Yes, I wish she had gotten the film role in Doubt. I knew they were never going give the role to its originator, Cherry Jones, so I hoped it would be Glenn Close. She was so much better for that role than Meryl Streep.

The Oscars are industry awards. The reason they're revered as much is because each category is voted on by people within the respective profession. Actors vote for the acting award, makeup artists for makeup awards, sound designers for sound design, etc. It's about being recognized by your peers, mentors, and idols.
Had the pleasure to see Amy Adams in Tennessee William's play "The glass menagerie" in London last year. Such a fine actress, movies, tv, theatre, she does it all with class. A shame to give her so many nods and no wins. Mrs Close is just an Icon. Nothing further to add.
I also saw her in London in this play, my first attendance at the theater since Covid. She was so sweet because she signed our programs afterwards in the rain, and it was very lovely to meet her.

Also with regards to Glenn: The tragedy isn't simply that she hasn't won an Oscar, but that there were so many nominations where she could have (and in some cases, arguably should have) won. Sadly they keep passing over her for someone else. 😕
I swear there are people in the Academy who hate Glenn. This woman is so talented she should have not one but multiple Oscars in her mantle. She should be a triple crown and EGOT (she's been nominated for Grammys before but hasn't won one of those yet either). They'll nominate her but refuse to give her the award. 😢
She should have won for The Wife. I think it’s far more difficult to give a subtle and compelling performance like she did then Olivia Coleman’s one. They should give Glenn an honorary.

I just didn’t really think her performance should have overshadowed the subtle, nuanced, but strong performance by Glenn that took a movie that could have been boring and made it so compelling. I agree. That being said, I'm torn because I do actually like that Cher won. I think Fatal Attraction was too heavy to take Glenn (and her character) over the finish line. I would have been thrilled if Glenn had won for Dangerous Liasons. Devastating performance.....the final scene is absolutely crushing.
I tried to watch it when i didn't know anything about it, and i shut it off after about 10 minutes. I think Howard, Adams, and Close were duped into making propaganda because JD's truth was unknown. But make no mistake that's what this is: a heroic (fictional) origin story of a real life politician is by definition propaganda, and Knowing what they know now i doubt any of them would want their Oscar tied to THIS project
They all made a decision to squander their hard-earned Hollywood capital on a vile and bilious political screed so transparent in its motivations that it's hard for me to believe anybody could fail to recognize it as such. I assume they all have capable people on staff who are responsible for vetting scripts (and who all failed in their responsibility where Hillbilly Elegy is concerned)... but they ultimately also bear responsibility for the projects they choose to undertake. As you say, it doesn't take much to understand exactly what is going on with Hillbilly Elegy. It's physically, psychically, and spiritually painful to read.
@nathanphart He did. People have come forward to credibly contest the ways they've been depicted, not that such a thing is really necessary to discredit his account. The "memoir" basically just appeals to classist misconceptions people already hold about folks from Appalachia. That more people weren't reflexively disgusted by the book indicates just how deep these misconceptions run.

@@ssaberwolf J.D. was raised in Ohio, it is not, I repeat NOT part of "Appalachia".....so that was truly a farce.... but, now I might add that the drug problems of real Appalachia and surrounding areas such as KY, Ohio, etc., are very real, and many have died from them. MY stepdaughter for one. She died at 34 years of age, and we tried to help her. She wanted help and tried for a while, but the pull of the high from opiods was too strong.... the movie was very relatable... and is to so many, whether here in the Appalachians, or anywhere else in the US or world. J.D. was not a Republican at the time of the movie. He was staunchly against Trump then, but politics was not a factor in this movie...so why make it one now? It is about a family with problems, as so many all over the world do have.
I was raised in Ohio, and my mother was raised in southeast Ohio...the area shown in the film. When i watched it, i found it close to real life...and while watching Glenn Close, i said to myself, OMG that's my mom and grandma she's portraying in the way she spoke and acted. She had my mom and grandma's way of speaking and acting down pat. There is a certain way people from this area speak...for instance the word fish is pronounced feesh, wash is pronounced worsh, etc. Those from outside that area love to make fun of them for the way they think and speak, but it is the way they are and portraying them is also bound to provoke criticism and derision. I fault Howard, not the actors for the film's failures.
It’s in Southwest Ohio but obviously is pretty similar to the area you grew up. I thought Glenn was great too and would have been a worthy Oscar winner. Let’s be honest and say the film’s source material being written about Trump Country was probably a tough pill for some liberal voters to swallow. The film’s time jumps also did it no favors nor did J.D’s elitist attitudes towards his family in the film.
Same the only thing that did it for me was the nostalgia summers. But it’s true when I read the book it’s so terribly written there is no writing style so to speak of and like he said it is about glorifying his struggle not just portraying it almost as if it to pain himself in the end as this hero figure who overcame everything through just will power when reality doesn’t work like that and his attempt with his memoir was to subsume reality underneath his personal narrative which doesn’t make for a good story overall

