- In terms of popularity, the Nintendo Switch has far surpassed the financial failure that was the Wii U. However, does it deserve that success? Does it truly offer a better experience than the Wii U did? I'm here today to tell you that no, it does not.

In a nutshell, the Wii U is the perfect example of what happens when a console is litteraly sold based on hype and nothing else, if this console was better shown and better advertised by Nintendo I know for sure it would’ve sold more

the wii u is one of, if not, my favourite console, i never owned one, but the fact that it, not only, adds to the library, but it has backwards compatibility with the wii!
i got the wii on my 8th birthday, and i loved it, so it's no wonder why i loved the wii u. i have play on a lot of wii u's though, and they were some of my favourite console expiriences. i definently prefer the wii u over the switch. my favourite nintendo console
I always kind of cringe at these Wii U vs Switch videos (but I still watch them for some reason). Personally, I enjoyed the Wii U much more than the Switch, but that's probably mostly because of what was going on in my life at the time. So I don't really consider my own experience as "proof" that the Wii U was better.
My parents got a Wii U when I was 3. I enjoyed it when I was a kid. I heard that my twin brother played Smash Bros until midnight when he was 6 or 7. I even remember my mother play Pokken Tournament and Yoshi's Wooly World. That's how much I got it.
I really love the Wii U. It was cleverly made with 2 screens that can both be strategically used. Having 2 screens opened up the possibility for so many games that otherwise wouldn't have been able to exist! Another thing I love about it is that it can play Wii games, so even if you don't like the Wii U games, you can still play Wii games using it. It was and still is a great console!
Yet so many of those games just didn’t take the fullest advantage, the biggest game to was literally the pack-in title Nintendo Land. Besides of course, these indie games that are being released onto the eShop during the last remaining months it has left.
Guys in my opinion wii u and switch were my favorite consoles of all time it's not good to compare the Wii u to a switch because that's like comparing a 9 year old with a 29 year old.
@@markjoseph9317 it's fair comparison. Switch shed some features, but it's the current console. It's slightly more powerful and more compact and portable, but it did shed features that people really appreciated, and the fact it made the dual screens into an either/or situation, is pretty lame. Also, the gyros aren't as good, and they release games like Super Mario Galaxy and destroyed major components of the gameplay.
The gamepad also ruined some would-be good games, like Star Fox Zero and Paper Mario: Colour Splash. Even when the games did take proper advantage of the gamepad, which was rare, it was annoying to constantly look down at it
By giving your own score to the games, you're not proving anything. This is just a video where you are telling us your opinion.
I love the Wii U but you have not objectively proved that it's better than the Switch. You've just expressed your opinion.

1:00 You say all of this is objective but you reveal that this entire argument is biased when you say that you simply don’t value the handheld capabilities of the switch. Statements like this 1:41 are all just based on the fact that you don’t seem to enjoy handheld gameplay. That’s totally fine, but you shouldn’t act like this opinion is objective.
Personally, I play handheld most of the time, and it greatly enhances my experience. It is very valuable to me to be able to play everything from NES games to Animal Crossimg to Terraria to Dark Souls anywhere in my house. You’re right that the switch is too big to be pocketable like the DS, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sufficiently portable. It’s still very cool to play all your switch games on the couch, on the bus, on your front porch, on a walk, in your bed, etc. And this isn’t just a shallow gimmick, either. For many people, holding the console in your hands and playing it wherever they please allows them to connect with their games in a deeper, mor intimate way. There is just something more personal and special about handheld, portable gaming than playing from the same spot every day on a giant screen that is 5-10 feet away from you.
I still love my Wii U, but you’re just writing off the value of the switch.
The Wii U will always be my favorite Nintendo console! The Switch isn't bad by any means, but there's something about going back to the Wii U that I will never get tired of.
However, after watching this video, I do feel that you were a little harsh on the Switch in some areas:
1. "The Wii U had better hardware than the Switch." - Okay, now if you're talking about controllers in this case (coughJoyConDriftcough), yeah, controllers for the Wii U are hands down much better in terms of build quality with their analog sticks.
However, when it comes to the Switch's hardware from a game developer's standpoint, it actually is better than the Wii U. Some actual game devs said in the past that it was actually harder to either port or make games on the Wii U because of its hardware while in comparison to the Switch and while some games on Wii U sold well, it was mainly just the Nintendo games that did that (with some exceptions here and there) unlike the Switch where it feels like everything sells well on the system.
2. When you talked about the concept of the Switch being flawed because of its size when you play it as a handheld. Yeah, it's clearly not meant for your pockets (like at all), but the Wii U GamePad isn't much smaller either. I like the Wii U GamePad as a controller and especially how nice and comfortable it feels to hold, but the fact remains that as a controller, it's big.
The Switch (in Handheld Mode) is basically a slimmer Wii U GamePad, if you look at side-by-side comparisons and while you can't put a Switch or even a Switch Lite in your pocket with ease, you can buy cases for either and put them in your backpack or something like a normal tablet, which is something that the original Switch and Switch OLED represent.
damn i always want to buy a nintendo console but each just have around 10 games that interest me. i thought now with the switch there are enough but holy cow every switch game except ultimate and odyssey is also on the wii uplus it can play wii games plus wii u games plus even gamecube games and plus JUST EVERY SINGLE NINTENDO CONSOLE

