- Here is a fight tutorial on how to beat someone who spams leg kicks, in Muay Thai kickboxing and MMA. Knowing how to defend against low kicks is one thing, but you must be two steps ahead with your strategy when you go into sparring or a match. Here are a few ways to keep your legs safe!

Damn dude it's crazy to see how mature you and your channel have grown into, been subbed since your old boy Ant tried to bully you back at the Railroad tracks!
Been following your channel since the beginning. Its changed a lot and gotten so much more comprehensive, the production quality is excellent. Although I do wanna say. Us that have been following you for years still haven't forgotten about Ant
You, ve become my virtual teacher. Thank you so much for your work

I can't beat the low leg kicker if the drug test couldn't
Hello
This video made me realize that I can still improve my game so much. I’ve been getting leg kicked so much and my answer is to take it or check it but i do it to slow so my knees get kicked. I’ve gotten some bruises and I’m definitely gonna try these. I didn’t even realize my jab left me open to leg kicks.
Just practice practice practice bro! I'm also getting hammered by dudes who love kicking way too much. I take little punches to the face and body but when it comes to kicks I just eat 70% of them, block 10% and evade 20% which is not ideal 😂 I don't like getting hit and it's frustrating but you just need to practice what you can do is make a partner throw a kick of their choosing and you'll have to react accordingly and that way you'll learn
Here after mcgregors legs just got destroyed

I train for a 1 year and half and this week was the first time I got leg kicked multiple times with no answer by one of the most experienced fighter of my gym, that first tip open my mind man, thinking abou the spar now I can see what I could've done better, thank you very much! I sending my thanks from Brazil 🇧🇷🙏
This was insightful. Good vid. Back in the day I was only ever trained in the step in counter because my teacher was very into an aggressive style and everything was about smothering the opponent to take options away. He was never into backing away, and would always say that if you backed off to poking moves you were giving up control of the range.
Step in can be vulnerable to feints though. I fondly remember catching my teacher once with some judo off a feint, but it wouldn't have worked in a shirtless match situation since it was shirt/gi stuff.
I noticed he was inviting you to attack with his hand positioning. Good catch on him drawing your jab so he can counter.
Yes this came in great timing! Keep up the good work Shane!

Love the video and the beard! Awesome dude! 👊👊👊💪
you should do a video on lowkick setups. the classic dutch combinations, but also catching your opponent when controlling the ring- stepping in and out to catch them when they move, side stepping, feinting, etc.
I would like to see this as well. Also perhaps one or two ways to bait an opponent to throw a particular strike to counter off of.
MightyMatt28 look at how conor mcgregor gets his bait counters. in an open stance he uses his lead hand to busy his opponents lead hand, feeling their rhythm and not having to watch it for movement. then he lowers his rear hand and raises his chin, that way the opponent WANTS to throw something at the very open target and they can only use one of their hands. it’s rare that you see somebody throw a headkick, most of the times you will see a straight thrown at the head. influencing rather they throw a kick or a punch is more about distance control. be too close for kicks, stuff them up. just be ready to slip and rip! this is mainly used in open stances but i’ve found success in doing the same technique in a closed stance or using my rear hand to busy their lead hand, holding it out like a post, baiting them to hit me with their straight and then i use my lead hook as a check hook over top.
MightyMatt28 in short; isolate their weapons and influence the priority of their shots
Useful information! Thanks, Shane!
Hey man! Absolutely love the video! I am very much a beginner at kickboxing, but this video will help me a long way in defending the kicks! I am not a big fan of taking/defending the kicks with the shin, but the way of stepping away and in is amazing! Thank you so much! :) It’s so simple, but it takes a good person to take the time to record and explain ^^ Wishing you all happy and safe kickboxing 💪
Must have been a blast sparring Bolanos...Awesome footage !!
Ah yes, the ancient kung fu Crane Stance. A wise choice.

whos here after the McGregor Poirier 2 fight
I think the flat foot beat Conor, not the kicks
@@HeHe-zz8qf I think Dustin beat Mcgregor
@@HeHe-zz8qf Conor defenitiely is the more skilled inside boxer.. made good combinations and managed to find that chin.. What made the game changer was the leg kicks, which incapacitate an opponent as Conor, with that wide karate stance with the flat foot of a boxer.
I saw aldo doing some low kicks to the leg
After sparring a good leg kicker
My bro once tried to kick me in the leg and I remembered one mma fight where one fighter used his knee to defend himself. I did it the same and my bro was in real pain.
Thanks. The light front leg stands which most Muay Thai boxers show is explained... Depending on one fighting style one can choose to stay out or crowd in..... I will add one killer block namely by drawing your knee a bit outside in stead of forward during the blocking, this will kill the attacking shin.....
hi shane im your number one fan can u pls do some video about your daily routine training
I think as I learned in Kyoku and also taught by Bas, the 2nd way of stepping the leg forward is actually getting their early and it is a defense actually. I mean it's basically 4th.
This is an excellent topic.
every video is good thx man
ur tutorials are Excellent D:
im lucky followed ur page
I always like the check into a kick counter.. it keeps em busy long enough to give them something else to be concerned about.
Got to love Gaston's leg kicks!
When I was in my 20s I did TKD for almost a decade then switch to CMA as I found TKD limited. We used to train at a park, there was a MT and Kickboxing group that used to train close by. In one occasion the MT coach came to talk to us and brought a student along. His intention was clear he wanted his student to test us out and I was asked to do it. The MT guy started using leg kicks which was the first time for me, I did not know how to respond and those kicks hurt. After the 3th of so kick I lost it, I finally decided to do the same then did a quick stance switch to load my right leg and leg kick him with a low jump. The guy stumble back, I entered with an uppercut to the solar plexus and drop him. We had no protection/gear at the time. I spent a week limping due to those kicks. Good times lol