Ohio is Ohio, but I must say, a lot of families from the Appalachians migrated to Ohio, and Maryland to find jobs, as there were none here, and still aren't much, only the mines. So, Ohio is made up of a lot of us. My uncles left to go there, but my dad stayed and worked in the coal mines most of his life.
F the Oscars! Winning one would be a step down for Close. Hitchcock never won, not winning should be seen as a badge of honor for any accomplished artist
Let’s never forget: she is a 3-time Tony and 3-time Emmy WINNER, with 3 Grammy nominations to add to the mix. And she is loved and respected by everyone + can say her work was chosen among the best 8 times at the Oscars. Now that’s victory in my eyes!
I am a fan of Glenn Close. Both Glenn and Michelle were luminous in Dangerous Liasons. I was surprised that she didn't win. I watched Hillbilly Elegy and enjoyed it immensely. She disappeared in that character. (Shoulder shrug)
I have a feeling this movie had the same problem “Unplanned” did-hired attractive actors for unattractive real life people. It also feels like a bit of a circus act pretending Vance is a true Appalachian.
Thank you for recognizing Amy Adams deserved to be nominated for Arrival. The way the Academy ignores basically all sci-fi and horror film is so frustrating.
I am from Southeast Tennesse, with family and genealogy spanning TN, GA, NC, AL...basically known a bunch of people from Ohio even though my people aren't really from there, however, def from the hillbilly land. Plenty of my family members (as I'm sure in other families) past and present have struggled with addiction, depression, anger, abuse, etc., and baby ain't nobody got money I mean not really. We were especially poor growing up. I was a very protected and sheltered child who grew up in a kind, loving family, much like the boy in this story. But I did see things and I have always sought better and wanted more. What I loved so much about this movie is recognizing moments, characters, scenarios...it was very real life. That lady wrote an article "not my Appalachia" ... well okay hon, it ain't for you. No film in recent history that's faced such negativity have I gotten so angry about. Yes, these areas are very conservative and problematic... tell my very liberal a** about it, I LIVE here and am related to a bunch. That wasn't what this story was about. I don't know much about the real J.D. Vance and the little I do makes me not care terribly about finding out more. Nor have I read his memoir or prob ever will. But a whole bunch of folks saying he made clichéd characters to serve the stories purpose of portraying mostly negative obstacles he faced in his life growing up where and how he did. But here I am, recognizing these people, witnessing some of these exact moments in my life. I don't know that man or the people whom he wrote directly about, but somehow, I know these characters in this film based on what he wrote. So I find it very hard to believe he just made them up or exaggerated them for the sake of his story. Seems to me he grew up with people very similar to some I grew up with. A movie isn't necessarily bad because it wasn't made or was unrelatable to you. That's what made me so mad about all the negative reviews. And screw the Razzies for that Glenn Close nom! I've been waiting on you to post this particular fiasco (it definitely was an Oscar fiasco) video since you mentioned it in another, but I'm so glad you weren't too harsh on it!

