Postum is made very near our house. We have Post, Kellogg, Rolston, and several other food companies in Battle Creek, Michigan. They are extremely careful about how their products are made. One of my Brother's was a grain inspector for the grain coming into the plants and they often rejected entire train loads because the grain did meet their strict requirements. Talk about clean. The food plants are often washed down by people in white suits that cover their whole body and face. They use hoses as big as firehoses that stream hot water, cleaner, and followed by a hot water rinse.

@@deanlollar8241 It's a coffee substitute that was developed during WWII. You can find it online from the Postum site and my local grocery store has it 😀
I remember when I was very young and most of the elderly people I knew drank postum. I lived in a very Mormon town and they couldn’t drink coffee. You are an amazing woman!! I adore you and Matt! Praise God for some goodness in this ugly world❤

I was so surprised to see Postum Cake. I didn’t think that most people knew what Postum was! I am 75 years old & my Grandma use to drink Postum. Our church teaches healthy living because the Bible tells us that our bodies are the temple of God. So, she didn’t drink caffeine. I believe that Postum came out before caffeine free coffee.
I usually drink caffeine free tea & coffee, but now I am thinking I want to get a jar of Postum & try it. And that cake looked scrumptious, so I am going to have to try that recipe especially since you said it has a caramel flavor because I absolutely love caramel!

Growing up as a kid, the neighbor family was Mormon, and they weren’t allowed to drink coffee, so I remember them drinking their Postum every day, and we kids also had some on occasion and it was good. That was 60 plus years ago, but now you’ve got me thinking about it, and I have to make this cake! Thank you, Tipper.

Oh my goodness, that cake looks delicious. I am born and raised in NC and have never heard of it. I’m going to see if my grocery store carries it. If not I’m gonna buy it on Amazon. I’m definitely going to make this cake. Will probably drink some to. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
I just had the thought- that your daughters current viewers, friends, and future grandkids, etc. are so fortunate to have these videos available to them.
Watching my mother cook taught me so much when I was growing up. My mother cooked and baked using old family recipes. Even when I ask her for a recipe, I am not always able to replicate the magnificent product that my mother turned out. Many times, it’s in the details, and unless I’m watching her in action, I miss out on key techniques or changes that make or brake the expected result. Having a cooking video from your mother is so special; Worthy of preservation, and will bring joy now and in the future.
I am so intrigued by Postum now! I just went and bought their original and coffee flavored one to give them a try. I have such. bad tummy issues from fighting cancer this may be a great solution to avoid caffeine. Thank you so much Tipper. Your warm personality really shines in your videos.

I don't think I've ever heard of Postum before, none of my local stores carry it. I sure wish Ingalls would come to where I live. They are also the only place that still carries my favorite pancake mix, Tenda bake maple burst.

My Grandmother, Anna Bell Saunders, would drink Postum and make Postum cake. As you combined the ingredients into the different bowls the memories of her upper arms "flapping" beating the cake batter came to mind and my heart. Thank you.

I always love watching you make recipes because you make sure that you get every last bit of your ingredients out of your bowls, just like I do!😁 I realize that cooking shows are under a time constraints, but come on!, there's still butter, eggs or batter still in that bowl!🤣 I have wonderful memories of baking with my mom and she got every last lick out of that bowl! My kids do the same thing, so I must have passed it down to them. Thanks again Tipper❣️
When I was pregnant I couldn't drink my usual coffe in the morning because that and bacon made me sick..so I found Postum, the coffee substitute. It was wonderful! What a memory this brings back(49 years ago)!! The cake looks wonderful! I would double the frosting recipe! Thanks for sharing!

Mother was introduced to Postum years ago by a Mormon friend of hers, I still enjoy it now and then. The cake looks very good.
That’s so funny because my 72 year old Mother was talking about how she missed Postum a while back, and she lives in Iowa, I’m in South Dakota, and they definitely don’t sell that here, so I went online and found some and sent it to her. My mother had a whisk that looks like yours, her's was bigger. She got it at the five and dime store in 1947! After she passed that was one thing I grabbed before somebody else took it. She used to make me beat egg whites with it for meringue. Sometimes she would make me do it with a fork...whew...took for ever. I told her, or asked why can't we use a hand mixer...she said that is just the way WE do it! As soon as you read the ingredients I knew that cake HAD to be good. YUM!
That looks wonderful I just knew you were going to say to put crushed walnuts on top, I'll sure pass this off to my beautiful bride known as the queen of baking because I'm not the baker although I do most of the cooking this is something she is very good at, thank you for sharing.

