Ah, stollen is a traditional German Christmas bread. It has been made in the Saxony region of Germany since at least the 15th century. My oma (grandmother) would bake it every Christmas. Delicious!
Thank you 😀
You did a great job, Tipper! Thank you for all your lovely videos and Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family!! 🎄
@@CelebratingAppalachia Yep, it was Oma and Opa too.
❤looks delicious Tipper .
Same here form my grand and her four sisters...travel from home to home Virginia Mountain 🏔️ s
Hey Tipper....I found the original recipe, it was from Oct. 2007 in Good Housekeeping! The lady was Susan Westmoreland, GH Director. You can find anything on the web! LOL
Yay! Thank you! I never even thought about finding it online-thank you!! 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia Your welcome! If you need me to find anything else, just let me know! HA
I immigrated from Germany to the US with my parents in 1960. Stollen is a German fruitcake. I have eaten all my life. Absolutely love it with hot coffee. We generally sprinkled powdered sugar over top of it or a powdered sugar icing. I am tickled that you are making a German recipe!
It is pronounced like first time you said the name at the beginning of this video. 'stol-len'
Thank you Tipper for sharing!
That Stollen fold over represents the Christ Child wrapped in swaddling clothes! It’s often served with a bit of powdered sugar dusted over it. I’m going to try your recipe. I enjoy your shares so much. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
interesting fact that makes it even more a holiday bread 🎄
OXO is a top of the line pastry blend. OXO makes good stuff! Expensive but worth it!
Wow-didn't know that! Thank you Papaw 😀
I have a few of their kitchen items and I believe they are made with large handles etc to help people like me with arthritis.
You need to publish your own cook book. It would be a instant hit. I would buy one.
Thank you! I have a joint cookbook with my dear friend Jim Casada coming out next May 😀
When my mother was first married at age 15, she used an old magazine to save recipes that people gave her. She glued or taped the recipes onto the magazine pages so it became her recipe book. This was around 1951 or so, in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Your stollen looks delicious!
Just up the road a bit....what a resourceful woman.
How smart! Thank you!!
From Atlanta Ks! I ❤️Coffeeville 💕
I made this today. It's in the oven as I write. I substituted orange peel for lemon peel and cranberries for cherries. I can't wait to try it. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
My husband and I love you, Matt, and the girls! I'm going to try your Christmas bread, but also wanted to share a German stollen recipe that I have made for years; my family enjoys it and I hope you will try it. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas from Waco, Texas!
Bread:
1 pkg. (2-1/4 tsp.) dry yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water
2/3 c. milk
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. salt
3-1/4 to 3-1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
3/4 c. slivered almonds, toasted
1 c. golden raisins or dried fruit of choice
1/2 c. halved candied cherries or candied pineapple
Powdered sugar icing:
1-1/2 to 2 c. powdered sugar
2 to 3 drops almond extract
Enough milk, half & half, or cream to make a good drizzling consistency
-- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
-- In a saucepan, scald milk. Add butter and sugar; stir until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Cool to lukewarm.
-- Beat egg and add to the cooled milk mixture, along with the dissolved yeast, almond extract, and salt. Stir in 2 c. flour and beat until smooth. Stir in almonds, raisins/dried fruit of choice, and candied cherries/pineapple. Next, add remaining flour and mix until smooth (I let my KitchenAid stand mixer do the work, lol). Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1-1/2 hours.
-- After dough has risen for 1-1/2 hours, punch down and knead on lightly floured surface. Pat dough into about a 12 inch circle or oval shape on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet. Brush the top with melted butter and let rise 1/2 hour in a warm place.
-- Bake stollen on a lightly greased baking sheet in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until light golden brown.
-- Mix the icing ingredients together and drizzle over the warm stollen (we pronounce it just like "stolen").
Sounds so good! Thank you 😀
I bet your whole house smelled like deliciousness! You and your girl's channel is my new reality TV series! Be blessed. Connor
Thank you Connor!!
Wonderful! Absolutely going to try!