Glenn robbed of Oscar for “Fatal Attraction”. Cher was good in “Moonstruck” but nothing that deserved that statuette. Close is also amazing in “Dangerous Liaisons”. Chilling characterization in that movie.
I will say this, after watching Susan Lucci lose the daytime Emmy for 18 years before winning, I think the lesson is to not give up hope. Glenn or Amy could easily win an Oscar someday!
I believe that Hillbilly Elegy didn’t do well due to the controversy since the movie depicted of the people who live in Appalachia region in a negative light. Politics was also a reason why it didn’t do well since the author is from the right and he is now a US Senate from Ohio. This is some of the reasons why in my opinion. I know they are other reasons.
It’s not just that. Vance is completely full of shit and wrote a poverty porn book, and his whole solution to the problem of poverty in Appalachia after being there very briefly was, “take away all support mechanisms,” essentially going with the good ol’ physics-defying pull yourself up by your own bootstraps canard. As somebody who grew up in the same region of Kentucky that Vance visited and has lived the past 14 1/2 years in Cincinnati and is now stuck with this idiot as a Senator, I cannot express how much disdain I have for Vance.

I wouldn't call it an complete flop at the Oscars it did get nominated for two Oscars and Glenn Close has an slim chance at winning Best supporting actress at the Oscars. He called it that because his family roots are in Appalachia. I am one of his distant kin, as well as many here. lol He has lots of kin here, and probably doesn't even know it, he might have thought of it at one time or another, maybe. My great great grandfather is Jim Vance, and no, he wasn't bad, as they portray in movies. He was a Sheriff, a peacekeeper. J.D. is a descendant of our family here in southern WV, and KY. That is why he called it "Hillbilly Elegy".
Hillbilly Elegy was a disgusting book in so many ways. Why anybody thought it would be a good idea to try to transform it into an Oscar-friendly movie in the first place is utterly beyond me... and frankly, I lost respect for every single person who decided to lend their talents to the project of legitimizing and elevating that so-called "true story" by translating it to the big screen.
Let’s be honest.. this is entirely a politically charged comment and has nothing to do with the quality of the book.. the vast majority of readers disagrees with your assessment for a reason.. Your disdain for the book, is entirely because you disagree with JD Vance’s politics.. This is irrefutably clear, especially with the comment that implies that the story might not true.. Literally any research into Vance’s past supports that it is true, and there’s just not a single legitimate reason to think any part of the story is falsified.. the only reason anyone would claim anything in the book was fabricated, is out of political dislike toward Vance, and not wanting to accept that he had to overcome the odds to get where he is. The underdog narrative is too positive, so you baselessly decide it isn’t true.
I believe the last performance nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie was Amy Irving for Yentl and lost both but that is something - it shows you how divisive a performance can be. As much as I love Cher and her win for Moonstruck which I love too - I feel Close should have won for Fatal Attraction
It was an ok movie. Definitely not the worst movie ever made. Everybody keeps commenting on the wokeness being the reason it didn’t get Oscar love. I didn’t notice any political messages in the movie but understood once Vance announced his Ohio Senate campaign and then realized….Ah, that’s why he wrote the book that became a movie. Now, everyone realizes there were political motivations to the story and sees it much differently now. I know I do.

When are people going to realize that Oscars are not about the performances but more about politics. If it were for example Samuel L. Jackson should have won several by now. It's why I don't care about these awards. They mean very little.

In my book, he isn't a loser. There are many families in this country who have these same struggles, and many people don't get out of it. They just perpetuate the distinction, because it's hard to break the cycle. It IS a true story, and that he was able to work hard, and change everything for his family makes him a winner! It's sad that people only see everything through a political lens.
This movie was EXTREMELY authentic. I grew up with people just like Close's & Adams' characters. Seemed it was dismissed because it was the type of story Hollywood was no longer interested in propping up. The icy critical reception showed their lack of even TRYING to understand a lifestyle & people they just don't care about.

I hate the idea of someone being owed or due an award because of all the past nominations. If they were never the best in a given year then they never deserved it. Each year should be determined based on that years performances only, otherwise more worthy people may lose.

