I’ve been sewing for over 40 years, and this is the first time anyone has actually explained the differences in the needles so well! Thank you so much!
Hi Donna. Thanks for taking the time to check out the video. Glad you found it helpful. Hope to see you back to the channel for more videos in the future.
I ordered a bunch of types of needles that just arrived today and I was needing to look this up, but here it is, right in top of my suggested videos (surveillance through our phones I’m assuming). Thanks for the info!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I am trying to figure out what things beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced sewists need to know but might not have ever known?! Very happy that it informed you well. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know about! 😊
Thank you Carol. Please let me know if there are any subjects I should cover for the RUclips world. Sometimes “you don’t know, what you don’t know”. Thanks for coming back to the channel.
Sorry I was still typing. I just found you about a week ago, I absolutely love your manner and the great information. I have been sewing for 35 years 💕😁
Hi Lynda. I dislike when YT bumps me out mid comment. Anyway, I’m so glad you found the channel and after 35 years I can provide new information for you. Please go through some of the other videos. One thing YT has taught me “you don’t know what you don’t know”. Lol. See you soon! Enjoy.
I just started sewing at 45 years of age. Thank you for taking the time to answer questions we had no idea we had! Excited to continue learning from you, my official Sewing Teacher!
Ther Ian old saying “You don’t know what you don’t know!” And you are, very nicely and clearly, explaining some of those things. I’m very glad I found your channel, and wish you the best.
I have only used a double needle twice but was not aware color indicated space between needles, so that is useful. I love the Superior, Titanium coated Topstitch needles size 90/14. They just seem to work for everything, although I use alot of cotton fabric with multiple layers I have never broken one yet.👍
Hi Fran. Thanks for joining me for this sewing 101 episode about needles. I have not tried that specific needle. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the watch and the recommendation. Have a great week. Hope to see you next Sunday.
Hi, I am new to your channel! Hoping you are doing well. So enjoyed this needle tutorial. I've been selling for 60 years on and off and a lot of this information was new to me. I will watch the rest of the sewing 101 series and I'm sure I still have plenty to learn ❤️
Thank you for this information. I have been sewing for over 50years and have always wondered about the different types of needles that are available. I was tought that the only needle to use is a universal needle, which is what I still used. I'm lucky that I also only use light weight woven fabric for my creations. After watching this video however, I intend to investigate alternative needles and fabrics and have a play with them. Thank you so much for showing me something new at my age. How do I find the chart that you showed in this video, as I think it will aid in my quest for advanced sewing ability. Kind regards Christine. 🙋♀️🇦🇺👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤗🤩🤗
Yay! Thanks for watching Christine. I’m so glad you found my needles 101 informative. I actually made this video at the request of a friend. So many people don’t even realize there are so many types and sizes. Here is the chart I showed at the beginning. Glad I could help. Hope you come back to watch more videos another day! 😀www.euronotions.com/pdf/D-87.pdf
Hi, Amy. Timely topic. My sister-in-law gave me her 12-year-old rarely-used Singer last year. It works fine, made masks ok , but I should change the needle because I don't know when it was last changed. I don't think I realize how lousy the current one is. 😕 Appreciate the needle overview. Helpful. From Cheryl in AZ
Hi Amy. Great video. I have a question regarding the needles that came with my Brother BQ1350. 2-75/11 2/90/11 gold top and 2-90/11 red tip. I know the gold is for stretch but I can't find any info on the red tip. Any help you can provide.
From what I have read, the brother needles that come with your machine are universal needles. Brother uses colour on their needles to indicate size so that they are easier to decider if out of packaging. Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for this very informative needle information! I have printed the guide out to keep handy for a reference. I rarely change my needles due to arthritis in my stubby fingers. Do you have any suggestions that would make it easier to change out the needles? I assume there is a better way and I just don't know it. Thank you again for your wonderful website, God bless!
When my arthritis flares up, I use a pair of unique pliers to pick threads after I’d ripped out a large section of piecing. They pick up thread laying on a hard surface, or help with any tiny detail like holding needles or pulling needles through thick fabric. They are spring loaded, so make quicker work of picking loose thread than fingers, with much less muscle fatigue. We found them at Home Depot but they only come in a set with a pair of cutters. Still, the set is only around $10. I have bought them for family members who can no longer do the pinched finger thing. I have not used them to change my needle, but the second pair could hold the needle and the other one can twist the needle release.
@@yoursewingteacher1729 That is a wonderful suggestion, I have some spring loaded pliers for jewelry making that would probably work just fine. Thank you for the great idea!
Thanks for the info. I've been sewing for a little while and always wondered about how you know what is right. I'm using a singer 201-2 , would that change what needles I use?
Hi Cherry Red. Thanks for joining me on the sewing journey. I bought one of these for my mom years ago. The manual states that singer needles should be used in Singer machines. But at that time there were not Needle manufacturers. A vintage machine can use modern needles like Schmetz and Organ. Modern domestic machines are setup that needles can not be inserted incorrectly, but vintage machines will not. So make sure you are putting the flat part of the needle towards the back of the machine. Please be sure to check out the videos on Sundays. Enjoy!
I save gently used needles in a tomato pincushion which is marked with the common types that I use. This was wonderful until one of my granddaughters decided to remove all of them. 😞 I can’t read the sizes (these precede Schmetz color coding). Any suggestions? I’ve tried my phone on zoom and a magnifying glass
Hello Dale. Oh wow. That’s a little frustrating and a conundrum to solve. My only suggestion would be to use the close up picture of the tip ends to determine type. Wikipedia has a Good photo en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sewing_machine_needle. As for the size, line them up on a solid colour that is easy on the eyes and use a magnifying glass to Suss out which is smaller and which are larger. All I can say is good luck. Thanks for coming to my channel, watching and commenting.
Yeah that’s a hard one to solve. Maybe you could press the top of the needle in a piece of gum and see if needle size would show in the gum. Or cover the top of the needle with some masking tape and run a pencil lead over it to see if the imprint shows through. If you are able to get the size then use schmetz color coding and mark your needle with the same color(s) permanent Sharpie.
Would you recommend store brand or China made needless? How do these and brand needles like Janome compare? When I sew bra’s or wedding attire and ball gowns I only use Schmetz needles. They and Classé needles are wonderful quality.
For home and school garment making, needles from China are fine and much cheaper. They are sized but universal. If I struggle with a specific fabric, I’ll go back to my needle tin and find the appropriate/specialty schmetz or machine brand needle. For Bag making I always make sure to use the appropriate needle (vinyl, leather, denim, etc) and weight; otherwise, I go through too many due to breakage. As to specific surger needles? I use mostly universals. For coverstitch? Must use cover stitch needles in my babylock for my best result😊
