I grew up poor as a kid. We lived in a camper for a while. My mom struggled with crippling and destructive alcoholism. My dad escaped his alcohol addiction and shielded me from it. When my mom died he raised me as a single dad. I went in the military, did well, and now im going to college. His story made me cry.

“You know me, I always land on my feet”....sent me into tears. My mother said it to me at a time when I needed help. Her words were “don’t worry, you always land on your feet”. I am from the south and Mr. Howard, you did your homework on this one. You are so talented and respected in your field. This is so Oscar worthy and I have recommended this movie to everyone just for the emotion. My son was the first in our family to ever finish college. My entire life has been a struggle, but he’s the one thing I did right. I can remember when he was 6 years old and me having $7.00 for groceries for 2 weeks just to feed him. I never received state assistance and never had help from my very dysfunctional alcoholic parents. My son never got a free meal at school and somehow i managed to do it. He is a fine man today with two beautiful children of his own. We don’t get to choose how or where we come into this world. We either survive it or thrive. Brilliant work depicting the sacrifices many in my generation have made for their children and the love that is there in spite of it all. So well done!!

how often did you find yourself with less than $10.00 for the week? how did you manage? did you go to food banks, soup kitchens, food miraculously appearing on your doorstep? Did you work at a restaurant or grocery where you could bring home unsold items or did you eat from the dumpster?

Secondly, I am a naturalized American, and like many immigrants from former Soviet Union, I love this country and I want it to do well! Most of all, I love people like you, regular, good people, not the elites who are destroying the country and probably don’t even realize it (The ones that do, are the most evil ones)… God bless you, and God bless the USA!

My grandpa said that to me at a time when I just needed a hug and some real fatherly advice. I loved him, but I hated him for refusing to give more. Now that I’m older I understand that he was a hard, distant man because he lived through a truly terrible childhood in the 1930’s. I know now that he did the very best that he could with what he had. Somehow he knew that I would find my way, and I did, but I really wanted that hug. Still do.

Hillbilly Elegy was on my "buy and read list. But the movie came out. I was trained in the military by a hillbilly who told me he enlisted at 17 because he wasn't going to work in the coal mines. He told me to go to the education center and take college classes if I wanted to get out of the service and stay out of mediocrity in civilian life. Or if I wanted to stay in I could reenlist for Officers Candidate School (OCS) and get paid triple for doing the same job we were doing. I listened to him and I got out with the AA degree needed to qualify for OCS, finished my BA, got a civil service job, doing what I do. And retired at 51 with a 6 figure income. I have said that the military is populated with "Hillbillies and Homeboys" My partner was the Hillbilly, I was the Homeboy, straight out of Brooklyn.

Critics don't understand the true life characters that make up the rural, Midwest, Southern stories--except for the unexpected in Deliverance. Writers write what they know (big city stories, action, romance, tech world stuff, etc.)...When they don't understand the dynamic of a locale and its inhabitants, they fault the dynamic, not what it is they don't understand about it. I've lived in the Midwest and the South, among other places. Just seeing the trailer, the look they gave Glenn Close nailed it on the head.

    • @ylangylang268
      @ylangylang268 4 года назад +9

Yes many of us have highly dysfunctional and toxic families. While i agree that those are the families we are born into, i disagree that we have to stay within those family dynamics all our lives. Many times we need to leave and find our own "families" in order to live a sane and healthy peaceful life, especially when there is emotional neglect and any sort of abuse within those families. Also just because it's a story from a family in the Midwest doesn't mean that it doesn't exist everywhere, within many families, because it does. I viewed the trailer and i was in tears so idk that i'll watch the movie. As a Childhood Emotional Neglect survivor, it really triggered me.

I loved Amy Adams in Sharp Objects on HBO, which is also based on a book set in urban Missouri farming town. The book, Hillbilly Elegy is a good depiction of what I saw, living in Southern OH for a few years with my husband's family. The rural small towns are just set back in a time of the past. Other than those two years I have always lived in CAlifornia. People in coastal cities and urban centers, seem to want to forget middle America, but middle America is where things are made, manufactured and much of our food is farmed there as well, and Coastal elites and cities/ urban centers always look down their noses as this population as backwards, and don't understand the vital work they do to keep our country running. But not only that there has been decline in those areas as well as their jobs were shipped overseas, the population turned to alcoholism and opiods. I have seen that on visits back there as family as well. Even though I lived most of my life in CA, my ancestral roots are also from the Midwest.

I'm from middletown ohio and can totally relate to what JD went through. My background was almost identical to his. My family, both sides, came from Kentucky. Super poor. Went to middletown looking for work and many ended up working at Armco Steel.

For someone from California, you understand Appalachia in the 90s awfully well.
Had no idea that was Glenn Close until after the move (I like to watch and then find out about a movie). She was, well, Glenn Close good.

There are lots jumping on the book - people criticizing it for being hateful of the working class communities.
      It’s ridiculous.
I just hope the actors and producers can continue to stand by their work and this story and have integrity.

Such a great movie. Don’t listen to the haters Netflix. Most everything you produce is left-leaning, I could use a little more balance in general as a side note. But this was not a political film, just a drama about a family. Great work!

Ron, you made a great film. The actors were superb. And I fear none of you will ever get the respect you deserve for it from Hollywood. But as you can see from the comments, the movie touched a great many people and that's way more important than awards and statues to put on a shelf.

Just watched in spite of a major network stating that the ending was "pretty tough," plus, I trust movies by Ron Howard. They are challenging, multi-layered, and highly crafted for authenticity. The underlying theme of redemption struck me especially as Easter season is upon us. The grandmother's sacrifice of food, money, and health care for her grandson was the most moving part to me. She saw in him what he could not see in himself. Super acting - it doesn't matter what Hollywood thinks. This movie will be one of those stories people tell others, watch many times, and see new levels of mercy each time.

I grew up in Bradford, PA, a played out oil town whose small industrial base disappeared in the 1970s. I lived in the lower economic strata and knew what it was like to eat government surplus food before the advent of food stamps. I remember people like those in JD Vance's book. Plenty of alcoholism and domestic violence.

Oscar worthy Glenn Close and Amy Adams Oscars, Oscars, JD Vance for being able to tell his story that so many can relate too. Ron Howard for bringing the essence of real life to the screen without demeaning anyone and yet so many can relate on so many levels the struggles because no matter where you are from you have to make choices and these choices come with consequences and depending on your moral compass and past experiences you will make judgment calls to others that they may not understand and that’s okay ✅ I have 10 grandchildren and one of the first thing I taught them is how to set a table and using cloth napkins and not paper....I loved this Thank you 😊

This movie needs to be shown in our public schools. Because of human trafficking (slavery) the movie TAKEN should be shown in public schools also. We can't keep putting our heads in the sand. The media does a great job of dividing us. We have created so many special people nowadays that no one is the same, so much for equality.