If only this film adaptation of the musical version of "Sunset Boulevard" would get made after being talked about for so long! Although Glenn Close at 76 might not be able to sing it as well as she once did (and there were many Broadway lovers who were not a fan of her singing voice...I thought she sounded great on the cast recording!).

It's *based* on a true story...it's a dramatization of true events chronicled in Vance's memoir. The film rearranges events in the book, has tonal inconsistencies, and melodramatic acting. One criticism I've heard is the film is washed of any of the political discussion Vance touted. The film is more like "poverty porn." The movie doesn't try to explore the Appalachian subculture in an a relatable or authentic manner, rather it focuses on the traumatic experiences of an individual and dismissively gives him a happy ending.
Imagine how bad a movie is when Glenn Close and Amy Adams of all actors are undeserving of nominations for their performances damn. But I agree, with the amount of work they do they're bound to get those gold trophies someday. I don't think Glenn Close will be O'Toole'd.

There is no Ron Howard movie on earth deserving of an Oscar (yes, even Apollo 13). I don’t care if you use eldritch magic to bring Laurence Olivier himself back from the nether realm to star in it. He is the ultimate “American-as-Apple-Pie” filmmaker as long as your idea of apple pie is the factory-made stuff that’s loaded up with corn syrup and sold for $5.99 at Sam’s Club. Homie makes Zemeckis look like Kubrick.
While I didn’t like Hillbilly Elegy, Glenn Close was excellent. I didn’t realize that she was playing the part until I heard it was her after I saw the movie.
This film just felt small to me. Despite being elevated by two film luminaries, a great director and an Oscar-bait premise, it should have ensured success but it came out inert and cliched. My least liked performance by Close -and that's saying a lot. I've never found her less than watchable in any of her screen work but here she was unconvincing, borderline campy and predictable.
I'm on a spree of Amy Adams films for a month now. So far I have seen everything after Junebug. But this one I will skip for a while. I don't want to feel any sympathy for this guy.

Greta Garbo never won an Academy Award for a single performance. An Honorary Academy Award was given to Garbo in 1954 for her unforgettable screen performances. Garbo in future years will probably be the only Actress remembered from the Golden Age of Hollywood or even after. And that includes Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Lillian Gish and Joan Crawford.
Glenn should have gotten an Oscar long ago, but I found it irritating at the time so many people online EXPECTED her to win, because she was "due". Best Actress is an award for acting, not longevity. There's no question in my mind Olivia deserved to win that year.

Excellent retrospective, Brian! I actually enjoyed both of Glenn and Amy's performances in the movie but I did not like anything else about the movie. This film was rightfully better best forgotten. By the way, kudos on using that Glenn clip perfectly during the Oscar to Razzie nomination section 😂 Glenn and Amy will hopefully finally get their Oscar wins with great performances and we will all cheer 🎉 And I adored Youn's win for Minari in 2021, the heart and soul of the movie other than Alan Kim ❤
It was a mediocre film. I’d rather Close either win for a performance she deserves or not win one at all. I hate the sympathy Oscar. That cheats someone else who could be in Close’s situation in the future.
As much as I dislike JD Vance, I have to admit Hillbilly Elegy was a surprisingly good film, much better than I had heard. That Glen Close was nominated for a Razzie is ridiculous. She was really good in the film, probably the best thing about the film.