@@penguinjay It's lighter and thinner and trust me that's an advantage. The Switch also has better battery life, and if you have an issue with ergonomics use the comfort grip. So much better
If you're going to give the games scores atleast use a site like metacritic for all the game ratings or use the mean of multiple sites to score the total. Just scoring the games yourself in rapid succession, and not using the common opinions most of the populous have on these games makes this come across as a very biased take. I have problems with both consoles and I can't say I prefer one over the other, but I will say this feels more like a rant than a comparison.
why trust metacritic when those scores are cast by people with current day bias that think every new shiny thing is the best thing ever. That's exactly why you shouldn't trust metacritic, YOU NEED TO THINK FOR YOURSELF instead of forming your opinion around what is portrayed as the popular consensus. Metacritic is tainted by people who love the shiny new thing, intensely, for a couple of weeks, until they put it down forever. I wouldn't trust those scores at all, most the people casting scores on metacritic didn't even play to the halfway point, they opened the sandbox and said, "oooh, this is cool, must be a 10, all the other people say it's a 10, the part of the game I didn't play must be great! 10!" Metacritic is totally flawed by shillery and current day bias. I trust people who don't care about common opinion way more than I trust people like you that do care about it, your opinions aren't even your own.

Just got a Wii U with the Wii U Pro Controller and Wii RemotePlus (all as new) and playing Breath of the Wild on it. Does drop down to 20fps in a few more areas than on the Switch (according to others tests) but everything else is the same. What a great system. Late to the Wii U but very happy with it. I wish Nintendo stuck with this format and improved it by addressing some of its shortcomings instead of abandoning it :(

As strange as this sounds, I actually prefer the wii u over the switch because it feels more like a nintendo console.
When I boot up the wii u, it's instantly welcoming. The soft menu theme, the mii's all gathering around on the main screen, and the way it presents the games. It just has a more nintendo feel.
The switch has no theme, and it's looks are pretty sterile. There's only two themes, and both are bland. Nothing going on in the background. Even the eshop doesn't have a theme. It just just feels lifeless.
It may be a small thing, but it means the world to me. I love it when other consoles do this, like the ps4 and 5. It just adds so much personality to a console. Without it, there's just a lack of charm that's missing to me
Home menu themes and eShop music would really go a long way into giving the console more personality, it's a shame that the PS5 also stepped away from themes after the PS3 and PS4 nailed them
Who cares? I go on the eshop to buy or download games, not listen to music and after the disrespect from video to the Switch I won’t respect any of you haters over the Wii U did more wrong than it did right in my opinion it’s overpriced these days and I’d rather get the vastly more successful Wii instead.