I like the Nate Marquardt vs Demian Maia approach. Time the leg kick and counter with a lead right hand straight down the middle
Thanks a lot, now i know how to counter that annoying leg kicker in the gym
i dont know why i find this stuff so interesting, i have no intention of learning as i think im probably too old at this point to reach a decent standard but its interesting to see

Your a great teacher
Good video!
Shane vs Vince friendly sparring! Let's see it :) Anyways, good stuff, one thing I'm surprised isn't done more often upon catching the leg, is to deliver a downwards elbow on the thigh and then sweeping the standing leg.
Because I’m short
Everyone I fight is taller so I have to keep kicking to get them away from me
It’s like a tall persons jab
I was waiting on this video
Sorry for the wait! Hope it helps.
Wondering how well your knee would stand up in a fight if you have replaced knee's. Any thoughts
Thanks for this
I think the best way to defend against the low leg kick is bridging the gap, which is the last option in this video. Defense by lifting the front leg not ideal since every time your leg receives kicks eventually will hurt/ bruised/ injured. Retreating to prevent the blow requires light fast footwork, and since the distance between the two fighters is far enough, that kick can be re-cocked again, waiting for the chance to hit again. So i think the best defense is doing more of infighting, always bridging the distance to prevent that rear leg from doing harm to your front leg.
One of my favorite strategies 😂
I'm just wearing shin guards
Can you post a new video on fighting broken rhythm

Digging the new beard
Watching this makes me think of Petr Yan, his lead foot is floating more and popping up just like you're teaching 👍
beard's looking good!
0:17 Keep it "intact". I could not agree more 😉
In ufc nowadays someone always throws a lazy leg kick and the other guy capitalizes
Lazy leg kicks make me cringe. Making it too easy for a decent kicker to hurt you 😫
Shane make more focus pads combos videos
On the one where u step forward catch the kick and punch can u just flying knee forward ?
Use the right leg as lead if your leg kicker opponent use left as leg lead. I learn this from Mcgregor vs Jose Aldo (the leg kicker) and practice this several times
What if they're left handed?? (left stance/using left leg)
Would stronger leg muscles like calves and quads protect a bit more against leg kick then chicken legs or would it go Right thru the muscle
guys he has a beard now thats crazy i never expected this to happen
Hey shane can you do how to use sidekick effectively in agressive opponent... btw i notice your long beard hahahahaha
I started MMA about two years ago and my background is boxing, I actually am trying to become a low kicker, because I think it is less risky, I would gladly apreciate if someone gave me a tip or two about low kicks.
Merci beaucoup !
Hi Shane..Interesting video.... Check out Kudo karate . It seems to be a very challenging and promising style .... It relies heavily on Kyokushin karate and Judo ...
Can you tell us your thoughts on this style .
Do you need to shin conditioning first in order to effectively check kicks
thank you
Shane, how much do you currently weigh? I know you said 140lbs a couple years ago when you fought Juji, but you look a lot buffer now than when you released that video.
No crouch block?
Good video! What about push kicks to the knee? Moving forward and backward wouldn't do too much since thats in the line of the strike. I guess you could try and move the leg in or out (left or right) out of the way, or take the weight off the leg so that it moves more freely (less force actually applied during the kick) not really sure how these would work out in motion though.
There isn't much defence against this. All you can do is keep the weight on that leg light. Severe acl injury has been seen in mma when a fighter steps forward with the lead leg into a more bladed, front-foot heavy western boxing stance and receives a counter teep or oblique kick to the knee. Avoid stepping forward. Keep your weight off your front foot.
Thankfully, shots like this are illegal in most MT rulesets. No real rules in a street fight though.
When you block a kick, Should you keep your leg light? I mean if you block it with some power it could break? And doesnt it hurt eaven to block as kicking? Its still bone against bone
Hurts both but the kicker will take more damage

What kind of floor mats do you use?
I’m sry I’m new to Muay Thai what is the difference between Muay Thai and Kickboxing
I couldn't tell if Gaston hit him hard or light
Pretty light compared to how hard he is capable of hitting
Big gloves I think, personally you can wear 16 oz and it springs your head back more, but yeah I’m in your boat 😂
Hes actually going pretty light, but u know when pro fighters go a bit fast, theres gonna be some impact
I personally use these game plans to stop low kicks (in this order)
1. Check
2. Grab the leg for a takedown
3. Grab the leg for a punch counter
4. Move
5. Switch stance to match theirs example, orthodox to orthodox
That overhand is also there
@@ahmedkhalid7241 true true. I usually set up my overhands in takedown fakes but my sparring partner loves the overhand as a counter. If you're not allowed to elbow (amateur, Japan etc) then the overhand is the next best thing.
Practice is the most important thing
As always, great insight.
I sustained a knee dislocation from a leg kick, eversince then I been tryna figure out how become as defensively sound as possible
Hi Shane .....can you plz share your view on CrossFit.....I mean to say I personally follow you and your advice.....bt just want to know....is is good to do CrossFit or should I do something else.....
Shane, I've watched this video because yesterday evening I got heavily low kicked, he shutted down my right leg, and I'm a right handed southpaw. But I'm happy because I hit him to the head with a spinning hook kick, that was almost orgasmic. I struggle with walking btw, but I don't care
Shane great job! Just superb content. Keep it up, and bring Ant back! Haha