"Hillbilly Elegy" wasn't a great movie. I think you highlighted exactly why it failed as much as it did qualitatively. However, I think Glenn Close's performance was the best thing about the movie, and she certainly did not deserve the Razzie nomination.
I enjoyed the movie and thought all performances, especially Glenn Close and Amy Adams’, were excellent and deserving of nominations and wins. I think you very cleverly alluded to the real reason for the failure of the film at the Academy Awards: politics. The critics killed it because they, and Hollywood powerful, don’t agree with J.D. Vance’s political beliefs. I doubt any of them come from such an impoverished, disfunctional family background so their sneering shows them for the biased frauds they are. Evidence: The disconnnect between critics rotten tomatoes scores and audience scores for many movies during the last year or so demonstrates many critics are just Hollywood shillls. They praise many movies because it pushes the approved agenda and the movie going public either stay away or, if they go, give it a poor score. Going to the movies is a costly outing nowadays and, quite frankly, this movie buff is unwilling to spend money unless I think the movie is going to be value for money. I no longer trust most main stream media critics and look for movies to go and see by watching critical commentary presented by independent commentators like you dear sir. Thank you. I hope your independent commentary is amply rewarded and you prosper in 2024. P.s. Hollywood seems to forget there are approximately 100 years of wonderful movies available on DVD or streaming so we movie lovers aren’t dependent on the latest offering at the local cinema.
If nothing else, Glenn Close will most definitely get a career Oscar someday. No question. Not sure about Adams. I agree she should've been nominated and won for Arrival. Sometimes winning an Oscar can be a kiss of death to a career. Many actors win and then are rarely heard from again, or they rarely if ever get nominated again afterwards. It can be a "be careful for what you wish for" thing.
Actually, Brian, I think this is an excellent assessment of the film and nominations or lack thereof. The book was lovingly embraced by the Northeastern media and intelligentsia because it validated all of their prejudices. The very title of the book is derogatory and that told you that Vance wasn’t even from Appalachia. People from the region didn’t deny the problems there but disliked Vance’s dismissive attitude to be self-aggrandizing. It was a xenophobic and ignorant book embraced by xenophobic and ignorant people. That’s why I was so surprised that Ron Howard of all people wanted to make a movie out of it. The material was unrelatable to everyone, especially in Appalachia. Glenn Close is good in her part and she makes the most of a quirky, likable character very much against her type but nothing could have breathed life into this project. And now, with new political developments, I wonder if Howard and the rest are seeing the folly of their trusting the material of a denounced book.

I remember going through depression, when I saw this movie during the Pandemic, seeing Hillbilly Elegy was like a sort of therapy to me in those moments. I apologize if i get emotional, but the movie took me back to the times my dad and I spent together before he died of diabetes. Actually, Amy Adams's heartbreaking performance reminded me of my mom when she knew my dad passed away at the hospital

Glenn Close looked ridiculous as that character. It’s not a surprise that she got a Razzie nom. As a casual viewer, Close and Hillbilly Elegy as a whole came off as desperate for awards. Context is important too. There was no way a film like that would’ve won right after January 2021, given the political climate. As far as Close being “overdue”, I don’t like the idea of actors “deserving” Oscars. It should go to the “best” of the year (or the one who “plays the game” the best). Close, while obviously very talented in many, MANY films, just has never been the best of that year. Sadly, she has rotten Oscar luck.

The Oscars are industry awards. The reason they're revered as much is because each category is voted on by people within the respective profession. Actors vote for the acting award, makeup artists for makeup awards, sound designers for sound design, etc. It's about being recognized by your peers, mentors, and idols.

Had the pleasure to see Amy Adams in Tennessee William's play "The glass menagerie" in London last year.
Such a fine actress, movies, tv, theatre, she does it all with class.

Also with regards to Glenn: The tragedy isn't simply that she hasn't won an Oscar, but that there were so many nominations where she could have (and in some cases, arguably should have) won. Sadly they keep passing over her for someone else. 😕

I agree. That being said, I'm torn because I do actually like that Cher won. I think Fatal Attraction was too heavy to take Glenn (and her character) over the finish line. I would have been thrilled if Glenn had won for Dangerous Liasons. Devastating performance.....the final scene is absolutely crushing.

I tried to watch it when i didn't know anything about it, and i shut it off after about 10 minutes. I think Howard, Adams, and Close were duped into making propaganda because JD's truth was unknown. But make no mistake that's what this is: a heroic (fictional) origin story of a real life politician is by definition propaganda, and Knowing what they know now i doubt any of them would want their Oscar tied to THIS project
I feel like JD Vance made up most of the material to advance his political career.
They all made a decision to squander their hard-earned Hollywood capital on a vile and bilious political screed so transparent in its motivations that it's hard for me to believe anybody could fail to recognize it as such. I assume they all have capable people on staff who are responsible for vetting scripts (and who all failed in their responsibility where Hillbilly Elegy is concerned)... but they ultimately also bear responsibility for the projects they choose to undertake. As you say, it doesn't take much to understand exactly what is going on with Hillbilly Elegy. It's physically, psychically, and spiritually painful to read.