I love my Wii U, but this video seems really really biased towards the Wii U. While I do think nintendo is doing a crap job with the switch in many ways, I feel like this video didn't look at both sides fairly
lets be honest the switch just isn't worth it the fact that you're spending so much money just to not have access to online play is insanity I'm not talking about the paid online more so the fact that half the games which should have online multiplayer just don't for some reason and even if they are going to add multiplayer support to a specific game they'll most likely use it as another excuse to make a full priced re-release with little to no actual differences (mario party) the switch is by no means a "bad console" some of the games on switch are great despite their state of non-existent online play but the overhaul of multiplayer support in games was and still is a dealbreaker for me and a lot of people
I'd just like to clarify that I don't agree with the poster of this video since he's clearly not a fan of handhelds, the 3DS and BOTH the Wii U imo were miles more enjoyable than the Switch

I appreciate what you are trying to convey with this video, I also think the Wii U has done many things better than the Switch. At the same time you are pushing things a bit in your favor when you give Astral Chain a 3. No matter how much you hate action games, the game is not a 3 out of 10, not even close. Xenoblade X is a great game, I loved it, but I would never give it a 10 because the story and many secondary quests are uninspired to say the least. Especially when compared to the first Xenoblade.
I would definitely own a wii u if like 50% of its good exclusives weren’t on the switch, theres just not enough good exclusives that aren’t ported anymore compared to the gamecube or n64
All those games are drastically cheaper on wii u and the gamepad makes them way more fun to play in my opinion. You are missing out if you don't get one now before the gamepad itself is $500

The only thing I disagree with you on is how Wii Sports Club is is ranked lower than Clubhouse Games 51 Worldwide Classics. Though I do understand why you ranked them how you did concerning the fact that it's just an HD remake of Wii Sports with some janky controls and that you had to pay for it almost every time you played unless you got the full game. But unlike Wii Sports Club, Clubhouse Games lacks personality, namely the personality of a playable avatar. I would at least give Wii Sports Club a 6.5 or a 7 at the most just for the use of a certain playable avatar alone. I would also give Clubhouse Games a 7 as well for the lack of *ANY* playable avatar.
I think you need to learn the difference between subjectivity and objectivity.

I think the Wii U was underappreciated in its time and deserved better, and there are definitely things I liked about the Wii U more, but I would never go so far as to say it's "objectively better than the Switch" due to just how many aspects of that are subjective (quality of the game library being probably the biggest one), this gives off a very "I'm right, you're wrong" kind of attitude, it really reminded me of those unironic console war videos from PlayStation and Xbox fanboys, the whole video really feels like bait not gonna lie lol.

Rip to both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
Owning a switch while paying for online and while having purchased sword and shield + the expansion pack for 4 years would cost $588 in total. Now for the entirety of owning a wii u and a 2DS with pokemon ultra sun and moon on it would only cost around $349 in total, or if you take the Wii U out of the situation, I can buy 6 2DS each with ultra sun and moon on them for $594. Now please tell me why owning a switch for 4 years with Nintendo online and one game is almost the equivalent to owning 6 2ds with a game of the same quality?
I never had one but the Wii U made me so sad. Releasing a console on par with the ps3 and 360 at the end of their life cycle was strange but salvageable. Having little 3rd party support and developers didn’t know how to utilize the main gimmick of the console and the gimmick itself wasn’t enough to want to figure out how to utilize especially with the newer consoles coming out.
I like my switch but i do miss my wii u. Their were things i liked about the wii u that you dont see the switch offer. I loved the wii u pad and loved teh featuers often used for it and how using the gamepad as you said could enhance your game. The major flaw to me was battery life for it but recently found out a way around that. I hope nintendo new console coming out few years combines best aspects of both wii u and the switch but i hope its a console with a gamepad with it like the wii u.