Tip for Tipper: if you roll your cold butter block into the flour, it really helps the butter to thread through the shredder and helps the cleaning process too. 😊
Thank you for that tip 😀
Thank you for some many wonderful videos. Cannot wait to hear the end of the Christmas Barn! God bless and Happy blessed holiday!
The notebook is such a great idea. I think Corie mentioned something like that as a gift. I think she's right. It would make a great gift. And if you happen to find one of those really beautiful notebooks it would just make it even more special. I really love this idea
It would make a great gift 😀
Merry Christmas! Stollen is a German bread. My family makes it every year, and has for generations. I make my own candid peel to put in the stollen. My family makes multi stollen loaves, and then one is saved to have for breakfast Easter morning. My German grandmother told me traditionally the finished stollen is to resemble a baby being wrapped in a blanket. My family soaks the dried fruit in rum or orange juice over night before putting it in the bread. Thanks for sharing your family's version of this bread!
Sounds so good 😀
Thus sounded so familiar, and I realized that I had saved this recipe on Pinterest. The baker's name is Susan Westmorland, and she is the food director from Good Housekeeping magazine. Very yummy. Thank you for reminding me!
Thank you 😀
I’m laughing at Cori. She can’t answer your questions because she’s too busy chewing the bread. 😂💙
😀
quick breads are my thing and I love any excuse to add sour Michigan montmorency cherries to a recipe - can't wait to try this one over the holidays
A wonderful holiday week to you and your whole family, Tipper. I will always associate your channel with the lockdown because that's when I became aware of it. Isn't it nice to move forward from that period with some positive memories, too, and with internet friends that would not have been made had it not been for the forced slowdown of life that the pandemic brought?
Here's to a great 2023 for all your viewers!
Stollen, yes! I didn't experience this in my part of Appalachia, but a relative with German roots used to make a stollen at Christmas, and she'd make a couple and freeze ahead of the season. Very delicious! Oh, and yes... I learned the grated butter hack earlier this year. Who would've thought? :) Perfect. Love your channel.
My grandmother used to make this every year! It was my favorite. She used to call it tea bread. It brought back a lot of good memories to see this video. Thank you so much.
As always, I enjoyed your video so personable love you and your family. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it appreciate it.
Growing up during the 50's, my mother would make Stollen during Christmas time. Our home was heated by radiators which made the room cosy. She would use the lukewarm radiator to rise the dough. Containers of multi colored chopped dried fruit were available to use, and the sugar glaze made it perfect.
Wonderful memories 😀
Sometimes this is the best way to do things in recipes Tipper !!! I have done this a lot for my self in the house !!! It is harder to do the printing or writing with age for me !!! I love these things !!! Have cookbooks like this for the children!!!
My wife's step-dad was an 'old hardheaded German' as a buddy of mine said, and he always made a stollen, with a long 'O' as in something swiped or run off with. It was right good but I remember years ago that I helped my mom make fruit cakes. I got to mix stuff and pick out nut meats out of shells and clean the bowls which was the best part. Then actually got to eat some after they were done. That is some good eating so get some for me with some black coffee that you have to strain the beans out with your teeth. My A1C frowns on the treats. Thanks again and God Bless Yall!
Thank you! Love those memories 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia Stuff bubbles up now and again. If it's not to goofy I'll let yall in on it. It's all true because I'm not smart or crooked enough to make it up. Not like the politicians that're so crooked they'll have to be screwed into the ground when they die.
Tipper Merry Christmas to you an Matt Corey and Katie may your Christmas be special and blessed
Merry Christmas 😀
I remember having stollen (pronounced just like "stolen" in English, as other commenters have said, or "shtolen" in German) a few times when I was younger. My dad preferred a similar Czech bread, vanocka, which is pronounced VONN-ootch-ka, the "ootch" as in "foot", as opposed to "boot".