@@ssaberwolf J.D. was raised in Ohio, it is not, I repeat NOT part of "Appalachia".....so that was truly a farce.... but, now I might add that the drug problems of real Appalachia and surrounding areas such as KY, Ohio, etc., are very real, and many have died from them. MY stepdaughter for one. She died at 34 years of age, and we tried to help her. She wanted help and tried for a while, but the pull of the high from opiods was too strong.... the movie was very relatable... and is to so many, whether here in the Appalachians, or anywhere else in the US or world. J.D. was not a Republican at the time of the movie. He was staunchly against Trump then, but politics was not a factor in this movie...so why make it one now? It is about a family with problems, as so many all over the world do have.
I was raised in Ohio, and my mother was raised in southeast Ohio...the area shown in the film. When i watched it, i found it close to real life...and while watching Glenn Close, i said to myself, OMG that's my mom and grandma she's portraying in the way she spoke and acted. She had my mom and grandma's way of speaking and acting down pat. There is a certain way people from this area speak...for instance the word fish is pronounced feesh, wash is pronounced worsh, etc. Those from outside that area love to make fun of them for the way they think and speak, but it is the way they are and portraying them is also bound to provoke criticism and derision. I fault Howard, not the actors for the film's failures.
It’s in Southwest Ohio but obviously is pretty similar to the area you grew up. I thought Glenn was great too and would have been a worthy Oscar winner.
Let’s be honest and say the film’s source material being written about Trump Country was probably a tough pill for some liberal voters to swallow. The film’s time jumps also did it no favors nor did J.D’s elitist attitudes towards his family in the film.

Same the only thing that did it for me was the nostalgia summers. But it’s true when I read the book it’s so terribly written there is no writing style so to speak of and like he said it is about glorifying his struggle not just portraying it almost as if it to pain himself in the end as this hero figure who overcame everything through just will power when reality doesn’t work like that and his attempt with his memoir was to subsume reality underneath his personal narrative which doesn’t make for a good story overall

Ohio is Ohio, but I must say, a lot of families from the Appalachians migrated to Ohio, and Maryland to find jobs, as there were none here, and still aren't much, only the mines. So, Ohio is made up of a lot of us. My uncles left to go there, but my dad stayed and worked in the coal mines most of his life.

Thank you for recognizing Amy Adams deserved to be nominated for Arrival. The way the Academy ignores basically all sci-fi and horror film is so frustrating.
I am from Southeast Tennesse, with family and genealogy spanning TN, GA, NC, AL...basically known a bunch of people from Ohio even though my people aren't really from there, however, def from the hillbilly land. Plenty of my family members (as I'm sure in other families) past and present have struggled with addiction, depression, anger, abuse, etc., and baby ain't nobody got money I mean not really. We were especially poor growing up. I was a very protected and sheltered child who grew up in a kind, loving family, much like the boy in this story. But I did see things and I have always sought better and wanted more. What I loved so much about this movie is recognizing moments, characters, scenarios...it was very real life. That lady wrote an article "not my Appalachia" ... well okay hon, it ain't for you. No film in recent history that's faced such negativity have I gotten so angry about. Yes, these areas are very conservative and problematic... tell my very liberal a** about it, I LIVE here and am related to a bunch. That wasn't what this story was about. I don't know much about the real J.D. Vance and the little I do makes me not care terribly about finding out more. Nor have I read his memoir or prob ever will. But a whole bunch of folks saying he made clichéd characters to serve the stories purpose of portraying mostly negative obstacles he faced in his life growing up where and how he did. But here I am, recognizing these people, witnessing some of these exact moments in my life. I don't know that man or the people whom he wrote directly about, but somehow, I know these characters in this film based on what he wrote. So I find it very hard to believe he just made them up or exaggerated them for the sake of his story. Seems to me he grew up with people very similar to some I grew up with. A movie isn't necessarily bad because it wasn't made or was unrelatable to you. That's what made me so mad about all the negative reviews. And screw the Razzies for that Glenn Close nom! I've been waiting on you to post this particular fiasco (it definitely was an Oscar fiasco) video since you mentioned it in another, but I'm so glad you weren't too harsh on it!