I agree originally the switch was going to have only 2 gb of ram just like the Wii U but they change it to 4gb later on near launch.
The fact that the switch was gonna have 2 gb of ram meant it would have the same performance as the Wii u. Wow Nintendo is very low performing on graphics
I wish somebody would make an external tablet similar to the Wii U's gamepad that would hook up to your PS4/5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Windows PC and allow you to play games from up to 100 feet away. It would probably be cheaper than the PlayStation Portal and could even be used as a second screen for DS/3DS/Wii U emulators on the PC.
Explain to me how smm2 is worse than smm1. It has online multiplayer, has gotten way better scores from every critic, and you can play with the handheld switch if you miss using the gamepad to make levels. And what is wrong with the physics? I have never heard anyone complain about them.
I heard you can mod the Wii u to play switch games. Didn't go into the full rabbit hole for that though.
had the wii u been successful we wouldn't have seen a switch,but a wii u 2 perhaps,maybe this was going to be a wii u 2 but they dropped the name due to its controversial confusion from the original wii name.
in my opinion the switch was meant to be the wii u 2 its very similar in design and shape,although it has less features than the wii u,that is a fact people.
what made the switch more successful is 3rd party titles not 1st party, wii u wins 1st party games by a mile, even breath of the wild is a better fun experience on the wii u because it was originally built for the wii u before the switch in mind, having the wii u pad as an inventory/map screen is way better to i have than on the switch having to exit the game to look at the inventory.
its more a war of accessibility than performance.
take for instance twilight princess on the wii,the GameCube had much better control system than the motion controller which was janky as hell.
to summarise, a newer system doesn't always mean a better one,the wii u and switch portray this in every way.

I do agree but I definitely think you were a bit harsher on the switch scores than Wii u scores. For example, You gave super Mario party a 2! I mean it is not as good as many other Mario partys but miles better than 10, advance or top 100.

I wish Nintendo made a Switch controller that was basically an improved Wii U Gamepad. It would look and act like a Nintendo Switch Lite, but have the following differences:
1. no detachable joycons
2. no way to play it without Nintendo Switch
3. stylus
4. no cartridge slot
5. Gamecube shoulder buttons (analog press work as ZL and ZR, and digital press work as L and R)
6. Gamecube controller ports
Similarities:
1. 720p screen (Wii U gamepad has 480p)
2. between 5.5 and 7 inch screen
3. Switch Pro Controller sized buttons

I love the Wii U. I love the Switch. I love the controllers on both, i love the gimmicks on both and most notably i love the games. These are my favorite consoles of all times.

I still have a Wii u it's not hooked up at the moment but it did have some good games, I wanted to play Xenoblade chronicles never did. dkc tropical freeze is amazing, Mario 3d world was amazing, I'm now wondering how it would have been if the Wii u succeeded more and Mario Odyssey came out on Wii u lol

You forgot the best argument: Wiimote. Though only few games use it. Nintendo Land and the two CoD games use it well.
How is Mario party 10 better than super Mario party? Like browser is overpowered and there’s still cars in Mario party 10. Yes the boards can get boring in super Mario party but the mini games are funner and it plays like the original
The gamepad wasn't maximized. An arm strap paired with a Wii Remote+ could've made for a great Zelda control scheme or a perfect RTS

8:28 First of all, how is fanservice a critique? One is a Breath of the Wild warriors, and one represents the rest of the series. Both don't really fail in their "jobs". AOC has a lacking story, but we are using marketing and fan reaction against a game then we both know TMS would be much lower.

6:13 Minor problem. I do agree this game should have represented it's series better, but I think the edition of better AI commanding, actually allows the game, and developer to make the game strategic in harder missions, which I personally believes should push it up to 7.5
7:04 I get this is based on opinion, but I defineatly think this game should be a 5 minimum. My experience the game is a bit different, but the combat system is alot better than your giving it credit for imo, and generally is really great with encouraging replayability. My personal score would be like a 8-7 but I get you didn't like it, but since this video is at least trying to be objective, this shouldn't be under 5.
13:28 *Deep Breath*. Even if the switch has alot of older, last gen games, does not mean it should should get swept under the rug that it has 3rd party support. This was a HUMONGOUS complaint with the wii u, and the switch, like it or not, the switch simply has a larger library with more options.
The switch is better they both are different from each other but I believe the switch is more popular because I see people with the switch more than the Wii U. In the Wii U era many people did not use a Wii U I only saw people with the 3DS then the Wii U.

Awesome video bro just watching today! Recently been following the Wii U to the point where I actually SOLD my Switch OLED in order to buy a Wii U in 2023! It was the only console I never owned. Same with my recently acquired New 2DS XL, 3DS and 3DS XL. Basically in my opinion they do way more than the Switch currently does aka themes to name a few. More importantly I smile more as a 42 year old man playing these older consoles than the next gen stuff and that's pretty sad to admit.

