  • We finally end the Railway Roundabout in 1958, at the Southern Railway's Southampton docks, where we see the USA tanks and featuring rare footage of LBSC's E2 class no.32109 (best known as Leo in mine and Tomthetrainfan's NRWS)

    I bet most people came here just to see the basis of Thomas the Tank Engine in action.
    It's a real shame that there's rarely any footage of the E2 class or any survivors for that matter.

      And if only Rebecca was written as a believable character. BWBA has alot of lost potential, as stated by the Unlucky Tug. Rebecca had an interesting basis, which as seen in this vid, has a bit of wheelslip problems. Anyone wanna take off after me, cause I'm lazy to explain it all lol.

      I think that the ship behind them, judging by her livery and the forward well deck essentially becoming a promenade deck, is either the RMS _Edinburgh Castle_ or the RMS _Pretoria Castle._

    • @zemildlybird2024
      @zemildlybird2024 3 года назад +11

      @YOrbiTer 12 Actually, that would be nearly impossible. Thomas was built and sold in 1915 to Sodor, Rosie and her siblings were went to Southampton during the 1940's, to help with the war effort, so here's my theory.
      Thomas would probably know Rosie during the Second World War, where she was sent to Sodor. She proved far greater then the E2, which made Thomas jealous and worried for his siblings.
      But during the 60's, when Diesels started to replace Steam, he had sympathy for Rosie, and then the two would be made friends.
      So there.

I particularly liked seeing the American side tanks roaming the docksides, as they had quite the distinction between other locos at the docks, like the LBSC engines, inside cylinders and British as can be.

  • @thetransportationguy7930
    @thetransportationguy7930 2 года назад +39

    Unlike Thomas, LB&SCR E2 class locomotives weren’t useful. The E2s were limited to only some parts of the docks because they were too long for some of the tight corners and were prone to derailing. They were originally built for light passenger trains but were unreliable for long distance.

      You may be onto something there, actually. It's very similar to the puffing sound when Thomas is stuck in the snow. There isn't much info on the audio production for the original series, but I do know that some of the sounds used were recorded at the Talyllyn Railway. Apart from that, I suppose old railway footage like this could have also been used for audio samples or simply as a reference.

    +Colin Langford. You were right about it being Millbrook. Millbrook is the site of the container terminal now and they're talking about expanding it westwards. There's a lot of local opposition to this. All the railway infrastructure on the eastern side of the docks is now defunct save for one line that comes down from St. Denys past what was the old Southampton Terminus station. It crosses Canute Road as it winds down to the vehicle import/export facility.