Whenever I hear Amy Irving was nominated for a razzie I scratch my head. That's a good performance.
Glenn robbed of Oscar for “Fatal Attraction”. Cher was good in “Moonstruck” but nothing that deserved that statuette. Close is also amazing in “Dangerous Liaisons”. Chilling characterization in that movie.
Those are her best performances for sure.
I will say this, after watching Susan Lucci lose the daytime Emmy for 18 years before winning, I think the lesson is to not give up hope. Glenn or Amy could easily win an Oscar someday!
I believe that Hillbilly Elegy didn’t do well due to the controversy since the movie depicted of the people who live in Appalachia region in a negative light.
Politics was also a reason why it didn’t do well since the author is from the right and he is now a US Senate from Ohio.

It’s not just that. Vance is completely full of shit and wrote a poverty porn book, and his whole solution to the problem of poverty in Appalachia after being there very briefly was, “take away all support mechanisms,” essentially going with the good ol’ physics-defying pull yourself up by your own bootstraps canard.
As somebody who grew up in the same region of Kentucky that Vance visited and has lived the past 14 1/2 years in Cincinnati and is now stuck with this idiot as a Senator, I cannot express how much disdain I have for Vance.

He called it that because his family roots are in Appalachia. I am one of his distant kin, as well as many here. lol He has lots of kin here, and probably doesn't even know it, he might have thought of it at one time or another, maybe. My great great grandfather is Jim Vance, and no, he wasn't bad, as they portray in movies. He was a Sheriff, a peacekeeper. J.D. is a descendant of our family here in southern WV, and KY. That is why he called it "Hillbilly Elegy".

It was an ok movie. Definitely not the worst movie ever made. Everybody keeps commenting on the wokeness being the reason it didn’t get Oscar love. I didn’t notice any political messages in the movie but understood once Vance announced his Ohio Senate campaign and then realized….Ah, that’s why he wrote the book that became a movie. Now, everyone realizes there were political motivations to the story and sees it much differently now. I know I do.

In my book, he isn't a loser. There are many families in this country who have these same struggles, and many people don't get out of it. They just perpetuate the distinction, because it's hard to break the cycle. It IS a true story, and that he was able to work hard, and change everything for his family makes him a winner! This movie was EXTREMELY authentic. I grew up with people just like Close's & Adams' characters. Seemed it was dismissed because it was the type of story Hollywood was no longer interested in propping up. It's *based* on a true story...it's a dramatization of true events chronicled in Vance's memoir. The film rearranges events in the book, has tonal inconsistencies, and melodramatic acting. One criticism I've heard is the film is washed of any of the political discussion Vance touted. The film is more like "poverty porn." The movie doesn't try to explore the Appalachian subculture in an a relatable or authentic manner, rather it focuses on the traumatic experiences of an individual and dismissively gives him a happy ending.

There is no Ron Howard movie on earth deserving of an Oscar (yes, even Apollo 13). I don’t care if you use eldritch magic to bring Laurence Olivier himself back from the nether realm to star in it. He is the ultimate “American-as-Apple-Pie” filmmaker as long as your idea of apple pie is the factory-made stuff that’s loaded up with corn syrup and sold for $5.99 at Sam’s Club. While I didn’t like Hillbilly Elegy, Glenn Close was excellent. I didn’t realize that she was playing the part until I heard it was her after I saw the movie.
This film just felt small to me. Despite being elevated by two film luminaries, a great director and an Oscar-bait premise, it should have ensured success but it came out inert and cliched.
My least liked performance by Close -and that's saying a lot. I've never found her less than watchable in any of her screen work but here she was unconvincing, borderline campy and predictable.

