I dont know what it is about Korean and Japanese war movies, but their gritty over the top action while still getting the equipment (semi) historically accurate make them so enjoyable to watch
I know right
Asian war movies are just kinda special that way, they’re fun watches. Some Chinese modern war films are closer to American contemporaries though
Ha! Just came here to say the opposite. "Over the top" is exactly the phrase I was going to use, but when the new standard for realism is "Saving Private Ryan" then this kind of schlocky, 80s style, melodrama leaves me flat. Wow, are the death scenes something special, with bodies flying through the air from a grenade blast, or being rocked backward from a .30 cal rifle round. This is how a kid imagines "war".
Edit: Kind of reminds me of the "A-Team" with the ridiculously exaggerated effects. Just need Mr. T to cap it off. _"You ain't nevah gon' reunite the peninsula undah comminizm, fool!"_
Well having to actually reload a gun helps with realism
Agreed.
Imagine if you got caught with a copy of this movie in North Korea.

Wow, they showed how M1 garand shines when you have multiple people rushing towards you but you don't have to touch the charging bolt and can immediately switch target or blind fire into the next blob of enemies. While the enemy with the bolt charging rifle has to stop movement and handle it after firing. It is truly the greatest battle implement.
Especially implementation a second firing line to cover the foremost lines reload to effectively counter the wave tactics. If it were just the first line they would have been overrun halfway through the clip.
@@ryv2484 TBH the portrayal of the reloading of the M1 garand took so long...it only takes about 2 - 3 secs for an experienced soldier and about 5 - 8 secs for non experienced to put the bloc in and slam the bolt forward..
@@cordeliacentauri1737 Given the student soldiers' situation, I just assume the stress of combat alongside not being well trained made it harder for them to reload quickly due to rushing/panicking or that the director wanted the 2nd line firing to be extended to show more before cutting back to the 1st line finishing reloading to not be abrupt.
We did see later on when a student soldier gave himself garand thumb, but quickly reloaded in around 3 seconds so it's hard to really say.
@@ryv2484
That there were Zulu War tactics, just like in the film ZULU, during the last Zulu assault on the outpost of Rorke's Drift.
During the last assault, the British troops lured the Zulu in close and the 3 lines of troops firing in alternate volleys tore them to pieces.
Superbly filmed movie, and very respectful to the courage and motivation to win of both sides.
A bit outdated for the time, the M1 was still a top notch rifle superior to many countries main battle rifle at the time. High rate of fire, a bullet that can stop an elk, relatively easy to reload, easy to use, and even capable of laying down suppressive fire when needed in the right conditions.

@@mheekkim2901Casualty figures are always misleading thanks to movies like this. The majority of casualties sustained in modern warfare comes from indirect fire from artillery, mortars and supporting firepower from airstrikes and tanks and other weapons systems. For context, this is based on a true event in which 71 South Korean student fighters fought at a P'ohang middle school against the 766th North Korean Division for 11 hours.
At the start of the war, South Korea was effectively starved of any proper weapons in sharp contrast to the heavily armed and modernized North Korean army backed by Soviet Russia and China. At the outbreak of the Korean War, they swept through the entire country, squeezing the last remaining South Korean forces at the last stand on the Nakdong River Strait, the very corner of the Korean peninsula. Utterly outgunned, all remaining forces were maneuvered to Nakdong while only 71 volunteer students were stationed at P'ohang, another close by critical point. They had no proper training but yet managed to hold off an entire Division of heavily armed troops for 11 hours. Understandably, very few survived.
And the remaining student soldiers were retired after UN troops arrived. Most returned to school, some joined regular military units, and almost all of them were unaccounted for.

This movie is made by real history about 71 high school students who protect korea from north korean army.
They fought in Pohang Girls' Middle School and back then 1950. Aug. 11th.
This movie is based on a true story. Of course, there were actually several active-duty soldiers involved in that battle.
So the soldiers attacked knowing well fortified position without artillery or smoke barrages? Yea that's the cliche "charge"
They were fighting a bunch of college students with little actual training or experience. They probably thought it would be a cakewalk

@@SyaqilHazeeqHasrilSufiantoPl1 America joined the war, but ROK forces and US forces were continuously losing in the war against North Korea in this time.
So allied forces decided to withdraw to final defensive line, which called 'Nakdong river defense line'.
This battle included in that withdrawal operation, and ROK 3rd Infantry Division's command was in Pohang girl's middle school, but 3rd div. was in Yungduk to defense NK 5th division's offense. The company of 71 student soldiers decided to defense school, and 48 of them killed in action and 23 of them wounded or missed in action.
Thanks to their sacrifice, 20 thousand of civilians could escape from Pohang and allied forces successfully withdraw to Busan.

The letter was written by Lee Woo-geun, a student who was killed in battle
Mother, I killed a man.
It will also be about 10 people with a stone wall in between.
I threw a terrifying explosive weapon called a grenade with four commandos and killed it in an instant.
The grenade binge tore my eardrums apart.
Even at the moment I'm writing this, my ears are filled with a scary roar.
Mother, the enemy's legs fell off and his arms fell off. It was such a harsh death.
Even though it is an enemy, it is frustrating and heavy to think that they are also people and that they are relatives who share blood in the same language.
Mother, why should we go to war?
I think I will calm down if I let my mother know about this complicated and painful feeling.
I think it's scary.
Now, next to me, countless schoolmates are lying on their stomachs in the hot sun, waiting for the enemy to come at them as if they were waiting for death.
The enemy has been silent. You never know when it will come back. There are so many enemy soldiers. There are only 71 of us.
Now I'm scared to think about what's going to happen.
Mom, I can't wait to be held in her arms after the war. Yesterday, I hand-washed my underwear.
I thought of two things while wearing clean, watery underwear.
The innerwear like white jade that your mother washed and the innerwear that I washed.
But I don't know why I came up with a veterinarian while changing clean underwear.
It's a horse that changes to a dead person.
Mother, maybe I'll die today, because I don't think many of those enemies will just walk away.
Mother, it's not that death is scary, but it's scary to think that you can't meet your mother or brothers.
But I'm going to live. I'm going to live.
Mom, I finally feel at ease. Mom, I will definitely live and go back to your side.
I want to eat lettuce wrap. I want to drink cold water to make my teeth ache in the cold Ongdal spring.
Oh! They're coming. I'll write again. Bye, mom! Bye! No, no. I'll write again. Then...
They got the legend Thanos on their side

South korea students vs north Korea
Imagine seeing M1 grand firing in every angle of war
Why the bad army alway use the human wave tactic?
this happened in real life. This wasn't just for the movie. The Chinese and North Koreans would purposely use human waves because they couldn't properly train to equip their guys most of the time. So they'd have them go with assaults to create fire saturation. In this case, with the North Korean, they'd push with tanks first and then send in the human wave to clear buildings. The movie swapped it though, and they sent the people in first. I guess it just looks cooler.