Stollen is pronounced "stolen". German in origin dating back to the 14th century. It's normally a yeasted dough. The fold of the dough is made to represent the humps of the camels the wise men rode to deliver gifts to the Christ child. the fruit in the bread represents jewels and the fragrant citrus and spices I think are to represent frankincense. Everything in it symbolic of Christmas. I have made the yeasted type. it is a delicious bread no matter how you make it. Cheers, tipper, and a blessed christmas to you all.
Howdy sophie morrison. Your history lesson for stollen is very interesting. Thank you for sharing with us. I appreciate the information. Have a Merry Christmas and be blessed.
That would be good to use for Biscotti. You would just slice then outback in until hard. You can then dip in coffee, tea or hot chocolate! A very Italian treat…thanks Tipper.
Sounds great!
I have my German grandmothers stollen (klaben) recipe. She soaked her fruit in brandy (for a few hours or day before). Poured the whole mix into the dough. It gave the stollen its unique flavor I remember so well at her table. Thanks for sharing Tipper- Merry Christmas 🎄
I make these every year for Christmas, Love them.
Tipper, you are the best. It is 'stole' en', I wish you were my neighbor, we would enjoy conversations about food, gardening...I don't have the booklet, but do have a small file cabinet full of recipes saved over 57 years. I love finding the old ones and bringing back wonderful memories of people I've known and places I've lived and times we have enjoyed each morsel.
Merry Christmas to You, Matt, Granny & the Girls ❣️
Merry Christmas 😀
I love lemon so this is one I'd love to try. I'm also one who has to have my coffee fix so as you were tasting it my first thought was how good it would be with coffee. I can't imagine how you manage the time to make these videos during Christmas week but I'm so glad you do. Watching your videos is one of the last things I do every night before going to bed.
So glad to see this. We have a German bakery that I used to buy this from when he was starting out, having his van as the retail outlet for his home-based bakery. I pre-ordered this loaf for years but it finally became too pricey because of the popularity. I saw that this year he’s at $26 a loaf. But I do love it and believe I’ll give yours a try.
It is pronounced stole-in I had stollen once and it is shaped pretty much as you shaped it. I didn’t understand the directions on shaping it either. I enjoyed this very much. My husband’s family are Italian and they introduced me to panettone, which is a yeasted sweet bread made with candied orange peel, and raisins. We toast it and have it with butter it smells divine.
Yum that bread sounds good! Thank you 😀
Oh this recipe looks scrumptious. I love the crunchy sound when you cut it. You and Corey look so much alike. Beautiful ladies. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤️
Tipper, this is another gem from your treasure trove of recipes. You have all my recipes and my mothers and some of my grandmothers. My dad was a good cook and he liked to cook, as well.

Great tip 😀
Merry Christmas Appalachia Love you guys!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe. My mouth is watering!
Corie, the clap and "That's a wrap" scared the crud out me at the end, so thanks for that. 🤣😛
😀
My family ancestry is German and English, I make stollen with a similar recipe, very German, no lemon, and heavily dusted with 10X sugar as soon as it comes out of the oven. It is a delightful Christmas treat!
Looks delicious!

Sounds great I think I might have to try making it!
Looks good! I’ll have to make it sometime. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this Tipper. It's so approachable to make. I can't wait to give it a try. 🤗🤗
Merry Christmas to all the Pressleys and family. Wishing you a blessed season filled with love. The stollen looks so good & not that difficult to make. When my children were still at home I would make cinnamon raisin bread pudding for Christmas breakfast. I would put it together the night before & into the oven first thing in the morning. That also allowed me the time to get our dinner (2pm)started & put together. Now that it's just me I think this bread may be the perfect deal. Thank you
Tipper, thank you so much. This looks delightful!
You are so welcome! 😀
Looks so good🎄

Looks perfect to me! Make a note on your recipe for the salt right now for next year! Merry Christmas🎄 🎄!!
I think you would like the poplar Italian bread enjoyed at Christmas,"Panatone" (large bread), a leavened sweet bread with candied orange peel and raisins. so good!
Sounds wonderful 😀
Another great recipe! Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it 😀