Excellent retrospective, Brian! I actually enjoyed both of Glenn and Amy's performances in the movie but I did not like anything else about the movie. This film was rightfully better best forgotten. It was a mediocre film. I’d rather Close either win for a performance she deserves or not win one at all. I hate the sympathy Oscar. That cheats someone else who could be in Close’s situation in the future.

As much as I dislike JD Vance, I have to admit Hillbilly Elegy was a surprisingly good film, much better than I had heard. That Glen Close was nominated for a Razzie is ridiculous. She was really good in the film, probably the best thing about the film.

"Hillbilly Elegy" wasn't a great movie. I think you highlighted exactly why it failed as much as it did qualitatively. However, I think Glenn Close's performance was the best thing about the movie, and she certainly did not deserve the Razzie nomination.
I enjoyed the movie and thought all performances, especially Glenn Close and Amy Adams’, were excellent and deserving of nominations and wins. I think you very cleverly alluded to the real reason for the failure of the film at the Academy Awards: politics. The critics killed it because they, and Hollywood powerful, don’t agree with J.D. Vance’s political beliefs. I doubt any of them come from such an impoverished, disfunctional family background so their sneering shows them for the biased frauds they are. Evidence: The disconnnect between critics rotten tomatoes scores and audience scores for many movies during the last year or so demonstrates many critics are just Hollywood shillls. They praise many movies because it pushes the approved agenda and the movie going public either stay away or, if they go, give it a poor score. Going to the movies is a costly outing nowadays and, quite frankly, this movie buff is unwilling to spend money unless I think the movie is going to be value for money. I no longer trust most main stream media critics and look for movies to go and see by watching critical commentary presented by independent commentators like you dear sir. Thank you. I hope your independent commentary is amply rewarded and you prosper in 2024.
P.s. Hollywood seems to forget there are approximately 100 years of wonderful movies available on DVD or streaming so we movie lovers aren’t dependent on the latest offering at the local cinema.
If nothing else, Glenn Close will most definitely get a career Oscar someday. No question. Not sure about Adams. I agree she should've been nominated and won for Arrival. Sometimes winning an Oscar can be a kiss of death to a career. Many actors win and then are rarely heard from again, or they rarely if ever get nominated again afterwards. It can be a "be careful for what you wish for" thing.
Amy Adams gave it her all. One of her best performances despite the movie being subpar.
Actually, Brian, I think this is an excellent assessment of the film and nominations or lack thereof. The book was lovingly embraced by the Northeastern media and intelligentsia because it validated all of their prejudices. The very title of the book is derogatory and that told you that Vance wasn’t even from Appalachia. People from the region didn’t deny the problems there but disliked Vance’s dismissive attitude to be self-aggrandizing. It was a xenophobic and ignorant book embraced by xenophobic and ignorant people. That’s why I was so surprised that Ron Howard of all people wanted to make a movie out of it. The material was unrelatable to everyone, especially in Appalachia. Glenn Close is good in her part and she makes the most of a quirky, likable character very much against her type but nothing could have breathed life into this project. And now, with new political developments, I wonder if Howard and the rest are seeing the folly of their trusting the material of a denounced book.

The movie was very over hyped! I thought it sucked.
I remember going through depression, when I saw this movie during the Pandemic, seeing Hillbilly Elegy was like a sort of therapy to me in those moments. I apologize if i get emotional, but the movie took me back to the times my dad and I spent together before he died of diabetes. Actually, Amy Adams's heartbreaking performance reminded me of my mom when she knew my dad passed away at the hospital

Glenn Close looked ridiculous as that character. It’s not a surprise that she got a Razzie nom. As a casual viewer, Close and Hillbilly Elegy as a whole came off as desperate for awards. Context is important too. There was no way a film like that would’ve won right after January 2021, given the political climate.
As far as Close being “overdue”, I don’t like the idea of actors “deserving” Oscars. It should go to the “best” of the year (or the one who “plays the game” the best). Close, while obviously very talented in many, MANY films, just has never been the best of that year. Sadly, she has rotten Oscar luck.
She was the best three times: Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons and The Wife. They just didn't give it to her