Oh, that looks lucscious! I am not surprised it's rich, with the butter and buttermilk, etc.., yum!! So unique, too, who would have known to make a cake with Postum? My Stepdad has been a longtime Postum drinker! Caramel and coffee flavor is a good combo, thanks for sharing!
That looks like a great cake! I was a professional baker for many years, and there are tricks to icing a cake! If you know the tricks, you dont need to be "good"! One big one is you can put a thin layer of icing around the side- doesnt matter what it looks like-- then press roasted, ground nuts or toasted cake crumbs into the sides. IF you're feeling fancy!🤗🍰

Side-note on your deer problem video a few days back: I searched "deer scarecrow" online and turned up several websites with free instructions on making them. (I'd put a link but some creators frown on that.) You might even get a good video out of Matt building one. Hope that helps!

You are right in style with only frosting in between the layers and on top. It's "in" to leave the sides without frosting. It looks great!!

Hi Tipper! So I watched this video this morning and you brought me to tears with your beautiful comments towards the end about the "itty-bitty connections" that we find in our lives. I couldn't agree more. For example, every time I make my Granny's spaghetti sauce recipe the smell of the sauce simmering all day transports me back to her kitchen and the many wonderful times I spent with her. You also mentioned that Appalachians are family centered people and it sure makes me wish that I could have grown up in Appalachia. I'm so glad that I discovered your channel and your blog. I'm 70 years old and never have heard of postum. I love coffee and I'm most definitely going to get me some postum and try this cake, sounds delicious.
Born in 1949 as 5th generation SDA, this is what my parents and grandparents had in place of coffee. And even let us kiddos have some after going out on a cold night especially singing Christ songs. carols. I looked for some a few weeks ago. Found some on Amazon n. But pricey. Brings back Christmas caroling memories. Plus memories of my Grandparents. Special🎄

My favorite cake my mother made, and the one I requested at every birthday, is one that she frosted as you did here. I think the frosting recipe didn't make quite enough to cover the edges, so she adapted as you have. I have fond memories of my mother making that cake on special occasions, and your video took me back there, Tipper. Thank you!

@@rhondabutler4172 Thanks for asking, Rhonda. It was a German Chocolate cake, made from scratch. The center was moist and rich, while the edges were slightly crispy. The icing recipe was an old one, handed down from my grandmother. Mom called it "creamy frosting". I think it was common in the 50s & 60s. As I remember, it was made with a stick of "oleo", some Crisco, sugar, flour, vanilla, and a small amount of scalded milk. If the milk was too hot, it would melt the margarine and ruin the frosting. When I was old enough to try making it myself, I had a few failed attempts. Eventually, I got the hang of it. Years later, when I got married, Cheryl attempted to make the cake for my first birthday together. Guess what? The milk was too hot. When I blew out the candles, the icing went flying off the cake. Poor C, she never lived that down!

I like Postum cookies too. Same thing as old fashion sugar cookies but with a table spoon of postum in the mix. Grammy use to make them all the time back in the day.. I'm going to make this cake tomorrow and see if it tickles my tummy.. Thanks for sharing..

I drank postum as a kid and loved it. It has such a unique flavor. It’s the molasses i think that reminds you of caramel. I would love to make that. I think i would add dollops of whipped cream. 😋😍

Back in the 70's my mom drank Postum when we joined the Mormon church, caffeine was a no no, and Postum didn't have any, we as kids loved sneaking sips here and there, I'm pretty sure she knew we were taking sips, but she let us think we were getting away with something. I loved it and haven't seen it for years, maybe I'll see if I can find some and give it a try 50 years later. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! My house burned down 10.12.21. A year later, still motel surfing. Lost memories. But especially my piano, organ, $30,000 music. But somehow my accordion survived. (Strapless). So many 🎄memories of Christmas 🎄 singing carol in evening 🥶🥶 Back at church fellowship halls. Waiting for us would be Postum and treats. I had just ordered straps for it and had looked for Postum. I have 0 Christmas at 73 and in small motel. I not kidding, I had just ordered accordion straps and Postum Amazon. Looking through comments I saw Walmart delivery also. This was surreal timing. I just started watching your channel in motel room. No oven so I can’t make the cake. (My Grandma’s best friend & cousin went to Battle Creek San to become RNs. My Grandma so wanted to go. But scarlet fever affected her eyes. And she was legally blind. My Mother & one sister became RNs. Her oldest sister became to MOTHER OF MODERN MEDICAL RECORDS. From Mission TX to LLUMC. Myself.LLU as well. But CPA turned to Hospital Administration. Become CEO in 1995. (And played accordion for hospital

I remember now, back in my childhood days in Michigan, that my Grandma had Postum in her pantry. I remember one time when I ran out of Hershey's cocoa to add to my milk, and substituted it with her Ovaltine. Boy did I get a surprise 🫢 It didn't have sugar in it. I remember drinking Postum when I was a child in the late 50's to mid 60's Loved the stuff.
I now drink Pero, since Postum has gotten expensive. I would drink Caro when I was in England and Wales for two years.
Oh wow, I’m sure it is delicious. Postum is a favorite growing up. Grandparents had it. Our church, also uses Pero and Roma for coffee substitutes.