The only thing i think they did better with the wii u was free online play (but still terrible infrastructure so its kind of a non factor) VC and build quality joy con drift is just terrible and wide spread
Other than that the switch is
1.portable mind you even if its not the most convenient size as an adult witha busy life being able to sit down play or easily go from that to playing while on a workout bike or in bed or traveling or just whenever someone else is using the tv is really convenient for me and many others im sure and that just goes a lot further than the wii u game which in contrast to what you said i believe was very under utilized and a compromise when it was except for a few games like pikmin for example
2. Better design the switch is just more appealing with a snappy ui and simple functionality and use the wii u is clunky awkward and slow

Freedom the fact that the switches gimmick isn’t as much of a gimmick as a convenience feature as opposed to the wii u’s game pad means we dont have to put up with as much tailored and forced utilization in games as weve had to in the past which is just a plus for devs who dont have to compromise their games to accommodate some thing that doesn’t really add value to their game not to say the gamepad was never utilized at all or in good ways just many times i would use it and think “oh they could have just mapped this to a button and made it more intuitive

I have a U currently and don't play much, but kiddo just turned 6 and is a lot more interested in gaming. Also found a switch locally that is NIB and willing to let go for $175 so wondering if I should make the 'switch' now or stick with what we got...

Watch yourself, I thought Game & Wario was a really good game to play with friends, the low number of Multiplayer games didn't bother my group, we had fun with most of the components of the game, one of my favorites to be honest.
You can prefer whatever console you want, but to say the Wii is objectively better than the Switch is laughable at best.

2 screens is better than 1. Switch made it either or, and destroyed 2 screens, that had been a staple since DS. I don't like that they pull the in hand speaker, and pull the 2 screen experience, because it's amazing in games like Resident Evil Revelations, and it's amazing in the Zelda HD games, it's such a shame they pull great features and people don't mind, they call them gimicky as a cope so they can enjoy the new shiny thing and pretend it is better with 1 screen, and without features that have been staple Nintendo for a long time. The gyro is wonky as well,
PS. You should stop giving your money to companies that treat you so poorly, having broken that many joycons, it feels like Nintendo knows people will just replace them and reward their scumbaggery, in fact, all the hardware is like that now for every console. Make better decisions as a consumer. This video is a great step, in that you're a Nintendo fan at least willing to admit there is a problem with the hardware. Lots of people go into denial mode when these companies treat them poorly, at least you aren't at that level. I hope they bring back less successful, friendlier Nintendo, they need humbled bc they treat consumers like garbage now.

I’m gonna buy a wii u instead of the switch because of the wii backwards compatibility , gamecube backwards compatibility with nintendont and because you can mod any game, I know a v1 switch can do that too but u would still need an rcm loader to load directly into rcm + the switch is so uncomfortable every time I go at a friends house that has a switch my hands just hurt using that shit.
I just made the switch useless by using a Milwaukee battery to make the Wii U portable.

the wii U was limited, because we all know that nintendo was dumb and make it sound like a wii accessory.
2. BROKEN GAMEPAD BATTERY
we should all know that you just need a new battery.
3. GAME LIBRARY
yeah you can proudly say that until you realize how games like breath of the wild came from the wii U and also how it would support WII discs, basically tripling its size.

Unfortunately it feels like 16-24 Fps max. Honestly almost unplayable especially if you've played the switch version.

False, the drops in frames do not affect the experience of the game in the Wii U version, the drops are there but not constantly.

I agree with all of this. But something kinda hit me watching this. Why doesn't nintendo use the switch like they did the gamepad when you are playing on your tv?
That would almost definitely require 2 Switch consoles as the bulk of the hardware is in the tablet and not the dock, but it'd be nice as an option, especially for Wii U ports.

damn i always want to buy a nintendo console but each just have around 10 games that interest me. i thought now with the switch there are enough but holy cow every switch game except ultimate and odyssey is also on the wii uplus it can play wii games plus wii u games plus even gamecube games and plus JUST EVERY SINGLE NINTENDO CONSOLE
