    This was the era in Madonna’s spiritual journey when she was into Eastern mysticism (Kabbalah, Buddhism, Hinduism and Ashtanga yoga) and she felt that Ashtanga yoga gave her the most uplifting wholistic physical and spiritual experience. This song was a meditative mantra/chant in ancient sacred Vedic Sanskrit. Perhaps she didn’t wear a more traditional Hindu dress because within seconds following this song, she would switch to performing Ray of Light with rock guitarist Lenny Kravitz and an electronic band and dancers evoking a completely different music genre. Years later in 2008 she would do Cyberraga (another Ashtanga yoga-inspired song) with her MDNA album and world concert tour. She wrote/co-wrote both of these songs. Thank you for reacting to this.

    • @briandubois-gilbert8182
      @briandubois-gilbert8182 3 года назад +3

      Additional point of interest re these two Ashtanga yoga- inspired songs: she trained with a Hindu classical linguistics scholar to help her pronounce the Sanskrit lyrics, and in Cyberraga she collaborated with Talvin Singh-a writer, musician and producer of electronic Indian music. Madonna is such an extraordinary musical artist in that she was inspired to perform these songs as an artistic expression of her love for Astanga yoga without regard to its commercial appeal.

    She practically made yoga a mainstream thing in the US when this album came out in 1998. I remember doing yoga prior to that but it was this niche kinda thing, but after this came out, yoga studios popped up everywhere.

    Essentially Madge is reciting Ashtanga yogic prayer said prior to commencing Ashtanga yoga...This was when she was heavily into asthtanga yoga...a rigorous vinyasa based yogic system: requiring super discipline. She fused this with electronica...hence producing a "cyberaga". She mastered this and essentially represented a female sage.

    Its from the magnificent 'Ray of Light' album, she only did a bit from the song as an introduction for 'Ray of Light'. I love the original album version. 'Frozen' is another video with Indian/Arabic vibes (in a modern way) and style. And Madonna's 'Cyber Raga' has Indian vibes too very modern. Her last album 'Madame X' is full of world music influences.

    I’m no expert, but to answer your question, the dancers are definitely trained in one (or more) of the primary classical dance styles of India: Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kathak (North India), Kathakali (Kerala), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Odissi (Odisha), Manipuri (Manipur), Mohiniyattam (Kerala), or Sattriya (Assam) dance styles. However, which style we see in the video, I don’t know. Obviously, there are many more, of course, in the country. The ones I named are just some of the top most well-known and studied schools.
    The words though are associated with Ashtanga yoga, which has its roots in Mysore, Kerala, at the southern tip of India. The prayer is often recited before practicing. Ashtanga was the style of yoga which Madonna was most interested in. It’s known for being one of the most athletic, almost gymnastic-like yoga practices, and is extremely physical and rigorous. But it’s generally open to everyone nonetheless, as everyone’s body and trajectory will be different. The teacher tells you what to do and when according to your development. There are other styles of yoga, Iyengar, yin, vinyasa, hatha… Bikram (heated), even. But in general, the "strongest" Ashtanga yogis are known for achieving intense arm balances, handstands, headstands, Scorpion poses, etc. As opposed to "vinyasa" or modern "flow" yoga, which usually sees people moving in repetitive motions to their own liking, guided by a teacher. Meanwhile, yin yoga is the most gentle, basic stretching, and involves no strain on the body. Complete relaxation. The more vigorous styles bring peace of mind and focus to the practitioner through hard work, focus and perseverance and respecting one’s body and limitations. Really, it’s the rhythmic "ujjayi" breathing that brings everyone the most inner peace. 🙏🏼

    I do love this album of hers. It’s 100% her best. But I don’t understand why she and her team were so confused, back in the day, about the criticism she received from the yoga community. If you listen to the album version and then this one, she clearly pronounced certain words quite "differently" compared to the album track. Almost more… Americanized! I know Madonna loves to simply get a reaction out of the public. But this seemed so obviously incorrect, yet she was confused about the critiques. 🤔 Such as the word _sandarsita_ -it’s usually pronounced, loosely, like "sandarsheetah". But in this performance, we hear her say it like "san-DAR-shee-TARRR". Uhhh. Why the heavy R? Lol! Not even on the original recording does she say those Rr’s so strongly.
