Movie 1 Tom says this line to Eggman during the final battle: "I'm Donut Lord, your son of-"
Don't forget the joke about shitake

"Sexy" is considered a swear by some, and is found in Sonic Adventure 2 in one of Knuckle's songs
"Rouge? Yeah, she's sexy and smooth."
That's word is also in one song from the 2014 movie, The Book Of Life.
All swears are risqué words, but not all risqué words are swears

Some unused gems of voice clips within Sonic Boom.

Ok I saw it
I think he's POINTING AT Metal Robotnik
Well, there's a REALLY funny instant of swearing all the way back in Sonic CD. In the Spanish section of the CD European manual, the "Dash Zone" is called "Zonas putos" which translates to "Fucking Zone". No idea what went wrong there, lol!

I knew some folks consider "damn" swearing but I was surprised that "heck", "crap" and even "shut up" were also considered profanity in certain cultures and social circles.
Yeah... as a kid I had really protective parents so they consider these swears. It never bothered me but I had to make sure no one heard these words. Now as an adult I just find it funny.
i cant believe you missed eggman saying “piece of shiitake planet” in sonic 2 because that genuinely made me do a double take in the theater
@MarioMugshotSupremacy69do you not understand what they were doing there lol
7:27 Wait crap is a bad word!?...WHAT! I did not know that.
It used to be
8:25 I would like to put out a mistake, holy crap is not a curse word.
Yet a number of people dislike him.... 😒
@@markofthewolvessucks8930 I suppose everyone has their own opinion but I think he's the best and he makes the Meta Era watchable.

2:33 well he could be saying darn it
In some copies of Sonic Rush Adventure, Marine the Raccoon says "bugger", which more or less means "fuck".

Crap used to be considered swearing but not anymore. A cartoon on Cartoon Network, Adventure Time used it all the time uncensored.

So much for a more family friendly franchise huh? SEGA will always stick to the more "serious" things in games whenever they can imo.
1:15 shadow said that so hrard bro
There is a line in sonic movie 2 where eggman says "piece of shitake!"
7:48 no way! I didn't think they'd say that word. That's not just a sort of offensive word that's just a full on swear word

Really? Wow. American media loves that word for French characters 🤣🤣🤣
Although that does make the chefs song from the little mermaid a bit confusing

I hope they let Shadow swear a little bit in the third Sonic movie. It would be a nice touch given the profanity in his game, especially since I've heard the movie is taking inspo from his game as well as SA2.

Amy also drops a casual "Oh my god" in Sonic Heroes when finding a secret (Though I know many people don't even consider this profanity nowadays).
